Game of Thrones S1E01 Explained (S1-S7 spoilers) - Duration: 15:04.

The final season of Game of Thrones is coming, bringing eight seasons of conflict, politics,

and mystery to an end.

But how does Game of Thrones begin?

What does the first episode reveal about the story?

Episode 1 begins with men of the Night's Watch attacked by white walkers – an ancient

threat thought to be long dead . We get a glimpse of a walker's face – and their

design changes a lot throughout the series.

But they still look very different to the walkers in the books – who are more ghostly,

and "elegant" . The walkers leave wildling corpses in a strange shape.

And we see the same shape six seasons later, in carvings made by the children of the forest

. Because the children created the white walkers , in a ritual with this spiral shape, which

the walkers also imitate.

The walkers copy the symbols of their creators . But why?

Maybe it's a warning.

Cause the walkers don't kill all these Watchmen – they seem to let Will go, showing him

a severed head, then letting him run south.

Maybe they want him to warn people that the walkers are coming.

The walkers are intelligent – they have a deal with Craster where he gives them babies,

to be turned into white walkers . And there are hints of ancient cooperation between walkers

and the Night's Watch.

Was there some agreement between humans and the walkers?

A connection between House Stark and the Night King?

How might this relate to the Wall, the world's irregular seasons, and the legendary hero

Azor Ahai?

The show's creators said there are three "holy shit moments" in Game of Thrones

– the sacrifice of Shireen, the origin of Hodor, and one more shock at the end . Maybe

we'll learn the true nature and motivations of the white walkers.

Also, if you wanna get tinfoil, this symbol of a line through a circle appears all through

the series.

It kind of looks like this badge the walkers wear – and if you zoom in some more – well

it's probably nothing.

In the next scene, we meet the Starks of Winterfell – the loving parents Catelyn and Ned, the

adventurous Bran, bastard Jon and firstborn Robb, ladylike Sansa, tomboy Arya, and young

Rickon.

They're a happy family before all the tragedies that come – the fall of Bran, death of Ned,

and burning of Winterfell, the Red Wedding, abuse of Sansa, indoctrination of Arya, death

of Jon, death of Rickon – this family suffers so much.

And while they can rebuild, they'll never get back what they'd once had.

Even now, things aren't perfect.

Catelyn resents Jon, because Jon is Ned's bastard – a living reminder of her husband's

infidelity.

Except now we know that Jon actually isn't Ned's bastard.

Jon is the son of Ned's sister Lyanna with Rhaegar Targaryen . Ned says Jon is his to

protect Jon from King Robert, who would kill Jon if he knew he was Targaryen . So all these

years, Ned lies to his beloved wife Cat, to keep his promise to Lyanna . You can see the

pain this causes – to him and Cat and Jon.

There's also tension with Arya, who doesn't fit the gender role she's expected to play.

And Theon Greyjoy is an outsider – as a ward from the Iron Islands.

He stands here with Rodrik, who Theon later kills when he attacks Winterfell.

Theon, Jon and Arya all feel like they don't fit in , and that drives them to find new

identities – Theon with the Greyjoys, Jon with the Night's Watch, and Arya with the

Faceless Men.

The Starks capture Will, the Watchman who survived the start of the episode.

He says he saw white walkers , but no one believes him.

Maybe if someone listened, and investigated, this whole story would go differently.

But the penalty for leaving the Watch is death, so Will is executed.

Ned kills Will himself, because he believes that "The man who passes the sentence should

swing the sword" . Robb and Jon later follow Ned's example . Even Theon does the same

with Rodrik . Cause Ned represents honour and justice and personal responsibility.

You can say that these values are what lead to Ned's death – but Ned's legacy lives

on in House Stark.

Compare Ned to Tywin Lannister.

He's obsessed with family legacy , and his brutality and treachery make the Lannisters

powerful.

But after he dies, his house collapses – his children turn on each other, and all his grandkids

die.

Tywin's brutal legacy fails, but Ned's survives – because he's a leader who people

truly believe in.

After the execution, the Starks find a dead direwolf and a dead stag – foreshadowing

the deaths of Ned and Robert, whose sigils are a direwolf and stag.

But the dead direwolf has six pups – one for each Stark kid.

Direwolves are mystical creatures, symbolising special destinies for the Starks – especially

Bran, who learns to warg his wolf, and for Jon, with his albino wolf.

