The grassroots fight for biodiversity - Duration: 3:26.
No, this isn't a building site.
Here in the Reppischtal, the Canton of Zurich
is bringing in its big guns in the war against invasive plants
such as Japanese Knotweed,
a shrub that grows amazingly quickly
and crowds out all other plants.
The difficulty with Japanese knotweed is that
its roots extend far into the ground.
So once it's established, you can only really
get rid of it with an excavator.
It goes down to a depth of 3 metres. In this case, we're lucky:
we've dug down 1-1.50 m and have got rid of it,
but in some cases you have to dig down 3 metres.
2 cm of root is all it takes to start a new invasion.
So the excavated roots have to be
taken to a tip. But why all this effort?
They endanger important natural resources,
such as human health and biodiversity.
They also increase the cost of maintenance services
and damage infrastructure.
That's why we're doing this to curb these plants.
Japanese knotweed can also destabilise river banks, for example.
But it's by no means the only problem plant.
This pretty little plant, American goldenrod,
spreads invasively once it arrives,
and crowds out all the other plants.
Whole fields of it have to be pulled out by hand
before it produces seeds.
The Canton of Zurich has been tackling invasive plants
for 20 or 30 years with mixed results.
Now it wants to coordinate a pilot project
over around 40 km2 in Reppischtal
to combat invasive plants.
Coordinating all the different maintenance services responsible
so that everywhere is covered
will be a huge challenge.
Our goal is also to see if this is possible.
The project is being well received by the municipalities in Reppischtal –
and also by Werner Michel, the Mayor of Stallikon.
He has been battling against invasive plants for a long time.
Until recently, this area was full of Himalayan balsam –
beautiful but very destructive.
However, he does see limitations with the pilot project.
On private land you can't just say, "Pull that up!"
We can talk to people and say
"Look, it's a lovely plant,
but it's invasive and should be pulled up –
in autumn or whenever."
"But make sure it doesn't spread
in your own garden or to neighbouring gardens"
Many people like to have cherry laurel in their gardens.
But it can be invasive.
It's already growing in the wild and is being tackled there.
Pro Natura are eagerly awaiting the results
of the four-year pilot project.
But they are sceptical.
We can't rid the world of invasive plants.
We'll never achieve that in Switzerland –
there are too many comings and goings for that.
But it will mean that these non-native and invasive plants
don't crowd out all the indigenous species.
The Canton of Zurich has now definitely declared war
on the 20 worst invasive species in Reppischtal.
