Water Filter - Duration: 3:29.

We humans have inhabited this planet for a while now, and our activities have affected

the ecosystem in many negative ways, especially in relation to water.

As mentioned in the documentary "The True Cost," chemicals from factories have leaked

into very important freshwater sources such as the Ganges River, impacted by leather factories

in Kanpur.

Our usage of water is exhausting the supply of it and is also affecting other species

by lowering their resources as well.

This is important to us because people who consume water contaminated by chemicals and

pollution also face health problems, including various forms of cancer.

Another way this problem has affected the environment is by lowering biodiversity and

habitat diversity by increasing competition for the limited, but necessary, resource of

water.

When the species have to compete so intensely, many of them end up dying (survival of the

fittest) and this lowers biodiversity by eliminating certain species.

This, in turn, weakens the ecosystem, which can impact us humans.

In the youtube videos "Walking for Water" and "Water Walk- Wateraid," people talked

about how much they have to walk just to get a couple cups of water.

On top of that, the water they are able to access is not clean and ready for use.

They must filter this water on their own with the materials they have.

Waste water is used water that is unfit for consumption or cleaning.

It can be found not only in third world countries, but also first world countries near us.

As mentioned they can contain harmful chemicals that bind to the water molecules or other

toxic metals like lead, arsenic, or mercury, which come from pipes that water goes through.

Drinking water is water that can safely be used for consumption and the preparation of

food.

The pH level of drinkable water is around 6.5-8.5.

If the conductivity measurers anything under 50 microsiemens/cm, the water should be drinkable.

The closer it is to 0 the better it is.

Anything that doesn't meet these guidelines, or is just covered in solid particles of things

that aren't safe to drink is wastewater.

To combat all these issues, we have created a water filter that filters out ehhhhh of

these problems.

It uses 2 Dasani water bottles, a cup of activated charcoal, half a cup of coconut charcoal,

and half of cup of marble.

It also has 2 cloth meshes and 1 coffee filter.

The activated charcoal is supposed to filter out color and odor, the coconut charcoal is

supposed to remove toxic metals and chlorine, and the marble is supposed to neutralize the

pH level.

M: Since wastewater contains many dangerous particulates as mentioned, we need to represent

wastewater as accurately as possible.

To do so, we are going to use 50 ml of vinegar, 150 ml of water, a handful of dirt, and a

drop of food coloring.

We went through several trials using this water filter most of which ended in failure.

In the beginning, it could filter out large and fine particles, but however later on,

this became a problem that we couldn't fix.

This may have been because of one trial where the paper ripped and led some particles go

through, getting stuck in the activated charcoal.

The pH level was unable to change, remaining below 6pH most of the time.

The salinity/conductivity of the water was good, however there was nothing to filter

out.

This project taught us that these people in less developed countries do not live an easy

life.

Being able to actually filter wastewater into clean, usable water is extremely difficult.

Hugh Miller - Actuaries Institute Public Policy Essay Winner - Duration: 2:16.

My name is Hugh Miller and I'm an actuary. I work at Taylor Fry, a consulting

company here in Sydney, Australia.

The premise of the paper was that government

has a lot more data than it used to and the tools to use that data are

continually improving and they perhaps have more appetite to use those as well

and so the question is well how is that changing how governments deliver

their services and in particular sort of I do a lot of work in the social sector

so there's a huge amount of government spending in welfare and housing and

disability and all those programs are increasing in their sophistication on

how they use data how they use models and use prediction, so we sort of talk

about that and then in the case studies there's a few examples of how that is playing out I guess in Australia and New Zealand.

So one of the areas of

excitement I guess is with social impact investment so one one space where

actuarial modelling is actually very useful is this idea that you can make

quite good predictions about how you will save money for government and

improve outcomes and lives of people over the long term through targeted

spending so finding areas really to spend and to sort of invest earlier and

prevent types of disadvantage. It's really one of the exciting areas I

guess in terms of social sector policy

I guess actuaries probably should be, one of the reasons is that I guess we we do

pride ourselves in being fairly numerous and sort of technical and there are lots

of questions which are enhanced or the answers to those are enhanced by being

able to give a more nuanced technical answer, So I think actuaries do play a role

in sort of putting a voice forward that sort of relies on evidence and relies on

data is very useful in public policy and then government generally and the

Actuaries Institute plays a role in all of that and sort of boosting the profile of

actuaries

super-exciting so always good to hear good news and I think that the public

policy side I find really interesting sort of working in government a lot

so it was actually just sort of nice being involved in the process and the

competition is always fun
