Waching daily Jun 1 2018

Fancy a game? It's been a while.

I'm not in the mood for games, thank you.

I haven't had a real sip in ten years.

I didn't kill the President.

The bullet curved, Erik.

Because I was trying to save him.

They took me out before I could.

Why would you try and save him?

Because he was one of us.

You must think me so foolish.

We've always said they would come after us.

I never imagined they'd use Raven's DNA to do it.

When did you last see her?

The day I left for Dallas.

And how was she?

Strong.

Driven.

Loyal.

How... How was she?

She was...

We were...

I could see why she meant so much to you.

You should be proud of her, Charles.

She's out there fighting for our cause.

Your cause.

The girl I raised was not capable of killing.

You didn't raise her, you grew up with her.

She couldn't stay a little girl forever, that's why she left.

She left because you got inside her head.

That's not my power.

She made a choice.

But now we know where that choice leads, don't we?

She's going to murder Trask,

they're going to capture her...

and then they're going to wipe us out.

Not if we get to her first.

Not if we change history tomorrow.

I'm sorry, Charles...

for what happened.

I truly am.

It's been a while since I've played.

I'll go easy on you.

Might finally be a fair fight.

You have the first move.

"UNE HISTOIRE D'ÂMES" - Le documentaire sur Lamomali - Duration: 21:29.

The person, or people, who are about to receive

7,692 texts in the next 10 minutes are...

Lamomali !

When we first pitched to record labels,

they were hesitant, no one believed in it.

People are more open-minded than labels think,

so we need to embrace artists' originality.

Lamomali A Meeting of Souls

In 1999, I was inspired by my first love.

We hadn't been together for a while.

We met when we were 15,

and it made a big impression on me because she moved to Kenya,

fell in love with the country and met a guy there.

She lived like a local and even gave birth

to her first child in a hut in a village.

It made a big impression on me.

She changed her name from Dominique to Mama Sam

because her first child was called Sam.

So I was fascinated by the idea of Africa.

It was very inspiring,

it was the unknown.

I had never been there,

so I relied on my imagination.

I always dreamed about Africa.

My desire to get to know Africa was inspired by Mama Sam.

When I think she was like me

From this ice-cold country

Now that she lives in Kenya

She's a European African

No, I've never been to Africa

Then Marc-Antoine Moreau,

who was the first in the industry to believe in me,

introduced me to Amadou and Mariam

when I was just starting out.

I got on well with Amadou and Mariam,

and they suggested I perform at the Paris Bamako festival

in an institute for the blind.

It was a real revelation for me.

- See? - Cool.

I'll add that line.

That's great.

I got to meet lots of musicians.

The first time I met Toumani

was during that first trip to Bamako.

He has a mystical presence,

a special aura like a wise man,

a timeless character.

Lamomali is about

a sincere friendship between two people,

between two worlds.

Matthieu has a lot of love for Mali and Africa.

Thanks to Marco, may he rest in peace, he came to Bamako

where I met him for the first time.

And we decided to make a record together

along with my son Sidiki Diabaté.

But it all started

with the friendship and love of these two worlds.

Tiger!

We're out of the cage now.

Thank you so much.

At the moment, we're calling the album Lamomali.

Lamomali.

Marc-Antoine and I came up with Lamomali.

First recording sessions

I first met Sidiki

when I invited Toumani to Bercy.

And Toumani said he'd bring his son.

I said "That's great, but I just want to work with you".

He said "No, I always work with my son".

And then I met a very talented young man

who was just beginning his music career

although he'd played the kora all his life

like everyone in his family.

With Lamomali,

we thought of doing maybe just an album

with kora and guitar

because I have a lot of respect for the kora.

But Toumani kept saying "No, be more M, more pop".

So I went with it.

Then Pierre Juarez,

who's really part of the new generation,

came in to help make the album more pop.

At first, it was small scale.

Then more people got involved.

We needed a female vocalist.

I immediately thought of Fatoumata Diawara.

That was the dream.

I first met Matthieu

at an Africa Express concert.

I remember something happening during the song.

His voice was so soft.

He was incredibly kind and sweet.

First I thought of him as an artist.

But on stage,

when we started playing and he did his thing on the guitar,

he was like a man possessed.

He has two sides to him, and I love that.

I really like people

who always have something to give.

We had an amazing connection.

Every song from Lamomali is an experiment.

We tried to be very empirical,

almost as if we were scientists.

I remember first hearing the album.

I was so happy to see

how they managed to mix and showcase everyone.

We were experimenting.

Then suddenly,

we realised we needed female vocals.

So Fatoumata Diawara joined us.

Then we felt we needed someone to rap

to make it more direct, more street, more poetic.

So I thought of Oxmo Puccino

because my first trip to Mali was with him.

He's like a brother, part of the Malian adventure.

He is from Mali.

For me Mali is a reunion

with Uncle Toumani, with Matthieu,

who I went to Mali with 11 years ago.

It's about reconnecting with the kora,

with many things on many levels.

People got involved like that. We were doing a piece

and I thought it'd be good to mix classical and Malian music.

I called Rémy Galichet, and he did the string arrangements

combining a string quartet

with the balafon, the kora.

Solidarity is another important song

which is about universal solidarity.

I felt we really needed an artist from every continent.

So I called in my friend Seu Jorge,

and Nekfeu, who I used to hang out with back then,

Jain,

Ibrahim Maalouf, who's also like a brother to me.

So each song led us to meet new people.

It was an enriching project,

during which many new friendships developed.

We were swept up by the project.

We wanted to do something very collaborative.

This is how I see it.

At the end, we put our instruments down

and sing with the audience.

We line up at the front to take our bow together.

A team is a bit like a holiday camp.

It needs a camp leader,

someone to hold the reins,

to unite people and really listen to what they're saying,

because if you only half listen to people, it doesn't work.

We had to learn to live together.

We had different expectations, rhythms, cultures and traditions.

So unless you have the highest level of respect and communication,

it doesn't work.

Rehearsal in Yerres

This musical genre doesn't even have a name.

It's not just rock with kora...

It's such a wonderfully soft mixture

that there's no name for it.

Let's start soft and then get louder

to build up to a crescendo.

We're starting out too loud.

I remember when we were at Yerres,

as artists in residence,

I noticed my brother looked worried

because Matthieu had taken a big risk.

His audience hadn't heard of me or Sidiki.

What were they going to think?

I noticed that he was anxious.

I went to see him and said

"We're in this together, you're not alone".

He needed to hear that.

Good times!

It's like a big family.

It is a big family.

We love each other.

But what's crazy is that it's also like a big school.

Thank you everyone!

See you tonight on fire

for an amazing first show!

I've done a lot of collaborations,

but Lamomali is really close to my heart.

I asked for God's help.

We always give thanks to him,

and ask for his help before and after each concert.

It's a really important ritual.

Allow me to introduce the Afropop Orchestra.

This is Lawrence, who was with me on my last tour.

Great drummer, great singer.

Boubakar, an old friend,

who I met on my first trip.

He'd been Amadou and Mariam's percussionist for a long time.

His drumming is quickfire,

his hands are so fast and strong.

Brad Thomas Ackley and I have been working together

since we did Mojo and Îl.

He's also a brilliant musician.

He plays guitar, bass and many other instruments.

He has artistic vision, and adds an American touch.

