Waching daily Jul 28 2018

That's my third win.

3.

3 things…

Let me say—

That's not it...

Have I been saying this the whole summer?

Usually I...

1st win… And 2nd win…

3rd win!

As I said in the press conference, sorry to everyone here for having a boring match tonight.

Sorry for the boring match.

It was good?

It was good? You guys think so?

Thank you.

In all of Japan, Hamamatsu is my favorite town.

But of course, when I go to next town, I may say the same thing.

Sorry about that!

And today…

Your cheers...

Thank you all very much!

I'm thinking of what I should say...

I said it will be boring, but it turned out to be a good match.

But I don't think that's praise for me.

If the fans liked it, that means YOSHI-HASHI was close, and I don't want that to be the case.

I'm not comfortable with that.

About YOSHI-HASHI… I have nothing to say.

It's not enough to be satisfied with just having a good match.

Nothing else to say about YOSHI-HASHI.

Me? I have to win the rest of G1.

I've lost too many already

It's not just 2 losses.

For me Kazuchika Okada, 2 losses are more losses than I can imagine.

I won't be embarrassed by losing in G1, or anywhere in New Japan, for that matter.

Anyway, I now have my third win.

I can't even ask what 1+1 is here, anymore.

The answer is 3… It's 3…

What is 1+1?

Trump thanks Kim as North Korea hands over Korean War remains - Duration: 2:11.

We start with the latest developments between North Korea and the United States.

Pyongyang on Friday handed over 55 cases containing the remains of American troops killed in the

Korean War.

Kim Hyesung reports on the response by the U.S., and what this could hopefully lead to.

"I want to thank Chairman Kim in front of the media for fulfilling a promise that he

made to me, and I'm sure that he will continue to fulfill that promise as they search and

search and search."

That's what U.S. president Donald Trump said at the White House Friday local time.

North Korea transferred 55 cases carrying the remains of US.

soldiers killed in the Korean War,...marking the first step in implementing an agreement

reached at the North Korea-U.S. summit in June.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted that he is pleased with the North Korean leader's

decision to follow through on that commitment.

Defense Secretary James Mattis also welcomed the news, saying the North Korean gesture

indicates the relationship between Pyongyang and Washington is thawing and that negotiations

are underway to have U.S. teams head to North Korea to search for more fallen U.S. service

members' remains.

According to a White House Statement, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence will travel to Hawaii

on August 1st to participate in the Honorable Carry Ceremony and receive the remains as

they return to American soil.

As the son of a Korean War combat veteran, Pence added that he is deeply humbled to be

part of the historic moment.

More than 35 thousand Americans were killed during the Korean war, with 77-hundred of

those U.S. troops still listed as 'missing in action', most of them in North Korea.

The transfer of the remains coincided with the 65th anniversary of the 1953 armistice

agreement...and has been hailed by the White House as helping the momentum for positive

change.

All eyes are on the next steps... and on whether this momentum could lead to a formal declaration

to end the Korea War and to more progress toward North Korea's denuclearization.

The National for Friday July 27, 2018 - Doug Ford, Danforth Shooting, Wildfires - Duration: 47:39.

>> Andrew: ON THIS FRIDAY NIGHT,

DOUG FORD DROPS A BOMB ON

TORONTO POLITICS AND LEAVES THE

MAYOR FUMING.

HIS SUDDEN DECISION TO SLASH

TORONTO CITY COUNCIL ALMOST IN

HALF THREE MONTHS BEFORE VOTING

DAY IS THE LATEST CONTROVERSIAL

MOVE FROM THE NEW PREMIER.

HOW MUCH HAS ONTARIO CHANGED IN

JUST 28 SHORT DAYS?

ALSO TONIGHT, THE EXPLOSIVE

CALIFORNIA WILDFIRE TAKING DOWN

EVERYTHING IN ITS PATH AND THE

CHAOTIC RUSH TO GET TENS OF

THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE OUT OF

HARM'S WAY.

PLUS, HE SAW HIS GIRLFRIEND

GUNNED DOWN, THEIR LIVES CHANGED

FOREVER.

TONIGHT WE GO BACK TO THE

DANFORTH.

THIS IS "THE NATIONAL".

>> Andrew: ONTARIO'S NEW PREMIER

WAS ONCE A SINGLE TERM CITY

COUNCILLOR IN TORONTO AND TODAY,

DOUG FORD MADE IT VERY CLEAR

WHAT HE THINKS OF HIS FORMER

COLLEAGUES.

>> PEOPLE ARE TIRED OF WATCHING

CITY HALL, IT'S LIKE A COMEDY

SHOW DOWN AT CITY HALL, THEY GO

AROUND AND AROUND, NOTHING GETS

DONE.

>> Andrew: FORD'S PLAN TO CHANGE

THAT, CUT DOWN THE NUMBER OF

COUNCILLORS.

THE RANKS WERE ACTUALLY DUE TO

GROW FROM 44 TO 47.

INSTEAD THEY'LL DROP BY ALMOST

HALF, TO 25.

THAT'S 20 ODD SEATS GONE.

THEIR WARD BOUNDARIES OVERHAULED

TO ALIGN WITH FEDERAL RIDINGS.

DOWNTOWN CORE COULD SEE THE MOST

CHANGE.

THINK ABOUT IT, COME ELECTION

TIME, ALMOST EVERY SITTING

COUNCILLOR WILL HAVE TO DUKE IT

OUT WITH OTHER INCUMBENT

COUNCILLORS.

FORD SAYS IT'S ABOUT SAVING

MONEY.

$25 MILLION OVER FOUR YEARS, BUT

IT'S HOW HE'S GOING ABOUT IT

THAT MAY BE THE BIGGEST ISSUE.

HIS APPROACH HAS TICKED A NUMBER

OF PEOPLE OFF.

>> Reporter: WHEN DOUG FORD WAS

A TORONTO CITY COUNCILLOR HE AND

HIS BROTHER MAYOR ROB FORD WAGED

A PITCHED BATTLE AGAINST MOST OF

THE CITY'S ELECTED

REPRESENTATIVES.

ROB FORD'S CRACK SMOKING SCANDAL

LET LED HIM TO BE STRIPPED OF

MAYOR POWER.

TODAY AS PREMIER FORD IS FORCING

THE ISSUE.

IT IS THE MOST DYSFUNCTIONAL

POLITICAL ARENA IN THE COUNTRY,

CITY HALL.

THE REASON IT'S SO

DYSFUNCTIONAL, WE HAVE 44

PEOPLE.

TRYING TO MAKE A DECISION.

>> Reporter: DOUG FORD HIMSELF

RAN FOR MAYOR OF TORONTO AND

LOST IN 2014.

THE MAN WHO BEAT HIM, MAYOR JOHN

TORY IS FURIOUS AT FORD'S

SURPRISE ANNOUNCEMENT.

