Here's Why The Biggest Loser Is Totally Fake - Duration: 4:09.NBC's long-running hit reality show The Biggest Loser provided undeniable results for contestants,
like massive weight loss and enormous lifestyle changes.
But was it all legit, and were those changes all positive?
As it turns out, no, not really.
Here's why The Biggest Loser is totally fake.
While contestants appeared to be weighed once a week, that period actually changed based
on filming schedules, according to Season 3 runner-up Kai Hibbard, who has frequently
spoken out about her negative experience on the show.
"I'm saying that it would be most times longer than a week, and I believe once in my season
it was less than a week, but it wasn't always a week, no."
This means audiences at home witnessed large fluctuations in how much weight the contestants
would appear to lose from week to week.
"It's actually 20 days later that you see somebody dropping 30 pounds."
Season 2 contestant Suzanne Mendonca told the New York Post that a show doctor advised
contestants to eat baking soda to fight dehydration, but she alleges that recommendation was designed
to covertly make them retain water and thus be eliminated, so that more dramatic contestants
could stick around.
"Did you take it?"
"No, I did not.
I just walked away from it.
There was no way I was going to ingest baking soda."
Mendonca also told Entertainment Tonight that she regained 130 pounds after leaving the
show.
"There's so many unhealthy things they do on the show that are not sustainable in real
life."
She told the GLOBE,
"I was eating baby food.
I'd wrap myself in garbage bags to sweat.
We would use the sauna for six hours a day.
People were passing out in the doctor's office."
Other contestants went even further with their allegations, claiming staff encouraged them
to take illegal drugs, including Adderall and the FDA-banned weight loss substance ephedra.
2008 contestant Joelle Gwynn, who was coached by Bob Harper, told the New York Post,
"He goes away and his assistant comes in.
He's got this brown paper bag that's bundled up.
He says, 'Take this drug, it'll really help you.'...
I was like, 'What the f--- is this?'
I felt jittery and hyper [after taking it once]."
Authorities launched an inquiry into the show in May 2016.
The program has denied the accusations, saying in a statement,
"We prohibit the use of any illegal substances, in addition to the many other rules and procedures
of the show that are designed to ensure safety."
Past contestants have revealed that the televised weigh-in scale isn't actually even a real
scale.
"When they step on the scale, don't even know their real weight and how much they dropped."
She added that contestants are weighed two days prior to the episode's weigh-in.
An executive producer eventually set rumors about the scale to rest, telling the Today
show that contestants are, indeed, weighed beforehand and the weigh-in on the big, snazzy
scale is just a prop used for television.
Contestants desperate to stay on the show sometimes resorted to extreme and dangerous
measures to lose a few last-minute pounds.
Season 1 winner Ryan Benson wrote on his blog that he was so desperate to win that he abstained
from eating solid food for the last ten days before the final weigh-in.
And for the entire last day, Benson claims he put absolutely nothing in his body, not
even water.
He wrote,
"In the final 24 hours I probably dropped 10-13 lbs. in just pure water weight.
By the time of the final weigh-in I was peeing blood."
"I sat in a sauna, and I ran on a treadmill in a rubber suit and did whatever I could,
you know, it was very unhealthy what I did."
While the show made it clear that contestants were exercising constantly, it didn't show
just how much.
According to The Guardian, competitors were actually grinding out six to eight hours worth
of exercise a day.
Not only is this far more workout time than is recommended by doctors, it's also much
more than the average person could reasonably commit to.
"I can't…"
"YES YOU CAN!
Don't you can't me."
A National Institute of Health study confirmed several contestants' claims that the show
wreaked havoc on their metabolisms and left them prone to quickly gain back the weight
they lost, and more, after returning to regular life.
The show has denied the allegations.

(ENG SUB)There is a song that has sorrow and joy at the same time? MAMAMOO - Wind Flower MV reaction - Duration: 11:04.Hello everyone. This is GoToe
Today's MV is MAMAMOO new song WIND FLOWER in BLUE'S album
This is 3rd album of 4 season 4 color project
1st, Starry Night
2nd, Egotistic
and this is for SOLAR
Solar's color, BLUE
and S from Solar
So, BLUE'S
Remembering the first and second images is still alive, and it is time to see the third one, and 2018 is almost over.
