Greece's Geography Problem - Duration: 11:56.

This video was made possible by Assassin's Creed: Odyssey.

Learn more at the link in the description.

Centuries ago nations like Portugal, and Iraq, and Syria, Spain, Mongolia, Turkey, Italy,

Egypt, and Greece were the world's most powerful, most advanced civilizations.

Today, though, that's not the case.

While this group does not necessarily represent the losers in the game that is history, they're

also certainly not in first place.

Change has relegated them into second tier status despite their earlier prowess.

One particularly noticeable case is that of Greece.

In a span of a couple thousand years the people living on this peninsula went from shaping

the way the western world would work to being boxed in by the very world around them.

Greece is one of the most celebrated nations in history.

They developed the political system of democracy—the very one used by many of the world's most

powerful nations today.

Because of this perhaps a disproportionate amount of attention is placed upon the history

of this small nation but nonetheless, ancient Greece overcame the odds to create a number

of small yet powerful city-states.

However, many of the factors that led to the success of this ancient civilization are the

same ones holding back the modern state.

On a global scale the country is far from poor but, as a European nation, it's one

of the poorest in a very rich area.

Greece is exceptionally mountainous yet the terrain of Greece is different than that of

many other countries.

Switzerland, for example, has enormous mountains with nice, wide and long valleys in between.

The mountains of Greece, though, are not as tall.

The average elevation of Greece is 1,600 feet compared to 4,400 in Switzerland but the mountains

in Greece are much more irregular.

What this means is that there is only so much flat land in any one place.

Any settlement needed enough land around it to grow the food that would feed its people

and most agriculture can only grow on relatively flat land.

While today we can ship food across the world, in the time of ancient Greece transportation

technology was not advanced enough so one essentially had to have enough fields to feed

the population directly around each settlement.

Therefore, the sizes of ancient Greek settlements were essentially determined by the amount

of flat land they could find in one place.

It was tough for any one political entity to hold power over vast amounts of land because

it was just too difficult to get around.

For that reason, the peninsula was not one unified nation as it is today, it was divided

into hundreds of small city-states unified by a common language and religion.

The most powerful city-states, you'll notice, were the ones that had the most flat land.

The area directly surrounding Sparta, one of the historically strongest city-states,

is a relatively large, flat valley that would have given them more land than other city-states

to grow food and therefore Sparta was one of the largest cities.

Athens was also one of the strongest city-states and still today is by far the largest city

in Greece thanks to being in one of the largest single flat areas in the country.

This geography did, of course, fragment the peninsula into hundreds of political entities

but at the time that wasn't really an issue.

The same geography protected the entire area from outside invasion.

Mountains acted as a thick shield from western Europe but this also, of course, made it tough

to get to these areas, at least by land.

This geography forced Greece to the ocean and the city-states became some of the most

advanced maritime powers.

Because of this, Greece was exposed to civilizations all around the Mediterranean and beyond and

was able to learn from other nations such as Egypt and Mesopotamia.

This exposure to the outside world helped turn the city-states into highly advanced

and cosmopolitan civilizations that produced the era's greatest philosophers.

Nowadays, however, the mountains are less helpful.

As the world has become more globalized trade linkages to other countries have become even

more important and the mountains that pepper the Greek peninsula continue through the Balkans

which means that land transportation infrastructure is limited to get goods and people between

Western Europe and Greece.

More consequently, though, 78% of the land in Greece is considered mountainous making

it tied with Slovenia as the most mountainous country in the European Union.

Greece is also one of the poorer countries in the European Union.

As it turns out, there's a link between how mountainous an EU country is and its GDP

per capita.

The average EU country with 35% of its land mountainous has a GDP per capita of $30,000

while the average EU country with only 25% of its land mountainous has a GDP per capita

of $54,000 proving that there is a correlation between flatness and wealth.