>> WHAT WE DON'T NEED AND WHAT I

JUST CAN'T SUPPORT IS CHANGE

BEING RAMMED DOWN OUR THROATS

WITHOUT A SINGLE SECOND OF

PUBLIC CONSULTATION.

AND ON TOP OF THAT, DONE IN THE

MIDDLE OF THE ELECTION PERIOD

ITSELF.

>> Reporter: THAT MUNICIPAL

ELECTION IS IN JUST THREE

MONTHS, LEAVING INCUMBENTS AND

HUNDREDS OF CANDIDATES UNSURE OF

WHERE OR IF THEY'LL BE RUNNING.

THE MOVE RAISED QUESTIONS.

>> IT SMACKS WHEN YOU TRY TO

METAL IN THE AFFAIRS -- MEDDLE

IN THE AFFAIRS OF SOMEONE WHO

DEFEATED YOU AND THAT'S WHAT IS

HAPPENING WITH JOHN TORY AND I'M

SURE HE'S QUITE PUT OUT.

IT DOESN'T -- IT'S NOT HARD TO

DECIPHER THE FUTURE RELATIONS OF

THE CITY HALL OF TORONTO AND

FORD GOVERNMENT.

>> Reporter: THE N.D.P. LEADER

QUESTIONED HIS MOTIVES AS WELL.

>> HE'S TAKING VENGEANCE, HE'S

BEHAVING IN A MEAN SPIRITED AWAY

AND HIS BULLYING APPROACH TO

POLITICS IS OWEDIOUS.

>> Reporter: PROTESTERS SHOWED

UP TONIGHT OUTSIDE TORONTO CITY

HALL, WHILE INSIDE THE COUNCIL

MEETING DESCENDED INTO ANGER.

>> WHO KNEW ABOUT THIS IN

ADVANCE?

BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED

THAT SOMEBODY KNEW ABOUT THIS IN

ADVANCE AND DIDN'T BRING IT TO

OUR ATTENTION.

>> APOLOGIZE TO ME AND THIS

CHAMBER FOR GETTING UP IN THAT,

THAT WAY WHERE YOU'RE IMPLYING

IT, BUT NOT SAYING IT.

GET UP IF YOU HAVE THE BALLS TO

DO IT AND SAY IT.

>> Reporter: THE MAYOR SAYS HE'S

CONSIDERING THE CITY'S OPTIONS.

EVERYTHING FROM A REFERENDUM TO

A COURT CHALLENGE.

RON CHARLES, CBC NEWS, TORONTO.

>> Andrew: THIS MADE WAVES

BEYOND JUST TORONTO.

CALGARY'S MAYOR, NOT ONE TO HOLD

BACK, WAS CRITICAL OF FORD'S

TIMING AND MORE.

>> FOR YOU TO SAY TO THOSE FOLKS

WHO PUT THEIR LIVES ON HOLD

BECAUSE THEY WANT TO DO PUBLIC

SERVICE, BY THE WAY YOU'RE

RUNNING FOR DOESN'T EXIST

ANYMORE, THAT'S UNCONSCIONABLE.

AND I STAND WITH MAYOR TORY ON

THIS AND SAY THAT IS A DIRECT

AFFRONT ON DEMOCRACY.

>> Andrew: THE CONCERN TO

DEMOCRACY IS ABOUT

REPRESENTATION.

CAN 25 COUNCILLORS PROPERLY

REPRESENT A CITY OF ALMOST 3

MILLION?

AND GROWING.

THAT MEANS 1 COUNCILLOR WOULD

REPRESENT ABOUT 112,000

CONSTITUENTS.

THE CLOSEST CANADIAN COMPARISON

WE COULD FIND IS CALGARY.

1 COUNCILLOR FOR EVERY 84,000

PEOPLE.

AND COMPARE THAT TO MONTREAL,

WHICH HAS 65 CITY COUNCIL

MEMBERS, THAT'S 1 FOR EVERY

26,000 PEOPLE AND THAT RANGE IS

FORD'S POINT.

IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW MANY

COUNCILLORS A CITY HAS, GOOD

GOVERNANCE WILL OVERCOME.

HE POINTS TO LOS ANGELES AS AN

EXAMPLE.

>> WHEN I TOLD THE CITY

COUNCILLORS IN LOS ANGELES WE

HAD 44 COUNCILLORS AND WE HAD

ABOUT 2.8 MILLION PEOPLE

ROUGHLY, THEY LOOKED AT ME LIKE

WE HAD THREE HEADS.

>> Andrew: FORD IS RIGHT ABOUT

L.A., IT HAS 15 CITY COUNCILLORS

FOR A POPULATION OF 4 MILLION.

THAT'S 1 COUNCILLOR PER 265,000

RESIDENTS, BUT IS THAT MORE

EFFICIENT?

COST EFFECTIVE?

WELL, THAT'S WHERE IT GETS A

LITTLE COMPLICATED.

A LOS ANGELES CITY COUNCILLOR

MAKES A LITTLE OVER $240,000

CANADIAN PER YEAR, A TORONTO

COUNCILLOR MAKES LESS THAN HALF

THAT, $112,000 AND ON AVERAGE,

L.A. COUNCILLORS HAVE 19 STAFF

MEMBERS WHO ARE PAID AND CAN

MANAGE WORKLOAD.

TORONTO, THE AVERAGE IS 3-4

STAFF.

NOW ON THE FLIP-SIDE TO ALL OF

THIS, FORD AND HIS SUPPORTERS

WOULD SAY THIS IS SIMPLY WHAT HE

WAS ELECTED TO DO.

CHANGE THINGS FOR ONTARIANS.

LESS THAN A MONTH ON THE JOB, HE

CAN POINT TO A NUMBER OF MAJOR

POLICY CHANGES.

FOR STARTERS, THE FORD

GOVERNMENT STRUCK A DEAL WITH

HYDRO ONE, THAT LED TO THE

C.E.O. AND BOARD RESIGNING.

FORD IS PHASING OUT THE

CAP-AND-TRADE PROGRAMME, WHICH

FORCED LARGE COMPANIES TO PAY

FOR CARBON DIOXIDE EMISSIONS.

ON THE EDUCATION FRONT, HE

ROLLED BACK THE SEX-ED

CURRICULUM TO THE OLD PROGRAMME,

THE ONE THAT DOESN'T TEACH ABOUT

CONSENT, GENDER IDENTITY AND

ONLINE SAFETY AND JUST YESTERDAY

HE SAID HE WILL ALLOW PRIVATE

RETAILERS TO SELL CANNABIS.

THINGS ARE MOVING QUICK AND

THERE IS LIKELY MORE TO COME.

LET'S GET STRATEGY FROM GINNY

ROTH.