Pierre Juarez, who deejays on the tour,

but also coproduced and directed the album.

He represents the 2.0 side of Lamomali,

adding scratching and different layers,

more of an electro sound.

Gladys is part of my past, M's past.

I called her one day and said

"Would you like to come and sing on tour with us?"

There was a pause.

She said "What, me?"

I said "You".

She couldn't believe that I'd thought of her.

She was touched.

She really added an important feminine twist to the tour.

Mountaga is a good friend of Toumani,

he's a really impressive musician and singer.

It was a joy to have him.

He turned out to be a real performer.

Mike Clinton is the king of bass.

I'd never met such a skilled bass player.

It's not just technique, he has groove,

the groove sound culture.

He's an amazing bass player,

and an unusually good, generous person.

Matthieu always finds great people,

both musically and in terms of personality,

he knows who he works well with.

Which means the group works together well.

Every person on stage is important.

Sometimes,

in other bands, there's the lead singer,

and the others are just in the background.

In this show,

every person has an important role.

Matthieu's strength comes

from his ability to unite people.

We're all united through him.

He connects us all,

and things always go well.

Thank you, we love you!

When I'm on stage and hear the audience,

it gives me new energy.

It's been easy to understand each other,

for the West Indians and Africans.

We speak the same musical language.

We feel at home.

I came back for my hat.

Never forget your hat.

There are 40 of us on tour.

We all love each other.

I was blown away by Mali.

We're a family,

a family with rules.

Rules for how to behave,

like the story about the chickens.

Chicken for everyone.

One, two, three, four...

Nothing for me.

Toumani is very funny.

When you do something he doesn't like,

he will laughingly say

that we owe him a chicken.

For more serious offences, it's a turkey.

So I started a rotisserie,

because I need so much poultry.

It's unbelievable.

Let's bring the house down.

I heard we didn't go all the way in Lyon,

there was still something left standing.

Tonight we're going to raze it to the ground.

African music is instinctive and instantaneous.

We tend to think everything through,

whereas they're more in the present.

We focus on the past, make references.

The press and the media praise products of the mind

rather than the heart.

But when you make music with Malians,

it's all about energy and spontaneity.

It's like a trance,

letting the music take you, without thinking,

which can lead to beautiful things

because all the unnecessary things fall away.

Great musicians are extremely humble.

You need to put your ego aside

to go beyond who you are

and let your instrument and your heart shine through.

That's what makes great music.

When the man and the musician are one.

It's incredible, if you try to script a project like this,

you fail.

I've seen projects come and go, get dropped half way.

It's born of coincidences,

the stars have to align.

In the end,

there are many different elements,

but the show is very coherent

and all the different worlds

come together in harmony.

No part is trying

to overshadow any other.

There's room for everyone.

It's music that comes from the heart.

Our music touches people because it has a message.

We can build bridges and bring harmony.

You can make life beautiful

when you mix all of those people, and that talent.

It's a message about being open-minded,

that openness is the key.

Mountaga Diabaté and Philippe Jaroussky.

It's the love that'll stay with me.

The love and the fraternity.

I'll have gained a sense of peace.

For me that's what matters most.

Lamomali was first performed at the French Institute in Bamako

on 25 January 2017

The tour finished with two shows at Bercy on December 18 and 19

Off the Cuff - Justin Trudeau Is Too Hot - The Opposition w/ Jordan Klepper - Duration: 6:50.

As you know, I encourage viewers

to call in and leave us voice mails,

but I never have time to listen to them.

Our crew at The Opposition has put some voice mails together

that I have honestly never heard before,

but I promise to answer any questions

and vomit my thoughts straight at you.

I have citizen journalist Tim Baltz joining me

to add his expertise.

I can't wait to tear these people new assholes, Jordan.

Right, Tim. Well...

I think those are mostly fans of the show, so...

Oh, yeah. I mean in a helpful way.

Right. Well, I'm excited to hear what you have to say.

-Chuck, let's fire up the first call. -(beep)

Hi, Jordan. This is Diane from Chesterland.

And I want to know why are all the actors in Hollywood liberal?

I mean, I feel like they're just Democratic pawns.

I get the feeling they're being told what to say,

-where to stand, how to look. -Mm-hmm.

-It's disgusting. -Yeah.

And, I mean, the whole place-- it's a liberal infestation.

Hollywood? Why not Holly coal?

-Huh. Oh, God, that's good. -(chuckling): Oh.

-Wow. -They say conservatives can't do comedy, right?

That was... She made a really, really great point,

though, all right?

And it gets to something that we have talked about on this show.

-Yup. -Is that Hollywood is scripted.

It's almost like they have people writing lines,

and then they read the lines, and then they say the lines.

Here's a funny thing.

There's an area in New York that you can go to.

They call it SoHo. It stands for "north of Houston."

-Okay. -And...

And what I've seen it is, these, uh... these libs

sell what they call "screenplays,"

and they're actual scripts of the words that are being said

in movies, in famous movies.

Almost Famous. Uh, The Godfather.

The Godfather: Part III.

Uh, and if you flip through it, it's the exact words

that these so-called actors, these, uh... these human beings,

these liberal with their own points of view...

It's the same words that they say on screen.

Hold on. Flip through it?

Are you saying that it's on paper

when they could put it on an iPad and not waste paper?

Thank you. Um...

See, this is where they're hypocritical, Jordan.

-Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. -This is where they're hypocritical.

Yeah, yeah, they want us

to cut up our little six-packs of plastic

so that birds in the ocean don't eat it and die

when birds live in the sky, and fish live in the ocean.

(laughter)

It's-it's so easy to pull this apart.

You pull one string, and the whole ball of spaghetti

becomes unra... unraveled, you know?

-It totally is. -(applause)

Unbelievable. Uh, let's hear our next call.

-(beep) -MAN: Hi, Jordan?

I got a bit of a problem.

I hate Justin Trudeau

and all of his liberal, long-haired ideas.

But I also recognize that he is a handsome man.

-Yeah. -And I'm not sure what to do about that

-Mm. -because... ooh,

I hate him so much, I want to kiss him!

-This is the category I call "Oops, he's hot." -Mm-hmm.

(laughter, applause)

You had, uh...

Obama fit in this category for just a second, right?

-Which has stopped. Yeah. -Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.

When Obama was on the campaign trail, I was, "Oops, he's hot."

-Mm-hmm. -And then, the second he put his hand on the bible

and got sworn in, I was like, "Something's not right.

-We need to take him down." -Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Well, you see a man shirtless kite-sailing,

and you're gonna have an instinctive response.

My response was, "Oops, he's hot."

Yeah. Mm-hmm. That's a human response.

People can have an "Oops, he's hot" reaction.

That doesn't mean that you're gonna support them.

That doesn't mean that you're gonna vote for them.

That means that you will eventually, uh,

probably go into a side room,

uh, turn off all of the lights,

uh, and try to repress the feelings that you have,

build that into a ball of anger and then

aim that anger at that person

that you cared about, uh, just hours earlier.

It's normal.

Uh, but seriously, shout-out to...

shout-out to you because the first time

I met you, I thought, "Oops, he's hot."

And to be honest, there are times

when Jordan still does things,

and I think, "Oops, he's hot."

So it endures.

(laughter)

(laughter continues)

-Are you gonna...? -Oh, let's get another call, Chuck.

