Diana & Steve Boat Scene | Wonder Woman (2017) Movie Clip - Duration: 4:57.

How long until we reach the war?

The war? Which part?

The Western Front in France

is 400 miles long from the Alps to the North Sea.

Where the fighting is the most intense, then.

If you take me there, I'm sure I'll find Ares.

Ares? As in, the God of War?

The God of War is our responsibility. Only an Amazon can defeat him.

With this.

And once I do,

the war will end.

Look, I appreciate your spirit,

but this war is...

It's a great big mess.

And there's not a whole lot you and I can do about that.

I mean, we can get back to London, and try to get to the men who can.

I'm the man who can!

And once I find and destroy Ares,

the German armies will be freed from his influence

and they will be good men again, and the world will be better.

Great.

You'll see.

What are you doing?

Oh, I thought maybe you'd want to

get some sleep.

And what about you? Are you not sleeping?

Does the average man not sleep?

Yes, we sleep. We just don't sleep with, uh...

You don't sleep with women?

No. I mean, I do sleep with... I sleep with...

Yes, I do.

But, out of the, uh,

confines of marriage

it's just...

It's not polite to assume, you know?

"Marriage"?

Marriage. Do you not have that on...

You go before a judge

and you swear to love, honor and cherish each other

until death do you part.

And do they? Love each other till death?

Not very often, no.

Then why do they do it?

I have no idea.

So, you cannot sleep with me unless I marry you.

I will sleep with you, if you want. I'll sleep right there.

There's plenty of room.

- Then, fine, if you don't mind... - No, it's up to you.

I know it's up to me, I'm making the choice. I will come sleep with you.

Okay.

Yeah, just...

Okay.

You know, where I come from, I'm not considered average.

You know, being a spy,

you have to show a certain amount of

vigor.

Have you never met a man before? What about your father?

I had no father.

My mother sculpted me from clay

and I was brought to life by Zeus.

Well, that's neat.

Sorry.

Where I come from,

babies are made differently.

You refer to reproductive biology.

- Yes, yes. - Yeah, I know.

I know all about that.

I mean, I refer to that, and other things.

The pleasures of the flesh.

Do you know about that?

I've read all 12 volumes of Clio's Treatises on Bodily Pleasure.

- All 12, huh? - Mmm-hmm.

Did you bring any of those with you?

You would not enjoy them.

I don't know. Maybe.

No, you wouldn't.

Why not?

They came to the conclusion that men are essential for procreation,

but when it comes to pleasure,

unnecessary.

No, no.

Good night.

Night.

[ENG SUB] [Meeting] The Unit (더 유닛): MelodyDay Yeoeun, Chahee & Yoomin #SUPERBOOT - Duration: 3:21.

Have a melody day!

Hello, we're MelodyDay!

Hello, I'm MelodyDay's leader and main vocalist Yeoeun. Nice to meet you!

Hello, I'm MelodyDay Chahee

Hello~

Hello, I'm Melody's Yoomin. Nice to meet you~

What made you decide to participate in this show?

First of all, there are many things MelodyDay didn't get to show

So we decided on this with the thought of being able to show more through this program

We did have a lot of worries at first

But we couldn't miss out on a good opportunity because of such worries

So we prepared hard and here we are

What were your worries?

My biggest worry was whether I would be able to do well

We worried this might affect us negatively

Because we could be at a disadvantage

We only worked as a team before. And there are many other idols coming on the show...

So somehow...

Afraid you'll be pushed aside?

Yes~

Yes, that can't happen

Because of that, we worried a lot

You said earlier this was a good opportunity. Why do you think that?

Just being able to stand on stage and meet the fans regularly is a good opportunity for us

A chance to do that doesn't come often for us

It's an opportunity to show MelodyDay a bit more on broadcast

So I think it's a great one

Because we really don't promote a lot,

Our fans (??)

