Only one place to start this morning and that's Russia.

As far as World Cup upsets come... they don't get much bigger than what we witnessed on

Wednesday.

In a truly remarkable match,...

South Korea beat the reigning World Cup champions Germany two-nil in their final Group F game.

Despite the stunning win, South Korea are out,... but the squad will come home to a

proud nation with their heads held high.

Our man following the World Cup for us,... Lee Seung-jae,... has the details.

The 13th day of the 2018 World Cup was anything but unlucky for South Korea as they produced

one of the biggest World Cup upsets EVER in Kazan.

The Taeguk Warriors, without their captain Ki Sung-yueng ,... played by far their best

game of this year's World Cup,... keeping the Germans at bay for the duration of the

match's 90-plus minutes.

However,... it was in the third minute of stoppage time that world football shook.

South Korea's Kim Young-gwon slotted home a close-range shot that was initially called

off-side,... but upon closer inspection by the video referee,... Kim was deemed onside

and the goal was awarded to South Korea.

The goal sparked desperate scenes from Germany, as they realized they were heading toward

first-round elimination for the first time since 1938, with goalkeeper Manuel Neuer going

on the offense, leaving a gaping hole for Son Heung-min to slot home an easy second

goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

Despite the historic win, South Korea will be leaving Russia along with Germany,... but

it's the Germans that finish rock bottom of Group F.

However, the win was bittersweet as the two-nil victory might have been enough for South Korea

to progress had it not been for a surprise three-nil victory by Sweden over Mexico.

The result means Sweden and Mexico are the Group F teams that qualify for the last 16.

South Korea might be out,... but a new star has been born.

Goalkeeper Jo Hyun-woo,... nicknamed Dae-Gea,.. a reference to his club team Daegu FC,.. and

a comparison to star Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea,... made some of the most impressive

saves of the World Cup so far,... including six against Germany.

Jo's heroics between the goalposts have brought him to the attention of several European teams.

Amid a flurry of consultations between the two Koreas,…

South Korea's unification minister has added his two cents on the current situation.

He says the two sides should prepare to "immediately" start economic cooperation,… saying Seoul

hopes to reopen the jointly run Kaesong complex "at the earliest possible time"

Economic sanctions on North Korea will remain in place until it denuclearizes completely,...

says Cho Myoung-gyon , Minister of South Korea's Unification Ministry.

"The international community wants to keep the sanctions on North Korea until its complete

denuclearization.

And the South Korean government supports that stance."

Although concrete actions for economic cooperation are limited under the sanctions,... the minister

said the inter-Korean discussions will continue,... and that the two Koreas will push for economic

activity, within the boundaries of the sanctions, including reopening the Kaesong Industrial

Complex.

The remarks came during the 2018 Korea Global Forum that was held at the Shilla Hotel in

central Seoul on Wednesday.

At the forum, hosted by the Ministry of Unification and jointly organized by the Institute for

Far Eastern Studies of Kyungnam University and the University of North Korean Studies,...

experts exchanged views on current situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Experts attributed the recent thaw in relations to active summit-diplomacy,... and the unorthodox

style of the leaders involved in the talks, who know how to leave the past in the past.

"The reason why, this time, we have seen a kind of a possible game-change of the situation

is that we have very unconventional leaders of the United States and also the very unconventional

leader of North Korea,... as well as your President(Moon Jae-in).

I think they are not so constrained by the so-called trust issue, but rather have a broad

picture to think out of the box."

They also say that it's partly due to the North Korean regime's strategy shift,... to

focusing on rebuilding its socialist economy.

"Kim Jong-un made a strategic decision.

That he would work on economic development.

He would improve the lives of his people.

And what's basic to that is normalizing relations with the United States and with the Republic

of Korea.

And doing that, it will permit North Korea to get the financial interaction."

"There is positivity about the recent developments on the Korean Peninsula.

And to keep up the momentum,... experts say that countries need to move on from the past.

But at the same time, they say it's important to have realistic expectations about future

dialogue with the North.

Defense chiefs of S. Korea and U.S. to meet Thursday in Seoul to discuss military cooperation - Duration: 0:47.

Continuing his trip to Northeast Asia,...

U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis will be visiting South Korea this afternoon,...

for talks with his Seoul counterpart Song Young-moo.

According to South Korea's defense ministry,... the two defense chiefs are slated to discuss

ways to implement agreements made during the summits between Seoul and Pyongyang,... and

between Pyongyang and Washington.

The two military leaders are also expected to talk about the transfer of wartime operational

control to South Korea.

Currently the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command, or CFC,... has wartime operation control,...

and discussions are ongoing about transferring command to South Korea's Joint Chief of Staff.

North Korea understands scope of denuclearization required by U.S.: Pompeo - Duration: 0:52.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has stated that contacts with North Korea are ongoing,...

with him in the lead of the communication.

However,... during testimony to the Senate Appropriations Committee on Wednesday, Pompeo

refused to give any details.

He said he was not prepared to talk about the details of internal discussions taking

place with Pyongyang, calling it inappropriate and counterproductive,... before adding that

the North Koreans would be (quote) "watching this hearing."

The top U.S. diplomat said he was sure the regime knew the scope of denuclearization

the Trump administration is calling for.

Pompeo also confirmed that no remains of U.S. soldiers killed during the Korean War have

been handed over by the North, but is optimistic they will be "in the not too distant future."

Inter-Korean talks on highway connection, modernization to be held at Panmunjom - Duration: 1:45.

Shifting focus to inter-Korean relations…

Today,… the two sides are sitting down for yet another round of talks on connecting and

modernizing roads between Seoul and Pyongyang.

For more, we connect to our Oh Jung-hee who is on the line for us.

Jung-hee tell us more.

Semin, we're expecting the talks to have just started.

Today's meeting was scheduled to begin a few minutes ago at 10AM Korea time,... at the

Tongil-gak building, located on the North Korean side of the border village of Panmunjom.

South Korea has sent a three-member delegation led by Vice Minister for Transport, Kim Jeong-ryeol

. And North Korea also has a three-member delegation,

led by its vice minister for environmental protection, Pak Ho-yong .

The South Korean delegation left for the talks early this morning,... have a listen at what

they had to say:

"We'll sincerely take part in today's talks for connecting and modernizing roads.

I believe there will be discussions on linking South Korea's Munsan with North Korea's Kaesong

-- something we originally agreed upon ten years ago."

The two Koreas worked on building a highway between Munsan and Kaesong in 2015, but it

came to a halt after North Korea's fourth nuclear test in early 2016.

If Munsan and Kaesong are linked,... then the capitals, Seoul and Pyongyang, will be

connected by highway.

But, just like Tuesday's talks on railways, it's difficult to expect any specific plans,

because bringing South Korea's resources and equipment into North Korea for these projects

could violate international sanctions.

So it's expected that the two sides will first agree on forming a joint investigation team

and checking the status of roads in North Korea.
