Ghost of Tsushima Interview: Details on Sucker Punch's Next Open World Adventure | PS4 - Duration: 4:13.

JASON CONNELL: So in 2014, we came out with Second Son,

and about six or seven months later,

we came out with First Light.

And then about a year from that, PS4 Pro was starting to come out

so we wanted to support that with Second Son

and Fetch with First Light

and all the cool laser bullets that come with that.

But behind the scenes what we were really working on was

trying to figure out how do we make a new game.

Like, if we were going to depart from Infamous,

it's got to be awesome and what is the process to get there.

NATE FOX: When we were looking at our next project,

we wanted to stay open-world because we're giving authority

and power to the player,

and we didn't want to walk away from that.

We think it's integral to modern gaming

that players are in charge.

JASON CONNELL: And I think in true Sucker Punch fashion,

we answered that with,

"Hey, what does everybody at the studio think?"

And we had about, I believe it was 70, 72 pitches,

72 ideas that kind of all formed up

from various corners of the studio.

And then we try to coagulate that into like one idea.

Turns out these things are really, really hard.

NATE FOX: We thought a lot about open-world games and what makes

some open-world games just beautiful and great.

And we kind of settled on wanting to have a clear fantasy

the player like who are you,

what are you going to be doing in the game.

And then we came upon this game idea

which is awesomely simple; right?

To hear about it is to want to play it.

Who doesn't want to go to feudal Japan?

Who doesn't want to be a samurai

with a katana on their hip; right?

JASON CONNELL: When you tell somebody you get to play as a

samurai, you don't really have to say anything else.

You just say that fantasy and everybody just builds a list of

scenarios and narratives and gameplay scenes that you might

get to play in that.

NATE FOX: When we hit upon the Mongol invasion of Tsushima

of 1274, it all clicked.

Suddenly you knew who the heroes were,

who the villains were, what the stakes were for the world,

and you had a video game.

MAN: I'll ask you once again, samurai, do you surrender?

JASON CONNELL: Ghost of Tsushima is an action, stealth,

adventure game where you play a samurai in feudal Japan,

and we're taking inspiration

from the historical point in time

where the Mongol army invaded the island of Tsushima.

NATE FOX: All those locations are in engine.

They're in the world.

That's the place that you're going to defend,

a huge island filled with a lot of different places,

towns, people.

There's so much to learn; there's so much to see.

JASON CONNELL: I think player choice in this game will mean

something very different than other games we made in the past.

We really want you to have that choice of,

"Hey, that cool bamboo forest over there,

I really want to check it out.

I want to head in that direction,

and I want to see what it is."

There's no waypoint.

There's nothing that says go here

and look at this bamboo forest.

We hopefully are presenting something that's beautiful and

exotic, that's different than the current place

that you might be in,

and that will come at a world choice; right?

That's your adventure choice, like, where do I want to go.

NATE FOX: In Infamous you explore powers.

In this game, we let you explore what it is to be a samurai

inside this enormous landscape of medieval Japan.

JASON CONNELL: Here at the studio sometimes we talk about

the world as a character.

And I think that even in Second Son we pushed really hard to

make the flavors of the world come alive.

There's all these other elements that make you remember what it

really felt like to be a tourist in this place.

And we're going to do the same thing for this game starting

with some of the shots you see in the trailer.

We've been working on this game for three and a half years,

and it's exciting to be at a spot where we are finally able

to share with the world what we've been working on.

NATE FOX: And now it's just up to us

to actually deliver this fantasy,

this wonderful fantasy about being a samurai in feudal Japan.

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds - Meet the Scorcher | PS4 - Duration: 2:17.

[ MUSIC PLAYING ]

MARIJN GIESBERTZ: The Scorcher is this really aggressive,

dangerous robot.

A lot of the attacks that he uses are fire based.

DENNIS ZOPFI: As the Banuk area is the ice,

we wanted something fiery, which is the Scorcher.

RICHARD OUD: The official design for the Scorcher was heavily

based on canine types of animals like wolves and coyotes and

such.

When you look at a cheetah chasing a gazelle, for example,

the feet are always slipping,

trying to keep up with the speed that he has,

and it's such a cool thing to actually try to put into this

character as well

because you get that feel like you're being hunted by it.