A CONSERVATIVE STRATEGIST, AND

WE SHOULD SAY YOUR HUSBAND WORKS

FOR A CURRENT PROVINCIAL

MINISTER, SO TELL US WHAT SHOULD

THE PUBLIC UNDERSTAND ABOUT HOW

DOUG FORD IS OPERATING HERE?

>> Reporter: HE'S MOVING QUICKLY

BECAUSE HE HAS A MANDATE TO DO

SO.

THE VOTERS ELECTED HIM TO MAKE

CHANGE HAND HE'S MAKING CHANGE.

I THINK PEOPLE ARE GOING LIKE IT

BECAUSE HE HAS THE SINGLE MINDED

FOCUS ON GETTING THINGS DONE

QUICKLY AND MAKING SURE IT'S FOR

THE PEOPLE.

THAT WAS HIS MANDATE, THAT'S HIS

APPROACH.

>> Andrew: CAN YOU DO IT THIS

QUICKLY AND STILL GET IT RIGHT?

>> I THINK YOU CAN.

BECAUSE HE'S GOT A MANDATE FOR

IT.

AND HE'S DOGGED IN SAYING, IF WE

DON'T SEE RESULTS ON THE GROUND,

IF PEOPLE DON'T SEE THE GAS

TAXES GO DOWN, FEWER POLITICIANS

INSTEAD OF MORE, WE'RE NOT DOING

THINGS RIGHT.

IF THEY DON'T SEE IT QUICKLY,

THEN THEY WON'T GET THE MANDATE

THEY ASKED FOR WHEN THEY VOTED

FOR US.

THERE COULD BE RISKS.

YOU KNOW, SOME OF THE CABINET

MINISTERS ARE NEW, THEY'RE

LEARNING ON THE JOB.

BUT SO LONG AS YOU SEE THE

DISCIPLINE, I THINK IT'S ALWAYS

WORTH LEANING FORWARD AS HE'S

DOING AND GETTING RESULTS.

>> Andrew: SO THEN SET THE TABLE

FOR US AND LOOK FORWARD FOR US

IN TERMS OF WHAT YOU THINK MIGHT

BE COMING DOWN THE PIPE THAT

PERHAPS MAY HAVE AS BIG OF A

SPLASH AS TODAY'S ANNOUNCEMENT?

>> SO THEY PACKED A LOT IN,

REPEALING CAP-AND-TRADE,

REPEALING SEX-ED, THEY'RE MOVING

FORWARD AND THE BIG PIECE THAT

IS COMING IS FINANCIAL.

ON THE BUDGET, ON THE FALL

ECONOMIC STATEMENT, THEY'VE

LOOKED AT THE BOOKS.

THEY HAVE A COMMISSION THAT IS

LOOKING INTO THE SIZE AND COST

OF GOVERNMENT.

SOME OF THE RAMPANT WASTE FROM

THE LAST GOVERNMENT.

I DON'T THINK THE REPORT IS

GOING TO BE GOOD.

THAT'S GOING TO MEAN THAT

THEY'RE GOING TO DIG IN AND FIND

SAVINGS, BUT THAT'S WHAT THEY

WERE ELECTED FOR AND PEOPLE ARE

LOOKING FORWARD TO IT.

>> Andrew: THANK YOU FOR JOINING

US.

JUST IN A FEW MOMENTS ON "THE

NATIONAL", WE'LL TAKE YOU TO

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA WHERE A

WILDFIRE IS JUST 3% CONTAINED.

HOMES ARE BURNING.

AFTER A TOUGH TWO WEEKS FOR

DONALD TRUMP, SOME GOOD NEWS IN

THE ECONOMIC UPDATE.

ARE INTERNATIONAL TRADE SPATS

HELPING HIM AT HOME?

FIRST, SOMETHING THAT HITS CLOSE

TO HOME.

AN EMOTIONAL MOMENT ON THE

DANFORTH TONIGHT IN TORONTO.

>> I LOVE IT AND I CAN'T BELIEVE

THAT HAPPENED HERE.

I HAVE A LITTLE SON AND HE EVEN

NOTICED THAT SOMETHING HAPPENED,

HE SAID WHY IS THE STREET TAPED

OFF?

AND THAT'S HEARTBREAKING FOR ME.

>> Andrew: SO, SHE RETURNED TO

THE DANFORTH THIS EVENING TO

JOIN IN A MOMENT OF SILENCE

ORCHEST

ORGANIZED BY THE BUSINESSES THAT

LINE THE STRIP AND THE

EMPLOYEES.

THE LATEST STEP ON A LONG ROAD

BACK TO NORMAL.

IT WILL BE A LONG ROAD,

ESPECIALLY FOR DANIELLE KANE, A

NURSING STUDENT.

SHE WAS THE ONE BEING CARED FOR

TODAY AS DOCTORS PERFORMED HER

FOURTH SURGERY.

SHE WAS WITH HER BOYFRIEND JERRY

PINKSEN WHEN SHE WAS SHOT.

WE JOINED PINKSEN AS HE MADE THE

DIFFICULT JOURNEY BACK TO THE

SPOT WHERE EVERYTHING CHANGED.

>> I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE BEST TO

COME HERE AND JUST TO SEE THE

SITE, SEE IF I CAN SEE IF I CAN

START THE HEALING PROCESS, A

LITTLE QUICKER.

>> Reporter: JERRY PINKSEN AND

HIS GIRLFRIEND DANIELLE KANE

USED TO LOVE THE DANFORTH, BUT

LAST SUNDAY, THEIR LIVES WERE

CHANGED FOREVER.

DANIELLE WAS SHOT IN THE

ABDOMEN, IT SHATTERED A

VERTEBRA.

HER FAMILY FEARS SHE MAY NEVER

WALK AGAIN.

>> I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT

PEOPLE KNOW HER SACRIFICE.

>> Reporter: PINKSEN SAYS SHE

FOLLOWED HIM OUT OF THE

RESTAURANT THAT NIGHT TO HELP

SOMEONE WHO WAS INJURED.

THAT IS WHEN SHE WAS SHOT.

>> I INITIALLY SAW A LOT OF --

FELT A LOT OF GUILT BECAUSE LIKE

IT WAS MY INITIAL DECISION TO GO

OUTSIDE TO HELP THE WOUNDED.

I'M THE ONE -- I'M THE ONE WHO

DID THIS -- I MADE THE DECISION

TO GO OUT.

AND SHE -- SHE GOT INJURED.

>> SHE IS THE PERSON WHO WANTS

TO HELP?

>> THAT'S WHY I FELL IN LOVE

WITH HER.

THAT'S WHY I LOVE HER SO MUCH,

SHE'S SUCH A SELFLESS PERSON.