Jordan! This is Grace from Northampton, Mass.

-Love it. -I run a mixed martial arts studio

for women and their dogs, and we have this argument all the time.

Which Founding Father would win in a cage match melee fight?

I love your show. Love you, man. Love Grace.

It's a great question.

I think obviously people are gonna go with Abraham Lincoln.

He's gangly, he's large, he has a top hat, uh...

he knows to at least be on the receiving end of a gun,

-and so, uh... -(laughter, groaning)

No, but your point is fair-- violence begets violence.

Exactly. Uh-huh, uh-huh, yeah.

That's why, like, you know, if you punish a kid with violence,

-they're gonna get tougher. Uh-huh. -Yep.

Uh, Andrew Jackson is a clear one.

Andrew Johnson, also, a tough, uh, scrappy guy.

-Yep. -Uh, Martin Van Buren, I like him.

A lot of... he... he is somebody that doesn't get enough credit.

I know... I know pneumonia took that man down.

-Uh... -William Henry Harrison?

-Was that... What'd I say? -You said Martin Van Buren.

-Are you correcting me right now? -I am correcting you.

But I have to do it for the sanctity of this show.

Martin Van Buren was the eighth president,

who came after Andrew Jackson,

-the seventh president. -Why are you doing this right now?

Why are you doing this right now, Tim?

'Cause I have to set the record straight?

Why are you doing this? -'Cause we have to stand atop

a foundation of integrity and truth.

-We also create our own records. -We have to do it.

What we do is we have our records.

And the other two foundations are anger toward the libs

and knowing that the globalists are trying to take us down.

So we have integrity, honesty, anger toward the libs...

But history is written by the winners.

...and the globalist agenda that we hate.

-History is... -Those are our four founding pillars.

-Right? -History is written by the winners.

Just like the four presidents that we have named:

Andrew Jackson, the seventh president,

Martin Van Buren, who counts as two

because he's got a long name, as the eighth president...

-Mm-hmm. -and then William Henry Harrison,

who counts-- well, he probably counts as more than two guys

because he's got an even longer name than Martin Van Buren.

I'm gonna stop talking 'cause I'm leaking secrets

-about the show. -(laughter)

-What the (bleep), man? -What?

-What the (bleep), man? -William Henry Harrison died

after... because...

After 9/11, is that what you were going to say?

There are some people that say...

I know there are.

...that his pneumonia was a way to get him out of office,

-Mm-hmm. -by the Whig Party,

and then they put him on ice, and then...

they were gonna resurrect him at any point

to become the true successor to the American crown...

-I mean, the presidency. -(laughter)

Go to Tim's blog-- he has a lot of this laid out for us.

-Yeah, that's true. -That's all the time we have today.

But if you at home have any questions,

give us a call at...

...and leave a voice mail with your name and where you're from,

and we might use it on the show.

And if you'd rather e-mail, too bad.

-(laughter) -I was... recently hacked,

and now I'm being cyber-bullied by a neighborhood teen.

-(laughter) -So... I had to go off the grid.

LGR 486 Update! Unboxing & Installing Windows 3.0 - Duration: 20:02.

Greetings and welcome to an LGR thing! And this is Microsoft Windows 3.0, not 3.1

not yet anyway. I wanted to take a look at this for a couple of reasons: one, I've been

meaning to install Windows in some form on my 486 Woodgrain PC for a long time now and

while the eventual goal is to put 3.1 or maybe 3.11 on there... that's what I eventually

want to do, but it might be an interesting detour to stop at Windows 3. Which was actually

released 28 years ago on the exact day I'm filming this: May 22nd, 1990 -- is when this

was released to manufacturing not when I'm recording this video. Contrary to some conspiracies,

I am NOT a time traveler so just ignore those IBM 5100s and flux capacitors you've seen

in my videos. Anyway, I wanted to install this because you know, I'm not terribly familiar

with it. I've used it a few times here and there over the years but as a kid, my first

version of Windows was 3.1. And while there's not a drastic difference between the Windows

3 and 3.1, there kind of is. I mean there are a lot of applications that will only work

with 3.1, in fact way more that will work with 3.1 only, and do not support 3.0. And

then of course there's just some different graphical features and things like that that

this had, and then 3.1 got rid of or improved upon in many ways. And I don't know I just

find that this release is kind of fascinating. Plus, I have a brand new sealed package here,

check that out. This is the three and a half inch US release of Windows 3.00 and it was

sold apparently by Forsythe Computers Incorporated in Saint Louis, Missouri for 149 dollars at

one point. "New! Breaks the 640k memory barrier. Unleash all the power of your PC!"

Yeah I definitely want to do that since my 486 has 16 megabytes of RAM. You can see the

sticker here has a special bonus, "Comes with Daybook, a personal organizer with a

runtime version of ToolBook™ by Asymetrix." Don't know what that is yet, but we'll find

out. While I could admire this packaging all day I'm itching to get inside here and see

what we get. So let's do a bit of an unboxing before we get to setting everything up on

the 486. [slicing] Kind of wanna save that price sticker if I can. [plasticky noises]

Well, fell right off, that makes it easy. [more plastic noises] Mmm fresh retro Windows.

[cardboard being cardboard.] Man. So crispy, so enjoyable.

[drops things.] Aw ffff...

We'll just pretend that never fell out of there. Mm, yeah that is packed to the brim. [sniff!]

Mmf. Smells like a library. So there's that Asymetrix runtime ToolBox™ software construction

set for Windows. Got the gigantic Windows 3 user guide here, good grief. Got a product

registration card. Well it's less of a card and more of a substantial pamphlet. "Important

information read this first." No thanks. Okay I don't remember seeing this as a thing.

Well, it's not really a magazine. It's more like a, yeah, 12 page monthly publication.

So I guess the Cobb Group had their own Windows newsletter. Aha yes, here we go the Microsoft

Windows 3.0 hardware compatibility list, this is fascinating. The following computers, video

displays, printers, pointing devices, keyboards, and networks have been certified for use with

Microsoft 3.0," yes. Windows 3 can run on all these things. And pretty much this is

just effectively is a wish list for my collection these days, but a bunch of them, man. What

the heck happened to these things? Like what's what's the ALR Powerflex? That sounds like

an amazing computer. Or the Emerson ET200, didn't realize Emerson made computers. The

Goupil G5-SX? It has some Nokias in there, I've been trying to find like a Nokia, like,

MS-DOS computer just because it seems like that would be fun. Here's a very similar list

for all of the applications that Microsoft has tested to be working with Windows 3 or

have Windows 3-specific versions at this point in 1990. Of course, there were many more than

this that would work on Windows 3 but it's kind of neat to have a brand new operating

system at the time and they went out of their way to test so much stuff. Here's our proof

of license for Windows 3.00. Look how simple that is. Yeah these looked a little more simpler

than what happened with all the Microsoft license things later on -- the holograms and

all sorts of interesting print and security features. Not much going on there. And then

all this this is going to be the floppy disks. "Please, treat it as valuable property."

