How to Say "Crush on Someone" in Chinese, Japanese and Korean? - Duration: 3:19.

Hello everyone? My first YouTube 3 Languages

in 3 Minutes Channel video would be an expression for

"crush on someone" or "unrequited love"

Let's find out how each of the three East Asian countries

expresses unrequited love in Chinese,

Japanese and Korean, respectively.

单恋, 單戀 (Dān liàn) 暗恋, 暗戀 (Àn Liàn)

In Chinese, 单 means alone, single.

This word is used in many other combinations as well,

such as single-handed "单独, Dāndú"

and loneliness "孤单, Gūdān".

"恋" is another word for love "爱",

like we all know how to say I love you in Chinese, "我爱你， Wǒ ài nǐ"

Put together, the word "单恋" indicates single, lonely love.

"暗恋" is another word used to convey the same meaning

in a slightly different way.

"暗" is darkness, so the word "暗恋"

is dark love, or figuratively speaking,

loving someone in the darkness.

If someone likes somebody else from the darkness,

it may well be a secret crush.

So what's the difference between the two?

"暗恋" sounds like at an early stage

starting from secretive darkness, so someone's having a crush

and has not yet expressed it, whereas

"单恋" is at a stage after escaping from the darkness,

so the person may have expressed his or her true feeling.

片思い (かたおもい, Kata Omoi)

In Japanese, "片" is a piece, and

"思い" is a thought. So literally,

it means pieces of thoughts.

This Chinese character "片"

is derived from the word tree "木"

in that the tree split into two looks like a piece.

The word for thinking and thought, "思い"

is formed by combining this word "囟",

meaning the top of the head

with the word "心"

meaning mind.

Thus, this word "思" means the nexus of the head and mind,

where ideas and feelings are formed.

In the end, "片思い" is figuratively speaking

pieces of feeling.

A piece of feeling that is not whole yet,

and is thus incomplete.

짝사랑 (Jjagsalang)

"짝" is a pair in Korean. "사랑",

as some of you already know the phrase "사랑해요"

is I love you in Korean, means love.

So similar to Japanese, this Korean word

implicitly means a pair of love

that has not yet become reciprocal.

We have covered how unrequited love is expressed

in the three East Asian countries. "单恋,

暗恋" in Chinese,

"片思い" in Japanese

and "짝사랑" in Korean

Remember, Chinese uses dark loneliness,

Japanese a piece of feeling,

and Korean incomplete pairs

when it comes to crush on someone!