So this is about the dying of an older generation, and the rise of a new generation – like

the passing of the seasons.

Down in King's Landing, we meet Cersei and Jaime Lannister.

Jaime is a careless , arrogant Prince Charming – so different to the responsible, humbled

Jaime of later seasons.

But early Cersei's not so different – she has all the ambition and resentment that leads

to her tyranny later on – go watch our videos on Cersei and Jaime for more.

We're also introduced to Tyrion, the lecherous Imp . He's a more lighthearted character

before all his suffering later on.

There's also much more sex and nudity in the early seasons of Thrones – Season 7

barely has any , maybe cause of criticism from the media.

We meet the prostitute Ros, who has a long arc in the show.

She moves to King's Landing, works for Littlefinger , and Varys , and gives us the perspective

of a common person among the nobility . Ros moves up in the world, and climbs her way

out of sex work . But Littlefinger finds out that she's spying on him, and gives her

to Joffrey – so Ros becomes another victim of the Game of Thrones.

Back at Winterfell, we're introduced to another important character – Jon Snow's

abs.

These abs go through some complex character development, too much to cover in this video.

King Robert Baratheon arrives, and he greets each of the Starks differently.

He touches Ned, Catelyn, Robb and Rickon – and all these characters die, while the Starks

he doesn't touch are still alive.

Robert asks Arya what her name is – just like the Faceless Men ask Arya what her name

is, when she's trained to be "no one" . Robert tells Bran he'll "be a soldier"

. Bran's injury ends his dream of being a knight , but you can say he's now a "soldier"

in the war against the white walkers.

We see Bran climbing, and it's tragic how happy he is running and jumping before he's

paralysed – and before he loses his personality, as the emotionless three-eyed raven . While

climbing, Bran sees the world from above, just like he later uses ravens to magically

see the world from above.

His whole power as the three-eyed raven is to "see" things . And this episode, Bran

sees a lot – he sees Will get killed , sees Cersei and Jaime make babies . Bran says he

sees "the king" "coming" , just like he later sees the Night King "coming"

. So there's a lot of foreshadowing happening this episode.

Robert and Ned visit the Winterfell crypts, and talk about Lyanna – Ned's sister who

Robert loved.

Robert still hates the Targaryens for taking Lyanna.

Ned says "The Targaryens are gone", but Robert says "Not all of them" . He's

talking about Daenerys and Viserys Targaryen.

But this can also refer to Jon, aka Aegon Targaryen.

So again, Ned is keeping secrets from his friend Robert.

Over in the east, we meet the Targaryens – Daenerys and Viserys.

Dany is meek and afraid, worn down by the abuse of her brother.

Showrunner David Benioff said Dany is "little more than a slave" this episode . Maybe

this experience as a slave is what leads Dany to fight against slavery in later seasons.

Daenerys takes a bath, and her maid warns that "It's too hot" – but Dany isn't

hurt.

This foreshadows the later reveal that Dany can't be burned by fire . In the books,

Dany can be burned – the thing with Drogo's pyre is a one-off "miracle" . But either

way, being the Unburnt connects Dany to the magic of fire and dragons, and perhaps to

her destiny as Azor Ahai – the hero prophesied to defeat the white walkers . The Targaryens

are hosted by Illyrio Mopatis.

He soon disappears from the show, but in the books he's a much bigger character.

He and Varys have a complex conspiracy to put a different Targaryen on the Throne.

But the plan now is to use a Dothraki army to invade Westeros, so Daenerys is married

to Khal Drogo.

Illyrio gives Dany dragon eggs – and the new Targaryen history book reveals where these

eggs may have come from.

We'll cover this in a new video, so subscribe, and press the bell.

Daenerys looks longingly at the sunset, like Luke Skywalker – a hero dreaming of something

greater in life . But then Drogo rapes her.

In the books, the sex is more consentual – Drogo asks permission, and Dany says "Yes" . She

gets some agency and control of her life.

But in the show, her growth from a slave to a queen is yet to begin.

Back at Winterfell, there's an extra playing Jeyne Poole, who has one of the saddest stories

in the books.

Jeyne is Sansa's friend, and is excited to come to King's Landing.

But her father is killed by Lannisters, and Jeyne's given to Littlefinger – who uses

her in his brothel . Jeyne is then forced to pretend to be Arya and to marry Ramsay,

who abuses her horrifically . She escapes, loses part of her nose to frostbite , and

heads for the Wall.

