in every symposium we take a moment to pay tribute to Allan Kardec the coded
fire of spiritism Kardec was born in October 3rd and this month we celebrate
the 200th 13th anniversary of his birthday this year mr. Bradlee
apparently Epling from german town spirit society will present you with a
moving story about Kardec in a bookbinder mr. shepley is a technical
writer and holds a Bachelor degree in mass communications from Florida
International University and a master's in information and telecommunication
systems from Johns Hopkins University with you mr. Bradley
good afternoon everyone what I am about to relate to you today is a true story
set against a background of pain pain is something that we have discussed amongst
other tender mercies today this happened more than 150 years ago in Paris France
on a particular morning in April 1860 professor Raphael was feeling exhausted
overwhelmed and sad spring was approaching but it was still bitterly
cold outside after a very long and harsh winter even with a consolidation of the
spirit of society of Paris even with the promise selling of books money was
scarce to continue this very important and enormous task that was put in his
hands by the superior spirits
he felt this increasing pressure to get this work done at a moment when he's
feeling the heaviest in his heart a
carefully wrapped package arrived at the door you opened the package and found
inside it he had no idea what it was he found
inside a letter and a beautifully indoor look he was curious so he opened the
letter began to read it said mature Allan Kardec
the warmest of greetings with my gratitude I send you the enclosed book
as well as a story behind it asking you first of all to continue the task of
enlightening humanity for I have strong reasons to request this of you I have
been a bookbinder since I was a little boy working in a large publishing house
in this capital about two years ago I married the one who turned out to be my
ideal companion our life read normally and everything was joy and hope
when unexpectedly earlier this year my Antoinette departed from this life taken
by an unexpected disease my despair was indescribable and I felt myself
condemned to extreme helplessness without faith in God feeling in the
needs of the man of the world in living with the distressing doubts of our
century I decided to follow the path of so many others faced with this fatality
the trial the separation had overcome me and I was now nothing but a human rag I
was missing work of my boss threatened to fire me I felt drained powerless many
times I went to the River Seine and planned the possibility of taking my own
life it would be easy I thought I can't swim after countless sleepless nights
and days of distress one dawn when the city was covered in darkness and a cold
wind thrashed mercilessly when worries and discouragement overwhelmed me I
sought the pont marie bridge over the river seine i looked down
mesmerised by the moving of water and as i place my hand on the stone wall lining
the side of the bridge just ready to jump
I touched an object that shifted from the railing falling to my feet a little
confused I noticed a book that the dew had dampened I reached down and took it
in my hands looking for the dim light of a nearby signpost lamppost I opened and
I could read written on the frontispiece inside this book saved my life
read it carefully and make good use of it and it was signed a Laurent
astonished I read the book and found many reasons to live and to struggle
even in the first few pages of it I learned that it was possible to bear
life's misfortunes with courage and resignation and find hope again and that
pain was not without us I realized that I needed to present it as a gift to the
one who had produced such a treasure this is the volume that I give to you to
your selfless hands authorizing you to do as you pleased after finishing this
letter this very touching letter kardec opened the book to the slightly stained
page of the premise piece and read these descriptions this book saved my
life read it carefully and make good use of
it Sunday Laurent and beneath that was something else
it saved my life also may God bless the souls who contributed to its publication
and it was signed Joseph Perry a this unique book that had prevented two men
two people from taking their lives had been published
he realized three years previous April 18th 1857 and it was the spirits
book with this professor Raphael felt a new energy a new light beating
him inside holding this book to his heart he no longer thought about
discouragement or self-sacrifice but a radiant hope hope he understood the
vital importance of his mission this compiling and organizing the books
which established spiritism spiritism becoming a messenger of comfort and hope
to all humanity he knew it was essential at that point to carry on excusing the
insults embracing embracing the sacrifice and ignoring
the insults that were in these messages that piled up on his desk
before him he could see a turbulent world that was in need of comfort and
hope kardec got up from his armchair open the window looked out on the street
below seeing the men and women and children old people passing by he
contemplated this this remarkable man then began to breathe deeply
and before he returned to his desk to pick up his pen to continue this work
that had been placed in his hands by the superior spirits
he took his handkerchief and wiped a tear from his eyes Kardec professor
Raphael felt renewal and encouragement which is something that all of us should
feel every time we touch we read we here within the spiritus literature within
words of hope reflection encouragement this is our tribute to an amazing spirit
thank you kardec
you
