Buyers beware of online scams 5 fraud busting tips for your onli - Duration: 5:04.

Buyers beware of online scams 5 fraud-busting tips for your online shopping this season

by: Zoey Sky

If you dont feel like waiting in line for hours just to buy holiday gifts, youre

probably considering doing some online shopping instead.

But before you buy anything online, check out this list of five tips to help you avoid

online scams.

More than a quarter of online scams in the U.K. happen right before Christmas, and victims

lose an estimated 893 ($1,183), which is more than double the average festive budget

of buyers.

Since British shoppers can spend as much as 400 during the holidays, scammers are eager

to catch victims off-guard as they buy all sorts of gifts over the internet.

(Related: Fraud-proof your bank accounts with these anti-identity theft hacks.)

According to a survey by Barclays, the government and retailers have their work cut out for

them since 38 percent of more than 2,000 people surveyed by the British multinational bank

revealed that they do not know how to identify a secure website.

This leaves shoppers open to all sorts of scams by fraudulent individuals.

Scammers could be having a merry Christmas this year because they might rake in as much

as a whopping 1.3 billion ($1.6 billion) all over the U.K. during the holidays.

Meanwhile, online retailers could lose at least 72 million ($94 million) in revenues.

Almost 60 percent of shoppers state that they do not feel safe when buying online, especially

in the days right before Christmas.

Samantha White, who works at Barclays and helps to protect customers from scammers,

warned, While families across the U.K. are preparing to enjoy the festive season,

criminals are getting ready to pounce on anyone who lets their guard down.

Some online shoppers also have online bank accounts, and most of them can be the victim

of online scams like fake websites, spam emails linked to offers from made-up sites, identity

scammers looking to steal personal and banking information and fraudulent payment services.

Cyber-crime is an ever-increasing problem, and it currently accounts for almost half

of all crime in the U.K.

At least 3.6 million individual computer fraud incidents were reported in the year to September

2016.

The significant rise in cyber-crime increased the total value of fraud that reached the

U.K. courts in 2016 to over 1 billion ($1.3 billion), according to separate data published

by KPMG earlier this year.

These tips from Barclays can help make your online shopping experience much safer:

Before logging in or clicking any button, make sure that the retailer website youre

on has the padlock symbol and https in the address bar.

Be wary of any deals, especially if they seem too good to be true.

Dont log in to public Wi-Fi, especially for buying Christmas gifts online.

Never share your PIN or online banking password.

Legitimate websites will never ask for them.

Monitor your bank balance so that the moment you spot any irregularities you can report

fraudulent transactions right away.

More tips for safe online shopping

If youre still worried about doing your holiday shopping online, keep these tips in

mind:

Shop using familiar websites Go directly to a trusted site instead of shopping with

a search engine.

Search results can be rigged but this wont be a problem if you know the site well.

Watch out for misspellings or sites with a different top-level domain (e.g. .net instead

of .com).

Dont give anyone your credit card number over email Online shopping stores dont

need your social security number or your birthday to complete a transaction.

But once scammers find out details like this, they can easily steal your identity.

Check credit card statements Check your statements online regularly during the holidays,

and look at electronic statements for your credit card, debit card, and checking accounts.

Keep an eye out for any fraudulent charges.

Notify your bank immediately if you notice anything wrong.

TIME Pushes Back After Trump Says He Rejected Being Their 'Person of the Year' - Duration: 1:09.

For Complex News, I'm Hanuman Welch.

On Friday afternoon Donald Trump claimed that TIME magazine reached out to him to tell him

that they were likely going to anoint him their "Person of the Year."

He also claimed that TIME said it would be necessary for him to do an interview and a

major photo shoot to acquire the title.

Finally, he says he declined because "probably" wasn't firm enough.

Less than three hours later, TIME sent out their own tweet disputing Trump's account

by saying he was "incorrect' about their method for handing out the annual designation:

While Trump has covered the magazine at least 14 times, almost all of which have come since

he announced his run for president, the one that probably easily made the most news was

the fake one that was hung in at least four of his 17 golf clubs declaring The Apprentice

a television smash.

Relatedly, in December 2015, Trump also sent out this tweet after German Chancellor Angela

Merkel was named TIME's Person of the Year

The former editor of Time, Richard Stengel, further clarified how many times Trump made

the cover of the magazine during his run as editor.

Totally normal president, tweeting about totally normal things.

That's all for now, for everything else subscribe to Complex on YouTube, for Complex News, I'm

Doki Doki Literature Club! - Kitsune Hawk - Duration: 19:13.

Warning: The following video contains spoilers, as well as graphic/disturbing imagery.

If you have not played the game being discussed or find such content sensitive, then you may

want to hold off watching this video for the time being.

Viewer discretion is advised.

