Ballistic shields are carried by

police forces to stop or deflect bullets.

They make sense when establishing a perimeter,

approaching a high risk subject or

as a personal shield in a defensive situation.

They do not, however, make sense for

U.S. troops in combat, here's why.

And by the way, in this video I will

use the term ballistic shield to be an all inclusive

term for type 3A rated shields used by law inforcement.

- Whoa.

- A ballistic shield loses its edge on a battlefield,

and more so against an unconventional foe.

First of all, the shield is cumbersome.

The size and weight reduces a rifleman's

speed and mobility, two very important traits

that are not eagerly sacrificed by warriors.

It's always better to dodge a bullet than to block it.

- Whoa.

- A modern troop will already be equipped with

heavy gear, ammo, and a chest full of patriotism.

We don't wanna add more weight to their battle rattle.

The ballistic shield is lightweight

only in the sense that it weighs under 20 pounds.

It just becomes another thing to lug around,

with no comfortable method of carry.

Firefights can sometimes last hours, days,

or in some of the most brutal circumstances, months.

Warriors need to be as lightweight as possible

with the most efficient means of protection,

which is why some people suggest a shield, right?

- Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.

- Unfortunately, the ballistic shield

isn't the right tool for the job.

Unconventional enemies use high caliber

armor piercing rounds, most of what

you would find when fighting terror organizations

would rip right through a ballistic shield.

You just won't find the Islamic state

imposing their twisted ideologies with a nine millimeter.

An improvised explosive device

buried in the ground will effectively

neutralize any benefit of that additional armor.

Finally, most battles don't devolve into a

standoff sealed away from the rest of the city.

- Okay, everybody just calm down.

- Battle tactics involve soundly

defeating the threat which is much different

from the law enforcement objective to protect and serve.

Ballistic shields have earned their place

as a staple for law enforcement

because they have a specific purpose.

Those same shields offer little to

no benefit in military combat.

You know who does use the ballistic shield?

The NASA SWAT team, yeah that's a thing and they're awesome.

- NASA has a SWAT team and they're awesome.

That's right, NASA.

- Click the link below to check them out,

and while you're there leave us a comment and

weigh in on the best tactics you've

seen our troops employ overseas.

THAT'S WHEN YOU SAY I, BRO. I CLAP, I CLAP FOR HIM.

I FEEL LIKE HE DIDN'T EVEN MEAN TO SAY IT, THE WORD

JUST KINDA MANIFESTED ITSELF BECAUSE THAT'S WHERE IT BELONGS.

DEEP WITHIN THE BOSOM OF LIBERATION, RIGHT.

It's a shame that you'll be going home today, but you did beat the World Champions.

A lot of fans from Korea came today, do you have anything to say to them?

Thank you for supporting us.

We played the game thinking about our supporters.

We have no regrets and we hope you'll continue to support us.

Today you earned a hard-fought victory, and you played very well.

As a Korean national player, have you played any games similar to today?

I've never had a game like this.

It wasn't just me who made the saves.

I made the saves with Kim Seunggyu and Kim Jinhyeon.

I made the saves with the Korean people.

High Schoolers Learn Teacher Facts While Complaining About Them - Duration: 2:55.

- Sorry for having 43 tardies.

(laughing)

(pop music)

- I have certain teachers that are cool,

and they'll be like, "Well, do you need help with this?"

And they'll like, hold you after class

and help you out with stuff.

Well others, they don't care.

They're just, "Okay, I'm here to teach,

"get paid, and leave."

- Something I hate about teachers

is that sometimes they give too much homework.

Or they expect a lot but they don't really

give a good lesson.

(pop music)

- On average, how much did teachers spend out of pocket

in 2016 on supplies for the classroom and students?

- I mean, like, in elementary school,

you use like, crayons and markers.

- In high school, it's basically all given to you, I think.

- 260. We usually bought the supplies, so.

- I'd say like the middle, 480.

- Yeah, 480.

- D, 480. - D.

(bell dinging)

- No way. - No.

- I thought that the school gave them everything.

- I have a specific teacher who, she gets there

at 6:00 in the morning for help sessions until 8:00,

and then after school she stays there until 6:00,

so it's like an extra two hours she's there

before and after school.

She's not getting paid for it, either,

but she's just there to make sure us students

are succeeding in her class.

As of 2014, over what percent of public school teachers

in the US work second jobs outside of school?