But if we're able to come on KBS through this program

The fans would say, "Oh MelodyDay will be on!" and could see us one more time

We could also gain more fans if we get to show our unique colors

So yes~ That's why we decided to come on

🍀 INTEY SHIATSU FOOT MASSAGER REVIEW - BEST FOOT MASSAGER 👈 - Duration: 6:33.

okay so here is a great gift idea

christmas is coming get it for the person who has everything or thinks that they have

everything you want to try it you're envious she's gonna be as my I didn't

talk to massager maybe next time so this is really relaxing I was out doing yard

work for hours today it's a Saturday and my feet were really hurting and they're

starting to feel better already what you think Trixie you want to try

you want your hi today I have a foot massager to show you it's made by Entei

and I've been using it now for a couple of days and it's working great it's

especially great for those who suffer from foot pain such as plantar fasciitis

not sure I pronounced that right but I have been diagnosed with that in the past

it's very painful and I've learned to control it with certain things like not

going barefoot and wearing inserts shoe inserts this is a product that would

make a great gift for Mother's Day Father's Day Christmas birthdays I think

especially great gifts for men and I say that is because they're very hard

to shop for most of them don't like things like fragrances and jewelry so

this is a shiatsu massager with the kneading function it also has optional

heat and air pressure so there's a timer that toggles between ten twenty and

thirty minutes for any of the functions bayoneting I see their offer on and

that's the shiatsu massaging function

the air pressure goes between f1 and f5 to indicate the level of intensity you

can hear it sounds like a blood pressure cuff and this is really

high-tech okay yeah heating heating is either off or on

so there's a lot of options here for if you you want the heat you don't want the

heat the level of air pressure kneading massaging or none lots of options that

you can individualize this is obviously where you put your feet and I'll show

you that in a minute from the other side so I guess then search your feet here

and see oh let's I'll start with the kneading

it's really good I had

a foot massager are some years ago but it was not didn't have this many functions

or just you put your you just set your feet down on top of it and it kind of

massaged it and I think there might have been a heat option but this is much more

effective as I said this is more high-tech and then I can turn on turn off vignetting

and - on the air pressure okay there guys

so it sounds just like an air pressure or blood pressure cuff okay for your arm

and except you can choose the level of intensity you know how when you're

getting a blood pressure taking it feels good for a few seconds and then it gets

too tight but with this you could you could choose between the different levels and

it really it really helps alleviate foot pain

now I'm going to turn on the kneading with the air pressure

so much that you can individualize the heat the it's um it's really relaxing

this is really great to put on your desk if you sit at a desk whether it's at

home or in an office at work because you can kind of have it out of the way just

set your chair you're sitting anyway why not get a foot massage thanks for

watching

is it your turn yeah my feet better

They do feel better!

Arab Jews/Mizrahim: Are you Arab? - Duration: 15:05.

What is your ethnic background?

I am half Moroccan and half Iraqi

Ori Jerusalem

Do you define yourself as a Moroccan, an Iraqi

as Arab?

Not as an Arab

As being Sphardic

Why not Arab?

As Eastern... Why not Arab?

Someone who is Muslim that comes from Iraq

moves to the United States

after two generations, he is still Arab

why are you not?

That is what people outside are asking

Because my nationality is Jewish

before my grandparents and their grandparents were in Iraq

they came from here the Land of Israel

They came from the region of Judah (Jew)

Judah

Yes, thousands of years ago

So that is the nationality that exists

the fact that they went to different countries

doesn't mean that is their nationality

You are what? - Yemenite

Both sides of your family? - Yes

You were born here? - Yes

Your parents were born in Yemen

My father was born in Yemen my mother was born in Israel

and she was from Yemen

Yes, my mother's family

Yoni Petach Tikva

Do you define yourself as Arab?

Do I define myself as Arab?

No

because I was born here

Let's say someone Muslim from Yemen moves to the US

He is an Arab - He is an Arab

If my father was born in Yemen then he would have been an Arab

So why aren't you?

Because I am not I was born...

I am Israeli

So why aren't you an Israeli Arab?

Because I am not

I don't know

Truthfully, I never thought about that

It is something to think about

So you are saying that your parents... those that were born...

they were Arabs

Whoever was born there and grew up with an Arab population

that is what they knew they didn't know anything else

We came here, moved to Israel

I was born in Israel so I am Israeli in every way

I am not an Arab, I am a Jew

Yes, I was born to Jewish parents

What is your ethnic background?

Moroccan and Egyptian

On both sides?

Amnon Kfar Roe

People outside Israel want to know

who sent the question

whether you define yourself as Arab

Do I what?

Define yourself as Arab

Call yourself Arab

No

Why?

