With a rhythm like the waves and the heart beating,
I knit one stitch after the other and one row after the other
at the same time I collect my thoughts and feelings
without the woolen threads, I get lost
but if I can knit one more row and one more, I can find my way home again
through the magic of the threads I take my way through the days and the nights
I live on Gotland, the island of the roses and the fairytales in the Baltic Sea
together with my husband and our children and Watson the cat
Kammebornia is our art project as well as our own kingdom
Kammebornia is about our wish that everyone could live in their own fairytale kingdom in this place we call reality
and it is about our wish that everyone could be the king or the queen in their own life
In the Kammebornia podcast we want to invite you to our world
that is full of thoughts, feelings and discussions
caused through the scent of the coffee and the soft peaceful rhythm of the knitting
Kammebornia podcast is about life in general and knitting in particular
A warm welcome to the 9th episode of the Kammebornia podcast 2017
Today it is autumn and we are up on the mountain behind Visby cathedral
Here we have a view over our medieval town and the Baltic sea
This episode is about the Sewing- and Yarnfestival in Stockholm that we went to
I will also show you some things I have been knitting and I will give you book recommendations
and I will tell you a little about my new pattern that will be released soon
I will also talk about how to handle November
and Dennis and I will talk about the fact that life sometimes feels like a movie
Warm welcome!
It is November and in between autumn and winter
We have been visiting Syfestivalen, the Yarnfestival in Stockholm and we met a lot of lovely people
We did not have much time to look at the yarns, but the people are the most important thing
Hello Pia!
Hi!
How are you?
Do you have to hold that?
Yes, maybe like this. So that the sound will be good.
Hello everybody!
Hello! And welcome! We are sitting on the mountain behind the church here in our beautiful town.
It is the middle of November and the sun is shining and there are still roses in bloom
It is amazing!
And we can wrap ourselves in wool
Yes!
We have been showing you some pictures from the yarnfestival in Stockholm
There were so many lovely meetings with wonderful people!
Yes, many hugs!
Yes, the best thing is all the lovely people and the good energy that comes from it.
But it is also very tiresome to be there
There are so many impressions that it takes time to rest and recover afterwards
Yes, we have to plan for that when we do those kind of things
Did you even have time to buy yarn?
Yes, a little...
I wanted to visit 60 Garner Nord and so I did
Now I have finished my new pair of Shine mittens in the yarn I bought from them
It is a yarn from Jamieson & Smith in the natural colours from the sheep
It is called Supreme Jumper weight natural
I have not blocked them and fastened the threads yet, they just came off the needles.
They are very good for my brown autumn
I also bought theese,
It is also Jamieson & Smith
I will make a Kate Davies beret
It looks good!
That's the yarn from the festival, then we brought home memories and meetings
You did not bring your Riddari today?
No. Why do you ask?
I have just started knitting the yoke
I have to concentrate
Yes, so in our next episode we can show some more
Ella is ahead of me on her Riddari, we have our own knitalong
But I am getting there
I have mostly been working on a secret knitting project that is soon coming out in the light
I can at least show you the yarn
These are the three lovely colours
It is a hand dyed sock yarn by Moods of Colors, called Humble regards from Devon
It is not super wash
Together with moodsofcolors.com, Yarnesty and Wenche Roald, I am hosting a sockalong this autumn
So we are three sock designers and one indie dyer and the project is called #mocsockalong
You can subscribe for the yarn kits by moodsofcolors.com and you can buy the patterns on ravelry
My sock is on its way
My inspiration is from one of our favorite tv-series,
Look at the colours and guess! But you already know...
The colours come from the uniforms on the midwives in Call the midwife
Their dresses are light blue and white and they also wear red cardigans
It is so great! Check out Call the midwife if you have not already!
I have always loved this colour combination
It is a winter sock and the pattern will be released on December the 1st
I call the sock Catch a falling star, which is a favorite song of mine
It is a song sung by Perry Como and it is also played in Call the midwife
You often play it for me
Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket, save it for a rainy day
So, while waiting to see the sock you can listen to the song Catch a falling star
I will show the sock in the next episode
As I have been knitting secret things I do not have so much to show
That's right, how crazy!