I will do that, Microsoft in 1990, I will do that. "Before opening this disk packet

I should carefully read all that crap." Let's go ahead and get this disk packet

open here before we take a look at the manual or anything like that. [slicing away.] Oh

man. Wow these look great. They feel great too, these are quality disks. Alright, so

yeah "for DOS systems," this is a full version of the thing you just Install this

on top of DOS. I have DOS 6.22 installed on the 486 so that is what we'll be upgrading

-- or really adding onto since Windows was more of a shell that ran on top of DOS at

this point and not a fully fledged operating system. So it does require DOS which is why

we're doing it in this order and subsequently we're going to be installing 3.1 on top of

this 3.0 installation in the future. I am curious about this, I'm absolutely not familiar

with this at all. So it looks like it comes with a personal organizer, a calendar, address

book, to-do list. But also this thing called ToolBook™ and that's what I'm more intrigued

by here. "With the full version of ToolBook™ You can easily create your own applications

without being a programmer." I've used Windows 3.0 before like, it's installed on my IBM

PS/2 Model 90 486 XP thing. This on the other hand, yeah, we'll install this once we get

Windows installed and see what it does. And finally [plop] just want to take a look at

this manual here really quick because it's so large, it demands an audience. Heh! That's

the most appropriate, it has 640 pages. 640k barrier broken, 640 page barrier broken for

this manual. Wow. Ohh. Just absurd documentation, could you imagine getting a book like this

with Windows 10? Or anything these days from Microsoft that's not like some enterprise

solution kind of IT corporate business software. Anyway! That's one delightful mountain of

documentation. All right. Well now I know what Windows 3 comes with so let's hook up

the woodgrain 486 and get this baby installed. All right got the 46 turned on some disks

at the ready. Here we go. And it just said to type setup on the A: drive. "Welcome

to the Microsoft Windows version 3.00 setup." We will install to "Windows." Look at

this very classic Windows installer they used for seemingly forever. Okay, so let's see

what it has detected: MS-DOS, VGA. We do have SVGA, we'll just go with VGA for now. Sounds

good. And now to sit through the process of installing eight flop--no, seven floppy disks.

These are all 720 kilobyte, not high-density just double sided double density disks. And

I'm not sure, okay what is it doing here? The heck is this? No clue what that did on

the first disk there, but we'll try it again. You really just never know with floppy disks,

hehe. Even ones that were new, wrapped up and stuff. Okay well, that's what it was supposed

to do and "after setup installs Windows it will perform each of the following, check

procedures: setup printers, applications already on hard disk." Nope. Nope. Nope. Because

I don't want to do any of that, I don't have a printer attached right now. Although I hope

to address that in the future. So yeah, it seems to be fine now, we went from disk 2

onto disk 3 so, I'll just continue from here and pick back up once it's done installing.

Hm, didn't even ask for disk 7 just went straight to this. Needs to modify config.sys and autoexec.bat,

"make all modifications for me." Yeah, go ahead. Reboot. I guess it's not gonna do

it for me, "Do it yourself," it says. Okay, let's see what it did. We have Windows

over there and we just type in "WIN." And it loaded so quickly we couldn't even

see the Windows 3.0 splash screen. What a shame, but I do still have that compact flash

storage device installed on here. So yeah, this is Windows 3.0. It is very much like

3.1 or 3.11 but a little simpler. The icons are different, a lot of the capabilities are

different as I mentioned earlier, but we'll see if we can add a little bit of color here.

Ha ha, fluorescent. Yes [chuckles] cuz why not? Oh, these color schemes are not great.

I remember pastel. I guess we're just gonna put it right back to where it was. We got

a bunch of fonts. Well, actually not a bunch. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 fonts. We can access our PORTS.

And our MOUSE. And our DESKTOP. I remember some of these patterns being kind of interesting.

Nope nope, they're pretty dumb. They're all monochrome. Okay, and I keep I keep wanting

to click this part to get the drop down. But you actually have to click the drop down,

just clicking this doesn't actually do anything here. So yeah, there's a lot of little things

about the UI that they tweaked for 3.1 that just make it way easier to use. Let's try

some wallpapers. Will it let me? Oh I have to tile them. There we go. Some of these are

pretty rad. I like chess. Always liked chess. That's like my favorite of the Windows 3 wallpapers.

I'll probably leave that but I'm just curious what else is in here. Paper? Yeah, whatever.

Party. Augh. I don't know man that might be even better, hahaha. The early 90s-ness of

that is beautiful Oh so is that, oh it's just great. I think I'm gonna leave that one for

now and then I had something magnificent over here, kind of like this. Oh my goodness yes!

This is Windows 3.0! [chuckles] Look at all this man. Oh I just want to drink from jazz

pattern Solo cups and go rollerskating and aw, man. Alright, so see we got some games

here. Solitaire, the classic. There's something about like how smooth everything feels yet

the frame rate isn't ridiculously high either, there's just something odd about it. It does

have all the same decks as 3.1 though. It looks like it is yep, still the same one by

Wes Cherry. So. And then Reversi was the other game that it came with, this was a classic

sort of a holdover really. And then they kind of took it out from 3.1, if I recall. Let's

see we got some accessories and we got Write. "I can write things with my Model M and

it's loud as ballllls." It's wonderful. We got Paint-friggin-brush. Oh, yes mmm, look

at that high DPI of my mouse, haha. This little Logitech mouse, it's a -- or maybe it's the

polling rate causing that but either way, it's a very limited kind of mouse situation

going on. We have the Terminal which was, ah man. I wish I had a phone line to actually

try this because I used to dial into all sorts of things like, you know bulletin board systems

and the local library and there was like this thing that the Yellow Pages had. I don't know,

all sorts of stuff if you had a phone line which I don't. I don't even have a modem installed

in this thing just cuz I don't really need it these days. Notepad! Yay It's Notepad.

Recorder, quite handy for recording macros if you ever need to do things with your various

programs, you know spreadsheets whatnot if they don't have macro support built-in. Cardfile!

[TYPING LOUDLY] Yeah in case you need to keep a bunch of cards filed. And we've got a

calendar to keep track of your calendar, set alarms for yourself. All these basic productivity

things that were really like a big selling point of Windows so you would be able to get

all of these kind of things just in one spot. You get a clock man, a clock! I Love that

digital clock. You've also got the PIF editor here, which is if you want to make shortcuts

and special, you know, requirements for memory and display usage and all the kinda stuff

for your DOS programs. Pretty darn handy, at least I found it so in -- especially in

Windows 95, but also in 3 and 3.1. File Manager looks -- it looks a little bit different too

from 3.1. So you have this and then just things open up this way and it's, I don't know, I

think it's kind of annoying. I don't like it. I know there's ways to customize it but

point being I'm not a big fan of file manager in Windows 3. You save your settings, sure

go ahead, I don't care. I did wanna try that piece of software that it came with though,

the Asymetrix runtime toolbox. Okay, so we'll run the "RUN" command and it is: TPKSETUP.EXE.

And install it to the toolbox folder. [brief disk drive noises] Well it did that. We'll

do "introducing tool book." Ooh. Tour book! An introduction to tool book. "In

this brief introduction, you'll see what it can do. Allow about ten minutes," well,

I don't know about that but. Yeah, what can it do? I just want to know what it can do.

"ToolBook is almost as powerful as your imagination. You can combine text, graphics,

animation, calculations, interactive--" is this HyperCard? Kind of looks like HyperCard.

"Create a book that uses stereo sound." Yeah this is pretty much looking like HyperCard

for the Mac. Not exactly what I thought it would be but that's interesting Yeah, check

it out there's an example of things you can do. So that's that part of it, let's try Daybook.