Because I was born in Israel

Someone who was born in Egypt that moves to Canada is still Arab

Muslims let's say

Muslims are different

Why different?

It is a "congregation"

You asked about my congregation...

Explain what a congregation is

Explain what congregation is

What does it mean?

Congregation?

A Jew is someone who received the Torah at Mount Sinai

and he is different than someone

that came afterwards and changed the Jewish religion

created a new testament from Judaism

and called itself a new religion

That's what it means

So a Jew remains a Jew

Let's say your grandparents who came from Egypt and Morocco

would they call themselves Arabs or Jews

Jews

Do you know this for sure?

My wife comes from Syria

she was born in Syria

she speaks Arabic

She is a Jew She is a Jew

She calls herself a Jew

not Arab - Right

Is an Arab (Palestinian) that is born in Israel called a Jew?

He is an Arab Israeli

What is your background?

Kurdish and Tunisian

Shira and Yonit Haifa

Yemenite and Libyan

Yemenite I totally see

There is a connection here even Kurds a bit

to Arabs

The question from outside Israel is

why do you as Mizrahim not define yourselves as Arab

Actually the next thing I wanted to say is

"in the end, we are all Arabs"

Really, I always say that

I am less inclined to define myself

Why yes or no?

Because we are Jews

We came from Arab countries

but we are not Arabs

Even in Arab countries, we lived as Jews

Even if you ask Arabs (Palestinians) some will say they are Israeli Arabs

What? - some will say they are Israeli Arabs

But in the end, they say they are Palestinians - in the end

But hold on

You think in Kurdistan and Yemen they said "No, we are Jews, not..."

Of course! They were proud of it

They were proud to be Jews

Those are the stories you hear in your families

Totally

Also

My grandparents didn't like being called Arabs

because they were Jews

They came from Arab countries

that's where they were born

but they didn't like (being called Arabs)

You are half Iraqi, half what?

Maroccan

Do you define yourself as Arab?

No

Roi Beit Lid

Because it is not my nationality

Not my nationality

So what is your nationality?

Israeli

But there are also Israelis here that are Arab (Palestinians)

So what?

Explain

I come from Arab countries

but I am not Arab in my roots

or my nation

What do you mean "your roots"?

My roots are from Iraq and Morocco

and yes, those places are Arab

but my essence is a Jew

My parents are Jews and not Arabs

from Morocco and Baghdad

So I am a Jew

not an Arab Iraqi or Arab Moroccan

Are you Mizrahi by chance?

Half

From where? -Morocco

What's the other side? - American

Ashkenazi? -Yes

Noam Modiin

On your Moroccan side at least

are you an Arab? - No

Why?

There are people who call Mizrahim Arab Jews

Why is it not correct?

I never thought of that I answered you on instinct

So why that instinct?

I don't know

So what is an Arab for you?

Arab is Arab countries

for me

So if I think about it, then yes

But Morocco is not an Arab country

True, it is Maghreb

With all due respect

Also a Jew from Morocco is actually a Jew from Spain (1492)

Not only

Arab culture influences them

A family that came from Spain

absorbed the culture

in the Middle Ages it wasn't called an Arab culture

What did you say about your background?

I am Iraqi, Egyptian and Indonesian

from the sides that are not Indonesian

Do you define yourself as Arab?

No

You come from an Arab place

But my family

were Jews there

I don't think of myself as Arab

Do you think that your grandparents or before

before Zionism

They were Jews

They would consider themselves Jews and not Arabs

Even though they spoke Arabic and everything - Exactly

Omer Kfar Yona

Libya, Lebanon and Syria

Well, I come from Arab countries

my ancestors come from Arab countries

Do I consider myself Arab? No

I consider myself Israeli Jewish

Good question

One way we feel comfortable defining ourselves

in Israeli society

even if you come from Arab countries you don't consider yourself Arab

You consider Arabs your neighbours

the non-Jewish neighbours

So maybe I feel uncomfortable

describing myself as Arab

I will give the idea that because you are at war with the Arab world

It's definitely connected to that

What is your background?

Tunisian and Libyan

Someone Muslim from Tunisia

or Libya

may call himself Arab

So the question from them is why are you not an Arab?