>> Reporter: AFTER HER COUSIN

FIRST SHARED HER STORY WITH "THE

NATIONAL", THERE IS OUTPOURING

OF SUPPORT FOR KANE.

THERE HAS BEEN GO FUND ME SET UP

FOR REHAB AND HOUSING.

>> WHEN I HEAR THE KIND WORDS,

IT JUST FILLS ME UP AND ALLOWS

KNOW KEEP GOING.

>> Reporter: HOW ARE YOU FEELING

COMING UP TO THE RESTAURANT?

>> I -- I THINK I'M READY.

I THINK I'M -- I THINK I WANT TO

SEE IT.

>> Reporter: WE'RE HERE.

>> WE WERE RIGHT HERE.

ON THE PATIO.

AND -- THIS IS THE EXIT WHERE WE

CAME OUT OF.

>> Reporter: WHY IS IT IMPORTANT

TO GET YOURSELF BACK HERE?

TO SEE THIS, TO FACE THIS?

>> IT HELPS TO TALK ABOUT IT.

IT HELPS TO LESSEN THE ANGER AND

HELPS TO LESSEN THE FEAR.

AND WHEN DANIELLE IS READY AND

ABLE, I WANT TO BRING HER BACK

HERE, I WANT HER TO SEE IT, AND

I WANT US TO HEAL TOGETHER.

>> Andrew: LATE TODAY, WE GOT

WORD FROM DANIELLE'S FAMILY

ABOUT TODAY'S SURGERY.

HER FOURTH AS I MENTIONED SINCE

SHE WAS SHOT.

THEY SAID THE SURGERY WAS A HUGE

SUCCESS.

THIS IS LIKELY HER FINAL

SURGERY.

THEY'RE STARTING TO WEAN HER OFF

THE VENTILATOR AND DECREASE

SEDATION.

HOPEFULLY SHE'LL BE ABLE TO

SPEAK BY MONDAY.

THE NEXT STEP IS REHABILITATION.

>>> LET'S TAKE YOU WEST TO

BECAUSE IN THE MIDWEST WE GET A

TORNADO AND BLIZZARD, AND I'M

LIKE, A BLIZZARD IS WORST THAN A

THEY SAY IT'S REALLY BAD.

FOR CALIFORNIANS TO SAY IT'S

BAD, THAT MEANS IT'S REALLY BAD.

>> Andrew: RIGHT NOW, SHE'S IN A

The longest total lunar eclipse of the century takes place early Saturday morning, Korea time - Duration: 0:41.

In some lighter news,... there was a record-breaking lunar eclipse early Saturday, Korea time.

The longest total lunar eclipse of the century began in Australia and Indonesia,... at around

2 a.m., on Saturday.

The total eclipse lasted for just over an hour and half,... and a partial eclipse took

place for some four hours.

Lunar eclipses can occur only during a full moon, and this one was extra special as it

was also what's known as a 'blood moon', meaning the moon was in perfect alignment with the

sun and the Earth, giving the moon a reddish tint.

People across the globe came out of their buildings to enjoy the view and take photos

of the rare eclipse.

Lab Equipment: The Clevenger Apparatus - Duration: 6:56.

Greetings fellow nerds.

In previous videos i've shown the dean stark apparatus.

A very useful piece of equipment that lets you take advantage of azeotropes that phase separate to remove one of them from a mixture.

This is especially useful for removing water from solvents like toluene or xylene.

For a complete review, you can check my original video which i've linked in the video description.

Briefly, the dean stark apparatus is installed onto the boiling flask containing your mixture and a condenser connected on top.

Vapors travel through the apparatus and condense where they phase seperate into a lighter and heavier phase.

The lighter phase overflows flows back into the boiling flask where it will boil out with more of the heavier phase, usually water.

The water collects in the trap as the distillation runs.

This is the traditional dean stark apparatus and this mode of operation is also known as light return mode

since we're returning the lighter phase while keeping the heavy phase.

Sometimes though we want heavy return mode, where the heavy phase is returned.

For example, in purifying very high boiling organic substances using steam distillation.

I did this when i was purifying 7-hexyl-7-tridecanol.

A lot of herbalists also use this to extract essential oils.

But a traditional dean stark apparatus doesn't actually have this functionality.

So to do this i had to improvise my own heavy return dean stark apparatus from various pieces of lab equipment.

I didn't buy a specialized apparatus because i didn't think i was going to need it enough.

Well, now that i'm doing a bit more organic chemistry

i've decided that improvising my own apparatus everytime was too cumbersome as well as detrimental to the chemistry

since there is a huge amount of deadspace in the apparatus where i could lose product.

My apparatus also needs to be prefilled with carrier solvent and this also adds to the waste and contamination of our reactions.

Now a perfectly specialized unit is rather costly, and i was never going to buy that.

But there is a much cheaper type that sacrifices a bit of effectiveness but still offers a powerful tool for the amateur.

It's called the clevenger apparatus.

That name always makes me laugh, it sounds like a superhero pornstar.

Anyway, let's have a look at the design.

The clevenger apparatus has a stopcock to conveniently drain the trap contents.

The boiling flask is attached to this arm and the vapors travel up the arm

and to the condenser column where they condense back into a liquid and fall into the trap.

All of this is just like a traditional dean stark apparatus.

The interesting part is this arm that connects the lower part of the trap to the vapor carrying arm.

Rather than overflowing from the top like a traditional dean stark apparatus, the condensate overflows through this arm.

You'll also notice that rather than connecting as close as possible to the bottom, the arm is connected to the middle of the trap.

This actually allows us to use this as both a light return or heavy return dean stark apparatus depending on how we process the condensate.

Now i know this is almost impossible to understand without some visual examples so let me show it in use.

So here is a boiling flask containing some organic solvents and water and i've connected up the clevenger apparatus.

On top is the condenser column.

Now we just boil the mixture and start condensing.

Looks like i got a bit of foam over but i'm not worried, this is just a demonstration.

Now the trap will fill and as said before, the lower arm channels the distillate back into the boiling flask.

As you can see here the lighter phase is flowing back while the heavier phase collects in the bottom below the return arm.

If you drain the heavier phase then this operates exactly like a traditional dean stark apparatus in light return mode.

So you conveniently have a dean stark apparatus when you need it.

But of course, you can already use a traditional dean stark apparatus for that.

What if we want heavy return mode, how do we collect the lighter phase?

Let me reset the apparatus this time using lots and lots of water so it's easier to demonstrate.

I've also prefilled the trap with water but this is optional, you can run the trap empty and this will still work,

a big advantage over my improvised apparatus.

Now let me start the boiling.

And there we go.

As you can see the distillate is collecting in the trap and phase separating.

The lighter phase is filling the trap while the heavier phase is channeled up the return arm and overflows over.

The lighter phase cannot overflow until it fills enough to reach the lower return arm.