I know they're not paid a lot.

- C?

- Yeah. - Yeah, so 30%.

- So C, 30%.

- I think 20%.

- A, 20%. - Yeah.

(bell dinging) - That's still a lot, though.

- [Man] Would you guys become teachers?

- Yes. - No.

You? (laughing)

- Yeah.

Almost what percentage of teachers quit within five years

of starting their teaching career?

- My teachers from elementary school,

they were like one and done, so --

- Oh really? - ... they would do a year,

and then they would leave.

- Maybe, C, 20%?

- Yeah. C, 20%. - C, 20%.

(bell dinging) - Wow.

That's a lot.

- Maybe the students are mean to them,

or give 'em a hard time.

- What percent of teachers are affected

by high stress levels on the job?

- C?

- Yes, C, 93%.

- I think it's C, 93%.

Because I'm learning that it's very stressful and expensive.

(bell dinging) - Yeah.

- Yeah, that makes sense.

- It makes me realize how much teachers put in,

and sometimes they don't receive it from the students.

- All you hear is like, "Oh, I hate school.

"I don't wanna do my homework, blah blah blah."

And like, teachers, maybe some of them it's like

their dream job to teach, and to like work in education

and stuff, so it's kind of sad that students

can be rude sometimes.

Like, we should just, you know, wake up and be happy

that we're -- you know.

- Instead of sleeping in class, and disrespecting. So.

(gentle music)

Random Thoughts, In Bed, With Hashtag Zoe! - Duration: 7:09.

whoa hey guys welcome to or random thoughts, in bed, with Hashtag Zoe because we're

in bed with Zoe and by we I mean me because it's just Zoe in bed hey hey

Random Thoughts, In Bed, With Hashtag Zoe!

guys so um by random thoughts I mean that I

definitely googled random thoughts that people have and I'm gonna be discussing

them at reading them off my handy-dandy phone today and keep in mind that this

is mostly because I'm a little bit too lazy to film an actual video but I

definitely didn't wake up like this like I got ready and then got back into bed

this thought I had honestly I have that I didn't even Google this one I do not

understand why when somebody wakes you up like when my parents wake me up they

go Zoe why are you whispering for trying to get me up I'm not gonna hear you

whispering to me if I'm asleep

wouldn't you be like Zoe wake up or like

ASMR Wake up!

this one is actually so funny and I did not realize it until I saw on the

internet but clapping is just hitting yourself when you like something you're

like oh my god like that was a great song you're just like just like wow that

show is lit was lovely early slapping yourself for enjoying something

ow ow ow ow ow ow why do we eat pizza from the middle doesn't make any sense

to me like

if you think about a pizza is a circle right which comes in a square box and

you cut into triangle pieces which I don't understand in the first ones but

okay that's another thing but why do we eat a pizza from the middle of the like

now that I'm thinking about it you eat a sandwich from the middle too if you cut

it in half and you eat it from the middle okay this one I find like on my

phone a lot. I don't really understand it but when you're checking the weather and