Now, there are some major exceptions—Sweden is one of the wealthiest EU countries while

also being one of the most mountainous while Latvia is one of the poorest while being completely

flat—so the correlation is not that strong and the EU also conveniently leaves out Switzerland

and Norway—two exceptionally wealthy European countries that are also exceptionally mountainous—but

nonetheless, it intuitively makes sense that mountains inhibit development and the statistics

back this up to an extent.

It's worth pointing out that this is not just a European phenomenon.

The five most mountainous countries in the world are Bhutan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan,

Lesotho, and Montenegro all of which have GDP per capita's below the world average.

What you'll notice in Europe is that the wealthy mountainous countries such as Norway,

Sweden, Switzerland, and Finland are all in cold climates while the less wealthy mountainous

countries such as Bulgaria, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Greece are all in warmer climates.

As it turns out, climate too is a predictor of wealth.

For every additional tenth of a degree Fahrenheit of average yearly temperature in the EU a

country's GDP per capita is, on average, $1,670 lower.

The reasoning behind the link between climate and wealth is massively complex, controversial,

and not yet fully understood so we'll leave that out but Greece is therefore in this double

whammy situation of being both hot and mountainous which has proven itself as an inhibitor to

development.

Of the world's 30 wealthiest countries none could be considered both hot and predominantly

mountainous—many are one or the other but none both.

The two factors together just seem to be the perfect cocktail for poor economic health.

Greece suffers from strong regionalization.

The same geography that cut the peninsula into small city-states today makes it difficult

for a central government to govern the entire area effectively.

You see this often, countries that were formerly multiple countries or nations often have problems

with governance, but part of the difficulty for the Greek government is that their infrastructure

is just not good.

It's hard to get around the country.

Of course Greece is made up of about 6,000 islands and you cannot, of course, build roads

across the Aegean Sea but the country still lacks infrastructure on the mainland.

This can likely be attributed to a mix of a lack of funds and high cost to build through

mountains and the country is therefore considered to have the third worst infrastructure in

the European Union.

With a lack of proper infrastructure to overcome the geographical boundaries this makes simple

government functions like tax collection difficult.

Greece receives about 28% less value added tax than it levies due to how rampant tax

evasion is.

The same is true for income and other forms of taxation so it's no wonder why the country

ended up in a debt crisis.

In fact, this debt crisis that has devastated the country over the past ten years can too

be partially linked back to geography.

You see, Greece's main geographic asset is the Aegean Sea.

Part of this is economic.

Many of Greece's most popular tourist destinations from Santorini, to Mykonos, to Crete are islands

in the Aegean Sea but the more significant asset of the Aegean is strategic.

To the Northeast of Greece is the Black Sea which drains out into the Mediterranean through

the Turkish Straits and the Aegean.

While Turkey holds the most direct level of control over maritime traffic by controlling

the Turkish Straits, the density of Greek islands and the strength of the country's

Navy means that it too, if it wanted to, could relatively easily blockade the Black Sea.

This means that Greece holds the keys for Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, and Georgia's

only ocean access.

Perhaps more significantly, Greece also controls the maritime routes to and from Russia's

most important ports.

Being a very northern country, the majority of Russia's coastline sees ice in the winter

which makes shipping difficult whereas the Black Sea ports do not making them both militarily

and economically critical for Russia.

17% of Russia's shipping containers leave from the Port of Novorossiysk, for example,

which is only one of the many Black Sea ports.

A good portion of Greece's little geopolitical clout is as a result of holding the Aegean.

Given its importance, Greece therefore puts a lot of effort into asserting its sovereignty

over this sea.

This sovereignty, however, has for decades been the subject of a dispute with Turkey.

The dispute is over not only who owns a number of islands near Turkey but also over the extent

of Greek sovereignty over Aegean waters and airspace.

Despite both countries officially being NATO allies tensions do occasionally heat up and

Greece therefore regularly patrols the Aegean by sea and air.

The country has a world class Navy and Air Force that are considered to be some of the

strongest especially for such a small country but this, of course, comes at a cost.

The country spends a full 2.5% of its GDP on its military.

That's a higher percentage than any NATO member except the US.