Let's take a look at what kind of melody and lyrics this time
Unlike the old music video, it feels very rough
Previous film feeling
I think here is HONGKONG
The concept of this song is lonesome?
Feeling of this MV is really sensitive like IG
I will try to interpret it
Concept of MAMAMOO is always certain
They are talking about the loneliness after separation.
So far is the overall feeling
I think here is HONGKONG
I am sure when I see that buildings
A double-decker bus that is like the symbol of Hong Kong
How can the concept change so much every time they make series?
If you listen to all three songs, it's really different.
Especially in concept of each MVs
Oh... I know that place, that building is so special
Like previous film movie
Failed in last scale
Shooting in Hong Kong is the best choice
Had I not liked you then
When I think about autumn, the first emotion that comes to mind is desolate, so all the latest songs are songs on the theme of farewell.
That is real MOVIE
They never smiled in this MV yet
I saw a laugh when HWASA danced
But main emotion of this song is Lonesome i think
I want to go abroad.....
Fail
Coming coming...
LONESOME>..
There are not many cases where the middle of the song is empty like this.
COOL
Nice production
The appearance of the master of the pub
It seems to be watching Hong Kong movies in the 80s and 90s.
Look at her!!
OMG
It seems like friends are gathering and comforting after separation.
FORGET HIM!!!!!!!!
Mcdonald...?
MCdonald.. Soft icecream at the end...?
At the end they seem to forget laughing
Mcdonald... Icecream...
Yes we saw WIND FLOWER, their new album BLUE'S
Obviously I saw a music video and I feel lik seeing a movie
I've never imagine a mood like this
If you have seen the first and second series, you will agree.
It's hard to find a common part of a singing song in the same group
The atmosphere and feelings are all different. This time they seem to be singing the dullness of autumn.
But it is not sadness, it seems to overcome the sadness at the end.
As you can see from the lyrics, the wind makes me feel better, There is a lonely, happy night.
Typical songs focus on the sorrow of parting, making the listener feel sad
If not, I can show courage as 'I can live without you.'
But it's the first time I've ever heard a song with both.
That is MAMAMOO
As I mentioned before, the atmosphere of this song and the atmosphere of Hong Kong goes well together....
If you've been to Hong Kong, you know, the nightlife in Hong Kong is world famous.
There are so many buildings in high buildings.
At night, all the buildings will light up and fire the laser.
But do you know about Hong Kong Noir movies?
He wears a long trench coat and has a really lonely figure with a toothpick in his mouth.
So there is no better city than Hong Kong to express these two opposing feelings.
There is nothing more to say about the song. I can always believe and hear
It's amazing how they thought I would embrace both joy and sorrow in a song.
And it is even more wonderful to express it perfectly
The music video is really unique.
As you can see from the music videos of other singers, this is not the case.
While expressing lonely emotions, they show a black and white screen or a distorted screen, but they seem to have actually gone past
It does not just mimic it, but it always shows something.
It really looks good because it gives the impression of going to the 80s and 90s.
RESPECT them
For example, like this
Normally people could wear a pants and a jacket for me to feel like a boy.
But they actually dress up as men.
It looks really good because it shows something so surely without imitation
Never disappoint. Believe and listen
I am already looking forward to what the fourth series will look like.