But there will be more later on
Today I started to knit a sock in a yarn I have not tried before
It is a very nice and beautiful sock yarn called Mayflower and I got it from my friend Marie at Opalicious
She was in our latest episode
You were laughing a lot
Yes... This is very much like the Zauberball yarn that I have used a lot, I like it
It is nice to knit in this yarn and it looks good
It looks lovely
During November, there is a special offer on this yarn at Opalicious webshop
You can show your bloomers!
But I have them on me!
Oh, typical!
I can not sit here and lift my skirt!
Oh, of course you can see my bloomers!
Ok, so there they were!
Oh, my God!
They are good looking!
Yes, they are, Majas bloomers!
I talked about this pattern in the latest episode
We are having a bloomer riot right now, to stand up and protect indie designers and our right to our patterns
I love Majas pattern, it is so great!
A lot of retro inspiration. I love them!
And they are so nice and warm to have on! And good looking!
The pattern is available for free in Swedish, German, English, Norwegian and Danish at Järbo.
The links are available on the Kammebornia podcast facebook!
You can also check out @majasmanufaktur
I found the pattern of the small hearts in an old retro knitting magazine
Here comes a book recommendation!
This is a new book, in Swedish, hopefully translated later on into English!
It is called Knitting cables and it is by Ivar Asplund, an amazing book!
Ivar is also amazing!
Yes! Ivar is even more amazing than the book!
We met Ivar the last time we were in Stockholm and we were drinking coffee together and we were talking a lot
about knitting and life
he has also been knitting since childhood, just like I have done
I am sure that we are going to have many more lovely moments together with Ivar
Ihave met him before, he works at a very nice yarn shop in Stockholm, called Litet Nystan, at Mariatorget
The book is more than just the patterns, because there are beautiful photos
it is nice to just sit and look at the pictures and turn the pages
Cable patterns
it contains both easy and more difficult projects
I like the first chapter with just pictures for inspiration
then there are the patterns
and at the end there is like an encyclopedia with different cable patterns and swatches
I have knitted a lot of cables, for example sweaters for the children when they were smaller, in different colours
Don't I have one?
Yes, I have made one for you, it is pretty worn out as you have used it a lot
Yes, it is a favorite
During November you will get a discount at bokus.com if you use the code flätor and buy this book
It is a nice Christmas gift!
I have knitted a pair of wrist warmers from the book, they are almost better on you,
they are a bit too big on me
Then I will get them!
They are so soft!
I have knitted them in the luxuary yarn from Opalicious that we talked about in the latest episode
It is cashmere
and I used a pattern from Ivar's book
I held the yarn double to get the right gauge
Talking about wrist warmers - I got a pair as a present from my friend Petra who made me these!
They are lovely!
Perfect for outdoor knitting
I guess that's it
We have this lovely book by Olle Carlsson with a thought for every day and also a question to think about
There is one page for each day
This book is suitable for all ages
There are nice things to reflect upon
Each day has a reflection and a question
It is a comforting book
Don't you think?
Yes and it starts both thoughts and discussions!
We have had a lot of lovely conversations with our children about things from this book
I will read a reflection here
This day, I do my best, life is like a theatre play but without a script
We actually do not have a chance practise or rehearsal
and we never know what the next scene is
if we had to do the right thing all the time, we would have to live our lives backwards
What was the most important moment in your life?
Oh...
This thing about that life feels like a theatre play or a movie... we often talk about that
Yes, we do. It is interesting
If life is a play ar a movie
or a fairytale
or a fairytale, the end is already spoiled
yes, we all know about the end
But there are so many people that seem to have forgotten about that
I think you do not want to think about it
You mean it is to survive?
But maybe it is the other way around?
Yes, I think it is important to be aware of the endness, the finiteness
I do not want to cause any depression, just an awareness
then we can truly appreciate what we have right now and understand the greatness
Life is so precious and we need to think about how we want to manage everything, how do we want to live?
You often say that time is all we have
Many people say that- I don't have time for that or that...
But we actually have time - we just have to decide what to do with it
People are often stressed and they think that things take too long
they want things to go fast
but if you want everything to go so fast you will soon die
Yes, if you just long for the next thing to happen all the time you are actually hurrying to the end
because you miss what is happening right now
But it can also be nice to long for things,
I try to say that I look forward to things, then I do not feel that I will miss what is now
Yes, it is sad if we should miss what is happening right now because we only focus on what is coming
it is not always easy
There was this question in the book, what is your most important moment?