Alright, so we have the Daybook map. You can see a data flow diagram, okay. It's like an

organizer. That's fine. "This this is today. Dang it." And we can go to yeah, I got a

-- we can put a reminder here, nah we're gonna put a watch on this day and it's gonna remind

me to upload this video. "Upload this video," and the watch is on top of that but there

we go. Oh, no, we can't -- why can't I make the watch -- well. Screw this. Now, I would

try SimCity for Windows here, SimCity classic. But but this is one of those that will not

work on here because it needs Windows 3.1 or above. For all sorts of reasons, but you

know largely because of all the multimedia stuff. However, I believe that the Microsoft

Best of Entertainment Pack will work on here it says, yeah. MS-DOS version 3.1 or later

which this is 6.22. And Windows version 3.0 or later with a 286 or higher, 640k RAM. Yay.

Long as we can play SkiFree, Rodent's Revenge, Jezzball? It's not entirely useless. Oh, yeah.

That's what I like to see: all these games. SkiFree, yay! So, yeah, you can play SkiFree

in Windows 3, so that's pretty awesome. And you got Chip's Challenge without any sound,

hehe. That's -- it is what it is. Jezzball, good stuff, good stuff. Again it's all very

quiet though. That's unfortunate. And the reason for this silence is not because we

don't have a sound card in here, if you'll remember a while back we did another 486 upgrade

video where I installed a lovely Sound Blaster Pro 2.0 card. So this thing does have some

awesome sound, but all we get in Windows 3.0 here is occasional PC speaker beeping and

that's it. [doonk] Like that. Doonk! That's all you get. What is my cool name, uh cool

name is LGR. My cool quote is "Quotes are cool." But the reason that we don't have

sound here is simply because Windows 3 does not support it. In fact It didn't even get

support other than this really basic PC speaker warning beep until Windows 3.0a with Multimedia

Extensions. And as far as I know that wasn't actually sold in stores, it was just an upgrade

that was made available for certain vendors that were selling their MPC or Multimedia

PCs. But this doesn't have it. Which is kind of odd because on the front of this if you

look at the screen that is on that little IBM, what is that an 8513 monitor. It has

an article about MIDI, it shows a keyboard in Paintbrush, and there's a Program Manager

window open that says "Music and Computing." But this does not have music or sound support!

It's just... why were they doing that? They were like teasing something that just wasn't

even a thing yet. But anyway! This computer does have the ability to play back sound so

we'll do that eventually with the upgrade to Windows 3.1. But as it is now that's pretty

much it for this right here, just Windows 3. We'll see you in the next 486 upgrade video

at some point where we will be happily upgrading to Windows 3.1 and probably 3.11 for Workgroups.

But anyway, that was this video and I hope that you enjoyed what you saw here! And if

you did perhaps you'd like to check out some of my others. Of course there was the video

where I put this computer together in the first place, as well as the one where we put

the Sound Blaster Pro 2.0 card, and a bunch of other upgrades with more to come in the

future. And beyond that there are other videos every Monday and Friday here on LGR. And as

always, thank you very much for watching!

Angry Foreigner on Prayer Call in Sweden - Duration: 15:22.

Police and politicians decided Växjö will get prayer call. The local mosque will sing once a week.

The volume will be max 110 decibels, which is consert level. So it's not a little generous there!

("The new Sweden")

This has been a hot debate in Växjö the past months

And I figured we could address this by reading what reasonable muslims have to say.

Vice chairman of the Muslim federation in Ljungby says: "We don't want prayer call."

"It doesn't fit in Sweden. We're guests in this country and we don't want culture clashes."

"In Sweden christianity is dominant. It's not appropriate to call out for prayer."

"I'm a citizen of Sweden. I have to adjust to Swedish law."

"Comparing prayer call to church bells is invalid, because prayer call is messages being sent out. Big difference."

He's also concerned about the development in Sweden, and says: "I have relatives who died in the terror attacks in France. One of them was only 26 years old."

"Muslims in Sweden should address their own issues first."

I think this might be what he's referring to:

"The point, which you might be grasping, is that we're in Sweden only to spread islam."

"It doesn't have to take 20 years for Sweden to become a muslim country, and it could be. How many muslims were there in the beginning?"

Or if you wanna speak bluntly, consult this diversity engineer:

"Listen you Swedish whore, us Arabs are here to conquer your country, so get on your knees and suck my dick."

"- You Swedish little whore. - Allahu akbar! - Allahu akbar, you whore."

Isn't it great how secular muslims, who respect Swedish culture, totally get ignored by mainstream-media?

It's not often muslims who wanna decrease conflict get interviewed by SVT, while islamists repeatedly get called in to represent all muslims.

And this is just one of many puzzle pieces to my burning hatred for politicians and journalists. Because this is typical.

The establishment are so scared of being called racist, they refuse to differentiate muslims just to play it safe.

So they choose to listen to dumb muslims, over reasonable muslims.

They're so obsessed with tolerance, they wanna tolerate islamists. Because only islamists want prayer call.

It's not secular muslims who respect Sweden.

Some wanna claim prayer call is the same as church bells, but that's not the case.

Since church bells are Swedish. Islam isn't, and muslims know this.

Personally I'm not a fan of any noise, but let's be intellectually honest here.

On their facebook-page, Växjö mosque describe how jews are the enemy of God, and that it's wrong of Swedes to celebrate christmas.

They describe Swedes in highly degrading terms as "kuffar", which is a slur for non-muslims.

They also use books which are the official curriculum of Islamic upbringing in Saudi Arabia.

So it's hardly secular muslims who demanded this prayer call.

FMSF, not to be confused with Moderaterna, applied for the same thing as the islamists.

With the message: "Freedom is greatest - lower taxes!"

This is a prime example of how trolling can work as political activism.

Perfect method to prove a point, since it's the same thing: A political message.

In this article, which more should read, a former imam explains it's not about freedom of religion - but colonization.

If the sole purpose was call to prayer you could just have an app in your phone.

But it's not just about that, it's about establishing Islams power over the public space.

And I quote: "The call shows that the people of the city are muslim. It's about showing that Allah is the greatest, and everyone should submit to Islam."

And this becomes obvious when you look at the fact that a majority of Swedes don't want prayer call.

But the islamists in Växjö don't care about that, which speaks volumes on their low view of Swedes.

Which also applies to our politicians, neither the mosque nor the municipality bothered asking the neighbors.

Even though the max volume is at concert level. So now the neighbors have appealed, which they shouldn't have to, since they should've been asked to begin with.

But that's how little the politicians care what Swedes think. Instead they've allied with islamists.

And there's many examples of this, both from the left and right-wing.

So many I had to do an hour long video about it, with thorough research.

So click the grey box if you want, and prepare for a very informative video. No least on differences between islamists and muslims.

Let's not forget that time the Moderate Party put a Muslim Brotherhood representative in the defense department of parliament.

Islam doesn't have a church, but scholars that we must respect. They're knowledgeable and I can never tell them that they're wrong.

- So Islam only has one interpretation? - Yes, just one.

We don't shake hands with women.

You should be entitled to halal. And to work at publice service media wearing hijab.

Islam forbids sex outside of marriage.

Having sex with a boyfriend or girlfriend is totally forbidden.

If a woman approaches you and says: "I'm a muslim but I don't want to wear hijab. Is that right or wrong?"