Winter Travel Safety Tips (Damsel in Defense Tools To Help You) - Duration: 12:51.I hope your morning is off to a much better start than mine it was a rough
one my little boy decided to wake up about
1:30 and then if we literally just got up and got out of bed 3:30 this morning
so that it's been really fun today as you can tell from the title I want to
talk about winter travel safety tips you're going to visit family or you're
gonna go visit friends this holiday season now is the perfect time to talk
about some tips for those of you that may maybe don't
know me my name is Meredith Rines, I'm an Independent Damsel Pro with Damsel in
Defense we are a company built for women our sole mission is to help equip women
was with self-defense tools and products to help better protect themselves
educate these women on how to use these tools and just more knowledge on how to
be better prepared so that they feel empowered if a situation arises and that
a lot of times a lot of people think that when we talk about self-defense
we're thinking of someone attacking us and yes that has a lot to do with what
we sell and what we offer but in reality a lot of times it's just being better
prepared so we do have a lot of products that help women just feel better
prepared more confident and just safer when they are by themselves or when
they're traveling even with their family and their young kids you know here in
southeast Missouri it is cold it is really cold they are predicting snow for
tomorrow you know one of the first things that I would always recommend is
take a look at your tires are your tires still good for winter I know that
recently I had to go and get my tires change I had to go buy new tires I had
to go get the amount to go check your tires out if you don't know the trick
you take a coin and you will flip it upside down to where the head is upside
down in the tire if it reaches the top of the coin of the head on the coin then
you need new tires so you could also go by the tire gauges and things like that
that will do it electronically you can go ahead it looked at at you know an
automotive store if you really don't know but go make sure that your tires
are good for winter you can get some good ones at some local stores local
automotives I got mine from tire rack calm because
they were a little bit cheaper and the ones I wanted that rated high for my
vehicle my local place did not sell them for the price I got at tire rack so just
go make sure that your tires are safe and ready to go for winter air pressure
is good and all four tires just take a quick look before that the winter
weather really hits the second tip I want you to have is I
want you to have a emergency kit this kit should be in your car all year long
but I want you to add a few things to it for winter so for instance damsel and
defense cells what we call it junk in the trunk
it is a kit it's got jumper cables gloves emergency blankets it's got rain
ponchos it's got a whistle it's got a first-aid kit it's got all these things
in it to help you be better prepared if your car breaks down or maybe you you go
to start it in the parking lot at the mall and it doesn't want to start
anymore or something like that so it is a kit for that but even if you don't
want to go purchase the junk in the trunk which I would highly recommend
still create your own so you're going to need jumper cables you're going to need
a first aid kit and you can get all of this at Walmart you can go get it from
Amazon you can you know create your own first aid kit for us I have a first aid
kit and then I actually added burn cream and I added allergy medicine and
benadryl to it because I have super bad allergies so does our Sun and that one
time we went camping my husband got burned and I added burn ointment and
cream to our first-aid kit like the very next day when we got home you can adjust
your first aid kit however it fits your family and your needs but have jumper
cables first aid kit gloves so that if you have to change a tire you can do
that you also want to have some sort of rain poncho or something like that so
that if you do have to get out in the rain you are a little bit more protected
now when it comes to winter time my biggest thing that you should be adding
to that is things to help you when it's cold out so you need to add a blanket
you need to add boots and heavy socks possibly even a coat in a you know a
like a winter hat you need something so that way if you are stranded and you've
got a walk um you know half a mile or you've got to change the tire and it's
snowing out the last thing you want to do is do that in some light cardigan
because that's all you've grabbed for the day and you don't want to you know
what if your car isn't starting you don't want your kids freezing in the
back so make sure that you have a blanket and some boots
some heavy socks and maybe even a coat or two for everyone in the back of the
car and you can you know get a plastic tote you can get a big old you know 31
bag and create your own emergency kit if that's what you want to do
I also recommend for winter time making sure that you have an ice scraper in
your car I can't tell you how many times in college I was like out in the parking
lot with a credit card like scraping the ice off my windshield because I always
forgot my ice scraper and I always had like a plethora of them in my apartment
because that's the one thing my dad always gave me and yet I somehow always
forgot to put it in my car snacks for your kids if you've got
toddlers I've got a little boy who's two and a half
trust me snacks can be a huge lifesaver for you so make sure that you have
snacks for everyone and if you have pets include those as well include snacks are
a little bit of dog food for them my mom who used to travel for work a lot she
you know worked a few hours away so she would come home on the weekends and
there was one time and it was they starting to snow she's trying to get
home they were shutting down highways like the highway right behind her she's
just trying to get home she got about 45 minutes away from our house and they
shut down the highway they shut down every road that got to you know the
small town where she got stopped at to our town and she had her little Westing
her little tribal dog with her and she was stranded there was nothing there was
no stores open because the weather was so bad and so she you know barely got a
hotel room luckily she carried a ziplock bag full of dog food she just some for
some instinct had that in her car and luckily she had it so now not only does
she have snacks that she could eat and water and things like that so make sure
you have water but she also had dog food for her dog and that is a huge relief
when you're traveling and you've got you know your kids with you if you're you've
