Say v Tell v Speak v Talk 💬 Simple English Grammar Lesson - Duration: 5:32.

Hi, how are you today? This is Greg from

www.onlinelanguageacademy.com and in this

video I'm going to be answering a

question I received on our Facebook page

and it's about the difference between

tell, say, speak and talk. So let's go!

Right, let's first start by looking at

the difference between say and tell.

This is a really, really common mistake among

language learners, English language

learners, like you and I talk about it

in my free eBook English Quick Fix.

It's one of the 16 steps to take your English

to the next level. Click the e-book.

So, say and tell. Basically the rule is simple,

we say something and we tell someone.

All right? So the verb you need depends on what follows the verb.

So, what follows the verb?

A person, like me, him, her, Andrew,

Peter, or a thing, a phrase, like happy birthday!

I went shopping. You look nice today.

All right, we need to think what follows

the verb and that will tell us which verb we need.

Let's have a look at some

examples and that's really going to help

us see it in context and understand this rule.

Okay, so let's first have a look at some examples with tell:

I've already told you the answer three times.

I've already told you the answer three times.

So the person is you, I've already told you the answer three times.

We can't say, say you,

we can't follow say by a person.

If the next word is a person we need tell.

Let's have a look at another example:

My students tell me, my students tell me

that they love my YouTube channel.

Okay, the person is ME, my students tell me

they love my YouTube channel and if you do too click subscribe.

Third example is:

Katy told Peter that she wanted to eat out.

Katy told Peter, so the person is Peter.

Katy told Peter that she wanted to eat out.

Okay, so if the next word is a person we use tell.

Now let's have a look at some examples with say.

Remember, we follow say with a phrase: Joe said he was coming to the party.

Alright, so the phrase is: he was coming

to the party or he is coming to the party.

Joe said that, Joe said that he was coming to the party.

This is reported speech. Okay, and when we use reported

speech we always use say.

Example two: If you see Jill say hello from me,

if you see Jill say hello from me, say happy birthday from me.

Example three: Rob said it wasn't fair and left the meeting.

Rob said it wasn't fair and left the meeting.

Okay, so again it's a phrase:

it wasn't fair. This is a phrase so we need said.

Now, speak and talk are very similar.

We speak a language. I speak English, I

speak Spanish, I also speak French and I

speak a little bit of Italian, speak a language.

But when we're talking about

communication, all right, speak is... it's

a more formal, it has a more

formal and serious tone. And it also has

more of a one-way communication.

Like I'm speaking to you, okay?

You're not replying to me, but I'm speaking to you.

Talk is more like two-way conversation

So if you are ever in the Chicago area

call me and we can meet for coffee and we

can talk about life, we can talk about

this, we can talk about your studies, we

can talk about whatever you want .

Okay, so talk is more

two-way, speak is more one-way and we

also speak a language, we don't talk a language.

N. Korea vows to continue nuclear weapons development at 'maximum pace' - Duration: 0:48.

North Korea vowed to carry on its nuclear weapons program in its first official response

to the U.S. strategy on the regime.

A North Korean foreign ministry spokesperson issued a statement via its state media outlet,

the Korea Central News Agency.

Directly quoting Washington's new policy of 'maximum pressure and engagement', which was

announced last month, he explained Pyongyang will develop its nuclear weapons at a 'maximum

pace.'

The statement also referred to the recent South Korea-U.S. joint-military drills as

a sign of aggression,... which justify Pyongyang's need for a nuclear arsenal as a deterrence.

The annually held combined exercises between Seoul and Washington are purely defensive

in nature according to the two allies, but North Korea perceives them as a threat, calling

the drills a rehearsal for invasion.

Turkmenistan celebrates "The Day of the Horse" - Duration: 2:41.

Turning our sights to Turkmenistan now.

The country is not only famous for its rich natural resources,... it is also well known

for its beautiful horses.

According to our Kim Hyesung who is in the Central Asian nation, these majestic creatures

are celebrated on a national holiday, the Turkmen Horse Day.

A National emblem, treasure and heritage.

