hey guys today I have a special video for you this is a throwback video today
you're gonna see one of the first times we ever met Jim and May when they agreed
to take us out to street food spoiler alert
the food was delicious of course this was filmed right before I started my
intensive Spanish classes and watching the footage back was so hilarious to me
watch and see if you can tell just how terrified I was and overwhelmed and
understanding nothing um and trying so hard so it's it's been so interesting to
me to watch this back and realize how much progress I've made since then also
this was before Jesse got a haircut so he has so much hair and a big giant beard
so that is quite something and at the end of the video I'm going to link to a
another collab video that we did where Jim and May introduced me to a
ton of Mexican candies that May picked out so it's it was hilarious and I'm
curious to see the video too because I don't know how Jim is gonna edit it but
I do remember saying a lot of embarrassing things okay so let's get
going and don't forget to subscribe to this channel and go subscribe to Jim and
May's channel too okay roll tape! - hey guys we are on our way
to meet our new friends Jim and May and to get some street food you guys this is
something that I have wanted to do ever since we
got to Mexico
I wanted to have someone who speaks Spanish go with me and get street food
and teach me how to do this the right way because usually when we're in a
restaurant there's a printed menu I do okay I've got enough of a reading
vocabulary of food words that I can figure things out but for street stalls
there's you know often not a menu and I don't really know how to ask like what
do you have what do I what's good what should I eat here
so today Jim and May agreed to help me and I am so excited also we were walking
down here and we went through a little alley that has an art show today and
there is all this beautiful art it's so cool
happy Saturday let's go
so you may know Jim and May from their YouTube channel Spanish and Go I have
been a subscriber for a while now when we were first in San Miguel
like we could not even properly order food at a restaurant without just
pointing to the menu so I would actually watch their videos about how to order
food in Mexico and take screenshots of the things that they said and take it
with me to the restaurant and then Jesse and I would sit there at the table
and practice out the lines so that we would know what to say when the waiter
came to take our order so actually it was really helpful and another thing
that I really liked about watching their videos is that it helped me to know what
the questions might be that I might get asked once I know what somebody is
likely to ask me then I can kind of figure it out if it's a question that
I've never heard before I'm just like so watching their videos was really helpful
with that too so Jesse and Harper are chasing some pigeons while we sit here
in this beautiful Plaza it's Plaza San Fernando. Jim and May are here
they're going to take us to tasty stuff! oh look we can get everybody in how cool is that
so I've been I've been telling them all about how I would like screen shot your
videos and take them to restaurants. and now I have them! I don't even have to take a screen shot, I just take you with me. This is awesome.
All right, hungry? Listo? Yes. Si, listo. Vamos!
all right, so we are here at the deliciousness
I think first we should tell you some phrases okay okay the most
important thing is like when you go to a place like a little booth then sometimes
they have things that you don't know right like you were saying
so you can ask que y que tiene it's like what and what do you have
(repeating que y que tiene) And then she's just gonna tell you like
quesadillas, or tlacoyos, or gorditas, like whatever. Now, tlacoyo...
I've never had that and that's another thing I don't know how to say it so I
don't ever order anything so it's like um
do you know what a sope is? yes so a tlacoyo is almost the same but it's like
like shaped like this and it's like folded and sometimes they
put beans inside aha so it's like a tortilla that they fold with beans
inside so it's like oval shaped and then they put it on the grill thing that
they have and then you can have it with I don't know they have like meat and
stuff like you can order it with ok sometimes they put cheese on it but it
depends on the the person who's selling how do I say that's another one of my
problems so if I ask you know what meats do you have and then you know I might
catch the first one and the last one and then all the ones in the middle just go... I can't keep up!
You can say, lento por favor
we're going to try here and see how it goes, maybe you can ask first, que y que tiene
and then lento por favor
all right, let's try this
those are the tlacoyos, oh those look so good, those look so good
May speaking Spanish
that was so fast, oh my gosh
that's another thing that is very intimidating these kind of these kind of
like food places because I don't know what they're going to ask me
que y que tiene?