got your dogs with you you know you're at least knowing that you're taking care
of the people that rely on you for food so I have snacks
I've got dog food I've got bottled water you want to make sure you also have a
knife because the last thing if you need to cut
thing open if you need to you know screw a screw on something knows what but make
sure you have a knife so you need to have some sort of box a plastic tote or
a big bag and you need to have jumper cables a blanket a first-aid kit
gloves winter hat coat maybe a rain poncho you'll also need a knife some
snacks some bottled water and I also recommend a flashlight as well and this
is one thing that I am super guilty of is that I have flashlights
I you know I used to carry two or three in my glove box didn't know if they
worked so make sure that you go out you check the batteries in your flashlight
or you grab like a rechargeable flashlight I'll show you the one that
damsel in defense carries and this actually I grabbed it out of my car this
morning it is a six in one auto tool flashlight so what is really cool about
this is that it is rechargeable so you can easily plug it in it's also a
charging Bank so that way if maybe your car dies and your cell phone's dying
you've got a call for help you got to call 9-1-1 you've got a call for maybe
you got an accident you got to call a tow truck or something and your phone's
dead because trust me moms who let their kids play with their phone have probably
experienced a dead battery because of that so this is actually a charging Bank
it comes with a USB cable so that way you can easily charge your cell phone
and you can easily charge it from your cigarette lighter or USB port in your
car as well which is what I do it's got a flashlight so it's a pretty bright
flashlight I'm trying not to blind you it's a pretty bright flashlight it also
has a little bit dimmer of a flashlight so that way you don't have to use the
whole battery and then it also has a strobe light as well another part that I
really like about this is that is this right here these five dots are actually
magnets so you can easily stick it onto the roof of your car and then you can
turn this on and now look you've got a beacon you can easily call for help
you can tell police officer hey I slid down into a ditch I'm not exactly sure
where I am but I'm gonna have a red flashing light on the top of my car
somewhere between mile marker you know twelve and eight
come find me it just makes it a little bit easier for someone to spot you it
also has one of those really loud alarms I shared this in my last live video with
the holler his the personal alarms it also has one of those so I'm gonna click
it on and you're probably gonna hear my dogs take off Shh yeah it is very loud
it is very list time I did not hold it to my ear like I did last week so this
is a really great tool like I said it is rechargeable so if you you know forget
to change the batteries because that's just that's I mean that's who I am
you can easily say oh and you charge that grab it out of the console plug it
in while you're taking off on the road and guess what it'll be charged when you
need it another great feature about this is that right here this is a seat belt
cutter if you for some reason get into an accident or something happens and you
need to cut your way out of your seat or cut your kid out of the back seat out of
their car seat to get them out of the vehicles because it's safer I know a lot
of times you see on highways you know when the roads slick one car slides into
another and another and another and it's just non-stop the last thing you want to
do in a situation like that is stay in your car you're going to keep getting
hit so if you can't get yourself unbuckle because you've been in an
accident it locks up or you can't get your kid unbuckled at least you can grab
this tool here slide it cut it and get yourself out away from more wreckage
another great feature is that it's got this here which is a tea glass punch but
it's a breakaway glass punch so that way if you are stuck in some situation and
you can't get your door open and you desperately need to get out of your car
you can uncap it take this and now you can break your window out so that you
can get out of your vehicle so this is something that I would recommend
everyone carry in their glove box or in their console if it's not necessarily
this six in one tool maybe it is something else but find a flashlight
find a knife find a glass punch find something that will help you feel better
prepared and safer when you are traveling I know a lot of times I take
off by myself with our little boy even if it's just around town or
you know go on a little little ways out of town it nothing makes me feel better
than feeling having some sort of tool to help me feel better protected so this
tool here is a great addition to your roadside emergency kit so when you are
traveling in the wintertime you just want to make sure that you have things
in your car to help you feel protected like I said that blanket the water the
jumper cables maybe even some salt so that if you get stuck on the road or you
get stuck in someone's driveway you can pour a little salt out and now you can
easily get yourself out if you wait till the first snow or the first ice you
probably are not going to find salt anywhere in any store in your town but
you could always grab cat litter I use that a lot in college because it was
cheaper than the salt and I always waited until it was too late so you can
always grab something like that to help you get out of a bind but if you've got
questions on what kind of roadside kit you need make sure you leave a comment
below and I'll help you get whatever items you feel best with inside your kit
help you find the places that you can easily get them at the best price thank
you so much for watching

CLICK ON VIEDO TO GET 20k MANA! Achievements (Most Best) - [v4.1.4 Update] - Summoners War - Duration: 6:37.Basically just replicated the whole thing with guilds and kind of made it
so you also get achievement points which at the end of the day you are gonna be able to return those and
Get a lighten dog scroll in theory. I doubt that I will ever reach that sort of rank
I doubt that I will ever reach that sort of rank. I doubt that. I will ever reach that sort of rank. Oh boy
Oh boy
Oh boy, the new update released yesterday and I already did one video kind of critiquing one aspect about it
But little did I know the actual in-game
Rewards that come to us introduced the community doesn't really seem to be too happy about it
So in today's video, I want to take a look at them and kind of give them some improvement suggestions
We also got a couple of memes that I found on reddit after like five minutes of research
So let's just get right into the video. Shall we?