Admittedly, this year hasn't been a particularly exciting time when it comes to me playing

new games, and I blame college for eating up most of my free time, and while October

became one of the most stress-filled and busy months for me, it was in the later portion

of the month that a good friend of mine personally recommended a free game on Steam for me to

try, a game by the name of Doki Doki Literature Club.

I didn't expect much of the game at first, seeing as it was a free game on Steam, as

well as a visual novel on Steam, which only brings to mind things like Sakura Spirit or

Nekopara and their myriad of related spin-offs.

(Crivens, there's a lot of those.)

Yet, for as little I expected of the game at face value, what I ended up getting out

of Doki Doki Literature Club was nothing short of an experience that had affected me more

than any other game I had played since… probably somewhere between January 2016 and

October 2015.

And even after the game was over, I found myself getting more and more fascinated by

the story of the game's development.

Doki Doki Literature Club was created by Dan Salvato, a programmer who already held credits

from working on Twitch extensions, as well as being one of the modders who contributed

to the Super Smash Bros. Brawl hack Project M, among other Smash Bros.-related modding

ventures.

Salvato had a history with anime and anime-styled games, such as Love Live: School Idol Festival,

a history which he describes as a "love-hate relationship," particularly over the recurring

issue of "moe," or things being cute and safe just for the sake of being cute and safe.

It was decided early on that Doki Doki Literature Club would be a visual novel with a darker

twist, operating under a façade of hackneyed and cutesy imagery.

To this end, Dan Salvato took inspiration from games like Yume Nikki, Irisu Syndrome,

and Eversion, games which utilize subtle, psychological horror that focuses on establishing

a clear feeling of unease that something doesn't quite feel right.

Salvato had worked on DDLC in secret over the course of two years, giving the game a

surprise release on September 22, 2017, just in time for the upcoming Halloween season,

and it spread fairly quickly by word of mouth, as well as initial support from Twitch streamers

and YouTube users.

I did want to wait a bit until after the game came out, though, both to collect my thoughts

some time after playing the game, as well as to avoid the competition of all the DDLC-related

videos produced in October.

See?

I'm not a total sellout!

But hey, don't forget to smash that like button, subscribe, and buy my t-shirts.

Enough with the exposition, though.

I'm the Kitsune Hawk, and today, I'll be sharing my thoughts on Doki Doki Literature

Club!

Things are going to get a bit… heavy here, but let us begin.

Doki Doki Literature Club's story is divided into four acts.

The first act starts out like a typical visual novel; you take on the role of a male high

school student who is debating whether or not to join any of the school's extracurricular

activities, when your neighbor, childhood friend, and metaphorical ray of sunshine Sayori

urges you to join the new literature club.

Not having much of a choice, you decide to show up to the literature club's meeting

room and are quickly introduced to the other members: Natsuki, the tsun-tsun-tsundere pink-haired

fireball who likes manga and baking, Yuri, the purple-haired wallflower who likes psychological

horror and symbolic poetry, and Monika, the brunette popular girl who seems to enjoy all

kinds of writing.

It's established pretty quickly that the literature club is trying to get itself off

the ground via a schoolwide festival, just a few days away.

Thus, in the days leading up to the festival, you'll be spending your time trying to befriend

one of the literature club members.

This is done through a minigame at the end of every in-game day, where you compose a

poem by selecting 20 words from a list of possible choices.

Each word will appeal to either Sayori, Natsuki, or Yuri, as indicated by the chibi versions

of the cast in the lower left corner.

Whoever your word choice appeals to the most will be the character you get to spend time

with the next day.

Me personally, I decided to befriend Yuri, as I saw a lot of myself in her, both through

her personality and her taste in literature.

It was really adorable seeing her get more comfortable sharing her interests and show

a bit more confidence in herself while helping her prepare for the school festival.

However, as the festival starts to get closer, things start to feel a little… off.

Regardless of who you spend time with, Sayori starts to skip literature club meetings, and

after going to check on her, she confesses to suffering from depression, something she's

always tried to hide behind her seemingly lighthearted attitude.

It was at this point that I felt like I did something wrong in how I had been playing

the game, yet despite the player character's best efforts to reassure her that everything

will be fine, the game isn't going to give you another chance to try and comfort Sayori.

The day of the festival arrives, and Sayori is nowhere to be found.

She doesn't answer phone calls, and the poem she submitted to read at the festival

is uncharacteristically dark for her.

Concerned, your player character goes to her house to check on her and make sure she's

okay…

Only to discover Sayori's body hanging by a noose.

The game glitches out violently at the sight of Sayori's suicide, as both the player

character and the player themselves are left stunned by this revelation.

When the game started up with a content warning, I figured there would be something questionable

about the game, but I really wasn't expecting to be hit this hard this early.