Because I live in the Land of Israel

and I keep the customs of this country

Elad Petach Tikva

I celebrate all the (Jewish) holidays

I live the culture of the country

Unlike Muslims

from the same background in other countries

They are different cutures

different views

Do you think your grandparents those that came from Libya and Tunisia

were considered Arabs back then?

Truthfully

I think yes

Because they didn't live in Israel

But now everyone who comes to live in Israel

brings their views and live here

What is your background?

Tal Krayot

Half Moroccan and half Bulgarian

I am half Tunisian and half Indian

Idan Tel Aviv

From the Moroccan and Tunisian sides

do you define yourselves as Arab?

Do we what?

Define yourselves as Arabs

I don't

in no way

because Moroccans (Jews) originally were Greeks that converted

so not at all

Greeks?

Greeks that converted

That means your roots are in Greece I don't understand

Greece, Italy

Not Jewish you mean?

Your roots are not from Judea?

His roots are Tunisian

the roots of North African Jews is actually converted Greeks

Greek converts

So you are saying that your roots are actually Greek

Not only Greek

either Greece or Italy

true Greek

or Phoenician

or Roman

I think the three together

and you said what?

I know that

the Tunisian Jews that lived in North Africa

are French originally

so that is the reason I don't see myself as Arab

But (some) Tunisian and Moroccan Muslims will say "I am Arab"

I am not Arab

First of all, that is not true

there are many Berber tribes that say they are Berber

or Amazigh

so that is not really true

During the Arab occupations Arab populations did go there

but the Jews were there

the start of conversion (of the Jews) began in the second century AD

that's a fact

there started there the custom of conversion to Judaism

after the exile and before the Bar Kochva revolt

then they started converting

You are saying that they converted from something to Judaism

Well before that...You need to understand the history of that region

When you say "convert" you mean

I can say my mother likely has blood of Spanish exiles (1492)

but at the heart of the family

we are absolutely talking about

Berber roots

from a Berber population

That is originally from Greece - No

Berbers that mixed with Phoenicians and with Greeks

because that was typical of Greek culture

they took on Greek culture

and were also exposed to Judaism

That was a long way to get there

One needs to study the history

When I tell my mother's family this

they explode with annoyance

that telling them

they are converted Greeks

Because they are light skinned and they want to believe they came from Europe

and when I place the facts on the table

that they are actually converted Greeks

meaning that they have no connection to the Jewish people

The Tunisians do have a connection to the Jewish people

genetic tests on them show

that through the male line they are from the tribe of Judea

Judeans that moved to Alexandria

and continued west

But Moroccan's I have a hard time believing...

Actually according to science that is not true

it may be partially true

at least 60-70% of Moroccan (DNA)

is genetically from here (Judea)

At least on the father's line

According to geneticists

It is not me saying this

Arye Deri (Israeli politician) did a genetic test

and of course it was a total deception

why a deception, because it was possible to say what the male line is

and they didn't speak about it in the episode

From what I remember, 6% is Berber

35% southern Europe

but not Greece

a proportion Middle Eastern

and Mediterranean basin

So the Middle Eastern doesn't necessarily mean Jewish

it could be Phoenician

because the Phoenicians settled in North Africa

that explains the Middle Eastern part

but the rest, the majority

is not at all Jewish

He also had a large part

55% if I am not mistaken

of Spanish genes

but it's the women who were Spanish

because his family name is Berber- Deri

it comes from North Africa

So Berber men who are converts to Judaism

and Spanish women who were exiled from Spain

and they married because the men were probably more economically stable

So that is my explanation

But absolutely what they did on Channel 10 was a fraud

because they tried to show

from what nation his paternal line was from

and I am saying, it is absolutely not Jewish

Ariye Deri comes from the city that my grandparents come from

Meknes

They are much lighter skinned than Ariye Deri

and none of them think they are Moroccan

they are totally Berber and Greek

Comprehensive Earth Tectonics and Rock Cycle (Captions Included!) - Duration: 21:33.

Billions of years in the past when the earth was new

there were no rocks.

Earth was a burning hot gooey ball of melted minerals and metals

called magma.

Eventually, as heat drifted into space

Earth's surface cooled.

A thin crust of rock formed over it

like ice over a lake in winter.

The heart of the Earth, it's inner core,

is a solid ball of iron and nickle.

Here, the pressure is so high

it never melts

despite the intense heat of 3,700 degrees Celsius.