And so you would tell her she's wrong?

Of course. It's like you'd tell me you're muslim and don't believe in Muhammed. Is that okay? No.

Men and women shouldn't dance with each other.

- That's a given in Islam? - Yes, we don't dance.

Some wanna argue prayer call is about religious freedom, but they don't understand the term.

Religious freedom is about my freedom to escape your religion. It's about you being allowed to believe whatever, so long as you don't push it on others.

Prayer call is the definition of pushing it on others. And if you can think outside your PC-cultural brainwash, you'll understand what I mean.

Imagine me starting a satanist church in Rinkeby, and demanding to play black metal through speakers

Five times a day, at concert volume. Nobody would be okay with that. So why do we let muslims behave that badly?

Talk about the racism of low expectations.

2014 something happened that people didn't take seriously enough.

A man who had worked late was awoken at 7:30 by a prayer call. Of course he got mad and vented on FB.

Among other things he wrote: "It's not normal to wake up to a donkey with stomach pains."

It ended with 200 muslims gathering outside his apartment, numerous people had knives.

They were there to hurt him and they made this clear to the police, since this man had insulted their religious ideas.

It all ended with the cops arresting the man for hate speech, while those who threatened him walked free.

This is what happens. Because it's not secular muslims who want prayer call.

It's people who think that religion should be above the state and the culture.

And some of them take it so seriously that a harmless diss is enough for them to wanna hurt you.

And the more our politicians suck up to islamists, the more we'll see this type of incidents.

The most important question when someone wants to discuss prayer call is this: Why are muslims more worth than non-muslims in Sweden?

Politicians use "equal human worth" to motivate special treatment, then they act surprised that people are so angry and everything is polarized.

You can't seperate ordinary muslims from islamists, and you think islamists deserve more respect than Swedes.

Don't be surprised when people get radicalized. I mean, even Skurt has become a nazi now.

Can you believe it? SKURT? It was actually Dagens Nyheter who revealed that Skurt has crossed over to the dark side.

Look at what you've done, Swedish politicians. See what you've done. To Skurt.

Point is, do you know how many migrants fled because of Islam? Their association to prayer call is when their relative got decapitated.

So it really says something about the SJW view of immigrants, when they think everyone wants prayer call.

Why should the opinions of radical muslims weigh heavier than atheists, christians or jews?

And don't think this is an isolated incident. Now Växjö's islamists want to see prayer calls all over Sweden.

Because this is how social precedents work. If you allow one mosque to do it, more will demand the same, with reference to the prior one.

And boundaries will become erased.

It starts with once a week and ends with 5 prayer calls a day, because that's how it works in muslim countries.

And if your reasoning is that we should respect their religion, it will be taken to it's extreme.

Because otherwise you have to be ready to say: "NO. I will NOT respect your religion anymore."

And what politician would say that, and stick by it, other than Jimmie Åkesson?

It's sad how the Sweden Democrats are the only party who've taken this seriously, and been consistent with it.

Wahhabism is the same ideology Bin Ladin had. When Qatar opened a wahhabist-mosque in Malmö, did the left protest?

No, it was SD. And they were the only party who voted against.

Salafism is the version of Islam that dominates Saudi Arabia. The Social Democrats gave these extremists permission to build a mosque in Karlstad.

And said that it "FELT GOOD". That's a direct quote: "It feels good."

And they say this despite loud protests, and clarification, that it's about salafists.

But they don't care. And the only ones who tried stopping this was SD and ordinary muslims.

Because the truth is that Swedish nationalists and secular muslims have a lot in common.

Both respect Swedish culture and both don't want extremists.

While the Social Democrats and Green Party feel proud of their contribution to the islamization.

But that might not be weird since the Social Democrats are working with the Muslim Brotherhood.

All my sources are linked in the video description, so look them up after the video.

Because you shouldn't take anyone's word on anything. Think critically, idolize no-one.

There's also interesting details there which I don't have time to address in the video, so read the articles.

For example this: Children in ghettos are exposed to islamist propaganda both on computer and rec centers.

While the left keeps nagging about how we need more rec centers.

The school is afraid to touch on this, social services are hesitant, and imams encourage it with their silence.

It's so bad that feminists are leaving the ghettos, because of muslim radicals.

The lefts betrayal of women is total and perverse. You say you aren't for sale, but you are. You sold out to islamists.

A report from the department of social protection concluded that the Muslim Brotherhood has been active in Sweden since the 70's.

And has grown thanks to secular support from the left.

Then they wonder why immigrants vote for SD. Many immigrants fled here precisely because radical muslims ruined their countries.

So it's not weird. Seriously, if you're a muslim then SD is the best party for you.

Because all other parties will ally with extremists who wanna decapitate you because you aren't radical enough.

When mainstream-media finally started reporting on sharia-police in the ghettos, the Left Party blamed the issue on privatizations.

Islamic moral police have nothing to do with Islam, huh?

And I know exactly what dumb, cowardly lefties will argue: "But all muslims aren't like that!"

No, and all Swedes aren't nazis. But that hardly kept you from taking a stance there.

The Left took the fight against sexism, homophobia and oppression and handed it over to SD.

Then they get surprised when the working class see the Left for what it is, and vote for SD. That's idiocy for ya.

The unholy alliance of the left and islamists isn't that weird, since they have the same main enemies.

America, Jews and the West in general. But the sad part is that the Left hasn't learned from their own history.

When the left allied with islamists in Iran in the 70s, it ended with the islamists betraying them and enforcing a religious dictatorship.

And today women are forced to wear hijab. This isn't a tradition for Iran, if that's what you think.

In the 60's Iran looked like any other Western country. It's possible for countries to evolve backwards, and that's what's happening in Sweden.

Once upon a time the Left fought for women's rights, but now they fight to undermine women's safety and jeopardize their future rights.

But we can counter-act this, and it's so simple. Just raise your voice. Speak up.

Write your politicians and explain why you're not gonna vote for them anymore.

And every time you see a journalist legitimizing islamists, write them and criticize them for it.

HARD. Accuse them of the racism of low expectations.

And STOP voting for the parties that lead this development. Both the right and the social democrats are responsible for this.

A former politician whose been active in the Green Party since the 90's had this to say:

"Salafist imams and their organisations yearly pull in millions that is used to isolate muslim immigrants."

"Their representatives in the Green Party have made sure that these organisations, that they personally participate in or even create in some cases,"

"get tax money from the government. Muslim votes are bought up by certain clan-leaders and imams."

"And in exchange for the islamists conducting their business, the Green Party has gotten more votes."

"Without these votes from the ghettos the Green Party would fall out of Parliament next year."

And that's probably the answer to why Swedish politicians are doing this, because this isn't just applicable to the Green Party.

The strongest voting holds for the Social Democrats are ghettos. No go zones are socialist areas.

Pizza in a Bag | Review and GIVEAWAY! - Duration: 9:33.

Sometimes you just want food in a bag. Am I right? This week, I'm doing a review

of this stuff. It's Pizza in a Bag, and I'm also doing a giveaway,

starting now. Hey, guys. Welcome to a A.D. Keto. My name is Aaron. This is the

channel where you can watch a weird dad work his way through the ketogenic diet.

