Waching daily Nov 2 2018

Greetings space fans. In October 2018 NASA announced that the Kepler

spacecraft, which revolutionized our understanding of planets orbiting other

stars, had reached the end of its mission. Now, I spent years on Star Trek exploring

imaginary worlds, but Kepler made exoplanets, lots of exoplanets, real to us.

Kepler searched the skies for nine wonderful years discovering and

confirming thousands of exoplanets. As a fitting farewell here is a quote from

the spacecraft's namesake: 17th century astronomer Johannes Kepler.

"We ought not to ask why the human mind troubles to fathom the secrets of the heavens.

The diversity of the phenomena of nature is so great and the treasures hidden in the heavens so rich

precisely in order that the human mind shall never be lacking in fresh nourishment."

Farewell, Kepler. And from all of us at

the Planetary Society, thank you and congratulations to the Kepler mission team.

See you next time on the Planetary Post.

October Wrap Up Pt. 1 | 2018 | Kendra Winchester - Duration: 9:24.

Hi guys! Kendra here! So I decided to talk to you about some of the books that

I have read that didn't qualify for the award, the Reading Women Award.

Dylan over their with squeaky toy just so you know, and there's also people

running around and doing work outside. So we're just gonna press on, through clouds and

everything and talk about books. I have some great books to talk to you about, so

first up is THE CITY OF GHOSTS by Victoria Schwab. She wrote the Darker

Shades of Magic trilogy under her adult fantasy name V.E. Schwab, but she writes

some really interesting books. And her strength is in her world building, and

THE CITY OF GHOSTS is no different. There's a girl from America and her

parents have gotten this contract for a TV show when they travel around the

world inspecting really haunted places so they go to Scotland to Edinburgh, and

then they inspect different things. Only what they don't know is that their

daughter actually can see ghosts, and she actually has a ghost familiar who's her

best friend who no one else can see. So she goes to Scotland her parents, and

it's like her figuring out kind of like the first in a series book . . . it's a first book

in a series kind of thing, where everything's kind of set up, the world

building is a set up; she learns kind of who she is, and I feel like if

you binge read a lot of these books . . . Maybe it's just the fact that it was really

short, but I felt like it was a little unfinished or that was an introduction.

Because it's just the first in a series, so I would really like to see where this

goes. Obviously be picking up more in this series, so if you haven't checked

out THE CITY OF GHOSTS, it's definitely the perfect time of year, at least right

now where I am. It's like before Halloween, so it's perfect for that

spooky time of year, and I really enjoyed listening to it. The next one I have is

THE CREEPING SHADOW by Jonathan Stroud and THE EMPTY GRAVE by Jonathan Stroud.

These are books four and five in his Lockwood & Co series. Now you guys

know I love the Bartemaeus Trilogy. I think that's phenomenal,

but I hadn't liked his standalone novel in between the bottom age trilogy and

this series. So I'm so happy that he came back with the SCREAMING STAIRCASE,

and it's different. But it's similar in that it's another London. So in the

Bartemaeus Trilogy, it's a London where demons give magicians the power to

control Parliament, and they run all everything. And in this London, there is

what's called "The Problem," and it's the fact that ghosts can now come out in the open,

and they touch people. Only kids can see them, so there are these kids, like ghost

capturing kind of companies. And they run around.

Well, Lockwood & Co is the only one that's just kids. They don't have adults

oversight. And so we have a female protagonist Lucy who joins Lockwood & Co

after this stuff happens with her old job. And so begins the series. It's really

great. I think it's really creepy. There is this one . . . They have usually in

the beginning of each book, there's like this the setup where almost, like, where you

you enter the movie on an intense scene where you get the idea, where you're

meeting all the characters while they're doing their main job. And then some

random person comes in and gives them a new job. And the whole movie starts that

kind of thing. Well, he does that with these books, but the jobs that they do in the

beginning of the books are really creepy. And the first one in the fourth book was

a man who was a cannibal, and the ghosts have sources. And his was like this jar

of teeth, and they could hear him. And Lucy's special thing is that she can

hear ghost; Lockwood can see ghosts. Like, they have a higher instinct for it or

talent for that or whatever. And so she can hear, like, chomping teeth—ah!

