study someone who has achieved anything of significance who has become
successful in any area of their life we have managed to do one thing very
successfully and it is this deliberate practice they focus on developing one
skill they focus on developing just one skill and they do not stop until they
have mastered it so self helper are you doing this in your life right now what
is the area of your life that you are trying to improve at keep in mind that
how do you know that which area do I really want to improve at think about it
like this why do we do something why do we want to achieve something we all want
to feel significant we want to feel important we feel like we have done
something a lot of people may opt to eat fatty foods some people may smoke some
people may drink it really depends some people may get into harmful
relationships and that's the thing we all want to feel significant we all want
to be valued in some way or another and this value that we feel it really varies
from person to person so if you're looking to master any particular skill
keep in mind try to find some area in your life where you achieve maximum
significance from doing it maximum significance maximum importance maximum
productivity and maximum value delivered to yourself and the people around you
that's how you identify the area that needs to be improve that may be you're a
small sportsman you try and improve your performance in any particular area you
want to improve a stroke you want to train harder if you want to work harder
at the gym it may be that you're a business person you're trying to improve
your business skills you're trying to deliver your presentation skills you're
trying to close the sale improve your marketing your accountancy it really
varies you're trying to become a better student
want to study harder you want to see better scores you want to be able to put
in more effort put in less effort sometimes and see better results it
really varies it varies based on what you want to see actualized once you have
the area identified recognize what needs to change start working on one skill you
heard me right not 10 skills not 20 skills not 100 skills associated with
that particular area one skill that you are not really good at but you want to
improve and you want to master focus on that skill let's say you're trying to
study and become a doctor what do I need to do I need to go through training I
need to become so good at my thing that I'm the specialist in my field so I put
myself through Medical School five years and then a specialization of two years
and maybe I want a super specialized after that I want to get even better at
a skill then I study from another couple of years there nine years here's what I
do to focus on getting so good at my skill I worked so hard I trained myself
so well that nothing is going to stop me once I'm done and how do you know that
you've gotten good at something or you're getting really really strong
people start coming and telling you hey how do you get so good I never thought
that you were so so confident in doing this and that's just the thing you need
to do this with confidence you need to do it with conviction because anything
that you want to improve at you need to do it with conviction so what is that
area of your life that you are currently trying to improve at take a pen take a
piece of paper write it down take a pen take a piece of paper and actually write
it down because you want to actually have it in front of you you want it to
be in front of you to wear here okay now I have this in front of me what do I
need to do to get it that is the amount of conviction that
you need to put into yourself if you can't even write it down you can't even
have it in front of you what are the chances that you can actually go about
achieving it because once you have it written down then you would create an
action plan and you follow through with that action plan you follow through with
that action plan until you achieve whatever it is you want to achieve and
there you focus on developing one particular skill one particular skill
set now with the doctor there may be many skill sets that need to be acquired
but focusing on one skill at a time and becoming so good at that skill that no
one can stop you that's the key for example I am currently training myself
in public speaking now what am I going to do in order to attain those skills
I'm going to do whatever it takes I'm going to go for speaking classes I'm
going to go and attend workshops I'm going to deliver lectures I'm going to
deliver presentations to where I reach a point that people come up to me which
they already have been and they tell me they become you're doing such a good job
how did you actually do it get really good at this and here's the key you
never really get to a point of mastery you're still as hungry as you were on
the day that you started that journey let's say you're into fitness you're
trying to get better at it you're trying to become the fittest person around
you're as hungry as the day that you are fat you decided to lose weight you're
still as dedicated as motivated as the day that you were so skinny and now
you're really lean and muscular that's the kind of motivation that you want to
inculcate into yourself you want to have that with you all the time creating a
sense of purpose enhances your ability to master a skill so what is your
purpose when it comes to mastering the skill that is the most critical thing if
you have your sense of purpose your road to mastery will be much much easier will
in fact be a lot easier it won't be as hard for you because you won't wake up
each and every day and say oh I need to go and train I need to get better at
this that's the thing a doctor's motivation is to save other
people's lives a public speakers motivation is to deliver some kind of
impact that either motivates an audience or leads them to do something that will
improve their lives it is the motivation of someone who goes
to the gym do not only be physically fit provide for themselves keep their health
in place but also provide for the people around them so that's where a sense of
purpose comes from if you can associate it with something that is bigger than
you deliberate practice becomes a cakewalk deliberate practice having that
purpose in place writing down in attempting to master that skill on a
regular basis and until you master the skill you do not stop that's the most
important thing so create that environment for yourself create a
platform where nothing is going to stop you until you achieve what you want for
yourself no one is going to stop you perform deliberate practice and I
promise you whatever you want for yourself in your life that will come to
