Experts studying Korea's seismic fault lines to prepare for future quakes - Duration: 2:53.
Earthquakes are very rare phenomenons in Korea.
But it's becoming increasingly clear that something needs to be done to be better prepared
against the force of nature from now on.
Oh Jung-hee pinpoints the reasons for the sudden seismic activity and what could be
in store down the road.
Korea has been traditionally regarded as an earthquake-safe country.
A few earthquakes have occurred off the Korean coast,... but not many have happened on land.
And unlike Japan,... which is located where the Eurasian plate and the Pacific plate meet,...
the Korean peninsula is relatively far away from this boundary area.
But,...
(Korean) "Earthquakes can still occur in Korea even
though the country is located within the Eurasian plate.
And that's what makes earthquake projection even more difficult.
The energy created at the plate boundaries is transferred within the plates... and then
later released through earthquakes."
According to geology experts,... there are roughly 450 active faults within the southern
part of the Korean peninsula,... with most of them concentrated in the southeast.
Among them, the largest is the Yangsan fault.
170-kilometers long and 1-kilometer wide, both last year's Gyeongju earthquake of magnitude
five-point-eight and the recent Pohang earthquake of magnitude five-point-four... occurred near
this fault.
But, it's still difficult for the government and academics to accurately pinpoint which
fault exactly caused the Pohang earthquake... as there are so many small faults connected
to the Yangsan Fault.
(Korean) "We're seeing that the earthquake broke out
from a fault that has not yet been observed or reported about."
Some experts have warned that the Pohang earthquake could be a prelude to bigger tremors.
Also, Korea's meteorological agency has analyzed... that an earthquake as strong as magnitude
six-point-two could strike the Korean peninsula.
And that's why Korea has to be better prepared for earthquakes and their after-effects...
like soil liquefaction.
Soil liquefaction occurs,... when a strong-enough quake shatters the earth,... bringing groundwater
up to the surface to mix with the soil above it.
This makes it as if the buildings are temporarily floating on water.
Geology experts have witnessed soil being liquefied at 100 spots... within two kilometers
of the Pohang earthquake's epicenter.
(Korean) "Japan has implemented a new building practice
after experiencing soil liquefaction many times.
They build buildings with pillars anchored onto the bedrock deep in earth,... so that
buildings can stay stable even if an earthquake or soil liquefaction occurs."
(Stand-up) "Korea has experienced major earthquakes two
years in a row... and there could be more in the future.
It's crucial that Korea is more aware of the kinds of faults around the country and
where they're located.
Buildings also should be designed to withstand earthquakes... to ensure people's safety.

While everyone loves some good drama now and again, some celebrities take their petty fights
way too far.
Whether they're trading blows with colleagues or romantic rivals, these stars can't help
but turn their small battles into years-long wars.
Kim Cattrall vs. Sarah Jessica Parker
They may have played BFFs on TV, but in real life, they were anything but close.
Sex and the City stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall have had their fair share
of drama over the years—and it all seemed to center around money.
In 2004, Cattrall lobbied for the show's main cast to earn 1 million dollars per episode.
And it never happened, which may have caused some resentment on Cattrall's part since Parker,
who was also an executive producer, was earning more than her co-stars.
Parker and Cattrall supported each other publicly, denying claims that they were enemies.
In 2016, Parker denied any cat-fighting between her and Cattrall, describing the cast to Howard
Stern, saying:
"This is a family of people who needed each other, relied upon each other, and loved each
other."
But the stars of the franchise certainly pointed fingers when production on the third spin-off
movie was halted in 2017, reportedly due to Cattrall allegedly demanding that execs greenlight
her other projects.
While Parker avoided calling Cattrall out to the press, Cattrall told Piers Morgan how
she felt about Parker, saying:
"I think she could have been nicer."
Co-star Willie Garson, who played Stanford Blatch, also waded into the mess in October
2017, sarcastically shading Cattrall on Twitter, writing, "Dear fans, because I'm 'toxic',
I'm going to negotiate a contract for 6 months, not come to terms, then say I never wanted
to do it anyway."
Tyrese Gibson vs. Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson
The Fast & the Furious fam had appeared to be tight-knit, so when Tyrese Gibson called
out co-star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, fans were understandably surprised.
The drama began with the news that Johnson, who played Hobbs, would star in a Fast spin-off
with Jason Statham, which reportedly pushed the release of the franchises' ninth film
to April 2020.
In an Instagram post, in early October 2017, Gibson shared Fast 9's release date, accusing
Johnson of making the franchise all about him.
He later shared an old photo of the Fast & Furious gang (minus Johnson), writing, "Diversity,
love...One Race, Fast Family…Until Dwayne showed up...I guess this whole time he had
a problem cause he wasn't the ONLY ONE on the movie poster."
While Johnson hasn't addressed the feud directly, he appeared to hint at the drama, posting:
"Big dogs eat.
Little crying puppies stay on the porch."
Sounds like this battle is far from over.
Jay-Z vs. Kanye West
Rappers Jay-Z and Kanye West used to be best buds.
However, something clearly seemed amiss in 2014 when Jay-Z and his wife, Beyoncé, were
no-shows at West's wedding to Kim Kardashian.
Two years later, West bashed Jay-Z for "Trying to act like…
Steve [Jobs]" and launching the streaming service, Tidal, even though West had initially
supported the endeavor.
Things escalated when West went on a rant during a concert in October 2016, complaining
about how his daughter, North, had never had a playdate with Jay-Z's kid, Blue Ivy.
He also blasted Jay-Z and Beyoncé for not reaching out after Kardashian was robbed at
gunpoint in Paris.
In response, Jay-Z slammed West on his 2017 album, 4:44, calling his former friend, quote,
"insane."
Jay-Z also told Tidal's Rap Radar podcast that he was upset West had brought his wife
and child into their fight, saying:
"We've gotten past bigger issues, but you brought my family into it, now it's a problem
with me."
Clearly, this beef is still on the menu.
Taylor Swift vs. Kim Kardashian
Taylor Swift's battle with Kanye West sparked an entirely new feud with his wife, Kim Kardashian.
After Swift condemned West's "Famous" track, Kardashian accused her of playing the victim,
claiming Swift knew about the song prior to its release.
In July 2016, Kardashian released footage of a phone call between West and Swift, alleging
that the songstress can be heard approving of the track.
Though Swift does seem to be in on at least part of the song's controversial content,
Swift suggested that the context of that leaked conversation was incomplete, saying, "You
don't get to control someone's emotional response to being called 'that bitch' in front of the
entire world."
After some time away from the spotlight, Swift reemerged in 2017.
In her first single off her album Reputation, titled "Look What You Made Me Do," Swift took
not-so-subtle aim at her enemies and even embraced the snake emoji assigned to her by
Kardashian's camp.
Status of this feud: ongoing.
Blac Chyna vs. Rob Kardashian
Lovers' quarrels can get ugly—fast, but Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna took fighting
between exes to an extreme.
In July 2017, Kardashian shared sexually explicit photos of the mother of his daughter, Dream,
on social media, accusing her of cheating on him, doing drugs, and only having a child
with him to "spite" her ex, rapper Tyga—who'd famously dated Kardashian's younger sister,
Kylie Jenner.
In response, Chyna hired celebrity lawyer Lisa Bloom and filed for a restraining order
against Kardashian, alleging his posts were revenge porn and domestic abuse, according
to CNN.
Since then, both Chyna and Kardashian have attacked each other online and in the press,
accusing one another of domestic violence.
While it's doubtful they'll make up, let's hope they can figure out a way to be civil,
if only for their daughter.