Do you have a moment like that?
No, for me all moments are important
I do not mean that a good thing that happens is not worth something extra,
Of course there are important moments
but I think life is like a flow
Do you understand what I mean?
I understand. I think you are a master in the art of being here and now, you do not get irritated while waiting in a line
But of course you must be allowed to get irritated when you are in a hurry or something
But for me, it is not a help being irritated
I think people can get provoked by you being so calm
For me it is more like, Oh, here I am waiting for something and I am alive
I am so happy to be alive
I feel this gratitude of life when I wake up in the mornings and I want to seize that
oh, look, here are a group of children
And we hear the bells of St Mary
It is nice with children, they are good at being in the present moment
Yes, there is a big difference between children and adults
Why do we change from that when we grow older?
We start to plan and organize
As we go to bed in the evening, we know what we are supposed to do the next day
When I talk about things that i am going to do the next day or the next week - you often tell me that it is like
I have already done it, only in my head but anyway, it is like I have done it already
You have already had it in your process
It is like you do things twice
But does that mean that I do not have to do it - is it enough that I think of doing it?
Maybe
Travels fo example, you can skip many of them
You can have many experiences where you already are
I think I am trying to find a calmness
Don't worry!
It is nice where you are
If you are not in a horrible place, in jail or something
Maybe you want to get away then, but you still have to be present and accept your now
Sometimes people talk about that they are so stressed that they want to go somewhere to breathe
Like, I have to go to the country this weekend to breathe, I am so stressed, I need to get calm
You read that somewhere and started to laugh, because we got this vision of people holding their breath
and then very exhausted got out to be able to breathe
but only for a while, then they had to get back to the city or the office and hold their breath again
Life should not be like that
No! We were laughing, but actually it was not funny.
It is so sad if that it what it feels like
I can understand if it is a struggle to get everything to work, to get money to get food on the table and so on
it can really be a struggle
Yes! I find this very hard, because I am so often worried and feel anxious
Stress gets to me in a negative way
But when you get to the things you worry about, then they are not so bad
The worrying is almost always worse than the thing you worry about
Something like that
I often feel better if I go down to the beach and look at the horizon
That is a good thing
I feel calm there, listening to the waves
I let myself be small in the big universe
I feel surrounded in a good way
close to the creation
problems that seemed very big suddenly turn small, looking at the horizon
they shrink
And many problems shrink when we encounter really hard things, like really big disasters or crises
when life is at stake
Yes, then you really have to figure out what counts
You can use that experience and get very grateful for your life and feel more happiness
I like to sit here with you
Yes, this is a nice place and now it is almost sunset
Are we finished here?
Yes. And the sunset is a big show every night here, like a theatre play you never get tired of
Maybe we all are in a movie!
It is very exciting!
Thank you for a nice conversation!
The autumn winds are still warm and it is soon to be December
November is an easy game for me, it is not even a fight anymore
I love November
That has not always been the case
For many long years I did not like November at all
Back then, I was longing for light all the time, longing for spring and summer
I did not like rain, darkness and cold
Most of my life November has been a curse
But then I thought that if I stop fighting November, if I will feel better. If I go with the darkness instead of against.
I have to accept the things I can not change
So I put down my arms and stopped fighting
I started to light even more candles and fires
Light dwells in the darkness
And it worked. Now I love November!
I have always loved to do the things that are suitable to do in November,
light candles, read books by a fire, drink hot chocolate
knit warm garments, sleep, watch movies
go for windy and rainy walks
and then come indoors and get warm again
for many years I had to work on recovering November
Now, I can even wish that November was longer
it is a great month for rest and contemplation before December comes with all the preparations for Christmas
earlier it felt like a dark, cold and unwelcome cave that I did not know if I would ever escape from
now it feels like a soft arm to rest on
with lots of time and space for reflection and contemplation
of course it is easier to love November when I do not have to get up early, before I am awake and
when it is still dark drive away from my home
and then in the evening come home to a cold and dark house with hungry and tired children
as soon as I stopped doing all those stupid things and begun working at home instead, it got easier
I can sleep in the morning, until I am awake by myself and I can be outdoors if the sun is shining and work
at the computer in the evening instead, I can take care of the daylight
I can adjust to the season and the light
It is so strange that everything in our lives are supposed to be the same all year round, when the conditions
clearly not are the same