The outer core is under less pressure

so it is molten.

This is enclosed by a deep layer of hot rocks

called silicates.

This is the mantle.

And it's 3,000 km thick.

The surface is hard

and forms a solid crust.

If the Earth was a peach,

this crust would be as thin as its skin.

But the Earth's crust is cracked and brittle

like an egg shell.

It's made up of several segments

called tectonic plates.

The plates float on the dense mantle.

Scientists believe that the immense energy of the Earth's inner heat,

sets up convection currents in these rocks,

which move the crustal plates about

but very, very slowly.

I mean, let me just give you an example of this thick viscous flow stuff.

If you take a glass of honey and put it on a pot of warm water

such that it's being heated at the bottom and cooled at the top...

If you just look at it in real time,

it doesn't look like it's moving.

So as you can see, the honey looks

remarkably static.

And then below it, I've added a heat source, which is just

some water -- hot water

so what does our static honey look like

in time-lapse...

But if you add a little more timing to that, then all of a sudden

you can very easily see the convection currents.

And those are the convection currents which are moving around

the tectonic plates.

And these days we directly track that motion

with millimeter precision...

from space.

The common simplified explanation for why tectonic plates are moving,

is that they're carried along on currents in the upper mantle.

Some plates are moving apart.

Some move towards each other.

Other plates just slide past one another.

Converging currents drive plates into each other.

Diverging currents pull them apart.

This is mostly true.

Hot mantle rock rises from the core, and moves along under the crust

until it grows cool and heavy and sinks back down again.

But the plates aren't just passively riding these currents

around like a bunch of suitcases at the baggage claim.

They can't be.

Because some of the plates are moving faster than the currents underneath them.

For example,

the Nazca plate,

a chunk of ocean crust off the west coast of South America,

is cruising eastward, at about 10 cm per year.

while the mantle underneath it, oozes along at just five.

Neither tectonic plates, nor luggage,

can move faster than the belts they're riding on,

unless something else is helping to push or pull them along.

And some of Earth's plates,

it turns out,

are pulling themselves.

When an ocean plate collides with another ocean plate,

or a plate bearing the thick crust of continental land masses,

the thinner of the two plates bends and slides under the other.

As the edge of the sea floor sinks into the mantle,

it pulls on the plate behind it,

the same way a chain dangling further and further off a table

will eventually start to slide.

The bigger the sunken portion of the plate becomes,

the harder in pulls and the faster the remaining plate behind it moves.

What's more,

these chunks of sea floor are actually helping

to drive convection in the mantle beneath them.

Sunken slabs of ocean crust block flowing rock from moving further sideways,

forcing it to turn downwards and sink.

And eventually those slabs get too heavy and break off,

plunging slowly toward the core

and creating a suction force that pulls mantle material along behind them.

The plates are moving very, very slowly.

Less than five centimeters a year.

But over time,

this has added up...

In 1963,

Icelandic fishermen spotted plumes of ash, steam, and lava

shooting out of the sea.

Almost over night,

a new island emerged.

Lava poured out of the earth.

The eruptions didn't stop until four years later.

Within months, birds began to visit, and plants grew.

But what had happened?

At the bottom of the ocean,

two plates of continental crust had slowly moved apart.

Molten rock called magma,

lying below the plates,

oozed up through the cracks.

When it reached the surface,

the magma cooled and solidified,

forming lava.

This gradually built up,

until it broke through the ocean surface, to form an island.

A ridge of lava and mountains has been formed

where the two plates have moved apart.

This runs down the middle of the Atlantic ocean.

These mountains are caused by the collision of two plates of continental crust.

They're called fold mountains

because the layers of different rocks within the Earth's crust,

the strata,

are folded and bent.

Over time,

erosion of the layers can occur at different rates.

producing characteristic jagged rock formations.

There are two kinds of crust:

Continental crust forms the great landmasses of the world.

This is thick.

These rocks are made of ancient lightweight substances like granite.

Some were formed almost 4,000 million years ago.

Oceanic crust,

which lies under the planet's great oceans,

is much thinner.

Oceanic crusts like Basalt,

are heavy and much younger;

one twentieth the age of continental rock.

Volcanoes like Merapi in Indonesia,

are caused by the collision of oceanic and continental plates,

along what is known as a destructive margin.

