UN Command requests meeting with N. Korea over JSA incident - Duration: 2:12.

The video clearly shows that North Korean troops violated the 1953 Armistice Agreement

by crossing the Military Demarcation Line.

At this point the UN Command has not clarified what it will do in response.

Also unclear-- is North Korea's response,... with the regime remaining unusually tightlipped

about the whole situation.

Here's Park Hee-jun with a closer look.

United Nations Command on Wednesday sent a request to North Korea for a meeting through

the communications channel at Panmunjeom,... to discuss the JSA incident and ways to prevent

further violations.

There's no guarantee, however, that the North will agree to any such meeting.

For one thing, UNC and North Korea have not used the communications site in four years,

since the North called the ceasefire agreement "invalid" in 2013.

(English) - "My understanding is very clear.

It's very unlikely to have negotiation coming back from the table because North Korea perceives

this case as a very defensive and face-losing incident for their own benefits."

The North Korean military is likely to strengthen censorship and carry out more thorough background

checks for its troops serving at the border.

And that's expected to more or less put an end to soldiers crossing over.

There are also questions about how the UNC will respond.

There's no way for it to retaliate.

Rather, experts say it's likely to pursue a diplomatic solution.

(Korean) - "The UNC could decide to make North Korea

promise to make sure nothing like this ever happens again through some kind of agreement.

It could also ask the North to make a statement accepting responsiblity and/or expressing

regret over the incident."

North Korea has yet to comment.

It sent troops down to the MDL Wednesday morning to record video of UN Command reading out

the investigation,... but whether Pyongyang will respond and through what channel remains

to be seen.

Suneung: The stars behind the scenes - Duration: 2:49.

High school seniors up and down the country are hunched over their papers taking the college

entrance exam as we speak.

And,... as our reporter in Pohang touched upon,... the students aren't in this alone.

Their support teams -- made up of families, juniors and friends -- come together to nudge

them over the finish line.

Lee Jeong-yeon has the details.

One of the most important days for Korean students is upon us.

The day of the Suneung, or national college entrance exam.

The students are of course the stars of the show, but behind every great movie is an amazing

cast of supporting characters that make the stars shine.

(stand-up) It's a cold winter morning here at Bongeun-sa,

but more than 300 people are already gathered at the temple, mostly mothers praying for

their kids to ace the one-a-year test that could possibly decide the course of their

entire career.

Everyone at this temple has their child's test ID with them during prayers.

It's no mystery who they're praying for so hard here today.

(Korean) "The only thing we can do for them now is

pray.

We can't study for them or take the test for them.

So we want to give them all the energy we can get.

I'm sure all mothers feel the same way."

Some students have also come to pray with their mothers.

(Korean) "My kid has practically been preparing for

this test for 12 years.

When the test was postponed due to the earthquake it was… a really big struggle for both of

us.

But now it's finally happening so I'm here to pray for the best of him."

(English) "I'm really grateful for her, but I'm also

a little bit worried because she'd have to pray for almost seven or eight hours but her

body isn't well.

I also want her to... consider her health when she's praying."

Friends and relatives also do what they can to wish the students good luck.

And they often do this through gift sets of 'dduk ,' a sticky Korean ricecake that symbolizes

"passing the test" as the Korean word for "stick" also refers to "getting accepted."

To say the whole academic life of a Korean student leads up to this one day would not

be an overstatement.

So around this time of year in Korea, everyone comes together as one big cheerleading team,

and it is this kind of energy from friends and loved ones that help the high school seniors

go out with a bang.

CCTV footage shows North Korean soldier crossing MDL during pursuit of defector - Duration: 2:09.

Dramatic video footage was released on Wednesday showing a North Korean soldier's daring, bullet-ridden

defection through the Joint Security Area to the South.

During last week's chaotic scenes,... that were caught on camera,... UN Command investigators

say North Korea clearly *violated the Armistice Agreement *twice during its pursuit of the

defector.

Kim Hyun-bin has more from Seoul's defense ministry.

The United Nations Command on Wednesday released a video showing a North Korean soldier defecting

to the South through the Joint Security Area of Panmunjeom last Monday.

The video shows the defector was using a jeep for his escape until it became stuck in a

drainage ditch.

As the defector got out of the jeep and started sprinting towards the Military Demarcation

Line separating the two Koreas, four North Korean soldiers opened fire at him.

Dozens of rounds were fired with several bullets hitting the defector.

The footage also shows one North Korean soldier crossing the military demarcation line for

a few seconds during the pursuit.

Soon after crossing the MDL, the soldier returns to the north side of the border.

The defector was wounded and fell unconscious on the southern side of the border.

Three South Korean soldiers crawled towards him and dragged him to safety.

The UNC Special Investigation Team said that the investigation results show that North

Korea violated the UN Armistice Agreement twice during the pursuit.

"The key findings of the special investigation team indicate that the KPA violated the Armistice

Agreement by... one firing weapons across the MDL, two by actually crossing the MDL

temporarily."

The UNC notified North Korea of these violations at the JSA on Wednesday through the normal

communications channel in Panmunjeom, and requested a meeting to discuss the results

of the investigation and measures to prevent future violations.

The UNC Special Investigation Team said on Wednesday the investigation team was made

up of personnel from Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and the United States.

Members from Sweden and Switzerland of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission also

observed the process.

South Korea-China foreign ministers remark on THAAD agreement amid summit preparations - Duration: 2:21.

The top diplomats of South Korea and China held talks in Beijing on Wednesday evening...

with the remit of preparing a bilateral presidential summit next month.

But with the recent THAAD agreement fresh in their minds, both sides were keen to emphasize

their mutual roles to help repair relations.

Kwon Jang-ho reports.

South Korea and China's foreign ministers met in Beijing on Wednesday.

Laying the groundwork for President Moon Jae-in's trip to the Chinese capital next month topped

the agenda.

The two sides agreed that the visit will take place around mid-December, with the aim to

strengthen and enhance the South Korea-China relationship.

The relationship has been tested over the last year, after Beijing objected to Seoul's

decision to deploy the U.S. THAAD anti-missile system on Korean soil.

Despite the two governments reaching an understanding over the issue and announcing their intent

to 'renormalize' relations last month, Beijing's top diplomat Wang Yi, began the meeting warning

Seoul that they need to withhold their end of the agreement -- to make sure THAAD does

not encroach on China's national security interests.

(Chinese) - AP 4127159 There's a Chinese saying, "promises must be

kept, actions must yield results."

We hope the South Korean side will continue to appropriately handle this matter."

Seoul's foreign minister, Kang Kyung-wha, in turn said she considered the agreement

a valuable outcome, and hoped that it would resolve difficulties for Korean business activities...

referring to unofficial economic sanctions Beijing had imposed on Korea in retaliation

to THAAD.

(Korean) - AP 4127159 "We both realize that continued conflict is

in neither of our interests so we have reached this outcome."

Talks also moved on to North Korea.

According to Seoul's foreign ministry, Wang reaffirmed Beijing's intent to continue carrying

out UN sanctions, but added that they will use their diplomatic efforts to help create

the conditions for talks with the regime.

Kang said the two nations should work together* on that endeavor, while at the same time making

sure to suppress North Korea's nuclear activities.

The two ministers are said to have carried on discussions through to a dinner after the

meeting, spending some five hours together in total.