I do some keto eating vlogs, I do some keto product reviews, and I do some keto

giveaways! If this is your first time here, please consider subscribing, and if

you do, make sure you're on notification squad by clicking the bell. So guys, I got

an email a couple weeks ago from the team at Super Snack Time, and they said,

"Hey, we've got a product we would like you to check out. It's called Pizza in a Bag."

and I said, "Sure, send it over!" And little did I know that Super Snack Time is the

company started by the people from Epic Meal Time. Epic Meal Time is something...

it's a youtube channel that I was previously blind to. I don't know how I

had missed it. They have about 7 million followers. And they do all kinds of crazy,

high-calorie eating videos over there, some of which are keto, but all of them

incredibly entertaining. Do check them out. I'll leave a link right up there. So

they sent me this stuff. It's Pizza in a Bag. There's Buffalo flavor,

Pepperoni flavor, and Supreme flavor. It is pepperoni jerky, and when they got in

touch with me, I said, "Hey, you know is there any sort of a... little anything I

could give my viewers?" and they said, "Sure, you know what? We will totally hook you

up with a giveaway." So that's coming up. Stay tuned to the end of the video, and I'll

tell you about that. Right now, I'm going to sample and taste test each one of

these, and let you know what I think. Which one should I start with? I'm

probably gonna start with the pepperoni. Pepperoni flavor.

So before I dig in, let me just read you the nutrition information. there are two

servings per container, 10 grams of fat, two carbs, five grams of protein. Lemme

just read you what's on the back, here. It says, "Hi there. This is Epic Meal Time

speaking. If you're one of our millions of fans, well, we're glad to see you

again. If not, we're pleased to meet you. We make online videos about crazy food,

and now we're bringing our best eats to you with Super Snack Time. Super Snack

Time is proud to present the most original twist on bagged meat ever. All

of the cheesy and saucy zip of pepperoni pizza, loaded into thick delicious pieces

of pepperoni jerky. It's unlike anything you've ever had before.

Do us a favor. Stop reading and start eating. You're welcome." So I'm gonna dig

into the pepperoni flavor, here. See what this is all about. Can he open the bag...?

Can he? I've got problems. There we go. So pepperoni jerky. Look at the size of

that! It's bigger than I thought it would be. Wow, that's a big old piece of

pepperoni jerky. Now I may have butchered the bag. I'm not sure if these are

resealable bags. I don't think they are. So if you don't eat the whole thing,

you've probably got to find... bring a ziploc bag, or whatever, which I'll do. Taking a road

trip today. Gonna bring these. I'll load up the rest of these in a Ziploc. Anyway,

there it is. That's a big old piece of jerky.

It's pretty good.

It tastes pretty sweet. Oh!

A little kick to it. All right, let me read you the ingredients, here. Pepperoni. And

then in parentheses, they have a whole bunch stuff about the pepperoni: pork,

salt (contains 2% or less of beef, dextrose, flavorings, lactic acid, lactic

acid starter culture, oleoresin of paprika -- I can taste the paprika, for sure --

sodium nitrate, spices, vitamin C, BHA, BHT, citric acid). So that's what's in the

pepperoni. Then there's tomato sauce, which is: fresh vine-ripened tomatoes, sea

salt, onion powder, garlic powder, natural flavors, spices, and citric acid. Then

there's brown sugar, honey, Parmesan cheese,

cellulose powder to prevent caking, potassium sorbate,

garlic, sea salt, onion, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, Cayenne, parsley, ground

pepper, thyme, and rosemary. So there's a lot of stuff in here. A couple of those

ingredients give me pause -- you know, the brown sugar, the honey. Not ideal for keto

folk, but I mean, 2 grams of carbs is not too terrible. This whole package would be

4 carbs. I'm gonna try one more of these.

Okay.

There's a real sweetness, followed by a kick of those spices, for sure. Next I'm

gonna dig into the Buffalo style, and there's my little... I did it correctly! Yay!

Opened without incident. Again, not as a flexible bag -- not a resealable bag. Let me

see if this is any different. Again, Two grams of carbs, four grams of protein,

nine grams of fat. 100 calories. Servings per container - 2. So let's try one of

these. This is the Buffalo...buffalo style.

Uh-huh. Again,

there's a pretty big kick on the Buffalo. My first reaction to this one, again, is

"Wow, that's sweet." But then there's also that a big spicy kick after the fact.

Ingredients are very similar. In fact, I think almost identical. I'm seeing the

brown sugar, the honey. Butter buds , which contain maltodextrin. Some of those

ingredients -- not... not the best. However, let's take a look at this guy. This is

Supreme Pizza. Again, there's my little tab along there. Look how nice that came

apart. Did it! Spoke too soon. All right, here we go. So this is Supreme.

And again, these are big, big pieces of jerky.

Mm-hmm.

It tastes like a supreme pizza. It's got a nice... like, tomatoey, cheesy flavor to it.

This guy is hundred calories, 8 grams of fat, 2 carbs, 2 grams of sugar, 4 protein.

Beef jerky, which is beef, soy sauce, water, wheat, soy beans, and salt water. Brown

sugar, garlic, hickory smoke, which is water, hickory smoke concentrate,

Worcestershire sauce, which is water, high-fructose corn syrup,

distilled vinegar, Worcestershire sauce base, which is distilled vinegar, molasses,

corn syrup, water, salt, caramel color, garlic powder, sugar, spices, tamarin,

natural flavor, sulfating agent, salt, citric acid, lemon juice, which is water,

lemon concentrate, 1/10 of 1% of sodium benzoate, black pepper, garlic, mushrooms,

sea salt, onion, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, cayenne, parsley, ground pepper,

thyme, and rosemary. Holy cow. A lot of stuff in here. So you know, this is a

snack that could do in a pinch. I'm not sure that I would seek this

stuff out. I know that it's in Walmart. I'm not really there a whole lot, but

this could very well do in a pinch for someone. Who am I to say? This could

really be someone's favorite thing in the world. But a lot of those ingredients

are a little concerning. At any rate, these guys were super-nice to send this

stuff to me, and they do have a giveaway. So the giveaway's basically this: they're

gonna send someone this stuff. It's a nylon bag with one of each of these

flavors, and some stickers. The stickers say "Food is always epic". So here's some

tantalizing pictures of the stuff in the giveaway. I'll do it... I figure it's the same as

I do my other giveaways. Everyone that leaves a comment below this video is

entered. Today is June 1st. Friday. Let's say that next Saturday, June 9th, I'll

pull a random winner, and the guys at Super Snack Time have said that they

will send it directly to that person. So I will collect your information and send

it off to them, and they will send you one of each of these bags of things. So

that's my review of Pizza in a Bag. I'm not super-wowed by it. I'm not super-disgusted by

it. I feel like this is really good... sort of roadtrip food, which will work for me

today. I'm actually taking a road trip. Gonna bring some of this stuff.

So that's gonna wrap it up for this video, guys. Hope you enjoyed it. Hope you

have a fantastic day, and I will see you next time.

So that's my review of pizza in a bag...

May Wrap Up! - Duration: 9:04.

Hello everyone!

I am Ashleigh, and today I'm going to be doing my May wrap up.

I managed to read five books in May, and I'm pretty sure you all know how these videos

work by now so I'm just going to jump right in.

The first book I read was Skylarks by Karen Gregory.