BASTIAN SEELBACH: The sound design has a very rough and

gritty style.

One of the big challenges actually is balancing the fire

sounds against any vocalizations of the robot.

We used a lot of different animals,

tiger, lions, wolves, dogs.

There's even a horse in there.

MARIJN GIESBERTZ: One of the more interesting attacks that

the Scorcher has is this Ignition Boost.

He has all these thrusters on his body that he activates and

then builds up to this point where the thrusters go off,

and he gets propelled towards the player.

RICHARD OUD: When you're being attacked and you dive away,

you barely have time to turn around and prepare yourself

again for the next attack because he's already in your

face again at that point.

MARIJN GIESBERTZ: To defeat the Scorcher,

a player should move around a lot as much as possible.

BASTIAN SEELBACH: Stun it whenever you have the chance to

bring it down for a bit and then apply the big hits.

It makes it a bit easier.

Rebels Recon #4.3: Inside "The Occupation" & "Flight of the Defender" | Star Wars Rebels - Duration: 9:33.

What's up rebels fans? Andi Gutierrez at Lucasfilm headquarters.

This week we were treated with not one but two brand new episodes of Rebels

and because I love you and my job

I'm gonna take you behind the scenes of both episodes at once.

Rebels Recon starts right now!

After getting word about a new TIE Defender being tested on Lothal

Ezra volunteers to head to his homeworld despite its complete Imperial occupation.

They've burned it

They've burned it all away.

With help from an old friend the Rebels plan an attack

on the TIE Defender factory by stealing the ships flight data recorder.

Okay, I found it just give me a few minutes to remove it from the panel.

However when Thron shows up, Ezra and Sabine end up stealing the entire ship.

Only to have the Empire crash it. Stranding them all by themselves

Or so they think.

I don't understand. Why did you help us?

Dume

This week we finally saw out heroes finally returned to Lothal.

I sat down with cast and crew to talk about how the planet has changed since we last saw it,

how dangerous and powerful the new TIE Defender is,

and what it was like bringing the Loth-wolves to life. Enjoy!

In this episode our heroes finally return to Lothal for good.

What do you think this means to Ezra?

I think it means a lot to him because he's on home territory.

This is something that he's been talking about since the beginning,

is helping the people of Lothal.

This season gets so interesting with what Lothal, the planet, is actually capable of.

How the Force kind of lives through Lothal

and the presence of it.

It gets even bigger and it's cool because we're constantly bouncing around

and now to be one place for an extended period of time.

It's gonna be pretty fun.

We're back on Lothal in The Occupation

but the planet's very different from how we left it.

How has the Imperial occupation changed since season one?

Now Lothal is under Martial law.

Most importantly because it is really sort of a wartime factory.

Every resource, every bit of personnel, all of the civilian population is being

constricted to work in Thrawn's factories to build the TIE Defender.

A lot of the population, I think,

now thought, "Well, the Empire is giving us safety and security...

...through militarized police force and building these weapons."

Now they've seen the other side of that.

Which is that none of that has any interests in actually benefiting them

or protecting them because they live a life of fear.

And you're never free when you live a life in fear.

For Ezra, it's difficult because this is his home

but it's also helping him to focus on what's most important.

Which are these people that live here and what can he do for them?

It was really fun watching the reactions to the trailer

Where people assumed that the planet that they were seeing wasn't Lothal because it looked so different.

That is the matte painting that we have always used to Lothal.

It's just been updated to have way more cloud cover and sort of fires and everything.

It was meant to be completely just ravaged and devastated and burnt.

Our heroes finally returned to Lothal for good.

What does this mean to Hera?

To come back home and defend that land.

I think is important to Ezra

and it's grown to be important to Kanan as well

and I think Hera respects that.

And it sort of feels like there's so much that's incomplete in this world for them.

That feels like a kind of completion.

It's satisfying for her and I think she really hopes she can save it.

Lothal represents some pretty important things for Zeb, I think.

His time on Lothal and meeting Ezra and the crew

gave him a sense of normalcy and sort of

gave him that sense of family that he had abandoned.

I don't think he ever thought he'd feel that again.

And so I think he feels a connection to Lothal in a pretty profound way.

We see the upgraded and even more dangerous TIE Defender in Flight of the Defender.

Yes!

What makes the TIE Defender Elite the ultimate star fighter?

