Not many of you know that the real Zeeland is actually nearby – it is hiding on the edge of the Netherlands.
Not many people know about the original Zeeland for some reason.
That is why we came to uncover her secrets…
Admire her ancient cities… Explore her seashore…
and get inspiration to perform heroic feats and be like local navigators and conquerors.
We will kick-off our grand adventure in the region's capital – city of Middelburg.
Summer in Middleburg requires some adjustments.
Good thing that I came prepared.
Let us clarify what we know about this region before I show you Zeeland's capital.
What do I know about Zeeland? Dutch were the first Europeans to discover New Zealand.
They named it accordingly.
The first telescope ever was constructed here. I find that fact very interesting.
A Navigator from Middelburg discovered the Easter Island.
This region sits in Europe's lowest point below the sea level.
The Dutch pay taxes for the dams' upkeep on top of their regular property taxes.
Water canals permeate Middelburg like veins. Life of the city depends on them.
The streets are so narrow that they can barely accommodate two regular lanes.
Big cargo ships do the job of the trucks here. Canals are Middelburg's version of highways.
Since Middelburg sits on waterways, it is best to see it from the water.
My yacht looks more like a floating living room. A couch and a driver's seat.
I could not get anything bigger in Middelburg. I would need a special license for any boat longer
than fifteen meters or that is faster than twenty kilometers per hour.
I do not have money for a boat. There also is no public transport in Middelburg.
The bicycle is backpacker's best chance to see the city.
I did not get the regular bike because I want to explore Zeeland beyond Middelburg. I got an electric!
Behold my electric German steed – Kalkhoff E-Comfort.
60-centimeter aluminum frame, two 22-inch wheels, a leather seat, sports mode
and a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour!

Cruising down Middelburg's canals is glorious!
People are walking their dogs in the sunshine while I am just voyaging in my boat.
There was a small monastery here nine centuries ago.
Monks from other towns would come here to pay homage.
They built new churches, bell towers and houses.
This is how the city of Middelburg expanded. This city's soul is poetic.
Large windows look for their reflection in the water.
Narrows streets seemingly squeeze buildings tighter to each other.
A very cute town. You be the judge!
This ancient city is full of landmarks. This abbey is the city's pride.
This is where it all started.
It is over 800 years old! An entire city formed around this abbey. It is astonishing how well preserved it is!
Looks brand-new! A nine-meter tall tower graces the top of the abbey. This used to be a local skyscraper.
Locals call it Tall John.
Here is another landmark. City Hall is the most noticeable and gorgeous building in the city.
It did not lose its charm despite being 600 years old.
Statues of Burgundy rulers next to the windows look like someone installed them yesterday.
Last but not the least – the main local hangout. This is the city's main square – Market Square.
Locals sell their stuff here on the weekends.
You can often find antique things here that would make most of the museums proud.
As you can see this is a giant flee market where you can find just about anything.
So much unnecessary stuff that you absolutely need to have.
Movable bridges are another landmark of Middelburg. Tourists cruise the canals until they see them opening.
This is a part of the city's charm. My boat can go through, but I hope to get lucky.
I really want to see an opening bridge.
Do we fit? No! We will not!

Zeeland is marvelous, but there is only this much you can see from the water.
This is why I rented this great automobile.
I will use its windows to show you all of the region's beauty.
A brand-new Mercedes C-class is one of the smallest luxury cars. Ideal for the narrow streets of Middelburg.
I headed towards the North Sea beach after seeing plenty of Middelburg.
This is a place for those who truly appreciate beauty.
Greetings North Sea! The North Sea is one of the youngest in the world.
It appeared as a result of melting glaciers, making it one of the coldest as well.
The average water temperature during the summer is only 17C. The wind here is always strong.
That is why the North Sea is perfect for producing wind power. The wind is blowing me away!
I think I can really fall. Look.
It really does blow me away! The spit is flying out of my mouth as I am trying to speak!
Although it is not hot here, the atmosphere on this beach is special.
A journey across old Zeeland is like a trip inside of a fairytale.
You can see entire fields full of futuristic windmills as soon as you exit the city.
Looks like fictional future. Those do not surprise anyone in Zeeland.
Locals have been cooperating with nature for a while. You can find these windmills all over this region.
This is how the rational Dutch use wind to produce electricity. Here is how it works.
The wind moves giant propeller blades. The cogs and gears are connected to
a generator that produces electricity.
Dutch decided to tame another force of nature besides wind.
Which superpower would you choose if you were a superhero?
Dutch chose the power to control the force of water. It wasn't like they had a choice.
Otherwise, Zeeland would be flooded.
Old Zeeland is located below the sea level. The sea would chip its land off bit by bit with each coming storm.
Local engineers started a genius project called Delta Works – a flood protection system.
Let me show you this project from my helicopter so that you understand the magnitude of the scale.
Here we go!
The Delta Works incorporates a storm surge barrier with thirteen dams that protect
Zeeland from the sea like a fence.
Oosterscheldekering is a bridge on top of the dam.
It includes sixty-five concrete columns the size of a twelve-story building.
They close the gateways between columns during the storm.
Otherwise, the gates remain open so that they do not restrict the movement of sea creatures.
Here is another unusual structure – Maeslant Barrier. These two pendulums protect Zeeland from the storms.
Each pendulum is 440 meters wide and 210 meters tall and weighs more than the Eifel Tower.

Westhove Castle used to be a local bishop's summer residence.
This gothic building is well fortified and is surrounded by a moat. It is very well preserved.
Moreover, the castle is still functional – it is now a hostel!

Besides a castle hostel, you can also often find a windmill hotel
and even an exclusive hotel inside of a tower!