it says partly cloudy well if it's partly cloudy then isn't also partly

sunny but sometimes it says partly sunny and I'm like well wouldn't it be partly

cloudy if it was probably sunny because it's partly both of them I'm a

meteorologist so welcome to my weather channel it's partly tired that's why I'm

filming in bed. hello this is good if a kid refuses naptime is

he resisting arrest

let's take a moment to talk about fun size candy bars they're not fun because

having more fun would be eating a bigger candy bar not a smaller candy bar are

you calling being healthy fun it's not oh I really like salads just stop

judging me when people are running or jogging like

in the park or like going to work out we wear like specific workout clothes so

people know that we're not like running from something or running to something

like I thought those really it was a good point because if you're wearing

like athletic gear people are not going oh my god what's wrong oh that girl or

guys on a jog like go you I don't work out in order to like fall asleep a lot

of us don't think about this and I have never thought about this in my life but

it's still random thought that I found on the Internet we have to pretend we're

sleeping in order to follow sleep if that makes sense so like you you don't

just go like you just hit the pillow and just sleep you close your eyes and

pretend you're sleeping and then eventually like you go to sleep but I

didn't think about that before because why would I ever even think about that

but that's a really random thought that I'm not telling a camera while laying in

bed if something is sent by car it's called a shipment but if something is

sent to you by a ship it's called cargo. that one blew my mind

I really really never thought about that but here I am telling my cameras that's

really good really good this one I have thought of so many times why is it W

called the W if it's not actually a W it's a double V because an uppercase W

is a double V but I guess a lowercase W is a W but I do it but it's already

called W because it's did I guess what I'm trying to say is why wouldn't an

uppercase W be called a double V because it's like you know what I mean and then

a W can be the lowercase

I don't even know what I'm talking about anymore so W okay this one's very

interesting because who was the genius who spelled lisp with an S because lisps

are when people can't say their "s's" so what your stomach thinks that all

potatoes are mashed if you're chewing like an actual potato like for example

if you're chewing french fries by the time it gets to stomach

they're already mashed potatoes and not that your stomach actually has a brain

but like you know what I'm talking about

okay I do not understand nowadays especially why is learning cursive

necessary like it's not necessary first of all when I was in fifth grade I never

got my cursive license and everyone else did

it was literally a laminated like piece of paper that had your picture and that

said like I learned cursive or something and I never got that so

and now that I'm in high school I have never had to use cursive in my life so

in your face fifth grade teacher you're watching if money doesn't grow on trees

then why do banks have branches okay can somebody please tell me why vanilla ice

cream is white and like we know vanilla like the flavor vanilla as something

that pertains to white vanilla extract is brown like what like that does not

make sense like can you please explain somebody explain that also please put

your hate comments away this video was totally inspired by Emma Chamberlin so

yes I took her video idea but she's amazing and I feel like we would be good

friends and Emma if you're watching this hey store your video idea call me anyway

guys thank you so much for watching I will see you guys next Wednesday with a

brand new video! Bye!

How Secure Is Your Password? - Duration: 7:31.

And then Sam and Frodo lived happily ever after

The end. BOOM! My novel is complete.

Hi there. Good to see you. My name is Jake Roper and now you might be asking yourself

Jacob, why is half of your hair buzzed? Well that's a great question.

It's not just because I really like the character Rodger from the show, Doug

or Skrillex or any kind of combination of the two.

It's because I'm working on a very secret project

that looks like this. It's gonna be amazing. I'm very excited for it but again it is a secret. You know what else is a secret?

Passwords. And that's what this DONG is all about. Passwords. How secure is your password?

Could you make it better? Maybe?

Probably. Let's find out with some DONGs, things that you can do online now guuuuys. Time that one out, Hannah.

First things first, let's test how secure your password is.

We'll go to howsecureismypassword.net and

we featured this on a DONG before but it is a very useful in this situation.

Let's try the password, michaelstevens.

Oh look at that! It's gonna take about 51 years for a computer to crack but look what happens

if we add a 2.

Now it has gone up from 51 years to 175 thousand years.

And sure Michael Stevens2 is not too difficult to remember but many internet users have

more than one account and some even have close to 100. I mean I have a different password for every account that I have so it kinda gets a little bit difficult.

But if you want to make strong passwords that are different for every account like moi it can be

hard to keep them all together.

That's where a service like LastPass comes in which I personally use and I've been using for years and they were also nice enough to sponsor this episode

and support Vsauce and the DONG.

Now LastPass is great because you don't have to memorize all your passwords.

It stores all of them which is convenient but it also can autofill for you because I always do the thing where I type in a password

and it's not the right one and I keep typing it in until I get locked out of my account. This autofills it because there are plugins for your browser

and there's also an app for your phone which is very nice.

Also it can generate random passwords for you which turn out to just be like a long string of numbers and letters

which is good for security. And you can try LastPass for free for as long as you want. No credit card required.

Link at the top of the description which is very nice.

Now. Passwords. How secure are they really?

Because in 2014 it was estimated that 47% of adults in the US had some personal information stolen.

Now to find out we can use this hash generator.

Hash values are generated by a one-way function so you can get the hash value if you have

the password but not the password with just the hash value.

A variety of these hash-generating algorithms exist

But computerphile has a great video that breaks down how SHA-1, a hash function works.

It has recently been replaced by more secure algorithms but it was widely used for many

years.

These irreversible functions don't mean a weak password will protect you from theft

or fraud though and I'll explain why in a little bit.

For now let's check the strength of yours.

So let's type Michaelstevens into the hash generator.

and this one uses SHA-1 but there are others as well.

Ok so typed in michaelstevens.

Here's our hash value. So let's just copy that.

Now we can go to crackstation and see if it can figure out what our password was from

the hash we copied in.