Some speculate she'll continue to Braavos and commit suicide at the House of Black and

White.

Sansa's innocent young friend suffers as much as anyone in Game of Thrones.

While the Starks host a feast, Jon stays outside – because "it might insult the royal family

to seat a bastard in their midst" . Ironically, Jon isn't a bastard – as a Targaryen,

he's royalty.

And Joffrey, in the feast, isn't actually royalty – he's the bastard of Cersei and

Jaime.

Jon speaks with uncle Benjen, and Jon says he wants to join the Night's Watch.

But Benjen warns him that'd mean not having a family, not fathering sons, and that Jon

might care about that "if [he] knew what it meant" . Some fans speculate that Benjen

knows that Jon is a Targaryen.

Because Jon joining the Watch would mean giving up his claim to the Throne.

Except Jon may've got out of his vows by dying then being reborn .

We get a moment with Catelyn and Sansa, and see Sansa's naïve dreams of marrying Joffrey

and being his queen.

Sansa's arc is all about her losing those illusions.

Catelyn is a woman defined by her love for her children.

And this episode, she starts to lose them.

Cersei says a beauty like Sansa "shouldn't stay hidden" in the north "forever"

. And it scares Cat to see the scheming Cersei taking her daughter away.

And rightly so – cause after this episode, Cat never sees Sansa again.

Jon meets Tyrion, who says "Never forget what you are" – "Wear it like armor"

so it can't "be used to hurt you" . This means to be yourself openly and proudly, to

embrace your identity as a dwarf or a bastard, so no one can use it against you.

Except, this doesn't really work for Tyrion – in Season 4, he's sentenced to death

largely because people believe his reputation as a conniving lecherous Imp . Maybe wearing

your identity like armour doesn't work.

Cat gets a letter from her sister Lysa saying the Lannisters killed her husband, Jon Arryn

. But in Season 4 we find out it was actually Lysa who killed Jon, under the orders of Littlefinger

. Littlefinger caused conflict between the Starks and Lannisters for his own agenda,

bringing war, death and horror on the Starks.

It's only in Season 7 that Littlefinger's brought to justice for these crimes.

Bran sees Cersei and Jaime's twincest, so Jaime pushes him from a tower – starting

Bran's arc as a psychic tree boy, and Jaime's long road to redemption.

But what'll happen if Bran and Jaime meet again?

Will Jaime make amends for breaking an innocent boy?

Will Bran even care now that he's become the three-eyed raven?

Whatever happens, Bran's fall from this tower represents change – the passing of

the Starks and the return of the Targaryens, and the end of summer – for "Winter is

coming".

Season 1 Episode 1 introduces the Starks, Targaryens, Lannisters, and white walkers.

These are the same factions left by the final season.

The Baratheons, Tyrells, Martells, and Greyjoys are all cool, but they mostly just come then

go – they're not central to the story like these guys.

It looks like the final season of Game of Thrones will end the same way it began – with

fire, and ice, and incestuous blonde people.

Season 8 is coming in April, so now's a good time to read the Game of Thrones books.

As well as the main series, there are the Dunk and Egg prequels, the worldbook, and

the new Fire and Blood history book.

Audible is offering 3 months of membership for $6.95 a month, at audible.com/asx.

Each month gets you a free audiobook – so you could get the first three Thrones books,

or all of these spin-off books, for cheaper than they'd cost on paper.

#NAVIVLOG: What happened at Major quals? - Duration: 12:38.

That's what I'm talking about, Blizzy!

That's a GG, boys.

Brood, Storm or Lina would fit just fine... Okay, Lina is banned.

Why don't you like the Alchemist pick here, guys?

- They have a high tempo draft. - Why is that? We can always take fights.

Yeah, you should be fine in lane and you can outdeny him, you're both strong.

Team Spirit 2-0, Gambit 2-0.

We have about 30 minutes.

Time for a beer break.

- What was that anyway? - That was a bug.

I'd understand if he was X-marked, but I didn't even use it.

He didn't immediately realize what was going on and was just standing there.

Yeah, he went AFK.

Se7en Esports withdrew from the qualifiers.

- Who? - Se7en Esports.

That's what playing against VP makes you do.

Zhenya, NAVI closed out the series 2-0, you had two quite good Axe games. Can you walk me through them briefly?

Well, the first game was pretty difficult for us, I played poorly in the early minutes and got a late Blink.