The cool part about this suite is not the furniture. It is the location.
My tower used to serve as a watchtower, a lighthouse and even a jail.
Nowadays it features a restaurant and a hotel with just a single two-story suite.

It turns out that Middelburg is a very provincial town. Locals prefer to spend time with their families at home.
It is windy
and lonely. Are you lonely? A human! Wait up!
Where are you off to?
Expensive restaurants are the only recreational option available in the evening. This is where I went.
I did not eat anything heavy for the past couple of days so that my taste buds can be as receptive as possible.
Why? I came to a restaurant that boasts three Michelin stars!
This is the case when the food will look down on you.
Michelin awards three stars to a restaurant when the chef
is able to make ordinary dishes look like a work of art.

Work of art #1 – Caprese salad.
This is what the classic Caprese salad looks like. It includes tomatoes, mozzarella and basil.
Caprese looks like this in Inter Scaldes restaurant.
If the three Michelin star restaurant says that this is what Caprese salad looks like then it must be true.
Tomato sauce instead of tomatoes, mozzarella mouse drops instead of the actual cheese
and pesto instead of fresh basil. All of it is covered with the salty jelly.
That is it. What was that?
It melted in my mouth instantly.
I did catch a tone of pickle juice.
The ordinary pickle juice.
Work of art #2 – a lobster.
Here is a reminder of what the lobster looks like.
Inter Scaldes served me an… Onion?
Waiter: This is an onion that is famous for the region; we serve it with a lobster.
Kolya: Lobster inside?
Waiter: Inside. Take off the hat and then eat it.
Kolya: Well Cipollino. Shall we?
They could not turn lobster into a jelly or a mousse. I definitely taste the meat.
Good lobster is good everywhere including Holland. With a hint of onion and potatoes.
I can feel my stomach applauding!
Culinary work of art #3 – dessert. Wow!
Waiter: Here we are – dessert.
Kolya: What is it?
This dessert is called The Pearl. Here is how they make it. They take sugary paste,
blow a bubble out of it with hot air and carefully make an opening.
Then they gradually fill it up with coconut ice cream and pineapple/vanilla cream.
Wow! And how to eat it?
Waiter: Break it with a spoon.
Kolya: Break it with a spoon?
Waiter: Yeah.
Kolya: I feel bad about destroying this masterpiece.
I am trying to gather myself to do this. It is so gorgeous
that I feel like a vandal when I think about breaking this pearl.
So delicious! My mouth is on hold.

I decided to dedicate my second day in old Zeeland to extreme entertainment.
There is a really interesting attraction in Zeeland. One of a kind in the entire Europe –
a boat that floats on water, underwater and jumps out of water even! It speeds up to 110 kilometers per hour.
I understand this is difficult to imagine right now. Same here. Let us see it for ourselves.
Behold – a two-seater Skyshark speedboat! This is like a supercar in the world of speedboats!
It is jam-packed with electronics. It accelerates to a hundred in just four seconds.
Everything about Skyshark's look screams aggression and adrenaline!

Instructor: It's amazing.
Kolya: It's amazing. Looks like an underwater fighter jet.

Here comes the best part!
The feeling is the bomb! You pierce the waves at a hundred kilometer speed!
Water jumps can reach five meters!
Each dive is two meters deep. You feel the power of this beast with every cell of your body.
I thought my spine would go down my underwear!
Super cool! Just the feeling of diving underwater so fast in that bathyscaphe! Incredible!
There are so many fun things to do on water in Zeeland, but my money is limited.
There is one attraction that I can afford though – body sliding!
You slide right in the water! Fourteen euros gets you an unlimited amount of sliding!
The rest is up to you.
Kolya: You can afford any activity imaginable when you have a gold card. I feel like windsurfing right now!
I can ride it until I run out of money on my gold card or when I get bored with it.
So sorry! An hour is all that I got!

I managed to ride the slide 13 times in one hour! I might have set the record!
An hour-long windsurfing class did not do me much good. It is not as easy at as it seems.
All I can say is that it is hard to do physically. Your balance has to be on point.
You also have to look out for the other riders, but it is awesome.
I will catch my breath and go right back out there. I have the money. I have time. I can afford it.
Zeeland is well known for its sea creatures. The city of Stellendam is the best place to see them.
Cannot get there on a bike. Let me try hitchhiking.

I came to Rotterdam for another walk in the city after chilling at the beach.
There is another interesting adventure waiting for me here – sightseeing bus tour.
It looks very ordinary at first. The bus takes you around town
while the guide tells you interesting historical facts about the city.
Then all of the sudden the bus drives right into the North Sea full throttle!
People usually scream when something similar happens. Not here though. People are applauding.
This is an amphibian bus – it is good to go on both land and water!
This bus can swim at the speed of eight knots! That is pretty fast. A very unusual feeling.
I am on a bus, but I am surrounded by water!
Passing gigantic ships is the coolest part of the tour!
Cognitive dissonance means checking out a cruise ship's waterline from a bus window.
This is like any regular bus tour besides the part where it dives in the water.
You get used to it after a while and it becomes a regular bus tour.
This is the type of a public transport that James Bond will ride after he retires.
I arrived at the destination after an hour on the road. Hello. Let us see.
We came to a center that helps the seals. This is a baby seal sanctuary.
The entrance fee is nine euros, but you can also "adopt" a seal if you are rich.
It only sounds weird, because you donate 500 euros for the food and maintenance and then you can come back
and release it into the wild.
You can also come and help as a volunteer if you do not have money like me. Help to clean and feed the seals.
Perhaps you can even get close enough to pet them. I want to pet them.