The speed at which it can move.

You get to see the TIE Defender moving like super fast.

And everyone realizing like, "oh my god, this thing could really turn the tide."

It's a combination of speed and shields.

So you can't just hit it once and blow its wing off.

It can take several hits.

It's the even more advanced version.

Which would really wreak havoc for the Rebellion

because they're banking on the fact that they have a fewer number of ships but they last longer.

If the Empire had invested more in the Defender than they did in the Death Star program do you

Do you think that the Original Trilogy would have gone differently?

I do!

I think it really would have turned the course of everything because they would have had a

ship that could actually go in hyperspace,

still be as good a fighter as what it was,

and I think they personally would have torn the Alliance apart.

It's a testament to Thrawn's intelligence.

Thrawn is really about winning the war.

He doesn't want to necessarily destroy his enemy as if you can get them to surrender.

The Death Star is a tempting thing to destroy worlds.

The fear that can inspire to the Emperor and Tarkin and Krennic

is a much more persuasive argument than building what they see his fighters.

It took quite a lucky shot to take down the Death Star in the beginning.

No one was really counting on there being a Luke Skywalker.

So you never know how Thrawn would have dealt with using the Death Star.

It's hard to say that the fact of the matter is that a weapon in Thrawn's hands is dangerous.

It almost doesn't matter what it is.

What went into creating the design of the Loth-wolves?

First of all, Dave loves wolves.

We that are all very well aware of how much love Dave has for wolves.

So when we found out that wolves were gonna be on the show it was a huge deal everywhere.

Because it was like, "oh my god, we got to make this wolf and it's got to be great."

Wolves and animals are traditionally very challenging to do in animation correctly.

So in production all of us were very nervous when Filoni brought this up.

We had to make sure that the wolves looked realistic but still stylized in our Rebel style.

They're pretty specific.

Even a Loth-cat doesn't necessarily look exactly like a cat.

Throughout the movies a wampa isn't exactly a polar bear or a gorilla

but you can sort of see what the analogy might be.

It's sort of always been that way with Star Wars creatures.

Wolves we're a little bit more specific than you would typically see.

It's this thing that has been dropped right into our show

that I think single-handedly added a new pivot point for the direction of the characters

as well as the look and complexity of the show as well.

Because we had to figure out, "well how do you interact with the fur on the wolf."

Hair is really complex because it depends on the animation.

Because of our timeline, it's very difficult.

We had four hundred and sixteen different controls

for the fur on the wolf to be able to move each individual little tuft and everything.

That was sort of the beginning of it. Now we did walk cycles and run cycles.

What we finally came up with, I think, really works well.

I'm actually really happy with how we finally came up with something.

Their long play, as far as what they are,

they were a very difficult thing to do because I think that things

like these wolves can be challenging for some viewers.

The wolves are definitely tied into something mystical.

So there's a lot there I hope to unpack and discover.

By some people wolves are seen as a terrible thing and something to be feared.

By others a positive thing and something that brings balance to the environment.

They are almost a nature of the Force to me of a good and an evil and a balance within them.

[R3-A3 beeps]

Hey R3! How's it going buddy? Welcome!

[Chopper beeps and groans]

Come on, what are you having?

[Chopper beeps]

[R3-A3 noises]

You?!

Not you again!

Out!

The Lucasfilm story group's Pablo Hidalgo loves a fine cup of coffee,

just about as much as he loves Star Wars.

So what happens when I interrupt his favorite moment of the day to talk about his favorite thing in the world?

Let's find out!

Hey, Pablo! I hope I'm not interrupting craft time?

Yeah, I could take a break.

Okay, cool. We've got a lot of questions about Death Troopers this week.

Oh, okay.

So first off Amanda Bakken says...

Well, the main reason is because they have information that they need to convey

that we wanted the audience to understand and that's the easiest way to do that.

But we tend to think that Death Troopers, though they may talk to each other in that garbled sound,

when they need to talk to people who aren't Death Troopers

they could speak basic just like you and me.

Okay, cool. Next question comes from Adam Kruszynski, he asks...

Given that Sabine threw those grenades and her talent in creating weaponry,

I think they're probably more than just simple smoke grenades.

They probably had something in them that she's cooked up

that helps fuddle their sensors.