So it turns out that the one time where I actually take my time to edit an intro for the video the next day
That's gonna be the day where come to us decides to fix an issue right away
And do your one hour patch to fix all of the problems that people were complaining about well, not really
But at least they tuned them some of the achievements before people even notice at this point
I do want to actually congratulate counters for their fast response. It's still a long way to go
But thanks for your contribution to the mean economy
Player new achievements error compensation
Hey just was wondering is this an out of season April Fool's joke
But don't you need mana
Alright, alright that's enough of the meaning for today
I'm gonna just quickly look through the achievements with you guys and kind of see what country has changed
So from what I've heard back at launch
They had achievements such as finishing Guardian 3 things of that nature and I feel like those sort of things I find
It's ok for those sort of things to be in the game
but one you actually have really good rewards that pretty much everybody wants to have such as
The light and dark all that come to us kind of promised everybody
I mean whenever come to us introduces something
In the sort of like event former people are automatically I just want to have it and they got like really mad if they're not
able to access it
I mean
I'm just thinking about homunculus and how people got like extremely agitated
Back in a day when they realized that they are not able to form it as mid-game player
And I do have to agree that I feel like those sort of rewards
I would give it you pretty much everybody like the light and dark skull if you try really hard and if you're
Sort of early endgame in my opinion. It's totally fine to give out those like dark Scrolls what other games do whenever they do?
Achievements they end up giving a lot of those cosmetics or things that actually do not have a lot of impact on the game itself
To people so if you look at the statues that you can buy from the crafting shop where you have to clear
let's say Giants beat and Dragons beat an necro v10 and
Some sort of elemental Guardians. I feel like that's a pretty good metaphor for how come to should be approaching those sort of things
I mean, obviously
Clearing Giants beat and at this point it's not the biggest challenge in the game right now
but kind of just make it an optional thing for people to
Have some additional decoration have some additional cosmetics to show off to other people
I know that a lot of people actually really are
into those sort of status things in a game to show how much time they've invested to show how much
Dedication they have another option would be just giving a Lea for instance additional stuff that she can wear
Maybe a different mount that you can get after you have at least like let's say 30 mounds you get an additional amount
Is some sort of like collectors mount that you only get and people realize that people recognize that would be a really interesting
Addition when I first looked at skins. I kind of thought they would pretty much go the same route
and again
this would be a perfect option for come to us to have some additional rewards for instance get Guardian one in arena and
Give people some additional skins
I know that that would take a lot more effort and
Programming but at the same time they kind of showed it
They do want to go for these sort of routes when I look at let's say the RTA skins
Well, come to us shows that they are not only doing stuff for people that actually pay them money
Even though obviously when you reach Guardian chance, you must have spent a couple of bucks on the game already
So before I end today's video
I do want to ask you guys one more question as you guys can see I got three not 5s that we pulled over the
Last let's say two or three month and I finally finished actually devil mining all of my real units that I utilize
So now it's gonna be time for me to decide between those three units
I do also have already six start - sure that I could potentially build for some cleave teams
So this question goes out to you guys which one out of thousand at five?