So creepy. And I would listen to these before bed, so I really enjoyed these

books. And I think they're a great series. They're a lot of fun. The dialogue

with this ghost and a jar thing is perfect.

Lucy is really just kick butt protagonist, and she is so driven. And I love her as a

character. If you have not read these, that probably did not make sense, but

that's fine. It's fine. Just start with THE SCREAMING STAIRCASE and just listen

to them or read them all the way through and you will enjoy it. Another

book that I listened to is John Carreyrou's BAD BLOOD. And this is about Theronos,

which is the company that Elizabeth—I think, Holmes—was the CEO of and started,

and she had the idea that with a few pricks of blood, she could scan all

of these things, like diseases and test your blood for all of these different

things that normally require lots of vials of blood in different machines. The

only problem was when she started the company, she was like nineteen, twenty, and

had no background in medical devices or anything really that you would need to

be able to invent something like that. And it's just how, you know, the company

was, now is under charges of fraud and all of this kind of stuff. It is a

wild ride how she was able to keep everything a secret and no one ever

figured out. Like, this is just an insane story. I know where everyone's talking

about this and singing the Taylor Swift song and all this kind of stuff, but I

feel like it definitely lived up to the hype for me. And I cannot believe that

everyone missed this. And I mean, everyone was so excited to have a female CEO in

Silicon Valley. I was very happy to have one in Silicon Valley. But she was not, is

not a great person. So we need more women in Silicon Valley, so we're not hanging

all of our hopes on one very faulty person. But if you haven't read this book,

it's really a great piece of journalism, so excited that I read it. I definitely

recommend it. Now look, I'm going to talk about is actually a former winner of the

Reading Women Award, and you can't win it twice because we promote your books

basically for the rest of your life—long story. So what book I did read is Rebecca

Traister's GOOD AND MADE: THE REVOLUTIONARY POWER OF WOMEN'S ANGER

One of the things that I really love about Rebecca Traister is that she has such

an intersectional focus on feminism and gives credit where credit is due.

A lot of the African American women and their activism and how women of color,

particularly black women, have been pushing feminism forward throughout

history is noted and praised as it should be in this book. And I feel like a

lot of feminist writers who are white miss that, and they don't give

credit where credit is due. So I'm so happy that she does that, and she takes a

lot of time doing that and she criticizes different white feminist

groups. And anyway, so I get nervous sometimes when I go into books like this.

It's like, are they gonna get it right? Are they gonna screw up? Are they actually gonna give

credit to the people who deserve it? And she does a great job with that,

so that's amazing. And I appreciate that I'm glad that she did her job, but she

did her job very well. Rebecca Traister writes about feminism

in such a vibrant and concrete way where she gives you illustrations so that

you understand what she's talking about with the terms that she's using and the

topics that she's talking about. She explains complicated ideas so clearly.

It's one of the things I love about Rebecca Traister. If you don't follow her on

Twitter, please do so. She writes so many amazing journalistic

pieces on women's rights and feminism and politics. And she does an amazing job,

so definitely check out GOOD AND MAD by Rebecca Traister. Also, we have to once

again look at these amazing end papers of signs for the women's March. Just, uh,

yes! She also wrote, of course, ALL THE

SINGLELADIE, which won the Reading Women Award, the very first nonfiction Reading

Women Award. And that's also amazing. I have not read, I think it's BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY

or something. It's her reflections after Hillary did not win the Democratic

nomination in . . . What was that? 2008? Was it that far ago? Whenever that was.

A long time ago in a land far far away at this point. [laughs]

It was just, it was just really good. This is amazing. It's so amazing. I feel so

validated as a woman, as an angry woman, by reading this book. Yes,

go forth. But yeah, those are some books that I read in the first part of October.

