Trump's new tariffs rattle close U.S. allies - Duration: 2:47.

The Trump administration continues to have up and down relations with its biggest trading

partner, China, but now it's taken things one major step further,... slapping duties

even on America's closest allies.

The U.S. maybe on the brink of a full-blown trade war with the world.

Won Jung-hwan has the latest.

It looks like the U.S. will soon have a trade war on its hands.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross says a 25-pecent tariff on steel imports and a ten-percent

tariff on aluminum will be imposed on the EU, Canada and Mexico starting at midnight,

Friday, Eastern Standard Time.

Mexico condemned the move immediately, vowing to retaliate with tariffs on 3 billion U.S.

dollars worth of U.S. imports,… including agricultural goods such as corn.

But Ross is saying he's not too worried.

" Well even if the EU does retaliate and even if some others do, it still will remain unlikely

to be as much as one percent on our economy."

Canada and several European countries have responded angrily.

The President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Junker, called the U.S. move unjustified

and said the EU had no choice but to hit back with tariffs on three-point-three billion

dollars' worth of U.S. goods and file a case at the World Trade Organization.

An expert says the rationale for the tarrifs is based on issues in North America.

"Most direct reason for this particular increase in tariffs on Canada, Mexico and EU seems

to be NAFTA negotiation is not going in the direction United States wanted,... and in

addition, America has mid-term election coming up in November and the Republicans seems to

be falling behind so policy towards protectionism maybe design to appeal to people who voted

for Trump in the past."

The tariff announcement has sent a chill through financial markets around the world.

But the expert says South Korea's economy won't be affected much.

"As long as the trade war is limited to steel and aluminum retaliation, for just two industries,..

Korea should be able to weather this particular phase of the trade war without too much problem."

Europe, along with Canada and Mexico, had been granted a temporary waiver back in March.

But Thursday's decision raises concerns that President Trump could further expand the tariffs

to other industries and other allies, including South Korea.

North Korea becomes popular topic in South Korean performing arts scene - Duration: 2:20.

The reconciliatory mood in the peninsula is not only giving hopes for greater exchanges

in the political and economic realm.

The shift from confrontation to cooperation is becoming a strong source of inspiration

to a number of artists in different fields.

Hong Yoo shows us how these talented individuals incorporate North Korea into their work.

Once the two Koreas began improving their relationship after the 2018 Inter-Korean Summit,

North Korea quickly became a popular source of inspiration across South Korea's performing

arts scene.

Genres ranging from traditional music, dance, and musicals started preparing works that

included North Korea in their performances.

One such piece is this North Korean dance performance by Ahn Eun-me.

Ahn, a South Korean modern dancer,... who was made an associated artist of the Theatre

de la Ville in Paris for this year, put her own take on North Korean dance.

"When I started to learn North Korean moves, I thought there were a lot of common characteristics

in the way we dance.

So I was really moved to find out that the dance of the two Koreas meet at some point.

I want my performance to deliver those emotions to the audience.

I also want it to resolve the misunderstanding and barriers between the two Koreas."

"North Korea Dance by Eun-Me Ahn" starts on Friday at the ARKO Arts Theater and runs through

June 3rd.

It will also be performed in Paris in February 2019.

South Korean artists started exploring North Korea when South Korean President Moon Jae-in

pledged more cultural exchanges between the two sides.

He said such exchanges could be a stepping stone toward the unification of the Korean

Peninsula.

Likewise, South Korea's National Gugak Center is planning to accelerate their research of

North Korean music.

"Isn't culture something that shows a cross section of a society and a certain time?

People are always interested in something rare, and at the moment "North Korea" is the

issue grabbing everyone's attention.

Researching North Korean music could reduce the cultural difference between the North

and South,... and hopefully bring us back into one."

As well as Ahn's efforts to bridge the cultural difference between the two Koreas through

dance, South Korean artists hope their performances can satisfy local audiences' rising interest

in North Korea.

First heatwave advisory issued in the south _ 053118 - Duration: 1:50.

Now we turn to our Michelle Park at the weather center for the latest updates.

Michelle, we've just entered the month of June,... and already many places reached their

highest temperature so far this year.

That's right Daniel, some of the southern regions were even issued with the season's

first heatwave advisories.

Under the alert, residents are advised to take extra precautions against the heat.

Although the nation's beaches are now opened, I advise you to refrain from daytime outdoor

activities and drink water frequently tomorrow as well because the mercury is expected to

soar as high as today, along with high levels of fine dust, too.