Turkmenistan's national breed of horses, the Akhalteke, are famous for their endurance

and beauty.

"Every year on the last sunday of April, the once nomadic country celebrates the "Turkmen

Horse Day," or "the Day of the Horse," a chance to see the true speed of these powerful animals."

Also nicknamed "heavenly horses," in their coats of black, brown, and gold... the Akhalteke

show off their grace and agility.

"Horses are not horses, this is one of...our part of the family.

In the family, everybody celebrates this birthday or something special day and we care about

horses and we decided before to create the day devoted for the Akhalteke horses."

Akhalteke is not only a family member but also the symbol of the Asian indoor and martial

arts games to be held in Ashgabat this September.

Part of the weekend celebration was an equestrian beauty contest, providing a rare opportunity

for horse lovers around the world to see the Akhalteke up close -- visitors like Hong Ji-jun,

who breeds more than 100 horses in Korea.

"I think to make a new breed or revival of Korean horses take more than a hundred years,

but I start from Jeju horses because this one should have history and culture of Korea

otherwise it doesn't mean anything, so based on Jeju horses, I crossbreed with Lusitnao

from Portuguese, also Akhalteke from Turkmenistan, and also the Warmblut from Germany."

Turkmenistan's love for its native horses has led the state to invest hundreds of millions

of U.S. dollars into creating breeding centers, promoting equestrian sports... and helping

to increase the number of Akhalteke purebreds to over 400.

Their numbers had been devastated in the 1940s by war.

On a beautiful Sunday, the country's unique and rather endearing obsession with horses

is not just for the locals but also a chance for people from around the world to appreciate

the beauty of the Akhalteke.

: China's militarization of South China Sea dropped in ASEAN statement - Duration: 0:34.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN has released a fairly watered down

statement following the end of their big summit in Manila.

ASEAN members dropped any mention of China's militarization of disputed islands in the

South China Sea,... despite several members pushing for it to be included.

Beijing reportedly lobbied the Philippines,... the host nation,... to ensure it wasn't in

the statement.

The statement instead mentioned commitment to international law and reflected some ASEAN

leaders' concerns over recent developments in the area.

I recently learned how to properly edit audio and I feel like a really fancy human being.

So, that's my best shot at it.

Quick update.

I made a call to my geneticist to get an appointment and he can't see me for like nearly 2 or 3 more months.

Which is really frustrating.

So.

I''m going to call every couple of days to see if they have any openings.

And pray that they do.

Then I'm going to call my GP and see if she can like pull any strings because we really

can't wait that long because of how I'm progressing.

And then we're still working on getting everything covered for my wheelchair, and just how to

progress with that.

But I did get my disability car placard so that's really exciting.

It's a weird thing to be excited about, but it means that I don't have to park in Egypt

when I go to the grocery store.

I can park right there next to the doors.

I have been feeling better emotionally, but physically I feel like my body is just been

through the rough stuff.

I took my last final exam so now I have a month off before I start summer classes in

June because I'm an overachiever so I'm doing a couple classes over the summer as well.

You guys are going to be seeing a lot more videos.

I'm going to try and post two times a week.

I'm not going to say days because that'll stress me out.

Rejoice in the day and be glad in it.

and Goldman Sachs. She had the liberals totally buying it too, thinking that she wasn�t

Well, look who�s at it now! Obama, who created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (one

of his MANY agencies, bringing more RED TAPE to our country), supposedly to protect us

from these big banks, etc., is now reportedly going to be paid $400,000.00 by the investment

firm Cantor Fitzgerald, to speak at a lunch at a healthcare conference!

That�s right, Obama will make, during one lunchtime, the same as he made, per year,

as POTUS!

Now, I don�t know about you, but this all sounds PRETTY shady! He�s speaking at a

HEALTHCARE conference, where he�s getting paid BIG BUCKS by an investment firm! Hmmmm�

and his big �accomplishment� as President was Obamacare�. Makes you start to wonder

what�s really going on, doesn�t it!

I think we all know what�s going on! Obamacare is a sham and, but for a couple aspects we

want to keep (probably put in there just to get it done), it�s a FAILURE!