This book was sent to me by Bloomsbury as part of an Instagram tour, but I decided to

pick it up at the start of May because I was just really wanting something more light-hearted

than my usual reads.

This one is a romance between two girls, and it kind of has a focus on social class and

poverty as well.

When I first started this, I didn't think I'd get along with it, because the focus on

poverty is there a bit too much.

In the beginning, it does treat every single line as an opportunity to get the point across

that being poor is hard.

And it just started to get a little bit too much because it literally was every single

line, every page.

If the opportunity wasn't there, some really strenuous link would be pulled on to bring

it into the conversation, and it just didn't seem natural to me.

So it did start wearing on me a little bit.

But it did kind of fit into the story a lot better the further on you went.

But then later in the book when things started to turn a lot more political, that ended up

being my favourite side of it because it's not something you read about a lot on young

adult books and somehow, in a lot of YA, there are teenagers that don't worry about money

and just can miraculously afford and have everything they need.

So it's nice to see a book like this where that isn't the case.

The family and friends in this felt authentic.

And it was nice to see a gay romance that wasn't the problem of the story.

It was generally accepted in this for the most part, so that was a nice side of contemporary

that you don't usually see.

I did have a realisation when reading this though, that the main reason I don't get along

with contemporary as much as I do with other genres is because I worry a lot, and with

contemporary, whatever the characters are worrying about, it tends to end up reflecting

on me and I start worrying about similar things.

So my general reading experience of contemporary books doesn't tend to go very well because

it makes me feel bad.

Which quite a strange realisation, but it was reading this book that made me think that

and probably reflects on my rating so I just thought I would mention it.

And I rated this book 3 out of 5 stars.

I then picked up Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier.

I finally read it, woo!

This one is about a woman who marries a man, and when she tries moving into the household,

she really struggles to fit in because he had a wife who previously died, and everybody

apparently loved this wife.

She is the one that's called Rebecca.

And so her trying to fit into the household and kind of taking on the same role, she really

struggles with.

Daphne du Maurier's writing is so descriptive and lovely to read, I was kind of a little

bit blown away, because she would spend paragraphs describing flowers and things - which would

normally bore me - but in this one it didn't become boring at all.

But what I was most happy about when reading this is that it turned a lot darker than I

was expecting.

Now I don't know whether I'm just more paranoid than the main character in this, but whenever

one of the problems was another character creating a problem on purpose, I saw that

coming.

So I don't know whether I just mistrust everybody and thought the worst of them all, but in

this, the main character was surprised whereas I wasn't for a lot of the time.

However, there is a dark twist to it which I didn't see coming and probably should have

done, but I didn't.

And it just turned the story a lot darker than I was expecting and I absolutely loved

it.

I'm so glad that there's more to this story than just the paranoia and miscommunication

between the two main characters, because halfway through that started to get a bit repetitive

and it started annoying me that they just weren't talking.

It's so annoying when the main problem comes from miscommunication.

Just talk to each other, for gods sake!

But yes, I'm glad for that darker twist that added more to the story.

I do think I built this up a bit too much for myself after waiting to read it for so

long because I did kind of expect it to become a new favourite book of mine but it didn't

quite get there.

But it was still a really good book and I really enjoyed it, so I rated it 4 out of

5 stars.

I then picked up Scythe by Neal Shusterman, which was sent to me by Walker Books.

This follows Citra and Rowan who are taken away to become apprentice scythes.

A scythe in this world is a professional killer, because in this world death has been beaten.

Everybody is naturally immortal.

However the population still needs to have some level of control, and that's where the

scythes come in.

It was definitely the world that held my intrigue in this, because apparently they have all

the knowledge.

There's nothing more to be learned, and because of that, they knew how to create a sort of

utopian society where everybody was equal, no government was needed, and death was beaten.

However, as you might expect, some people still want to try and create power imbalances

where they have more power, so the political side of things I found particularly interesting,

to see how on the surface it looks like everybody's equal but really nobody's equal still.

However, I did have some problems with this.

First of all, I was really hoping that no romance would happen...but it did, and it's

just so disappointing when it's not necessary, and it doesn't add anything to the story.

It just makes my heart sink a little bit because it's not needed in every single book.

Two, I was really uncomfortable with how suicide is represented in this because accidents do

still happen in this world, but if you die from it then you are regenerated a few days

later.

So because of that, you saw characters do what we would class as suicidal acts but treating

it as a game because they would just wake up a few days later.

You also find out at some point that the scythes are the only people who are "allowed" to commit

suicide and actually die from it, so it that sense it was treated like a privilege.

And I just really found it uncomfortable to read about suicide as either a game or a privilege,

especially because both scenarios were either unnecessary or could've been avoided.

Especially the thing about it being a game.

That - none of those scenes added anything to the story, so I don't understand why it

was there.

And as well as that, there were two people who were explicitly described as being overweight,

and both of them were treated appallingly in terms of description.

I'm talking literally being compared to planets.

And it sounds like I'm nitpicking, but those two characters were described awfully, and

it was so obvious to me that it was horrible that I didn't like it.

But other than those problematic elements, I did find it a quick read.

It was quite an entertaining plot.

And so I rated it 3 out of 5 stars.

The next book I read was actually a pretty random reread for me.

It was The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.

I read this when I was really young, probably about 10 or something, and I don't know how

I got hold of it because it's really not the story you would give to someone that young.

It's about a 14 year old girl who is murdered and...it involves rape so if you're interested

in this book, e careful of that if you're triggered by anything like that.

And it kind of just follows her watching her friends and family from heaven.

It's quite an interesting take on the idea, because you're reading it through her eyes,

and you get to read some of the other characters' thoughts, which obviously she shouldn't know,

but because she's in heaven, you don't really know how this world works.

But it does give it quite a disjointed feeling when it's paired with her memories, the flashbacks,

what she's thinking at the moment - it's a very disjointed story, but it does make sense

while you're reading it.

As you might expect, it is very intense on the sadness and grief side of things, so I

definitely wouldn't recommend this to anybody who has recently lost someone.

But for me, that did give it quite a high rating because it's really hard to write grief

well, I feel like.

And the author just did it particularly well, I thought.

So I rated this one 4 out of 5 stars.

And then the final book that I read this month was The Ancient Guide to Modern Life by Natalie

Haynes.

This is a nonfiction about ancient Greek and Rome, and it kind of compares it to modern

day life, because a lot of people think we have become so much advanced from ancient

civilisations, but actually we have a lot more in common with them than you might imagine,

so this book kind of talks about that.

I found this book fascinating.

It covers so many topics like politics, economics, theatre and entertainment, women, philosophy,

lots of different things like that.

There were a couple of chapters where I weren't as interested, as you might expect, but for

the most part I did just find it fascinating and I sped through this book.

And I got along with Natalie Haynes' writing SO well.

She has the general storytelling, she has anecdotes about her own past.

It's not too academic.

She doesn't just expect you to understand the references she's talking about and she

describes them in a way that's not patronising.

She also has a sense of sarcasm that I'm pretty sure we could all relate to.

This is probably the nonfiction book on my shelves that I've enjoyed the most out of

any of them.

And I rated this 4.5 out of 5 stars.

So those were all the books that I read this month!

Let me know if you've read any of them and what your thoughts on them were.

And let me know what your favourite book of May was.

Other than that, I hope you're having a lovely day, and I shall see you next time with a

new video.

Bye!