Game 2 was easier, I figured out what the best way to lane was:

I just cut the creepwave and they couldn't do anything.

I had my Blink at 9 minutes, we got the tempo going and dominated the game.

That's what I'm talking about, Blizzy!

Kill them, kill them! I need to finish my Octarine.

Good job!

I had so many stacks, and I stole about 20 Agility.

And that's after the nerf.

It's because of the 300 AoE change, I had like 10 kills and 17 Agility.

Yeah, 9 kills and 15 bonus Agility.

Slark with Empower is really good. Like PA.

I tweeted from my phone about getting DDoSed in 2018,

and Cybersport has already posted the news about some anonymus hacker launching a DDoS attack on the NAVI's bootcamp.

XBOCT and I would get instant noodles, a bottle of soda and we'd play all night long and everything was okay.

Nobody knows us around here, so I can arrange a game for a box of beer with someone.

We'll lose.

So, the situation is the following: we went to the PC cafe and were told we got a def-loss.

Yesterday, we received a def loss, now Igor is going to tell us what happened exactly.

We played the first map against Gambit, we won, and during the second map we started experiencing packet losses.

I immediately called the ISP, they said everything was fine on their side.

I contacted our admin, he connected remotely to our router and couldn't find any problems either.

We updated the firmware on our router just in case, but the packet loss didn't stop.

It was more or less fine until the Internet stopped working completely, and we couldn't switch to a backup connection.

Yes, we do have backup Internet connection, it's not that great, but it would still allow us to continue playing the game.

Unfortunately, it didn't work either.

We decided to go a PC cafe, but we weren't able to make it in time, because the weather was bad,

we had to wait for a taxi to arrive for a while, also the drive was pretty far.

This morning we inspected everything, we were ready to play from the PC cafe, but we needed to know what happened.

So, what happened is that yesterday because of the bad weather, the power supply voltage was low, the whole city experienced those difficulties.

The router simply malfunctioned.

So it wasn't the providers' fault, was it?

Exactly, that's why we couldn't switch to reserve connection, the problem was in the router.

Guys, it wasn't a DDoS, we have a backup connection, I get to keep my job.

Yeah, stop firing our managers, everything is fine, everyone is doing their job.

Let's kill Lone Druid.

Yes, Lone Druid!

Lion will jump on you.

I'm coming, guys.

We can wait here, they will come for sure.

I can chain stun anyone.

I won't waste it, depends on the situation.

He's dying, can you continue?

I will stun him!

I couldn't steal the RP.

I will lift him when it ends.

A post-tournament or post-qualifier chat with Andrew has already become a tradition.

Walk me through what went wrong.

We had approached the qualifiers with a great deal of confidence and determination,

and felt optimistic about our chances of making it through.

Clearly, we knew that it'd be difficult to beat VP,

but we were confident we could secure one of the two slots.

Briefly as to what went wrong.

We experienced Internet issues, it was really unfortunate and stressful

as we had to play with an insane amount of spikes from the first minute of Game 2.

Then the connection started dropping and we went to the PC cafe

hoping we'd be able to play the decider there,

but it turned out that according to the rules,

we didn't show up in time and the opponents didn't want to wait for us.

So, something like that.

Objectively, we lost two games without actually playing them.

But other than that, I don't know... It might have stressed them out a bit,

because, well, I wouldn't say the guys were playing extremely poorly today, but they were a little...

It looked as if they were kind of disorientated, at least to me.

We've already discussed the games a bit.

We could've drafted better and played better in some situations, that was what we lacked to win.

However, if we want to qualify for a Major, we have to be able to convincingly beat teams like Empire Hope.

All the guys were obviously upset at first,

about 20 minutes later, we talked and discussed that our goal now is to make it the Minor.

We've already put the Major Qualifier loss behind us,

and we're now playing pubs on the new patch and trying to expand our hero pool.

So our current goal is to get to the Minor and qualify for the Major from there.

Andrey, you know what I really like about you guys is that barely half an hour has passed since the game,

and you've already discussed things and everything's fine.

You know how it usually is with teams...

Well, I've been in this for a long time so I know how people react,

whereas you've already discussed everything and are already playing pubs together. How come?

Somehow it just happens.

It's great, did you ever experience that?

Usually, it would take a couple of hours for people to get over a defeat,

then you get together as a team, decide that it wasn't the end of the world and set out future plans and goals.