Figured it out almost immediately.

And that's not a huge surprise because crackstation draws from a 15-billion entry lookup table

Now add 1.5 billion entries for the remaining algorithms.

A lookup table is a storage format that lists passwords next to their corresponding hash

values.

It sounds tedious to create but when you realize that crackstation can decrypt 20 passwords

at once in a matter of seconds it becomes easier to wrap your head around.

And this brings me back to my point about the necessity of a strong password despite

complex hashing algorithms.

If you use a common one like "password" you can be pretty sure that somewhere within

those 16.5 billion entries exists a hash value for password.

So what if we now hash michaelstevens2?

Adding a number helps because it is a very easy form of Salting.

It adds a random string of characters, the salt, to the beginning or end of a password

before it's hashed.

It makes a password easier to crack because you can't use a lookup table since it's

impossible to predict what the salt is.

And if you were hoping for a generator to create a salted password well

we've got you covered

with Salt the Pass.

So let's try one of those easily hackable passwords we used earlier, like password. Great. Now let's copy it and put it into crackstation.

So I know what you're thinking, Jake, $$$michaelstevensfan345#2508 is too hard to remember.

How do I stay safe from ill-intentioned people trying to steal all my stuff?

Easy my friend, with pass phrases, a random collection of words like zebra dance onion parachute.

But what if that isn't random?

I mean for me it probably is because I've never been with all four of those things at the same time

but what if I had?

What if a hacker knows I love all of those things and can guess it?

That's where diceware passphrase comes in.

This method makes sure the words you choose are 100% random.

Each word in the given list corresponds with 5 numbers.

Roll a die five times, write down the digits, and select your first word.

Now keep doing this until you get however many words you want.

If that rolling seems a little too tedious for you then good news there's this dice simulator right here that lets you

click a button for 5 rolls simultaneously.

Please comment your 3 word passphrase below and also whatever salt you added to it.

Now good luck finding it in a lookup table which by the way, may be an efficient strategy

for nefarious people, but the drawback is that it takes up a lot of storage.

For the low-storage hacking solution there's the brute-force method.

You've probably heard of this technique before. It's essentially just trial and error.

The hacker guesses different combinations of passwords until they get the correct one.

And there are programs to make it go faster, like John the Ripper, but brute force is one of

the slowest, most tedious methods.

So we can actually check this out. If we got to betterbuys.com you'll see how quickly your password would be figured

out using brute force.

It's really cool to see how just by adding a few numbers you can increase the time it

takes to hack by a matter of years or millennia or even infinity.

You can also see how it would differ depending on the year and computer processing power.

We're gonna set it to 2018 and

it would take 135 millennia.

Okay now if we make it password was it would take .2 milliseconds.

But if this was the year 1982, it would take 39 jiffies.

Which is fantastic because I love the word jiffy.

A jiffy is an unspecified short period of time.

So when people tell you they'll be back in a jiffy and they don't come back for

years you can call them a liar.

Still waiting for you to come back Michael Stevens. Said you were going to the grocery store and you never came back.

Just left mom and I alone.

Anyway, as technology evolves and hackers become more proficient, cracking passwords

becomes faster and faster.

The point of all of this let me close this we're gonna get a little one on one time.

Point of this isn't to scare you really. One I think it's just kind of cool to see how secure your password is.

And just play around with it.

The other is that security is important on the internet.

I get an email pretty much every day from one of my accounts saying that

someones tried to reset my password. So that's why I think this is very valuable

to investigate. Ya know?

Do it with your friends. Check some passwords.

That's what I do on a nice Friday night. Check for passwords. Wait for dad

to come home and yes. So there's links to the DONGs down in the description

If you wanna check out LastPass which I would highly recommend. I really really like their software.

There's a link down there at the top of the description and

what was that? Yeah. As always

dad come home.

Thanks for watching.

Akateko, the Hanging Red Hand - Japanese Folklore - Duration: 0:46.

Akateko

This literally means the red handed child.

It is not a story about a kid with red hands but it is about a child's hand all bloody

red, just dangling on a tree.

This is a form of yokai that does nothing but creep you out.

The tree would be there like any other tree just being there then the red hand might suddenly

drop or it would be dangling there from the start.

There is not much about this akateko or even how the hand is dangling.

But we do know that it originated from the Aomori perfecture in the city of Hachinohe.