This is an important point about how the clevenger apparatus works.

Eventually if you have enough of both phases, they'll reach equilibrium at the return arm.

At this point both phases overflow and return to the boiling flask.

If either of them distills more, then it's returned more and the cycle reaches equilibrium.

It doesn't matter where you start or what ratio of either phase distills.

Anyway, collecting the lighter phase is a bit unwieldy.

You first drain the heavier phase, then quickly swap out the collection container and drain the lighter phase.

You then take the heavier phase and pour it back into the apparatus through the condenser column.

At which point you can continue the distillation as usual.

Not exactly elegant, but at the same time, miles better than my improvised apparatus which actually didn't have a means of collecting as it ran.

You had to actually shut down everything, collect, and then restart or use very large collecting traps.

This clevenger apparatus does a much better job.

So overall the clevenger apparatus is a very convenient dual mode form of the dean stark apparatus.

You can use it exactly like a dean stark apparatus in light return mode by draining away the heavy phase as it collects.

And with a bit of manual labor, you can use it in heavy return mode by draining both phases,

manually returning the heavy phase, and keeping the lighter phase.

A special note if you're buying this.

A lot of clevenger apparatuses have the return arm connected near the bottom of the trap.

These such apparatuses can only be used in heavy return mode.

The upside is that without a bottom half to fill, it's easier to collect the lighter phase without having to manually return the heavy phase.

But if you want to a dual use apparatus, you need to find one that connects the return arm above the bottom like this one.

On the other hand, if you're an herbalist or otherwise don't need light return mode then such an apparatus will probably be desirable

since it saves on the labor of monitoring the apparatus and returning the heavy phase.

But for the amateur chemist, i recommend getting a dual use apparatus like this one to access the broad range of experiments you'll encounter.

Anyway, there you have it, the clevenger apparatus.

Remote Program C-more HMI: StrideLinx VPN Cloud - Duration: 4:56.

In this video, we will show the process of getting connected to a C-more HMI through

the StrideLinx VPN connection.

If you have not already setup you Router please see the videos for the initial setup, in the

description below.

Once you have setup your router, then continue on to this video.

First, we need to discuss the C-more IP address setup.

In this example, this is IP address of the VPN router on the control side.

To remotely program your C-more HMI it must be on the same subnet as the VPN router and

have the IP address of the Router as it's Default Gateway.

This way the C-more will be communicating through the router.

It is very important that everything is a static IP address, as one limitation of VPN

networks is that Broadcast comms will not work and broadcast comms is what is used for

auto discovery of devices.

Now let's set up the C-more's IP address locally for the first time.

So, with your C-more project open, select setup, Panel Network and then select the Ethernet

Tab.

So, enter in the IP address information we discussed before.

And then select ok.

And send this project to your HMI Now that the HMI PLC has been setup and shipped

to the remote location, let's make our first connection through the StrideLinx and read

our project from the panel..

Open up the StrideLinx page, select your device and then connect.

Once the IX client is connected, open up the C-more software and then select Read from

Panel.

Select Ethernet and then browse.

Under Network, select the Windows Tapp Adapter.

This is the virtual connection that the IXClient uses to connect to the VPN cloud.

Now, select the Remote Link List and then Add.

Give this connection a name.

Enter in the IP address of the C-more Panel and then typically on remote connection like

this I increase the Timeouts to the max.

Hit Ok.

Now select the link that we just created and select Ok.

Now the software will browse for the Panel and then give you a go no/Go, on the Connection.

Now select to read the project.

Now you can make changes to your project and update the panel.

Let's go one step farther here, and show remotely viewing the the panel with the Remote

access feature.

In the C-more panel, to turn on remote access in your project.

Go to Setup and then Panel Network.

To turn on Remote access there is two parts to this.

We must turn on the Web server and then activate the Remote access.

While we are here if you are emailing alarms, through your HMI, we must allow internet access

with the VPN Router.

This can be found in the dashboard under configuration.

So, under Web server enable this function.

You can also change which port this uses and secure the communication with a password.

I am going to leave it open for the purposes of this video.

Now Select the Remote Access tab.

Since this VPN makes you part of the local network we do not need to add the complexity

of the remote connection.

I am going to leave the permission as View Only and use the default Account name without

a password.

This setup can be more advanced I just want to show the basic features of this connection.

Now select Ok and send this project to your HMI.

Once this is loaded, open up an Internet browser and enter in the IP address of this HMI.

Now select the remote access Link.

And now select the No firewall.

This will download an executable file that you can run on your PC.

So, select the application and not you will be asked to enter in the user name and password.

Select Ok.

And now we can view the panel.

This connection can make Improving, Controlling and monitoring your HMI and control system

much easier.

A little safety disclaimer.

Before you make any changes to your PLC Remotely take into account what you are activating

and deactivating remotely as it may cause an unsafe condition.

It is always best to have local eyes on the equipment while making these changes.

This is where the digital input on the VPN router can be useful, it will allow you to

lock out remote changes until someone is there to monitor to safety purposes

ARCHIVIEWS : Episode 2 | Ar Shamini Shanker | SS+PD - Duration: 39:21.

Hello Everyone, welcome back to Archiviews. Welcome to episode 2. Today we are in conversation

with Ar. Shamini Shankar, from Shamini Shankar + Pranay Deep Studio. So welcome maam,

welcome to the show. Thank You.

And thank you for being a part of it. Oh, thank you its a pleasure.

Before we actually go on to discussing, our topics today with maam. Lets first have

a quick look at Shamini Shankar Plus Pranay Deep Studio.

Graduating from School of Architecture, CEPT, Ahmedabad in 1981, Ar Shamini Shankar, along

with her partner and her husband Pranay Deep Started Shamini Shankar plus Pranay Deep.

Keeping a high regard for local materials, climate and the context of a place, SS+PD

have grown their office from a small room with only these two, to a full-fledged office

today. SS+PD began work in that atmosphere of idealism and hope. Over the years they

have done a large number of projects and the idealism has not waned. From schools to industrial

complexes, from buildings for leisure & entertainment to private homes and dwellings, a lot of craft

and thought has been administered in each of their projects. Ar Shamini Shankar is also

keen on educating young minds, and is invited to various talks all over the country, where

listening to her is both inspiring and though provoking.

So maam could you tell us a little bit about yourself about where and a little bit

about the firm. Alright so I studied architecture from CEPT

Ahmedabad, in the years 1981-86, and thereafter we started our firm, along with my husband

Pranay Deep, who is also an alumnus of CEPT. And here we are in Jaipur, since 1987. So

SS+PD architects, started in 1987, in Jaipur. So SS+PD was just two of us, for many years,

and we worked with a couple of , not graduates, staff from the MES, who use to come in the

evening part-time, and they were a very dedicated lot. And so through the day, we struggled

both of us, we enjoyed our work, we enjoyed our conversations, we enjoyed the few clients

that we got and I think we also enjoyed working a lot with our part time staff. Those were

the days where, we did everything, from accounting to buying our stationary, to listening to

fresh music, to dealing with clients, to making our own coffee, to making coffee for our clients.