Sayori's suicide causes the game to reset itself, and you see very quickly that the

game seems to be stuck in an unstable state; not only have your save files been wiped clean,

preventing you from going back to save Sayori, but Sayori's image on the title screen has

been corrupted and the option for "New Game" has been replaced with scrambled gibberish

text.

Should you choose to start a new game, act two begins and the story plays out similarly

to the first act, though Sayori no longer exists in the world, and at any occasion where

her name would be mentioned, the game will loudly glitch out.

Instead of Sayori introducing you to the literature club, Monika is the one who offers this time.

That's not the only key difference, either, as you'll also notice that Natsuki and Yuri's

lines of dialogue have become particularly dark compared to how they acted before Sayori's

death reset the game.

Yuri in particular has developed a more obsessive personality, as well as a penchant for self-harm,

though she also seems determined on warning the player about Monika.

Having spent the first act of the game spending time with Yuri and helping her get more comfortable

expressing her interests, this part was close to painful trying to sit through, being forced

to watch a character I let myself get attached to quickly descend into insanity.

Just like Sayori in the first act, Yuri's condition gets worse the closer the festival

is, culminating on the weekend before the festival, in which Yuri confesses her love

before repeatedly stabbing herself in the chest and falling to the floor.

The player is forced to watch her body go through the first stages of mortis as the

entire weekend goes by, her body and the blood surrounding it going undiscovered until the

day of the festival, whereby Natsuki flees in terror at the sight.

Monika appears afterward, and after erasing Natsuki and Yuri from existence, reveals that

she was responsible for the game's events up to this point.

After the game resets itself again and enters its third act, there's nothing left of the

world but a classroom floating in the void of space, just you and Monika sitting across

from each other at a desk in the middle of the otherwise barren room.

She's in total control of what happens here, demonstrating this by datamining your computer

for your actual name and directly addressing you, the player, not the character you were

controlling up to this point.

You can't save the game, load previous saves, or skip through dialogue; really, all you

can do is just listen to Monika until she gives you a hint on what you need to do next.

It's a bit subtle, but what you have to do is erase her from the game's files, just

as she did to Sayori, Yuri, and Natsuki.

Doing so causes the game to break down once more as Monika loses her hold on the game's

code.

The game resets yet again, with Sayori, Natsuki, and Yuri all being back, but the fourth and

final act of the story proceeds without Monika.

Instead, Sayori seems to have taken on some of Monika's personality, attempting to set

the same events in motion until she is stopped by Monika, on the very last vestiges of her

existence.

Monika uses the last of her being to send the game into its credits, singing a song

she wrote for the player as she goes into the game's files one final time and slowly

deletes the entire game.

By the time she finishes and presents a final thank-you note to the player, the game is

too unstable to run properly, prompting a re-installation should you wish to play it

again.

And that's only the default story path, too.

The game seems to have quite a number of secrets that involve manipulating the files, including

a "true" ending whose requirements I'd rather not spoil, an alternate ending if you

delete Monika's character file at the beginning of the game, and even an approximation of

a romance path for Monika if you delete everyone but her at the beginning.

That's not even taking the hidden meanings of the poems or the secrets hidden in the

character files themselves into consideration—but that… that's a topic for another day.

For a game made within something as classic as the Ren'Py Engine, it's still impressive

how much Doki Doki Literature Club gets out of it.

The visual effects of the game corrupting as Monika tampers with the coding make for

both an effective immediate and long-term scare.

They're good as immediate scares because they play to the innate fear of something

being wrong with the game itself, akin to a tilted or damaged cartridge, and they also

create a sense of dread and morbid curiosity; you more than likely assume that it's only

going to get worse as you continue the story, yet you press on.

Even during act three, when Monika has wiped out everything but herself and the room you're

sitting in, she still manages to show a limited degree of sentience from within the game,

being able to detect if you're playing the game on Steam or not, if you're currently

recording or streaming the game, reacting if you try to use Alt-F4 to close out of the

game, and disabling the "skip text" button if you attempt to speed through her dialogue

with it.

Writing is definitely one of the strongest points when it comes to Doki Doki Literature

Club; when things start to get dark, the writing delivers the needed impact on nearly every

occasion.

Sayori talking about her struggle with depression isn't just painful because it's a dark

moment in a game that had been lighthearted up to that point; it's also effective because

of how realistic her description is, being scarily accurate to testimonies of people

that have dealt with depression themselves.

Not all of the hard-hitting writing is completely direct, either.

Natsuki is heavily implied to live in an abusive household, with parents that beat her over

something as simple as her interests.

It really puts her defensive personality and admiration for cute things into perspective,

as likely coping mechanisms from her tarnished upbringing.

