As easily as I might have explained you this plan,
it isn't really that easy.
Don't take it easy.
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Hard Kaur made all of us groove
to the beats of this song in 2007.
While the song was quite a rage among people,
the film went largely unnoticed.
This film which can be ranked among the best thrillers
our country has ever produced
went on to be a commercial failure.
In doing so, we failed Sriram Raghavan,
the undisputed master of thrillers in Bollywood.
For Raghavan, this was also a very personal film.
Johnny Gaddaar was Raghavan's homage
to the films and filmmakers
which have influenced him in some way or the other.
Today we will try to find out all the easter eggs in Johnny Gaddaar
as well as talk about other aspects of the film.
The movie begins with a dedication to Vijay Anand and James Hadley Chase.
Raghavan has referred to them as 'Maestro of Thrillers'.
Within the movie as well,
Raghavan has paid them tribute in the form of characters reading books.
Mini is seen reading R.K Narayan's 'Guide'
which was adapted into an acclaimed movie by Vijay Anand.
Vikram is seen reading a novel by James Hadley Chase
'The Whiff of Money'
This is Raghavan's favourite form of tribute
which is present in his latest movie Badlapur as well.
Yami Gautam's character is seen reading 'Don't Look Now' by Daphne Du Maurier
which was adapted into a movie starring Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie.
The recurring use of red motif in 'Don't look now'
is evident in Johnny Gaddaar as well.
In the poster, Vikram's sunglasses are red
while the rest of the image is black and white.
The promotional video for 'Move Your Body' also follows the same style.
This style of red dabbed over black and white
is homage to Robert Rodriguez's 'Sin City'.
The title sequence which is a montage of various shots from the film
is also edited with lots of red color in it.
The retro music of the title sequence
is Raghavan's love for classic Hindi cinema.
He loves to add references to Bollywood classics in his movies.
In Badlapur, Nawazuddin Siddiqui's character is inspired to try a prison break
after watching Gabbar Singh's prison break in Sholay.
"After spending 20 years in prison,"
"you will lose everything Gabbar"
"There's no prison in this entire world"
"that can hold Gabbar for 20 years."
Likewise in Johnny Gaddaar,
Vikram hatches his ingenious plan after watching Amitabh Bachchan starrer Parwana.
"At 1 a.m, I landed in Nagpur"
"and immediately took a cab to the station."
"To the railway station"
His pseudonym Johnny is also inspired from Vijay Anand's 'Johnny Mera Naam'.
"So your name is Johnny, eh?"
"Now tell me what's your name"
-"Johnny" -"Johnny eh?"
-"Your name?" -"Johnny"
Apart from these Bollywood classics,
Raghavan has also added several references to Hollywood movies.
When Shiva is introduced, he is seen watching Stanley Kubrick's 'Eyes Wide Shut'.
Mini can be seen assembling a 'Titanic' jigsaw puzzle.
The note counting scene is homage to 'Scarface'.
"Wasn't there a similar scene in that film?"
"What was the film?"
"Scarface!"
Vikram has a poster of 'Rocky' on the wall of his apartment.
Sheshadri reiterates a line from 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'.
"It's not the age"
"It's the mileage"
"It's not the years, honey"
"It's the mileage"
The shot where Sheshadri is buried by gang members
is similar to point of view shots
frequently used by Quentin Tarantino in his films.
As is this scene with the camera circling around the table,
which is similar to a scene from another Tarantino film – 'Reservoir Dogs'.
From Vijay Anand to Stanley Kubrick to Amitabh Bachchan
Johnny Gaddaar is loaded with references to favorites of Sriram Raghavan.
It is his quintessential homage to cinema.
In fact, as homage to Sin City
Raghavan initially wanted to make the film in black and white.
But after realizing that it would be too dicey,
he traded it for color while keeping the opening sequence only in black and white.
And that's how the film starts.
The climax of the film is shown to us in black and white.
We see an unknown man getting shot several times from behind
who is revealed to be none other than Vikram at the end of the film.
The black and white scheme and this murder scene
set the mood of the movie
and give an idea to the audience about what to expect from the film.
Similar style is used in the opening sequence of 'Casino Royale'
to set the mood of the movie.
After the murder, the film jumps all the way back to where it all started.
We are introduced to the main characters one by one.
When a character is introduced,
we get to see the face and the name of the character in the same frame.
But when the gang is introduced,
we don't see their faces in the same frame.
Instead, we get to see five fish being prepared for food.
The five fish represent the five members of the gang.
When the fish are smeared with red tandoori masala
it is the director's way of telling us that the gang is about to be embroiled in a bloody tale.
This is a wonderful use of symbolism.
Another instance is this scene.
This is more than just a coin toss scene.
It gives us an insight into a personality trait of Vikram.
When Vikram doesn't get the expected side in the coin toss,
he goes for best of three.
When he still doesn't get the expected outcome,
he goes for best of five.
This establishes that Vikram doesn't let anything or anyone decide his fate.
He is a man who likes to make his own fate.
After the introductions are over, we get this scene
where the gang members are having a discussion around a table.
"Prakash, it is necessary that this deal must be done within three days"
"Or else Kalyan will sell the stuff to someone else."
"What's the situation with rest of you?"
The camera is constantly moving circularly around the table
in tightly composed over-the-shoulder shots.
This style is similar to the opening scene of Quentin Tarantino's 'Reservoir Dogs'
where we see the main characters having a discussion in a restaurant.
"It hurts. It hurts just like it did the first time."
"You see the pain is reminding the fuck machine"
"what it was once like to be a virgin"
"Hence, 'Like a Virgin' "
According to Tarantino, this style is inspired by director Brian DePalma
and is used to create a sense of intimacy between the characters.
In Johnny Gaddaar, this is the first time when we see the gang members together
and it is important to establish that they are well acquainted with each other.
This makes the betrayal by Vikram later on in the film look even more immoral.
It's also at this point in the movie that the main plot is set rolling.
What follows is a bloody tale filled with betrayal and lies,
told through solid writing and editing.
Let's have a look at this scene
which is edited using a combination of jump cuts, reaction shots and freeze frames.

This calls for some wonderful editing.
Freeze frames are used quite a few times in this movie.
Like in this scene...
"Vikram!"
And this scene
where a combination of freeze frames, reaction shots and split screen effect is used to create tension.
We get reaction shots from the 3 characters
which are timed in sync with the background music
and then we get a split screen effect of freeze frames of the reaction shots.
Notice that there's a lot of red color in the frames.
Red is predominantly used in the movie.
There's red during the introduction of all characters.
Vikram often wears a red shirt.
His apartment has got a lot of red in it
the curtains, the bean bag, the furniture.
The briefcase which is used to carry the money is also red.
Red is the color of passion.
Red is the color of betrayal.
Betrayal which happens to be the central theme of the movie.
"Johnny Gaddaar!"
Johnny Gaddaar keeps you on the edge of your seats all the time.
One of the biggest strengths of the movie is unpredictability.
This is not a WHODUNIT movie.
We already know who's the culprit.
The question is - How is he going to get away with it?
The writing is fantastic.
All the characters are meticulously fleshed out
and the actors portraying them have done complete justice to their roles.
The cinematography is wonderful, special mention to the train sequence,

Shankar Ehsaan Loy's music fits in well with the tone of the movie.
All these factors add up to make Johnny Gaddaar a solid nail-biting thriller.