So it was personalized service right through. So those were the struggles and those were

the jubilations of a fresh young practice. So even if we started, we never started like

many of you all in todays generation start big, we never had that opportunity. We started

with very small opportunities. Specially with the advent of social media,

even if we start, we start like, if there is one project, it will be everywhere, like

Facebook, Instagram, everything, so that its more discoverable.

Absolutely, so we didnt have all those. So you started right after college?

I started right after college. My husband pranay deep, he worked with B. V. Doshi, and

he worked with Anant Raje, and he worked with Varun Sen from Jaipur, and thereafter he started

the firm that was after we got married and I came here to settle down. So I joined the

practice immediately after I finished from the school of architecture.

Okay so lets dive into our first segment which is the Practice, the Design & the Field,

or as we call it the PDF. Amm, so before anything else maam, is there a particular philosophy

in design you follow or is every new project like a fresh challenge?

No, I think we definitely follow our own philosophy of design, and I think, that is by far what

many practices do is as you move through, you develop that philosophy also. There are

certain, inherent qualities to the way you think. The way you have been exposed during

your five years of education, the way you believe that architecture is primary, and

that you are actually doing a service and not a business, so that is one thing that

we felt very strongly that, let us be service oriented, let us give two hundred percent

to what ever we are doing. And, as I aid, we are idealistic, so we always said, you

do a good job, it speaks and youll always get the money, and I still believe in that.

So our philosophy really has been, to work with the context from where, from where you

are actually beginning to design. So it is important to understand our culture, our materials,

to work with our natural systems, whether it is trying to cool our buildings or whether

it is trying to heat our buildings. I think for us it was very important to, to be able

to use technology judiciously. Yes there have been, technology is something you need to

use, but I felt that our buildings needed to breathe, our buildings needed to live a

good life. I felt that our buildings should not be temporary, and I felt that it needed

to, you know, maximize its utility for the people who we actually built for.

Maam what about, like you said, you want permanence in a building and you look at climate

and everything, you are looking at the building as a living body, to construct it in a way

that it can function efficiently, and fluently and wrap around its user. But what if the

clients demands something, because when you talk about building into the context, so what

if your client demands, suppose we start with a house, and he wants a house that looks magnificent

that stands out, that pops out from all of its surroundings, that you know would not

really, may not set well with its surroundings and not gel that well, so how do you go around

in that situation when the client demands something like that.

You see, Ive often heard architects and sadly students of architecture also talking

about how we must do what the clients want, you see the clients in my opinion knows no

better. So, yeah, but he doesnt know our profession, it is our duty to respect what

he has to say, what his thoughts are, because after all he is going to be using the, the

building, but I think it is our duty to educate him through the lens of an architect and try

and talk to him about the pros and the cons, I think it is very important for us to educate

clients, rather, to make them listen. It is also important to respect what they are saying

and also try and workout ways in which you incorporate their ideas, but you also show

them your ideas, and it has worked wonderfully. So maam, so talking about as you said,

about your philosophy of being hands on with the material, with the context, what is your

take on parametric architecture or conceptualizing architecture through digital manipulations?

You know as much as parametrics fascinate me, but that is not my kind of architecture,

that I am comfortable with, and I look at them as all you know, they look like urban

installations to me. The way people use these, highly computed models to design life size

buildings, sometimes I really thing its, its very robotic. I dont believe that

there is a human being sitting next to, or you know behind that or in front of that faade

and who is actually kind of with blood sweat and tears designed it. I think that is the

kind of generation maybe, we come from, so when a computer does that, and when a human

mind so deftly, you know, works with that computer to create these life size installations,

its intriguing, but its not my kind of architecture. And I think this kind of

architecture, one has to be very careful about where these so called urban installations

are placed. Or whether, for instance, now you have Amravati, you have many of these

visuals that you are seeing, you know of buildings that are created through these parametric

modelling or models. So if you are trying to create a new generation, or a new generation

of buildings that just look like that in a city which would just you know, where the

buildings just vibe with each other, trying to be more iconic than the other, and more

futuristic than the other, to me that takes away the human element.

Isnt this similar to what Dubai has done? Yes, yes, but a lot of people enjoy what they

see in Dubai. A lot of people, I have not had that opportunity, I hope to go someday

soon. Its actually kind of, its really nice

when you are going across you see, because its a different pace from what we are used

to, so when you go across those buildings, so basically when I went for the first time,

I did not like the buildings at all during the day time. I was like they are all just

a bunch of glass and metal, and it looks bad. The next time I went, I looked at each building

individually, when I saw that the kind of design they had tried on the building of,

giving that corner a cut, trying on this balcony. So certain aspects of the building, I could

finally see the craft within the buildings when I saw them individually and not as a

whole. Aah, so yeah, so maybe that needs to properly

be looked at. Are you a fan of Gaudi maam, Antonio Gaudi.

I am. I am very much. But you know, when you look at that gentlemans human mind and

the ability at that time, with limited resources, to be able to conceive something like that

and also to be able to get something like that made, that was all to do with you know,

him and the craftsmen, so that was amazing how he could actually get together, to be

able to translate his ideas, you know to be actually able to work with all those building

crafts, and to get them up together, to me that is blood sweat and tears.

But that, I mean the forms he made, similar to what we could, I mean Sagrada Famila, now

closer to completion than it is, so amm, seeing the kind of forms that he does create inside,

a lot of people who pursue parametric architecture, kind of go on to those forms as well, the

only difference is, his was skillfully made, by hand, by artisans, they conceive it digitally.

So, what my question I think would be, you would still prefer, you would still prefer

blood sweat tears, handmade, than digitally fabricated.

Yes, I think that is my, you know, what I soulfully believe in, and what I would be

more comfortable with, and I think, India is also changing, our country is also changing,

and it wont be far before we have these kind of buildings, dotting our landscape, we have

to be prepared for that, but, are we still, at this moment, prepared for this kind of

explosive spending? I would rather have all that be spent on infrastructure, of our cities,

and give every one of us a dignity of good city life, and then we think of moving ahead

into breaking a new kind of a city landscape. Alright maam, tell us how the field is

different from what actually we learn in college. And any challenge that you faced, while in

the field, that you couldnt have sort of prepared for in the college.