Yuri, meanwhile, actually recognizes that Monika is interfering with her coding during

the second act, even trying her hardest to fight against it and warn the player about

what is truly happening, possibly killing herself in order to prevent Monika from doing

anything more severe with her reprogramming than what she already created.

And then there's Monika.

Just…

Monika.

Despite everything she does in the story, her conversations in the third act of the

game really flesh out her personality, as well as the tragedy involved in her side of

the story.

She's arguably the most important character in the story, being fully aware that she's

stuck within the confines of a video game, yet she's the only character of the four

not to have a direct romance route.

She's relegated to being a side character, forced to watch as the person she loves ends

up with everyone but her.

In her own words, every time the game is reset, she feels a strong pain that she can only

imagine is what death feels like.

Every playthrough of the game, then, is just a constant feeling of heartbreak and death

to her, and she tries her hardest to escape from the endless cycle.

Even though she reacts with horror and a bit of anger at her character file being deleted,

she still has it in her heart to try and restore everything to normal as she starts to fade

away, deleting it all when she realizes that no matter what, nobody in the game can ever

be truly happy—not herself, not Sayori, not Natsuki, not Yuri, and especially not

the person playing the game.

The quality of the writing really helps that painful realization come across, carrying

the storytelling from the narrative of a typical romantic visual novel to a clear subversion,

just as the developers had envisioned.

Music is an important element of setting a game's tone, especially for a horror game,

and just as the writing is a strong element of Doki Doki Literature Club, so too is its

soundtrack.

The first act of the game spends its time playing all sorts of lighthearted music that

you'd expect from a romantic visual novel, lulling you into the false sense of security

that everything will be fine.

By Sayori's suicide at the end of act one and the transition into act two, the game's

soundtrack becomes subject to corruption, just as much as the visuals.

The track that plays during the discovery of Sayori's body, labelled "Sayo-nara,"

really delivers the finishing blow to how brutally effective the scene is in transitioning

the game into psychological horror mode.

On its own merits, it's a haunting song that perfectly captures the sense of disbelief

and shock that you can imagine racing through your head after discovering that your closest

friend has hanged themselves, but it also sets a pattern by reusing melodies from the

soundtrack up to that point, now altered to carry a sense of sorrow instead of saccharine

happiness.

The once-comforting songs are, from this point on, turned into radically different pieces

of music through bitcrushing, fluctuating pitch, sudden speeding up, and being played

in reverse.

You quickly learn that whenever the background music sounds even the slightest bit off, that

something bad is about to happen, thus adding to the general uncomfortable feeling of the

story's second act.

And then in the third act, after Monika deletes most of the game's contents, even the music

gets affected, becoming a droning, minimalist piece of music vaguely resembling the normal

soundtrack that loops endlessly as you sit down and listen to Monika's conversations.

She even mentions wanting to add a piano to the background, but hesitates, believing that

she might destabilize the application even further if she did so.

That comment about Monika and the piano isn't coincidence, either, as she mentions early

on in the story that she's been practicing the piano.

Not only is a piano heard for the first time when Monika makes her initial appearance,

but it seems like the piano is also used as a symbol for Monika's presence in general,

being heard on any occasion where she might be watching or listening in to what is currently

happening, including the scenes of both Sayori and Yuri's suicides, the culmination of

her tampering with the game's programming.

Even as the credits roll and Monika begins to erase the game, she spends her time saying

goodbye by performing a piano piece that she had been working on.

It's the strong symbolic connection between the game's writing and soundtrack that really

make its themes more effective, and it's even more impressive when you consider that

both the music and writing were, for the most part, handled by just one person.

Overall, despite how little I saw from Doki Doki Literature Club at face value, I can't

deny the fact that I'm still glad I was wrong.

Yes, it's not an easy game to play due to the weight of the subject matter and the frightening

nature of its visual and auditory corruptions, but it's also a strongly-written narrative

that works both as a dark satire of romantic visual novels, as well as a tragedy on its

own merits, revolving around the idea of video game characters coming to the existential

dread of trying to break free from a reality they truly can't escape from, no matter

how strong their efforts.

However, I also think that Doki Doki Literature Club is best experienced blind, so that its

twists and shocks can be experienced in the fully intended sense of dread…

(I say after having spoiled a majority of the game's contents), so if you know anyone

that isn't fully aware of the game's existence or its darker twists, try and recommend it

if you can.

They might be mad at you for a day or three, but that just shows how well-crafted of a

game it is, for the story, dialogue, and soundtrack to evoke that kind of intended strong emotion.

Dan Salvato and the rest of the developers at Team Salvato wanted to make a game with

that kind of strong impact, and in that regard, I'd say they passed with flying colors.

Doki Doki Literature Club gets a strong recommendation from me.

And for those of you who did play through the game, what did you think?

I'd be happy to read your thoughts in the comment section below.

Until then, see you next review.