Alright, thanks Pablo.

Mhmmm...

Have questions about The Occupation or Flight of the Defender?

Tweet them to @StarWars using the hashtag #RebelsRecon

and we will answer what we can online.

And now because we love doubling up on episodes this season,

here's your first look at next week's double feature;

Kindred and Crawler Commanders. Enjoy!

As you must know, I am Governor Pryce.

I assume you are Thrawn's assassin, Rukh?

I smell it.

You smell what?

I smell Lasat.

And he's not alone.

Thanks for watching Rebels Recon!

We'll be back next week with a brand new episode

but if you need more Rebels info right now.

Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds - Banuk Behind the Scenes Trailer | PS4 - Duration: 4:19.

BEN MCCAW: The Frozen Wilds is an expansion

of Horizon Zero Dawn.

It's also a brand new adventure for Aloy that opens up a new

place for her to explore

and gives her a new central mystery to kind of dig into.

JAN-BART VAN BEEK: We're going to be going to the Cut

which is a part of the Banuk territory.

The Banuk live in an area called Ban-Ur

and it's actually set in a northern part.

It's very icy, very cold, and a very hostile environment.

JOHN GONZALEZ: You're going to be going into a region that has

been settled by the Banuk.

It's not actually their homeland.

This is not a place where you're going to find

big cities or settlements.

You're going to find these kind of scrappy outposts,

places where people are trying to find footing and hold on.

Even before we began work on the Frozen Wilds,

we'd written dozens of pages about the Banuk.

But this was really an opportunity for us to flesh that

out so much more, to really focus on them,

put them in the spotlight, try to imagine all of these details

about their warrior and hunting culture,

really dive deeper into their kind of mystical beliefs,

and then find ways of having that fuel the drama of the quest

that you're going to be taking part in

as you explore this region.

JAN-BART VAN BEEK: One of the processes that we used to design

our tribes is a process we call intrinsic ideation.

And it's a process where we first of all look at where this

thing has come from.

Everything has to come from the world.

They don't really have any ability to farm,

so all of their survival is based on hunting.

You have to be nomadic.

You have to be on the move.

If there are herds moving around,

you have to move with the herds.

So these people don't build sort of settlements that have always

been there, they actually have very mobile camps that they move

along as the herds move through the landscape.

ALOY: I'm not here for glory; I'm here for the mountain.

BEN MCCAW: We work in great collaboration with all the

different disciplines here.

And the art and concept team

had a huge role in developing the Banuk.

They had really done a lot of the work in terms of how the

Banuk kind of would fit into the environment.

ROLAND IJZERMANS: Yellowstone was kind of a big part of the

inspiration for the Banuk.

It dictated their attire in the sense of what they wore and the

type of clothes.

Even the colors were picked from Yellowstone,

the prismatic pools.

It's quite an outspoken, bright color palette

compared to the other tribes.

BEN MCCAW: Our goal was really to try to think about what it

would be like to be a tribe in the natural world,

a very specific aspect of the natural world,

and then extrapolate from there.

ROLAND IJZERMANS: Unlike earth-like tribes,

we have robots roaming around.

These also dictate the belief systems,

but also their resources.

They take parts from the machines

and try to almost dress like the machines.

BEN MCCAW: The primary spiritual idea that the Banuk have

revolves around this concept of the blue light,

the blue light that you see in the machine,

the eyes of the machines.

The Banuk believe that the blue light kind of can only exist in

the machines.

That it, in fact, struggles to survive in the human heart.

The human heart can't contain this kind of ultimate expression

of harmony.

It is an ideal that they are constantly striving towards.

And this harkens back to a time when the machines themselves

were more peaceful.

JOHN GONZALEZ: We have people here who take a very grounded

approach.

They really try to think about things in terms of function

and what's the truth of the idea

rather than just what would look cool.

JAN-BART VAN BEEK: We have a very tight relationship with the

writing team.

An idea for a tribe can come both from art direction or a

concept artist or a designer or a writer,

but usually then we go into the ideation process of really

thinking how this tribe could have developed.

And then we use short stories that the writing team writes,

or we use concept art that an artist has made and really

develop it and look at it from everybody different angle.

And it's really one of the most rewarding aspects of working on

Horizon.

You really come to these lush and exotic tribes

that we can develop.