Do you guys want me to build and test I know that the wind paladin he is a really strong unit in general
But the thing is that my account I don't have a fire Phoenix. I don't have a mole long
I don't have a retouch units that go very well with her
So because of that reason I mean, she's still a really amazing healer and stuff, but she's not totally game-changing for me
So going for a philia for let's say one of those Katarina cliffs for RTA things of that nature
Would in theory be something worth looking into in my eyes and same goes for the fire. Hell lady rocky
first of all
I already have both other hell ladies fully built and I'm using them and I really love them
And I definitely like her second skill. So let me know the pros and cons of either one of those units
Let me know if you already built one of them because I'm actually curious
Until then see you guys in my next video. Bye. Oh before I forget I want to know instead
I'm gonna be in Berlin on the 8th till the 11th December
So if you guys are in the area, let me know
I'm gonna be meeting with a couple of come to us employees. Maybe visit the office again hang out with them
Maybe record some streams
We're gonna have to see but it would be pretty cool if I could be hanging out with some of my subscribers as well maybe
Go out for some drinks
something along those lines
Just let me know in my comment section or just hit up my private EMS if you wanna maybe arrange something else wise

How To Say Common English Expressions! | Small Talk - Duration: 22:41.Well hey there! I'm Emma from mmmEnglish!
In this lesson, we'll go over the pronunciation of some
really common English expressions that native speakers
use when they first meet someone.
Hello, how are you?
I am well, thank you.
Do you have plans today?
Would you like to get a coffee with me?
I'm afraid I can't today.
Perhaps we could meet another time.
That's not a problem.
I suggest you call me when you are available.
Did you understand that whole conversation?
I think that you probably did
and I also think that most native English speakers
that you come across, they don't actually speak like that,
right?
If only everyone spoke as clearly and with such
good pronunciation.
But let's take a look at a more realistic conversation,
something a little similar to what you'd
hear in the real world.
Hey how you going?
Hey, not too bad.
What are you up to today, do you want to grab a coffee?
I'd love to but I'm a bit busy today.
I've got a few things on later.
That's cool.
How about you give me a call when you're free?
So native English speakers have a habit of
reducing and contracting words when spoken
and we linked sounds together when we speak
so it's really difficult to know where one word ends
and another word starts. It's especially common
when we use everyday expressions,
really common ones. We use them so much
that we get lazy with our pronunciation.
But that can make it really hard for English learners like
you who are practising with conversation that's like this
but most of the time this is the actual situation.
So in this lesson I'm going to go over some common
and natural English expressions that you'll hear
and maybe even use yourself every single day.
By the time that we're done, you'll have a better idea
what these expressions mean and how to respond
but you'll also know how they're pronounced naturally
by native English speakers.
And it could be quite different to what you think
and make sure that you hang around until the
end of the lesson because I've got a surprise for you
and a few bonus expressions to practise with me.
Let's start at the beginning. There are lots of different
English greetings. Things that we say when we first
meet someone.
Good morning. How are you? All of those things.
But let's focus on 'How's it going?'
So this is kind of a strange one.
How's what going? I'm not going anywhere.
'How's it going' is a really common greeting.
It's an informal way of asking someone how they are.
So you might even say this to your boss,
if you get on well together.
But you probably wouldn't use it in formal situations
You would use it when you call your friend.
Say "Hey, how's it going?"
If you ran into your neighbour at the supermarket,
they might say to you "How's it going?"
It's informal it's friendly and it's used all the time.
So let's take a closer look at the pronunciation.
So firstly, we don't pronounce the full verb 'is',
we combine 'how' and 'is' together
to make a contraction 'how's'.
It's really unnatural to say 'How is it going?'
in this context so make sure you use the contracted
form like native English speakers would.
So notice how the letter S is pronounced
as the voiced /z/ sound, right?
Next trick. When a word starting with a vowel
follows a consonant sound, any consonant sound
but in this case /z/
then we can link those sounds together.
Not
Bit
They should push together those sounds 'how's it'
and finally you may not hear a native speaker
pronounce the final G here in 'going'.
So this expression is really casual you'll often just hear it
pronounced with /n/ at the end instead of
So that's 'goin' instead of 'going'
So let's put it all together.
'How's it going?'
The intonation goes down at the end.
You try it!
Awesome! That sounds really good!
Alright let's try another now.
When this happens all the time, a time when you're
getting introduced to someone new.
Someone that you've never actually met before
but you know a lot of information about them.