I will be back and in the middle of November to tell you the second part of

the books that I read for October that weren't part of the award. And, yeah, I

guess that's it, and I will talk to you guys later. But first, tell me what you

guys are reading, what did you read in October. Did you read any spooky things

for Halloween? Tell me all the things down in the

comments below. As always you can find all the books I've mentioned today in

the show notes with links so you can go find better descriptions of them than I

have given you today. Because I'm sure you all need those. Anyway,

I will talk to you later—bye!

Prince Harry Snaps Gorgeous Photo Of Pregnant Meghan - Duration: 3:28.

Prince Harry has proven himself to be a decent photographer … and his wife, Meghan Markle,

to be one heck of a model.

On November 1st, 2018, Kensington Palace shared a photo on Instagram of the Duchess of Sussex

holding her baby bump while standing beside an enormous Redwood tree.

The Hollywood Gossip reported that the picture was taken at the Redwoods Treewalk in Rotorua,

New Zealand.

According to the post's caption, Harry took the photo himself, as "The Duke of Sussex"

was credited next to a camera emoji.

ABC News reported that the photo was taken on the last day of Harry and Meghan's 16-day

tour of the countries Australia, Fiji, Tonga, and New Zealand.

Besides the surprising photography credit, the Instagram post's caption also featured

a sweet message from Harry and Meghan to the people of New Zealand.

"Thank you New Zealand for the most wonderful last week of our tour.

It has been a privilege to meet so many friendly Kiwis.

[...] We leave feeling inspired and reminded of how every single one of us can make a difference."

Beneath their message was an inspirational quote by New Zealand's famous suffragette

Kate Sheppard, who also graces the country's ten dollar bill:

"The rain that refreshes the parched ground, is made up of single drops."

As noted by ABC, New Zealand was the first country to allow women to vote.

At an event celebrating the 125th anniversary of women's suffrage in the nation, Meghan

gave a well-received speech on her 14th day of the tour.

"The achievements of the women of New Zealand, who campaigned for their right to vote and

were the first in the world to achieve it, are universally admired."

Markle went on to say that suffrage is a "human right" of the utmost importance, telling the

crowd,

"Suffrage is not simply about the right to vote, but also about what that represents.

The basic and fundamental human right of being able to participate in the choices for your

future and that of your community."

In the Instagram photo shared by Kensington Palace, it appears that Harry and Meghan had

a moment alone while walking through the New Zealand forest.

But just how were they able to have some time to themselves without their security detail

present?

Well, according to reporter Omid Scobie, who was with the royal couple on this excursion,

Harry and Meghan chose to walk far enough ahead of their security that they would have

at least a little bit of time in the woods alone, or as alone as a Duke and Duchess can

be during such a high-profile public appearance.

And while Harry could likely get his hands on any photography equipment he could ever

want, he reportedly used his iPhone to take the beautiful photo of Meghan.

Though it's not exactly common for members of the royal family to share their own photos

on social media, it has been done before.

Just days before Kensington Palace shared Harry's stunning photo of Meghan, the palace

posted a black-and-white picture of Harry speaking on stage at the 2018 Invictus Games

in Sydney, Australia, taken by none other than Meghan, as noted in the caption.

Hopefully this means that we can expect more photos taken by the royals themselves on Kensington

Palace's social media accounts, especially since Meghan and Harry have a little one on

the way, due in the spring of 2019.

Before embarking on their four-country tour, the royal couple, who married in May 2018,

announced to the world that they were expecting their first child.

ABC News reports that Harry told a fan during his whirlwind down under tour that he hopes

it's a girl.

With Harry and Meghan both clearly interested in sharing bits and pieces of their lives

with the public themselves, maybe we'll get to see some candid baby pictures taken by

them in the future!

Width and length of this MDF will be in the description

From the video he has this little hole no more

But, no problem, you're going to need cds.