The high government spending, which high military spending contributed significantly to, along

with the country's seeming inability to collect the taxes it levies forced the government

to take on debt which, after the Great Recession hit in 2008, it could not pay off.

The country was then plunged into years of economic and social crisis.

This affected what is arguably Greece's most important industry—tourism.

A full quarter of jobs in Greece are in or as a result of tourism and the industry represents

20% of the country's GDP so if tourism disappears, the whole country is affected.

During the debt crisis, as violent demonstrations on the streets of Athens were publicized worldwide

the number of tourist arrivals immediately declined which further exasperated the crisis.

For a number of years the country actually had negative GDP growth and an unemployment

rate close to 30% but, after austerity measures and a series of bailouts, unemployment rates

are now shrinking and the country's GDP is once again growing, at least slowly.

The truth about Greece is that its geography, with warm weather, disconnected landmasses,

sheer ocean cliffs, and soaring mountains, is terrible for most types of economic development

but it's these geographical features, along with a fascinating history and warm hospitality,

that make Greece such an attractive travel destination.

Tourist numbers in the country are reaching historic levels to the point where there's

starting to be a problem of too much tourism.

While the country continues its path towards economic recovery the real test will be whether

it can take what it has going for it, most specifically tourism, and use that to fix

what's not.

What's really fascinating about Greece is not that they fell from a position of strength,

it's that they ever had that position of strength.

History has proven that the land of this peninsula, despite all its natural beauty, is not quite

as hospitable and idyllic as it may seem.

In this video I'm sure you noticed the stunning historical footage of Greece.

This all came from Assassin's Creed: Odyssey—a brand new game that has essentially recreated

the entirety of ancient Greece during the Peloponnesian War.

Ubisoft actually brought me out to Greece to try the game and visit the historical sites

they recreated so most of the modern footage of Greece in this video is my own and, even

as someone who doesn't really play video games, I really enjoyed playing Assassin's

Creed: Odyssey for the ability to explore a pretty breath-taking historical world.

Of course the gameplay and storylines are great too but, if you're just in it for

the exploration, they'll be releasing a "discovery tour" mode soon which will

essentially be an interactive museum in the game.

If you want to learn more and maybe even buy Assassin's Creed: Odyssey be sure to click

the link at the top of the description.

Thanks for watching and we'll see you again in two weeks for another Wendover Productions

video.

See what's new in KONTAKT 6 | Native Instruments - Duration: 3:32.

Hello I'm Dinos, I'm the product owner for KONTAKT, and today we'll be talking about

the new additions to KONTAKT 6 that are targeted to builders.

First of all we'll talk about the new wavetable oscillator, next we will talk about the new

effect additions, and finally we will look at Creator Tools, a new standalone application

tailored toward the instrument creation process.

KONTAKT 6 delivers a new sound source module in the form of the wavetable oscillator.

It is also incorporated in the new Play Series instruments that ship with KONTAKT 6 like

ANALOG DREAMS.

It can also be freely used by third-party instrument creators for their own instruments.

Every group can be turned from traditional sampler mode, to a wavetable, which in return

means that every sample within it will be interpreted as a wavetable, chopped up to

the different wave cycles contained within it.

With KONTAKT 6, we're also shipping over 40 wavetables that can be freely used in any

commercial instrument.

They're categorised under more traditional tags like additive or analog, but we're also

including more exotic ones like some harsh digital sounding ones or formants.

KONTAKT 6 also includes a new UI widget for KSP that enables builders to visualise wavetables

in the UIs of their instruments.

We also used these new features in the Play Series instruments, as you can see on my screen

with ETHEREAL EARTH and we're super excited to see how the rest of the builder community

will make use of it as well.

In KONTAKT 6 we overhauled the most commonly used effects in instrument building.

This update delivers 3 new algorithmic reverbs to complement the existing Convolution Reverb.

We've also incorporated Native's REPLIKA DELAY as a KONTAKT effect.

A powerful delay that contains additional effects such as distortion, chorus and filters

within the feedback loop.

The final addition is Cry-Wah, based on the classic Wah pedal.