Countermeasures to U.S. trade commission's safeguard measures on Samsung, LG washers - Duration: 2:25.
The U.S. International Trade Commission leaned in favor of American washing machine manufacturers
crying foul play over Korean rivals making more popular products.
In response a group of experts in the Seoul's public and private sector held meetings to
gauge the impact of the move and to devise countermeasures,
Cha Sang-mi has the details.
A group of Korean officials, trade experts and senior executives of local washing machine
producers met on Wednesday... to discuss the implications of ... and possible countermeasures
to... the suggested global safeguard measures issued by the U.S. International Trade Commission
on Korean-made washers and washer parts.
At the meeting, Kang Sung-cheon, the Deputy Minister for Trade, said the Korean government
would review ways to file a joint complaint with Vietnam to the WTO if the measures come
into effect early next year.
The government will also reach out to key figures of the U.S. administration to express
their stance on the matter and minimize damage to Korean manufacturers.
Leaders of Samsung and LG also promised to contact governors and congressmen from Tennessee
and South Carolina, where the companies are building factories for final assembly, highlighting
that import restrictions would limit American consumer choice and hinder Samsung and LG's
job creation efforts in the U.S.
The meeting comes after the ITC called for a 50 percent tariff rate on Korean large residential
washers exceeding an import quota of 1-point-2 million units, at a hearing in Washington
on Tuesday.
The tariffs will come in a 3-year quota system, and will decrease each year from 50 percent
in the first year.
The ITC's move comes after American appliance giant Whirlpool made an initial complaint
against its Korean rivals, Samsung and LG Electronics, earlier this year.
The panel also placed a tariff on imported washer parts, and was split on whether to
impose a further 20 percent tariff on washers imported under the 1-point-2 million unit
quota.
The recommendation will be reported to President Trump,... who is expected to make his final
decision next February.
If ratified,... it would be the second time for Washington to impose global safeguard
limits.
Former President George W. Bush imposed temporary tariffs of up to 30 percent on steel imported
from several countries, including Korea, in 2002.

CCTV footage shows North Korean soldier crossing MDL during pursuit of defector - Duration: 2:00.
Video footage showing what exactly happened when North Korean troops opened fire as one
of their men tried to cross over to the South through the Joint Security Area was unveiled.
UN command investigators say North Korea clearly violated the armistice agreement in the process
twice during the pursuit.
Kim Hyun-bin has the latest from the defense ministry
The United Nations Command on Wednesday released a video showing a North Korean soldier defecting
to the South through the Joint Security Area of Panmunjeom last Monday.
The video shows the defector was using a jeep for his escape until it became stuck in a
drainage ditch.
As the defector got out of the jeep and started sprinting towards the Military Demarcation
Line separating the two Koreas, four North Korean soldiers opened fire at him.
Dozens of rounds were fired with several bullets hitting the defector.
The footage also shows one North Korean soldier crossing the military demarcation line for
a few seconds during the pursuit.
Soon after crossing the MDL, the soldier returns to the north side of the border.
The defector was wounded and fell unconscious on the southern side of the border.
Three South Korean soldiers crawled towards him and dragged him to safety.
The UNC Special Investigation Team said that the investigation results show that North
Korea violated the UN Armistice Agreement twice during the pursuit.
"The key findings of the special investigation team indicate that the KPA violated the Armistice
Agreement by... one firing weapons across the MDL, two by actually crossing the MDL
temporarily."
The UNC notified North Korea of these violations at the JSA on Wednesday through the normal
communications channel in Panmunjeom, and requested a meeting to discuss the results
of the investigation and measures to prevent future violations.
The UNC Special Investigation Team said on Wednesday the investigation team was made
up of personnel from Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and the United States.
Members from Sweden and Switzerland of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission also
observed the process.