So maybe it's the husband of your colleague
and your colleague talks about her husband all the time.
You don't know them, you've never met them before
but you know of them. You know some information
about them.
Well then when you meet them it's really common to say
"I've heard a lot about you"
It's a really nice way of saying my friend tells me
about you all the time.
I feel like we know each other already.
Really friendly and it's so common
and it's a very polite response.
I've heard a lot about you.
So for example
"Hey this is my friend from uni that I always talk about."
Ah, yeah I've heard a lot about you!
So nice to meet you.
Let's take a closer look at the pronunciation.
'have' at the start of the sentence.
It usually joins together with the subject
in spoken English so it becomes a contraction.
for example.
Not 'I have' but 'I've'.
Make sure you have that consonant sound
coming out right it's one that you sometimes forget
isn't it? On the end.
Now the H of 'heard',
it often gets a little lost here.
It's like the sound from the end of 'I've'
links directly to the vowel in 'heard'
Now these words all pull together, don't they?
You can hear those sounds coming together
and in fact we hear the flap T there as well.
Well in my Australian accent you do and it's also
really common to hear that in American accents as well.
But the T almost sounds like a /d/ sound
and that happens often in English when the letter T
is between two vowel sounds like here.
Now even though the letter T is at the end of the word
'lot' it's followed by a vowel sound and in spoken English
these words would pull together
so you get a T between two vowel sounds.
It makes /d/ sound.
With that T at the end, you'll hear a stop T.
So I don't fully release the air after that T
to make a complete T sound. Not
but
Don't release the air.
Let's try it all together now.
Your turn.
I've heard a lot about you.
Now if you said that to someone, it's really common
for them to say back to you
all good things I hope,
like "I hope that everything you heard about me was
positive".
So be ready for that. You might even decide to say "Yeah
Of course all good things!
I've heard all good things about you!"
All right so we've broken the ice a little there but now
where do we go? What next?
What are you up to? Up?
What are you up to?
If you've ever been confused by this expression,
you're not alone,
it's even confusing for me when I think about it.
'What are you up to' is another way of saying
what are you doing now?
If you're curious about what your friend is doing,
you could say "Hey, what are you up to?"
Or you can use it with another time expression
to ask about future plans.
Do you have any plans tonight?
What are you up to on the weekend?
Do you have any plans on the weekend?
So this expression has a couple meanings.
So when we start looking a little closer at the
pronunciation, it gets really interesting.
Now remember that flap T from before .
Here it is again.
In spoken English, 'what' and 'are' come together.
The two vowel sounds make the the T sound
turn into a D.
The word R is unstressed here so it reduces right down
to become the schwa sound.
And 'you' also reduces down as well.
We hear the schwa.
So 'what are you' becomes
And you'll hear that question all the time
in spoken English.
It's kind of confusing, isn't it? But understanding
how these words are spoken will help you to understand
more native English speakers.
But let's get back to this question.
So the unstressed schwa and the
vowel sound that you hear in 'up' are very, very similar.
So they actually pull together.
So you really just hear 'you' as the
sound.
Crazy huh?
And you wonder how sometimes it's really difficult
to understand native English speakers, right?
You have a go.
Now it's important to note that there are a lot of
different variations between accents
so you may hear
where the ch consonant sound is used.
Try it.
So this is such a common expression in English.
If you hear a whole lot of mumbling at the
start of a conversation with a native English speaker,
don't freeze because they are probably just using
these really common expressions
and being lazy about it.
So for you, understanding how the natural expression is
different from the written words
is really, really important.
Now to answer this question,
you would simply explain what you are doing
at that moment or your future plans
if there was a time reference.
But if you're not doing anything particularly interesting
or you don't really have anything planned
then how do you answer this question?
You say..
Now it's hard to believe that even these quick responses
actually reduce down.
So we don't hear the T in 'not'
Again that -ng when spoken quickly at the end of a word
it sounds more like just
instead of
You might also say
or
So this is the unstressed form of 'just' and it sounds like
So this also helps to explain that the activity that you're
doing at that moment, it's not really important
and notice as well that I've completely dropped
the pronoun and the auxiliary verb.
I didn't say "I am just finishing this email"
I could but often native speakers will drop this
information if it's unnecessary.
