Tomorrow, nearly 600 thousand Korean students will take the national college entrance exam.
But for the first time in its history, this year's test has been delayed by a week because
of the earthquake that struck the city of Pohang.
There are still some concerns because of the chance of aftershocks on test day.
Our Kim Mok-yeon tells us what's being done to make sure everyone stays safe.
Since last week, the government has been striving to deal with the damage from the series of
earthquakes in the area... in order to successfully push on with the nationwide exams this time
around.
[STAND UP] ed: steve "About a week ago, students were scheduled
to arrive here at the Pohang Girl's High School to take their long-awaited Suneung exams.
But for tomorrow, students who would have taken their test in this area will head to
four different test sites in Southern Pohang, away from the epicenter of the quake."
The Gyeongsangbuk-do Pohang Office of Education laid out several measures for the historic
exam tomorrow, adding that it has done everything it can to ensure the test-takers' safety.
(KOREAN) ed: steve "We can say that we are well prepared for
the Suneung exams tomorrow.
We have deployed a total of 13 doctors, firefighters and rescuers to each test-site, and in case
an earthquake occurs during the test, we have more than 240 buses to transfer students to
test-sites outside of Pohang."
Even with all the government's efforts, many test-takers in Pohang are still anxious about
possible aftershocks.
(KOREAN) ed: steve "The postponement was shocking.
I'm really excited about tomorrow, but worried at the same time.
I hope we can get through with the test without any more tremors."
Earlier in the day, test-takers visited their designated test sites for an orientation about
the test, the second such orientation this year.
But this time around, students were given evacuation training in case there's another
earthquake during the test.
Korea's education ministry previously stated that test supervisors will be given the primary
authority to make the decision on whether students should evacuate or proceed with the
test, depending on the earthquake's intensity.