Yes, sometimes it wasn't possible to talk normally after losses.

But what we have here, it really is a professional approach.

We're happy we've qualified for the Moscow tournament,

which will give us the opportunity to play against Tier 1 teams, gain experience and test our capabilities.

We still have a few days or even a week to prepare well for it.

More than a week.

And we still have a chance to make it to the second Major.

Okay, thank you guys for supporting NAVI and staying with us.

You are in our hearts.

Give me a fist bump.

Chin up, everyone.

Vladimir Putin Visits Russia Popular Front Headquarters - Duration: 14:35.

Good afternoon, friends and colleagues.

I would like to welcome all of you, to thank the members of the previous central headquarters for their work and wish all the best to those who have taken over from them.

Your movement is very important for the state exactly because it is a public movement that has been working without red tape on behalf of the people and directly with the people, because you can feel better than government officials what people need here and now, and have the capacity to influence decisions and monitor their implementation.

The Russian Popular Front (ONF) has created a solid expert basis, which helps it work in specific areas. I do not need to say it yet again, but I will say that 11,000 illegal landfill sites have been closed thanks to the ONF's contribution to environmental protection. You also work in road building by monitoring projects on the ground, not on paper. This is invaluable.

Your work in the upcoming period will be no less or probably even more important. I will speak about this at a meeting with congress participants. The thing is that we are facing large-scale or even formidable goals, and we have allocated unprecedented funds for their achievement.

It is very important for the state, society, the nation and me personally as one of those who have initiated these projects that they are implemented as planned, so that we do not misuse the allocations but attain the expected results from these huge investments.

We must find breakthrough solutions in each area that has been designated as a priority. This would be impossible to do without public involvement, without the involvement of public organisations, primarily the Russian Popular Front.

In this connection, I would like to express the hope that we will continue to work with you as actively as before. I must say a few words about the person who has done a great deal for the ONF's development.

This person is Stanislav Govorukhin. Today I have signed an executive order on perpetuating his memory. You will see what we propose to do when you read the document. He was a very talent person and possibly a genius, with a radiant personality and a strong civic position, a true patriot.

This is all I wanted to say in my opening remarks.

601 Waiver - Hardship Letter For Immigration: Do I Need A Lawyer? - Duration: 3:32.

Do I need a lawyer to write my hardship letter for a I-601 waiver?

Question.

"I was told to write a hardship letter to keep my wife from being deported.

My nephew helped me write my letter. He's a college student.

He added about 10-15 pages of evidence.

The legal assistant helping us prepare the forms thinks this is good enough.

But one of my friends heard some bad stories about these letters.

He said I should double-check with an attorney. I'm confused."

Answer.

Without knowing more about your situation, I cannot say with 100% certainty that she needs a lawyer.

However, proving hardship is too difficult for most immigrants to try to do on their own.

The risks of losing are high.

Your co-worker gave you good advice.

Too many times, immigrants have visited my office after they already lost their hardship case.

They were told a simple letter discussing their family situation

along with a few documents like birth and marriage certificates

would be enough to prove hardship.

In almost all cases, this is bad advice.

Winning permanent residence is never that simple.

Sure, the hardship letter is important.

If completed properly, it serves to explain the main issues

you want immigration officials to know about.

Such letters are usually several pages long.

Each issue you mention in the letter should be verified

by submitting good, solid supporting evidence.

This helps to prove you're not making up false arguments.

The phrase Immigration Hardship Letter is misleading.

You really need an Immigration Hardship Packet.

As a result, there is a strong possibility

the 10–15 pages of evidence put together will not be sufficent to win your wife's case.

Hardship is one of the toughest rules in immigration law.

There is no precise definition.

Every family will incur loss if a family member is separated from them.

But the law says ordinary hardship is not enough.

You must show extreme hardship.

Sometimes you need to address many issues about your family situation.

Other times only 2 – 3 concerns are necessary.

If you can figure out what issues to focus on

and you know how to effectively assemble your evidence,

then maybe you don't need an immigration lawyer's help.

But why take such a risk?

Book Chat: Books I Love Too Much To Recommend? [CC] - Duration: 10:01.

Hello everybody, my name is Cara, and today I am here with a Book Chat or discussion video

about recommending books that are really really close to our heart, and how that's not always

something I do.

