Liberty Korea Party to decides whether to expel ex-president Park Geun-hye - Duration: 1:39.
Korea's former president Park Geun-hye, now impeached and sitting in jail, is seen as
a liability to the conservative Liberty Korea Party, of which she's a member.
And today the party was set to make a decision on whether she'll be allowed to remain a member
or be officially kicked out.
The party's chairman started a briefing just minutes ago,... saying that he would announce
the decision to the public and the media himself.
We're joined by our National Assembly correspondent Kim Min-ji on the phone.
Min-ji, former president Park -- do we know -- is she in or out?
The Liberty Korea Party has decided to strip former President Park Geun-hye of her party
membership.
Chairman Hong Joon-pyo is holding a presser as we speak.
He has said that they need to cut ties with the ousted president... to start anew and
regain the trust of the people.
( ) In just a matter of minutes,... the Liberty
Korea Party will decide this afternoon and make an official announcement on whether to
strip former President Park Geun-hye of party membership.
The party's leader Hong Joon-pyo is holding a presser as we speak.
It's widely expected that he will decide to expel her,... as he has been at the forefront.
Hong has long said the conservative party needs to start anew and regain the trust of
the people.
The party had earlier demanded in writing that she leave,... but the former president
did not respond during the ten days she had to appeal,... which ended Thursday.
The party's lawmakers met this morning to discuss whether to put the matter to vote,...
but with most of them opposed to a vote,...
Chairman Hong said he will take all circumstances into consideration and make the announcement
himself.
However, some pro-Park members have said they cannot accept Hong deciding alone... and do
want to vote on it.
They say that they will take legal action should he go forward.
(If removed) Park becomes the first ex-president to have been expelled from a party.
The party has been seeking to sever its ties with her due to her tainted image following
the massive power abuse scandal that led to her impeachment.

China confirm talks with S. Korea and Japan for sideline meetings at APEC - Duration: 0:39.
China has revealed that it's in talks with South Korea and Japan to arrange bilateral
summits at the sidelines of the APEC summit in Vietnam next week.
Beijing's vice-foreign minister, Li Baodong, said at a press briefing Friday that many
countries are asking for meetings and that they're still in the process of scheduling.
But specifically he said his ministry is in close consultation with Seoul and Tokyo and
that an announcement will be made soon.
The summit in Vietnam will be attended by the leaders of all 21 APEC member countries
including Moon Jae-in, Donald Trump, Xi Jinping and Shinzo Abe... and the North Korea nuclear
issue is expected to be a main talking point.