Now let's hear some of those new effects in action.

[Audio examples]

An entirely new addition to the KONTAKT ecosystem is Creator Tools, a standalone application

that integrates tightly with KONTAKT 6 to support the instrument creation process.

The first element of Creator Tools is a Debugger, which is designed to help developers find

and fix problems in their code.

The second element is the Instrument Editor, which automates highly repetitive tasks, allowing

instrument builders to spend more time on the creative aspects of their work.

An example of a repetitive task is mapping samples to keys within KONTAKT.

The instrument editor examines the samples and takes information on the pitch and amplitude

to map them to the right key and velocity layer, based only on audio information collected

from the samples by the Instrument Editor.

We're excited to share this first version of Creator Tools with the KONTAKT building

community, and we're currently working on further features to be released in the coming

months.

Thanks for watching and we look forward to seeing how you use these new KONTAKT 6 features

in your instrument creations.

WTF WHAT WAS THAT ENDING! - Arrow Season 7 Episode 1 Breakdown - Duration: 10:39.

what is good YouTube Warstu here with a video on arrow season 7 and yes

you didn't hear me wrong arrow season 7 I am back reviewing arrow what an epic

first episode very good arguably the best episode of arrow premiere wise for

a very long time since the Deathstroke season in my opinion so episode one is

called inmate for 587 and we keep hearing that throughout the whole

episode which is pretty awesome so what the in hell happened at the end that end

scene was so awesome I didn't see it coming but I have got a

pretty awesome theory of what is actually going on but I won't talk about

this in fact this video I'll talk about it in another video so there was a time

jump we find out throughout the first episode that Stephen Amell not really

seen him Oh Oliver Queen has been in jail for five months William and

Felicity aka Aaron is a new name she's obviously in a

house arrest she's obviously got a new identity we find out that Diaz is

looking for her and William and what a coincidence when the episode starts

maybe like 20 minutes in he finds her five months later not during the actual

break of the five months but ironically in the first episode so we get a

monologue kind of that little little v role of Oliver Queen in jail training

and it's pretty cool it is pretty cool it's a different concept now it's a very

different season in my opinion because he's in jail with many people he put in

jail like Vinnie Jones who plays Brit there's there's wrestler dude

Samson he's in there who was in w/e a bunch of people who he put in jail so

it's a bit obvious that they're all gonna be gunning for him and that's

exactly what they do there is a awesome fight scene in a

shower when he's pretty much naked and we all seen it coming cuz Stephen Amell

tweet about it and it was such a cool fight scene but the only thing that

ruins it is he does this sick fighting text and went out then saw him blindside

him who one punch and he gets knocked out and he's like your family's dead and

then what happens after is Felicity goes to see him so obviously all of his

family isn't dead and the fact that Diaz tried to put hit

on Felicity had absolutely irritated him to the point where he goes from kind of

sticking to himself just wanting to do his time but do you really think they're

gonna let him out so I think that he's actually gonna be in jail for a lot

longer than what everyone actually thinks so we get to see everyone in a

new role Curtis is working with John Diggle in

Argus I can't really remember oh I don't really care what his job is but it's

doing something on computers probably research and development which is quite

normal in that kind of work that kind you have I guess you could say

Felicity's new job is she is working in a coffee shop she's secretly a computer

hacker as we already know diner aka Black Canary is now captain of the

police force which I think's pretty cool it gives her a very good role now so

black siren is playing a different role this year she's actually the DA and only

gets one line in the whole episode we're not lying one scene when she just says

they're against vision Antonis and if there's any vigilantes then they're

gonna be taken down then all of a sudden there is a new vigilante pretending to

be the Green Arrow but it's not Oliver Queen because he's in jail get in it if

you get what I mean he's getting it in jail and it's pretty cool so who is the

imposter Green Arrow there's been a lot of conspiracy theories chucked around

oh it's John Diggle it's Roy Harper it can't be Roy Harper but can it so

throughout the whole summer there was a mystery where's Roy Harper why's Annina