Over millions of years,

heavier oceanic plate

is being forced down under the lighter continental plate,

creating a trench.

Carrying water and debris with it,

the oceanic plate breaks up under immense pressure.

As it's forced down, it gets hotter and hotter

due to friction,

and because the temperature rises rapidly towards the Earth's center.

Eventually it melts.

and the molten magma rises to form volcanoes some distance from the trench.

Sometimes,

a row of these volcanoes can form an island,

like Java

Millions of years of eruptions,

have made the country very mountainous

and fertile.

These volcanoes release ash and rocks that break down quickly into soil,

producing new supplies of the minerals plants use to grow.

This makes the land very productive.

So what happens within the volcano to make it erupt?

Molten magma from below the Earth's crust,

pushes up into the mountain.

This causes tremors,

and tilt meters can actually detect

how much the mountain is bulging as it fills with magma.

This is thick,

like porridge,

and when it reaches the surface, it solidifies into a hot crumbly plug.

Pressure on the magma builds up and bits fall off all the time.

The plug, or dome, gets too big and top-heavy.

Eventually, it's forced apart.

The liquid rock matter that we see coming out from volcanoes,

is called magma.

When this magma reaches the Earth's surface,

it is known as lava.

The cooling and the solidification of lava at the Earth's surface

result in the formation of extrusive igneous rocks.

They are also known as 'volcanic rocks'.

The cooling and the solidification of magma at a depth within the Earth's crust

result in the formation of intrusive igneous rocks.

So, we have learned that igneous rocks are of two types:

Extrusive igneous rocks,

and intrusive igneous rocks.

It is interesting to know that igneous rocks were the first to be formed.

Some of that original rock formed more than 3 billion years ago,

as Earth was cooling off.

Earth's surface cooled.

A thin crust of rock formed over it, like ice over a lake in winter.

This crust,

made of minerals and metals, cooled from red-hot magma,

was igneous rock.

Igneous rock occurs in many forms.

They vary according to the kind of minerals and metals they're made of,

and how fast they cooled.

Granite cooled slowly under ground over thousands of years.

Obsidian,

which looks like black glass,

cooled quickly.

As did pumice,

which floats in water.

Though varied,

all igneous rock hardened directly from magma.

The second rock of our story,

is sedimentary rock.

Sedimentary rock develops through a long process

that starts with weathering, and ends with lithification.

Weathering breaks down rocks on Earth's surface

through mechanical, chemical, and biological forces.

In mechanical weathering,

heat,

cold,

ice,

wind-blown sand,

and falls,

slowly crack and wear down rocks.

In chemical weathering,

rock dissolves in rain water,

which is slightly acid.

In biological weathering,

plant roots both crack and dissolve rocks.

Weathering occurs slowly,

but old grave stones in cemeteries show what can happen to exposed rock.

Over time,

even huge mountains weather bit by bit,

into sand,

dust,

clay,

and minerals dissolved in water,

and disappear.

200 million years ago,

the Appalachian Mountains were several times their present height.

Where did the mountains go?

They get carried away through erosion.

Wind, and especially water,

moves each bit of mountain rock downhill.

Eventually, eroded rock fills up nearby valleys,

or gets carried away in a river out to sea.

Where rivers flow into the sea, the land either pokes out, or bends inward.

So why do they have innies and outties?

well, an example would be,

during the last ice age,

sea levels fell by over 120 meters.

and rivers cut deeper and deeper valleys to reach the falling seas.

Then, about 18,000 years ago,

warming temperatures began to melt the ice,

and the now rising seas flooded river valleys around the world,

creating giant estuaries

and giving us the 'innie' riddled coast lines we have today.

But when the steady landward march of the seas

finally began to slow about 7,000 years ago,

the coastlines around the mouths of some rivers began to gain back some ground.

The key factor was the sediments that rivers drop

as their currents slow at the entrance to the sea.

Where the sediment supply was big enough and the ocean was calm enough,

the dropped dirt piled up,

eventually forming new land that both lengthened the river and divided it in two.

Dirt would continue to drop out and build up at the mouths of both channels,

splitting the river again,

and again,

and again.

Creating a new lobe of land advancing slowly into the sea.

Wherever they settle, sediments accumulate in layers.

In oceans,

sediment layers may grow higher than our tallest mountains.