College is a secure secluded, I mean not secluded, its a secure life. And specially for a

woman, so yes, you are pampered, you have your parents looking after you right through

those five years. You have, depending on where you are studying, I studied in the best, we

had the best exposure, wonderful colleagues, peer group, wonderful seniors, and we always

had mentorship. So whether it was through the guise of your professors, or through your

peers, through your juniors, or through your seniors, there was a wonderful collaboration,

right. Though studying architecture, the curriculum is such that except probably for very few

occasions where you work in groups, mostly you work as an individual. And you work just

on one predetermined path, that is you have these many things to do, sometimes if you

wish to not take care of these other subjects you have to you know settle on design, and

you kind of focus on your design and whatever it is you need to understand, study read.

Yeah we could have like, the other things take a back track, and we can focus.

And then you feel you are ready to come out and start working, the reality is very different.

I think, a), in trying to get your projects, I think there is a lot of luck involved. And

also it depends on what kind of a background you are. But having said that, we all have

struggled. So you get your first project and its that jubilation that you feel, but you

are still uncertain as to how you are going to deal with this project right through because

now you are going to actually build it, and then you are actually working with a contractor.

Yeah, its not just on paper anymore. Yes so now from something that was within

reach, within you know, the size of your tracing sheet, you are actually now making a whole

lot of drawings, with the skills that you have learnt over those five years, including

the skills of that particular region you are trying to get used to, because you may know

that a foundation is made in a certain manner, but the contractor may be used to another

manner, so you have to try and tell that you know, convince him that you want it in this

manner. You understood, so you are actually now working on many dimensions, trying to

work with the client, trying to convince the contractor, he is assessing you all the time,

because he wants to know, how much have you understood from your study, or you just coming

in front of me and, you know, making noises. So he is assessing you all the time. So that

is why, when I come to telling students, my advice, take your subjects very seriously,

and it is not just design, it is also all those aspects that help you improve your design.

So then actually the reality strikes because then you have to also talk about your fees,

which you are just not sure about, and invariably when you are young, people take you for granted,

thats part of the whole thing. I think now you all are much smarter. So a) is that

you dont have immediate mentorship, so you are on your own, and b) you are dealing

with on many fronts, and c) you are dealing with an entire construction industry, which

deals with different materials and products, you know. So you have this whole confusion

in front of you, because you need to actually put those elements into your architecture

to make it work, right. You have to take a lot of decisions on your own, almost 2000

3000 decisions for a small house, you need to make at least a 100 drawing.

Which at the end would be your responsibility, if it goes wrong.

Yes, yes. And I firmly believe you must make drawings. So, I think, those are things that

you learn, as you evolve, and then become more experimental. Yeah, but you do miss the

free spiritedness of college, which I think it will be great if you can actually take

that free spiritedness through your professional life because then I think the joy of learning

and designing will also be there. Instead of you know, all the time being under pressure

to be able to perform. So that is the level of control of stress that I think we all need

to go through. Okay so now let us dive into the segment 2

which is the Project, so as you all know in this segment we would be discussing a project

that maam and sir have designed, and we will be trying to understand their design

process, and what all challenges they came through while designing their project and

how they resolved it. So before we actually go onto the project, let us get an introduction

of what the project is. The Umang School was designed as in inclusive

school for the differently abled. Right from the start, the project was catered to with

love, with respect and most importantly with a lot of research. The challenges of circulation

and movement were key in this school which was beautifully catered to with the help of

ramps. Each space was carefully considered and discussed with teachers who knew the children

better than anyone. From taking care of heat and light in the building, to the use of color,

everything done in the school was done for a reason and with great care.

So we just saw an introduction to the project, and now we have the project laid out on the

board and, let us start discussing on it about, how the process went, what challenges came

up. So maam before anything could you brief us about the site and the client brief.

Yeah so, this is a site in the ratio of 1:2, so about 32 by 64 meters, approximately 2000

sq meters. There was a massive inclination from the main road to the rear of the site

of about 3 floors, approximately 9 meters. And out of those 9 meters, we had at least

1.5 to 1.8 meters of landfill. So it became a very expensive project for them because

this was primarily on a lot of donations that they were building this school for the specially

challenged. So, I mean, but regardless of that, the aspirations of this school were

such that, we had to take into consideration, anyway, all these challenges because they

had a prime property, right there at Shipra path. And it was given to them by the government

on a very good rate. So looking at this and understand that we had to actually work with

these specially challenged children, so the vertical circulation became very important

which means to say comfortable ramps, easy access to lifts and staircases, and they had

to be central enough so they could access these vertical circulation quite easily from

any part of the building as well as also access the utilities or the toilets because in their

previous school, every child who went to a toilet was taken by a volunteer. So that meant

a lot of volunteers and that meant a lot of time. So that was one of the things when we

actually started designing the building, we knew that these were the things that needed

to be actually established on the site. So the feedback today is that they are all independent.

They just get up from their classrooms which are around here, and they know that this is

where the toilet is, they go to the toilet on their own, they are self-sufficient, independent,

so they are finding a change in the way they are using the school today. So that was something

that was important to me. Second thing is that because there was this huge inclination,

and the authorities were not allowing us to utilize this space, so we made this a playground,

which means that there was a lot of time required for the kids to come down for their morning

prayer and for any kind of festival celebrations or something was all done at the lowermost.

The lower basement what we call, which actually opened out into these set back areas which

are all landscaped today. So I think that is a wonderful way in which we kind of started

them out. Gave them a little color even on the outside, so that when they enter school

they start feeling the whole idea of school and excitement. So yeah, that was it, we tried

to work with materials that are very easily available, and easy to maintain, and thats

what you see now. So as you told us what factors influenced

the designing of this project, what was the process like while designing it, so was there

any initial idea that you started with that evolved into the final product, or you just

kept looking at things where they went and kept adding more to.

No I think, you see we could not go beyond what was, this was absolutely pre-determined,

because we had to utilize the maximum available space after the setback, so compliance was

very crucial because, the authorities scrutinized this through thick and thin and we had to

make at least 12 trips to the JDA to get everything sanctioned. You see the primary concern for

me was, that we were totally hemmed in by other people, earlier they were planning to

give us a road here, which means, I could have drained all my water out. In this case

now, all the water is settling inside the site. So any flood condition, I could not

take any chances. And to evacuate these children had to be primary concern under any eventuality

if there was a fire, if there was you know. So the way I positioned this, and at every

level, at one certain stage I had this balcony because I said if there is a fire, these children

should either try and get out through the emergency, or they should try and get out

from here, or if they are stuck, people have to come up here and be able to save them from

this. So were given a lot of help from the school itself. We also had the guidelines,

which gave us everything about you know wheel chair users, and specially challenged children.