Gorditas, tlacoyos, quesadillas
all right, I order now? Okay
it just wasn't for us it just didn't work everybody around us
seemed to be digging it and it's not a lifestyle
so that was difficult
this is like life right now hold on let me take a bite of this yeah
tell the camera what you're tasting deliciousness okay this is tlacoya...tlacoyo! If I
had a magic wand to get the genders right that would be like oh my gosh
yeah but you can just do take two and cut the first one yeah I know okay and this one is potato
and this is the thing about Mexican food is like the potatoes are so stinking
good like how can something with just plain potatoes be
oh good there's some kind of magic stuff that they put on the potato
this one has rajas and some meat, some shredded meat
I have um yeah many segments of the vlog of me eating stuff and it going everywhere, these are really good I think that this is gonna
be our new go to. I knew when she ordered it this was gonna be a good thing
okay let me try the gordita
okay this one is more potato also it has beans and cheese
it's a different type of cheese that's more like queso fresco
and this one is like, the one for the tlacoyos is more like a melty cheese, yeah mmm! it's so good. I'm just going to get potato
everything potato all the things with the potatoes and this is chicharron
chicharron prencado
which means I have no idea it kind of looks like mole and tastes
a little bit like that
I saw a commercial on TV for boxed mole and it was like all the families around
are so happy you made box mole! so okay so if you if you are not following them
on Instagram you need to like right now because I've learned so much from your Instagram
and then yesterday or the day before? anyway recently they showed how
you're supposed to roll up the tortilla but good thing is that I didn't even know I was
supposed to roll up the tortilla like when you get a meal so when you have
something that is more like a stir fry like a guisado, explain that because I've seen it on menus and I don't know what it is
it's a weird term because it can be like anything prepared like like potatoes you had, that's a guisado, the chicharron prensado, that's a guisado, the rajas, that's a guisado
you've also explained it to me as like stir-fried yeah okay so anything that you can prepare... it's a big term for
lots of different... yes. if you get a guisado, you would usually eat it with
the tortillas okay so instead of using a spoon I don't know if you've noticed
in Mexico we use just like the tortilla as some people use bread, we use tortilla
when you're eating like a soup or something that is more liquidy that you
can't just grab with the tortilla so you're gonna want to roll it into like a
little taco and then eat it just like
see? so useful!
another thing that I was gonna say is like in these situations like it is so
it's so stressful to not understand what is going on and I feel like every time
every time I do it it gets a little bit easier the next time yeah and then I can
be like okay now I know what a tlacoyo is, now I can order that all the time
it's just it's so like I feel like that's the thing for me being here and not knowing the language and not being able to just ask
right like another thing in the states there's like a million things I
don't know but I can just ask like how am I supposed to eat this? or I've never had this before I've never
what am I supposed to do with this? or is this the right door to
go into or but not being able to ask right so the double like it's a double
whammy of not knowing anything and not being able to ask like what do I do here
a very useful phrase would be like, que es? like when the lady was
walking with a little baby I asked like okay que es? es un Santo? is it a saint? so then she explained to me
what it was so if you walk by and then you see someone spelling like the people
here selling the guacamayas we don't know what it was but it's a torta and
they put a piece of chicharron and egg inside and like some pico de gallo but
we asked, que es? what is that? what's in it? que tiene?
and then lento, mas lento por favor!
like in situations like today where there's a bunch of people
it's so scary, it's stressful
you can do it! with practice
practice practice practice
Another good one is like, me lo puedes repetir
me lo puedes repetir, can you repeat that for me?
Okay we're here to get ice cream.
May tells me that Jim does not like sweets
it's how he keeps his girlish figure
because if he did, we would be eating sweets all the time
so he's like, we don't need it
I'm like, yeah you're right
but fortunately now you're here with me, yeah, and I do not have that problem
okay so there's like a million flavors here look at this I'm just gonna get one of
everything
this is so good! oh we didn't even ask what's in it
raisins, nuts, maybe rum?
it's so good
I got mamey, have you had mamey fruit? mmhmm, it's so good, it's my favorite
it's so pretty, yeah yeah, so pretty
Jesse has a new best friend and Harper is like why are you not paying attention to me