I'll mark it on the back of the CDs

1 centimeter at the tip of it

And on the other side 2 inches and a half then I'll cut

The pieces of 2 centimeters and a half

I'll stick it on the MDF by putting your tips out

And the smallest to the inside

I also cut a small piece of DVD in sheet form

And this one will be stuck in the middle of this flower

I will use the tek - bond to paste all the CDs

Already that part red that goes in the middle that is the DVD`s

I'll stick with the cascorez glue

I cut some fine thin strips of EVA in silver color

And those will be the stems of these flowers

To make the collage of EVA I

I used the glue cascorez

Now I'm going to make a bow tie for those flowers.

Also using a strip of EVA only that a little wider

And I'll glue with the tek-bond glue

Now I'm going to use some 3D glue in the golden color

just to make a detail here in this loop

3D glue I'm going to make the shading of the stem and flowers

remembering that this same procedure you can

Also do with the black ink and the pinch

on DVD I used 3D glue with golden glitter

And the hole that was here I decided to make a heart.

And all those other parts I also used this 3D glue

Former Polluter From Monsanto Nominated To Head Environmental Agency - Duration: 3:40.

The former Monsanto executive has been nominated to be the new head of the Department of Fish

and Wildlife.

Really?

If approved, this former Monsanto employee is gonna be making decisions on a daily basis,

gonna affect our environment, gonna affect endangered species.

Look, Monsanto probably has done more to deplete endangered species than any company I can

think of.

So this woman has been hired, I think the big push here, well she's minority, she's

an African American that's been hired to take this job.

Well the problem is she has no, she has zero experience in anything that would qualify

her to do this.

She's a lawyer, and she's a molecular genetic scientist.

Has never worked in wildlife at all.

When you read this, did you get the same reaction I did?

Trying to look like "Gee, I'm putting an African American woman up front, and I'm okay."

Well you know and here's the thing too, you pointed out well she got that molecular geneticist

degree, a law degree, those are great credentials.

Unfortunately, for the Fish and Wildlife Service, there's actually a rule that says you have

to have experience and fish and wildlife, and the only experience that she has from

working at Monsanto with fish and wildlife, is killing it and giving the fish and wildlife

tumors and cancer.

We know that from lab studies.

We know it, we know it actually, I know it from documents.

Right.

Actually documents I've reviewed where Monsanto's saying "We're not so sure this Round-up, this

glyphosate we're making isn't killing fishes, is not killing fish and is not affecting wildlife

in a really, really bad way.

And this is where she comes from."

Well it is and you know this is a horrible move by this administration, completely something

that we would expect really, but Monsanto has done a great job of hedging their bets

on both political parties; they've been doing it since they got the EPA back in the nineties,

to reverse their decision about Round-Up causing cancer.

It's because they have so much influence and so much money, they can buy either political

party and get their way and that's what's happened here.

They gave 25,000 to the Inaugural Fund, back in early 2017.

Well they've given a lot more than that.

All right, but that was just to the Inauguration Party.

Right, right, right.

And now, this is their payback.

They get their person at Fish and Wildlife; they get regulations slashed, they're allowed

to run rampant, whatever they want.

They declare that we are the new and improved Trump Administration.

We're bringing in African Americans now, to make decisions.

But this is classic, I think your point, the most, she hasn't been, this isn't final, at

this point.

Right.

She will be.

I mean Senate's not gonna stop her.

Senate will not stop her.

But I think it's so interesting that even, on the books, there's always been, clearly

on the books, that a person who takes this position has got to have extensive experience

in wildlife management.

Yeah.

She has zero.

They're gonna have an exception here, and your call is the same as mine, they will make

the exception.

I thought it was interesting, Ducks Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, came out and said, "Oh, this

is a wonderful selection."

I mean what is that about?

Is it unlimited duck dinners by Christmas?

Or what is that about?

I don't quite understand that connection, but thanks for joining me Farron.

These stories, as I say every week, we see a different angle on what's happening in politics

in this country and most of these stories right now are getting a little freakish.

They are.