And I think, you know, they are very happy with, with what they have because from what

they were earlier, where they had six different, you know, homes used for their schools, to

a compact building now, and they find that these children are becoming very independent

and enjoy coming to school. I think that is the greatest gift that me as an architect

could ever wish for. I get the feedback from them, so thats why I am able to say that

there are a lot of things working well here. Yes, so it has been a very nice, its been

a very enriching journey doing this project. Amm, so maam it has been lovely learning

today, learning about the project and it is a really beautiful project and Ill put

some, obviously there were some photographs that were already shown in the video, and

if there are some links Ill put them down below so that you can have a look. And now

let us move on to segment three. Alright lets move on to segment three,

segment three is about education, so here we will be discussing, certain topics that

are more relevant to students now, and how they can prepare themselves for the future

ahead. Okay maam so my first question to you would be something that all architecture

students are asked as well. So how did you end up studying architecture, was it planned

or did you happen to study it. No, there have been architects in the family.

My mother was a, well before my mother, her uncle worked with Frank Lloyd Wright, and

he was one of the biggest architects in Sri Lanka. So that was one exposure because, as

kids, we had within the family, some of the finest modern homes that came up during, during

the sixties and the seventies. My mother then became a, she started practicing interior

design, and she is also a very well-known interior designer in Chennai. And she used

to get a lot of architecture interns to do her work in the evenings. And there was a

lot of exchange with those interns because, those were the days when these boys used to

come and make some fabulous perspectives for her.

We are talking about a time when everything is done by hand.

Yes, Yeah, I mean that used to intrigue me because, you could see all these wonderful

you know, images and which were part of the presentations and things like that. So, and

all the drawings were very well laid out and, so that introduction came earlier, and a lot

of my family is very creative. So I think, I think that was one of the more natural instincts

to do architecture after I finish school. Okay so much, as you said, so how much does

a good institute matter on what kind of a designer you would be?

I think an institute matters hugely. Because a good institute will always nurture you,

will always you know, look at exposing you to the best in what was and in what is. Its

also an institute that would give you really good facilities to develop skills, and I think

a good institute, overall, just the primary aim is to ensure that they come out with students

of architecture who will be good ambassadors for the profession.

So all the perspective students out there, please look at good institutes.

Now you all have many more options. Yeah because I get a lot of messages, I dont, I will

study on this and respond to you guys, but I get a lot of messages on what are good institutes,

which ones do I apply to, Ive not got into this one, now what do I do. So I get a lot

of messages from perspective students who want to get into the profession but because,

even back then, we, I dont know I got into Manipal because I had, my 12th scores had

not come out yet. I had given A levels, so I had no 12th scores while applying, I had

predicted scores. So half of my colleges were cut down. So I could only apply to a handful

of colleges, so then I finally got into Manipal University Jaipur. But so, I also so not have

that much of an experience of what to do now, something like that because my father had

kept Manipal as a backup option for me while I still kept applying to everywhere else.

Yeah smart boy like you should have got into a place like CEPT or something.

Yeah but. But then yeah, so what.

I did work out in the end. Yeah, actually CEPT is not the only thing

today. You have a lot of options. I personally also believe that even if you

are in a good college, its a personal responsibility to your education forward as well. And that

is what I have always done because I have always tried, because if there is something

I want to learn, I go and learn and then if there is no teacher around to teach me, I

find somebody who can teach me or I teach it to myself, because there is a lot more

opportunity now to teach yourself. So I think finally, the learning process is

this way because nobody is going to hand hold you. Which it does happen in Manipal. But

ultimately that is not the option with you, you have to be a self-learner, you have to

find your own motivation you have to find your own learning skills. You have to find

the right people you can learn with, so thatll happen even in a good institute, but in a

bad institute, when I say bad, you it just suck your energy.

Yes, you have to develop that energy. Nothing stimulating, then its difficult.

Some people can do it maybe, but others then will just sink. So Im looking at a majority

kind of student. So like a good institute is always charged,

here you have to kind of start the charge yourself and which probably you could do in

Manipal, but your colleagues or your peer group could not do much of it because, many

of them did not come with the intention of looking at architecture as a profession. You

see, so, that makes a big difference. Okay so any book you would like to recommend

to our student viewers? Amm, intentions in Architecture by Norberg-Schulz,

is something we read in school and I still think its a bible for us. You truly do

understand what architecture is all about through the mind of this great philosopher.

Other than that I also like Christopher Benningers book for young architects, and I think every

student of Architecture must read that. And, of course there are large number of books,

Rahul Melhotras book on Architecture in India since 1980. I think thats a good

book for us to understand the evolution of modern architecture up to now, its a beautiful

book. Well written, well documented. Okay any final advice for our student viewers?

Yes I think, be honest to yourself when youre actually choosing a profession. Dont get

into architecture if you are not interested. It can be such a curse.

No because I also get this, a lot of people, & I want to put it out there specially do

not expect to earn a lot in this profession specially in your starting years, because

a lot of people come with this mindset because, they kind of I think interchange Architecture

with Real Estate, or just being in the construction industry. Because, that makes money, if you

get into real estate, there is money in it, but architecture, when you come into this

profession, you get money as well, its not like you wont but, it is more about

your personal fulfillment in architecture that.

Yes, I think thats very important. So I think a lot of people believe that they come

into this profession because it is a well breded profession, but its not so, it is

a lot of hard work. But its like any other profession in that sense, I mean if you really

want to make money, you have to choose your direction, but if you want to really put in

your soul into what you are doing, then there is a kind of a process or a path that will

take some time perhaps and, I think thats the fulfilling part of the profession. The

difference is that in your country you can start on your own if you wish to start on

your own, but my advice to students is that after you finish, work for about five years,

in an office, or in a studio of your choice, where you feel that there is some kind of

a philosophy of design, that matches with your sense of the profession.

A lot of people have advised me that. Yes, so that I think the whole idea is for

fulfillment, so that you can actually enjoy the whole process of architecture.

You have to learn to love your work and I think you need to have more, maybe through

this we can get to more audience, so we need to have something that could explain all this

to students when they are choosing their profession as well. Because at that time its, because

its a five years course and not like other 3 year courses where you have time to do something

else if you want. Like by you graduate you are already 23, and if you do masters after

thats two more years and that is tuition fee, that is, if you are moving to a new city,

that is rent and everything so, Architecture as a course is really expensive as well. And

getting into it, you need to understand what you are getting into as well.

So I will say before you even think of architecture, so should go and look at some of the studios

of architects. Yeah.

Understand what is this profession about, and you know try and understand what is the

journey that these people have taken. I think that is important for a student to understand

the profession before he or she enters it. That is also one of the main motives why I

wanted to do this is then we can also talk to architects and learn and in their own words

they talk about the profession about, how they are doing it. And you can actually look

at it and understand if it is for you. So that was it for episode 2 of archiviews,

thank you so much maam for being a part of it.

do that, please subscribe to this channel, and please click on the bell icon to get future

updates of whenever a new video comes out. I would have a big outro but I think we have

exceeded a lot of our time for the interview. Thank you so much maam it was amazing talking