In the morning, the temperature is still relatively cool,...

Seoul starting off at 18 degrees Celsius, Daegu and Gyeongju a few degrees lower at

17 and 16 degrees, respectively.

The afternoon high in Seoul rises up to 29 degrees, while Gwangju and Busan top out to

31 and 26 degrees.

Readings hotter than seasonal averages are expected to continue for the next couple of

days,... and other than Jeju on Tuesday, the nation will be cloudless skies.

Much progress made with North Korea, but more work remains: Pompeo - Duration: 3:04.

Turning to another important gathering.

This one between key figures from Pyongyang and Washington.

Speaking to reporters after the session, Mike Pompeo expressed confidence that teams from

both sides... preparing for the historic summit are headed in the right direction.

The top diplomat also announced the visiting North Korean official will be meeting with

President Trump soon.

Lee Ji-won has more from the press briefing.

The two-day meeting between the vice-chairman of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party's Central

Committee, Kim Yong-chol, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in New York City came to

an end on Thursday.

After a working dinner the day before, the two began their official high-level talks

Thursday morning.

And at a press briefing in the afternoon, Pompeo said much progress was made not only

in his third round of talks with Kim, but also in meetings at the other venues, namely

Singapore and Panmunjom.

But he also said there remains a great deal of work to do, including convincing the North

that in fact its security is greater without nuclear weapons.

Pompeo also reiterated how he made clear to the regime numerous times that his, President

Trump's and the United States' objective is the complete, verifiable and irreversible

denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

He added that North Korea is also clearly aware of the brighter path Washington is ready

to help Pyongyang take... should it denuclearize.

And Secretary Pompeo said he has faith in the North Korean leader.

"It will take bold leadership from Chairman Kim Jong-un if we are able to seize this once-in-a-lifetime

opportunity to change the course for the world.

President Trump and I believe Chairman Kim is the kind of leader who can make those kinds

of decisions."

Meanwhile, Pompeo announced that Kim will be heading to Washington to deliver to Trump

a personal letter from the North Korean leader.

Kim Yong-chol's visit to New York was made possible by a waiver he was granted... since

he's been the target of U.S. sanctions since 2010 for his role in Pyongyang's nuclear development

and other illicit activites.

Getting a waiver to New York is relatively easy, since the North has a mission there

to the United Nations, but according to State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert, he'll

need another one to go to Washington.

Meanwhile, the U.S. President says he's expecting the official on Friday and that he's looking

forward to seeing what's in the letter, which he believes will be very positive.

But Trump is still tempering expectations that the summit will be fruitful and even

that it'll happen at all.

"I wanted to be meaningful.

It doesn't mean it gets all done at one meeting.

Maybe you have to have a second or third and maybe we'll have none.

But it's in good hands."

Despite Trump's careful words,... there's a great deal of optimism about the possible

North Korea-U.S. summit, raised by the first visit to Washington by a senior North Korean

official in 18 years.

S. Korea's FM briefed by U.S. delegates back from Panmunjom talks - Duration: 0:43.

The nation's top diplomat also met with the U.S. delegation who sat down with their North

Korean counterparts over in Panmunjom.

The team arrived at Seoul's foreign ministry at 5:30 pm local time.

Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-hwa and Sung Kim, a former nuclear negotiator for the U.S. who

led the delegation, exchanged views on the latest developments in the pre-summit talks

between Pyongyang and Washington.

He stressed that there's much work left before the proposed summit, but they are moving in

the right direction.

The U.S. delegation had initially planned to leave after the second round of talks with

the North on Wednesday, but has since extended their stay,... with the White House Press

Secretary Sarah Sanders emphasizing that "their talks will continue."

Favorability rate for N. Korea, U.S. leaders rise among S. Koreans: Gallup - Duration: 0:41.

A poll by Gallup Korea shows a greater number of people here in the nation view Kim Jong-un

and Donald Trump in a more positive light…compared to March.

According to the survey conducted between May 29th and 31st, the favorability rate for

the North Korean leader climbed to 31 percent from 10 percent in the second week of March.

The American president's rating increased to 32 percent from 24 in the same period.

The poll shows more than four out of ten South Koreans in their 40s and 50s expressed favorability

for Kim.

However, a Gallup official pointed out the rate for the regime's leader is expected to

change...

depending on the results of the upcoming Pyongyang-Washington summit.