So the question that was directed at me
"What am i up to?"
I don't really need to clarify that in my answer.
I'm talking about myself right?
So I dropped it, it's not that important.
So tell me what did you think of this lesson?
I hope that it was useful for you.
In a minute,
I'm going to take you on a bit of an adventure
outside of my studio to practise some more
common expressions - ones that I use all the time.
But before I do, I want you to add some common
everyday English expressions that you want me
to include in a lesson just like this in the future.
If there is any that you want to understand more then
add them into the comments below
so that I can make a lesson.
Hi!
I'm ready to practise!
Okay! Hey I've got an idea. Why don't we practise
outside? I've never really filmed outside before but
it's probably going to be really windy, bit of traffic,
but I've been meaning to do it for a while.
Do you want to try it?
Let's just give it a go, yeah?
Sure!
Alright so, 'give it a go' is something that I use
all the time.
It means to try something new, right?
Like right now, I've never filmed outside before
and I'm not really sure how it's going to turn out but
I want to just see how it goes anyway.
I would say all the time give it a go.
So depending on who you talk to,
you might hear people say "I'll give it a shot"
or "I'll give it a try" or "I'll give it a crack"
All of these expressions that have really
similar meanings. For me I always say "give it a go"
It's really easy to just roll off the tongue. I'm going to
talk about how all of these words kind of push together
when they're spoken naturally because
you will never hear someone say "let's give it a go"
but instead "give it a go"
and so what's happening is all of the words that end
in the consonant sounds, are actually linking to the ones
that follow that are vowel sounds.
So instead of
and notice how it's unstressed so it reduces down
to the schwa sound.
And also that T is a stop T which means that I'm not
fully pronouncing it, I'm not letting the air go afterwards.
I'm not saying
but
So it's stopping, I'm not releasing the air.
So that article,
its a schwa and it reduces right down.
You might even hear that T, that flap T
sounding more like a D there because naturally in my
pronunciation, with my accent,
it'll reduce to that flap T sound.
instead of
So why don't you give it a go? Try it.
Let's give it a go.
Right now, let's go.
Hang on a second I've got to get my phone.
Okay now let's go give it a go.
I'm going to take this. Hi mum.
Hey. Can I give you a call back?
I'm a bit busy. Yep.
Alright I'll talk to you soon.
Hang on a sec, I'm not coming to dinner tonight.
I'll come over tomorrow. Okay. See you.
Alright so that, I said "hang on a sec"
and I say that all the time.
It's a really casual informal way of saying
just wait a moment. It's a little bit more, you know,
because we're friends and we're just hanging out,
it's much easier, you know and much more relaxed
to use that expression so 'hang on a sec'
What's a sec?
Well a 'sec', is it's a short version of the word 'second'
so we're going to focus on the first three words
So they kind of all come together, don't they?
When I say them quickly.
And that's because the consonant sounds at the end
of these words links straight to the vowel sounds
that follow.
So the 'a', the article links straight on behind.
It's just a schwa, it's unstressed.
It's really soft and flat.
Try it with me.
Nice one!
Let's try another!
With those clouds, we might be running out of time.
We've got time for one more but let's do
'running out of time
because we are, look at these clouds.
It's a really common expression, it's an idiom
that you might already know but we're going to focus on
the pronunciation so first up we've got a contraction.
'We are', the auxiliary verb 'are'
comes together with the subject 'we're'
So instead of saying 'we are' - it sounds quite sort of
stiff and formal
but you know if you're speaking more naturally
just like a native English speaker would, you would
probably just contract those two things together.
And then at the end of 'running' usually what happens
with native English speakers is instead of pronouncing that
sound at the end, they get really lazy
and they'll just pronounce the
Then we've got 'out of time'.
Now if they're pronounced really clearly you can hear
all of those words but instead
when spoken naturally you'll hear
'out of' becomes
And thats, you'll see the flap T there. You'll see
that will reduce, that will become the /d/ sound.
That's my accent anyway. The Australian accent,
will use the flap T, same with the American one,
you might hear people say
but most commonly
And 'time' is a stressed word there,
so we hear it really clearly.
or
Why don't you try it?
Well I hope you enjoyed that lesson. It's been fun
taking you outside and I think we're going to keep going
with this we're going to keep giving it a go.