Upper sediment layers press down on lower ones.

This helps lithification,

the process that turns sediments into stone.

Sometimes layers get squeezed so hard,

sediment grains get shoved into one another and lock into place.

Other times,

water evaporates from a layer,

and leaves behind minerals that glue together the tightly packed grains.

Either way,

what was once sand, mud, or gravel

becomes sedimentary rock.

Depending on how it formed,

sedimentary rock may be quite hard,

or rather weak and crumbly.

Sedimentary rock may not stay forever where it settled.

Strong forces within Earth,

sometimes push up rock from the bottom of a valley or an ocean

into spectacular peaks and long mountain chains.

Once sedimentary rock,

or any other kind of rock,

gets uplifted,

it undergoes another cycle of weathering.

This story's third chapter tells about metamorphic rock.

Metamorphic means changed.

Metamorphic rock may start as igneous,

sedimentary,

or even another metamorphic rock.

But then somewhere deep underground gets changed by heat and pressure.

There are two types of metamorphism that occur in nature.

The first type is called contact metamorphism,

and the second is called regional metamorphism.

And so I'm gonna show you how contact metamorphism works.

The reason it's called contact, is because it involves

existing rocks coming into contact with really intense heat,

which is generally provided by lava or magma.

So imagine that one day an intrusion of magma

forces its way up through these layers of rock.

Now,

all of the existing rock are gonna be burned by the heat of the magma.

So all along the edge of this magma,

shown here in orange,

you're gonna have rocks that have been burned by the heat of the magma.

That burning causes them to change

or metamorphosize (metamorphose)

into something new.

So anywhere you see the orange,

you're gonna have some metamorphic rock.

This is caused primarily by heat.

But let's talk about the second type,

regional metamorphism.

Now this one is gonna be more from pressure.

So let's imagine that I have a plate boundary here,

a fault, a crack.

and that these two plates are coming together.

So it's a convergent plate boundary.

Well, as you can imagine, in the middle here,

there's gonna be immense, immense pressure,

and that pressure can cause the rocks trapped in the middle

to become metamorphosized. (metamorphosed)

So all along this boundary, you'll find metamorphic rocks.

Again, this is different from contact in that it's not so much about the heat,

it's more about the pressure.

Let's take a look at what we see here.

This is a typical progression of metamorphism that occurs.

Starting with the sedimentary rock shale,

if you add heat and pressure, it will metamorphosize (metamorphose) to slate.

If you add more heat and pressure it will become phyllite.

More, and it will become schist.

Even more, and it will become the metamorphic rock gneiss.

Take a look at that gneiss sample right there,

you'll notice it has bands of minerals.

That's a result of the intense, intense pressure.

What once were flecks of black minerals, are now stripes or layers of it.

Now,

*inhale*

If you were to take gneiss and add additional heat and pressure,

it would likely melt into magma or lava,

and then it would become an igneous rock.

So gneiss is generally the extent of metamorphism that we see.

Even the beauty of metamorphic rock

cannot protect it from the forces of weathering.

If uncovered,

it too will eventually fall as sediments.

It starts long ago, and continues today,

with lots of fire and ice,

mountain peaks and ocean waves,

and more time than we can imagine.

So these are three rocks,

igneous,

sedimentary,

and metamorphic.

Some are as old as can be,

others, as new as today.

In a way,

they're all the same,

because they all started as hardened magma.

But still,

each is different

because rocks can change over long periods of time,

into rocks of another type.

For instance,

Igneous rocks can be broken down through weathering,

and the pieces can form sedimentary rocks.

Igneous rocks can also change into metamorphic rocks

when exposed to heat and pressure

that change them, but don't melt them completely.

If exposed to high enough heat,

they can melt back into magma,

to form new igneous rocks.

Sedimentary rocks

can break down through weathering to form new sedimentary rocks.

They can also be transformed into metamorphic rocks

through the action of heat and pressure.

If they get hot enough,

they can melt into magma

to form igneous rocks.

Metamorphic rocks can break down to form sedimentary rocks.

They can also be converted into different metamorphic rocks

when exposed to heat and pressure.

Like igneous and sedimentary rocks,

metamorphic rocks can melt into magma

to form new igneous rocks.

As you can see,

the interactions between the three main rock types

can take several different paths.