in the trailers why did he turn out in Expo with a real

well with basically not being shaved he wasn't allowed to shave and we find out

why who and what Roy Harper is at the end of the episode but I'm gonna come

back to that but I don't think Roy Harper is the green arrow I personally

think it could be someone completely random or someone from Oliver's past as

we know in this season we're not gonna get flashbacks but we are gonna get

flash-forward so to speak so this episode actually didn't answer a lot of

questions it gave you more questions than it answered it's like well how did

it happen what did it happen so for instance so for instance Diaz was just

about to kill felicity because at the start of the episode Oliver keeps having

a dream félicité gets shot but he's just having

a nightmare but in the answer episode there's a similar situation where Diaz

is just about to kill felicity then Argos comes in I'm presuming John

diggle's there but how did he ask tracker down in the first place is

Felicity's new friend at coffee shop who we see temporarily is he working for

Diaz is that how Diaz tracked Felicity down but more importantly how did years

get away from Argos how so you get one mean answer questions does wild dog know

who the green arrow is the new Green Arrow because he wants to help him

there's a lot of unanswered questions which is pretty good cuz usually the

first episode doesn't tell you a lot but this one did tell you a lot but it left

you pining for more so obviously Felicity wants to stay with Oliver wants

to stay in Star City so all of sorry so William gets sent to Cambridge

University obviously because Diaz is still out there and they don't want

anything to happen so after Oliver finds out that Diaz went after felicity

he basically lets it rip he doesn't hold back he literally kicks the shit in to

brick and then he finds the biggest guy the guy or ironically beat him up early

on in the prison smashes him like he's absolutely nothing but what's

interesting about this prisoners in slam side prison is the prison guards let

them have a fight and then they take them down then they're like yeah you're

going in slammer you're going in the hole so to speak so it's very

interesting how they let them have fights then the repercussions happened

after obviously no one wants to be in prison and it looks like quite a tough

prison to be in because you've got to consider that literally everyone inside

that prison or majority of them are in there because of the Green Arrow so

let's talk about the ending scene what happened because that first have some

flashbacks to the island and you actually think their flashbacks and then

you realize it's a flash-forward not a flashback so Felicity gives William a

little sentiment gift before she sends him away and we find out when this

person that goes to Lian Yu goes to Robert Queen's memorial grave that we I

thought it was someone completely and then obviously Roy Harper is

revealed to be on the island but you got remember this is 20 to 30 years later

so William will be early 30s and Roy Harper would be in his 50s or caught

into the showrunner so there is some crazy fast-forward or flash forward

which is pretty cool it's like how why is Roy Harper there is green arrow dead

in this timeline why is William his son going there 20 30 years later it's

really odd and I've got a theory that's not gonna make any sense unless Barry

Allen messes up the timeline but it's interesting it ends with Roy Harper be

in there and he knows who he M is he knows that's the future version of

William now people were gonna jump to the fact that oh he's going to be

trained he's going to be the next Green Arrow but realistically are they going

to sell it up because you've got to understand arrow season 7 is most likely

going to be one of the last seasons so to set this up and for it not to have

any payout would be quite bad but when I seen Roy Harper write the end it was

like tam now it makes sense why they haven't been showing Roy Harper in any

of the trailers and some people would jump to conclusion yeah Roy Harper is

definitely the impostor Green Arrow because he's Roy Harper in the future no

that does not make any chronological sense to anyone that thinks logically in

my opinion but it could be so who could be the green arrow

John Diggle no because that's too obvious Roy half and no it's too obvious

as we know the next episode the longbow hunters are coming we know they're going

to be a pinnacle part this season we know Diaz has been upgraded to a season

regular so this season's gonna have so much craziness obviously there's a lot

of castings happening but obviously we don't know what's going to happen in

these flash-forwards there could be multiple new characters I'm so looking

forward to this season after it started really strong so many unanswered