So first off I want to mention my very good friend Allie from alliembooks did a discussion

video that overlaps with what--some of what I'm going to talk about, I think hers was

more on like how to handle it when people like hate your favorite books and just like

basically getting over it, kind of clicking out of the video, just kind of curating your

Internet space and I think she talked about a lot of great things in that video, I will

definitely link that down below, and now let's get into my discussion.

So I have recently come to realize like through doing BookTube that there are a few books

that I never recommend to people, in real life or online.

And not because I don't like them, but because I love them so much and so deeply and so personally

that I have a hard time...I have a hard time like taking the chance that somebody won't

like them.

And that sounds ridiculous when you think about the fact that BookTube is a place for

recommendations, you know, so it sounds really stupid to say that I have a couple that I

just don't! *laughs* Like I just don't recommend them, like that sounds like kind of a personal

weakness situation.

And...first I want to point out that there's not--like this is not like all of my favorite

books or anything like that, like there's only maybe 2 or 3.

So it's not just any book I love I hesitate to recommend to people.

It's more like, there are a few books that I have a very personal connection to or a

very intense connection to that it's a little harder for me to recommend.

So one that comes to mind is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

And I love that book, and I actually I think I have mentioned it a few times on this channel

for like tag questions or when I'm talking about books that had a real impact on me.

But I don't think I've ever actually included it in a recommendations video or mentioned

it as like "everyone needs to read this book!"

And that's for a couple of reasons, one is like...it's SO popular *laughs* like if you

want to read that book you already know about it, I think at this point.

And if you don't want to read it, it's a very polarizing book so I don't necessarily think

I'm the one who can [or should] convince you to read it if you don't think you're gonna

like it.

Because it is a very hit-or-miss book, there are a lot of things about it that really really

work for a lot of people and that really really don't for a lot of other people.

And I was just thinking the other day how that is a book that is so important to me

that I don't want to talk about it, almost *laughs*.

Like it's a very personal experience.

And actually I have a really good friend who I know in real life and actually for the longest

time I hadn't, like I hadn't talked about that book with her, even though I had read

it recently and it was--obviously it's one of my favorites and she reads too, so like

we have talked about books before.

But it was a huge deal or at least to me it was a big step in our friendship when I gave

her the book for Christmas one year.

Because that was me like recognizing like "I think we know each other well enough to

like take this step in our friendship."

But like I said, it's not like every book I love or even every book I gave 5 stars to

or every book I would call a favorite; the number books I feel uncomfortable recommending

because they mean a lot to me is not even close to the number of books I love.

*laughs* Actually I remember a few years ago when I read The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern,

which is another very hyped, very polarizing book, I really enjoyed it: I think I gave

it 4 stars or 4.5 stars, but I had some issues with it and I hadn't seen a lot of people

talk about the specific things I didn't like on BookTube, so I went on Goodreads and I

just like read a bunch *laughs* of 1 star reviews to kind of like vindicate my feelings

about some of the things I didn't like about that book, and it was so much fun! and like

*laughs* clearly I don't have a problem hearing negative opinions of books I like, like I

do that all the time, it's not like I skip every review that disagrees with me, I don't

do that, I don't think many of us do that.

So I just think it's really odd that I have a couple books that I'm not willing to do

that with.

And this kind of goes along with what Allie was saying about like curating your space,

like she mentions that she was watching like somebody just like really rip into a favorite

book of hers that really meant something to her and she--she just clicked out of the video,

like she just like stopped watching that part, and that's totally fine!

Like that's a smart thing to do, that's a great way to handle it is just like knowing

when you don't feel like listening to someone trash something is I think a very valuable

skill, especially on BookTube where it's a community that's very...very focused on reactions

and opinions and like disagreement, in a good way, but there's definitely a lot of conflicting

opinions here and I think that is kind of a self-care skill that is really important.

So here's the reason that I kind of bring all this up: I was thinking about...like,

is this--is this dishonest of me to not want to talk about some of these? because you know

BookTube like, we are about recommending books and everything, but I think after kind of

like thinking about all the times this has happened to me, I think there is still like

a private aspect of our reading that--you know and different people handle that differently.

When it comes down to it, like it's your channel, it's your space like, you kinda get to decide

the rules and as long as people watching you understand them like it's fine.

So going back to The Book Thief, I think the reason...the reason that I don't recommend

that one is because it's not just a book I love, it's a book that...I think represents

me, as a person, in a lot of ways.