questions is tomorrow gonna come back is dying they're gonna go against the DEA

and come back as back siren are they gonna extradite the Green Arrow how

long's green are gonna stay in prison for what actually is bricks side hustle

because obviously the person has now gone in a slammer because of Oliver

Queen they need three people for this side hustle but what is the side hustle

what scheme as he got going in this jail in

this prison and slam slide prison very compelling story talent and obviously

it's got a new show running out Beth I'm I'm gonna say last like pretend to say

last name but Beth is the new showrunner and Tobias you couldn't even tell that

this is a different show and a very well executed TV show and it was nice to see

that Oliver did actually get redemption for the character that he let get

bullied so obviously this characters trying to

get all of his help in jail and he couldn't help him because he's trying to

keep himself to himself but then he just beats the hell into everyone so I don't

think anyone I think he might be called Stanley I'm recording it in one take

after watching it so I think it's called Stanley or something like that I don't

think anyone's gonna pick on him again cuz all of us taking out the biggest

person in prison so Oliver is gonna be the OG he's gonna be the hotshot in

there it's just amazing I'm so looking forward to next week's episode

anyone guys as you know I've been doing this arrow stuff on my channel for such

U.S ARMY GETS ELECTRONIC WARFARE TACTICAL VEHICLE (EWTV) - Duration: 4:26.

United States Army now has its own Electronic Warfare Tactical Vehicles (EWTV).

As per reports, the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team "Greywolf," 1st Cavalry Division fielded

the Army's new EWTV recently and is testing it.

The U.S Army's Rapid Equipping Force is driving this program.

The Rapid Equipping Force provides out of box solution to U.S Army's pressing requirements

that are time taking to acquire through the traditional procurement process.

The EWTV is part of an effort to enhance the US Army's capabilities in the area of electronic

warfare (EW).

It is developed to meet the US Army's need to detect & jam enemy communications and network.

In this video, Defense Updates analyzes Electronic Warfare Tactical Vehicle of U.S Army.

Let's get started.

Potential rivals of U.S especially Russia has been investing in land-based EW systems.

In Syria, many such systems like Leer-3, Krasuha are deployed.

There were many reports that some U.S drones were affected by these EW systems and their

operation had to be cut short.

Jamming through EW can be done through many ways, the basic includes blocking the target

from receiving GPS signals and communication from the base.

US has been behind in terms of deploying land-based mobile EW systems and had no operational system

till now.

U.S Army relies on Air Force & Navy, which have many EW systems including dedicated EW

warplane like the EA-18G Growler.

A land mobile EW system will provide much-needed flexibility and operation freedom to the U.S Army.

This is where the US Army's new Electronic Warfare Tactical Vehicle comes in.

Lt. Col. Scott Schumacher, chief of the Rapid Equipping Force solutions team, said in a release,

"This effort will allow the ability for EW Soldiers to influence future vehicle improvements

and grow their knowledge.

This is an advanced EW technology that can provide the Army new offensive and defensive capabilities."

The system basically has two parts: Platform & Jammer.

The platform chosen is the MaxxPro MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle.

It is designed by American company Navistar International's subsidiary Navistar Defense

along with the Israeli Plasan Sasa, who designed and manufactures the vehicle's armor.

The vehicle was initially designed to compete in the US Military's Mine Resistant Ambush

Protected vehicle program, led by the US Marine Corps as well as in Medium Mine Protected

Vehicle program, led by U.S Army.

The jammer deployed is the CREW Duke electronic warfare system developed by SRC.

As per the manufacturer, the CREW Duke system uses an advanced software-defined architecture

that supports rapid reconfiguration to adapt to the constantly evolving threat environment.

The system is easy to program and allows the operator to target the particular frequencies.

The system's compact size and low power consumption make it ideal for mounting in vehicles.

Viewers may note that the Duke system was selected as one of the U.S. Army's Top 10

Greatest Inventions in 2005 and 2009.

SRC has stated that its engineers have continuously enhanced the system with many upgrades.

Though in an initial stage, it can be very well said that with the deployment of Electronic

Warfare Tactical Vehicles, US Army is taking steps in the right direction.