And not like in the main characters or in their experiences but just for some reason

that's one of the books that...it's like if I wanted--if I wanted somebody to understand

me, like what I love and what it is important to me or even like aspects of my personality,

I would give them that book.

And so to give it to somebody and to have them hate it, or to even be completely indifferent

to it...that would hurt.

Not because "oh I recommended this book and you didn't like it!" but because it feels

like by giving them a personal--a very personal book to me, and then having them not like

that, it's like...maybe you wouldn't like ME.

And I know that that doesn't really make sense, and actually me and my very good friend Rocky

from blonde with a book [I got permission to share this! :)], the other day on Twitter

we were having a conversation about Avatar: The Last Airbender, and there's one character

in particular that we kind of--we really disagree on, I really don't like and Rocky really loves

them and like really sees herself in that character.

And we talked about that, 'cause I didn't know that she really liked this character

*laughs* before I started like complaining about them or talking about them.

And the whole time we were talking, never once did I think, "oh, well that makes Rocky

like less of a good friend" or like "I like Rocky less because of her--of her differing

opinion on this character."

Like that never occurred to me at all! *laughs* So I don't understand why I think other people

are going to react like that.

So it's kinda weird that even having experiences like that, I still feel the need to kind of

close off *laughs* like close off part of...my...my heart? or I don't know, like the way I feel

about certain books, for fear that people are going to not like me as much.

But I also want to talk about like, I've seen a lot of, I don't know, like discussion from

people in like the book community and everything about like not taking things personally.

And I think this comes up a lot with like disclaimers and stuff where it's like just

because I hate this book doesn't mean I judge anyone who really loves it.

And I think that is like very important and I am wholeheartedly in agreement, like I think

the need for disclaimers is kind of, kind of annoying?

You know we feel this pressure to reassure everyone that we're not gonna stop respecting

their opinion or stop liking them if we disagree on a book.

I think that is definitely a valid conversation to have, but I do kind of disagree with the

part that's like "books are not personal", I guess is the part that I have an issue with.

Because...books are personal things, like part of the reason that we all I think, that

we--that we love reading so much and that we exchange recommendations and that we talk

about books, is the fact that reading is a very personal experience, with certain books,

like, not with everything!

So to say that reading is not like personal and that the reason, like that the way to

get past like all this disagreement is just to not take books personally, I think that's

a little bit disingenuous, because we do take reading personally and I think that's one

of the reasons that it's a very meaningful hobby for us, you know, is because they do

have a way, like books do have a way of telling stories that are really emotional, or that

we really connect with, maybe seeing somebody's experience that we identify with, or maybe

seeing somebody completely different from us, who we still like have this really deep

connection with.

So like, I guess to me, reading is personal, so the way to get past these disagreements

is not to--is not to deny that.

So let me see if I can sum up all of this rambling: I guess what it comes down to is...I

think...I think for a part of reading to be a very personal experience, I think that's

okay!

And I think that we should be allowed to keep some of our reading experience kind of close

to us, and--like we shouldn't feel obligated to talk about every book that's important

to us if we're not comfortable doing that.

I think that when we--when we do have like a public reviewing persona, whether that's

on BookTube or Book Twitter or whatever platform, I think that we can sometimes, at least in

my experience, talk ourselves into feeling like ALL of our reading and ALL of our reviewing

has to be very public and like we--we have this obligation to be like 100% forthright

about what we feel about a book, and I think that we definitely have a responsibility to

review things honestly, but that's kind of--like the rest of it is sort of up to us about--like

I think every once in a while, if you come across a book where it's like "I really love

this, and it means a lot to me, and I don't think I want to sit here and listen to a 25

minute rant video about how much this person hated this book."

I think we should not feel obligated to watch that, and I think that we shouldn't even feel

obligated to recommend that book to people, if we think that it might--that it might hurt

us to do so.

Hopefully that made sense.

I decided to do an experiment and to do this discussion video without my bullet point list

of notes that I usually work from, so this might have been...a hot mess *laughs* and

I'm sorry!

Please let me know if you guys have any books that you feel like this about.

Like is there anything that is such an important story to you that you avoid talking about

it, or that you avoid recommending it in the same way that you do other books?

I would be really curious to hear that, IF you feel comfortable sharing, 'cause as I've

kind of talked about in this video, it's okay if we don't always feel comfortable sharing

that.

Thank you guys so much for watching, I will see you soon with another video, and I hope

you love the next book you read.

Bye!
