Penicillin Was Pioneered in Peoria at USDA-ARS Research Lab - Duration: 2:09.
PENICILLIN WAS DISCOVERED IN ENGLAND IN 1928, HOWEVER, THE WORK LEADING TO LARGE SCALE PRODUCTION
ACTUALLY TOOK PLACE IN PEORIA, AND WAS LED BY SCIENTISTS WITH USDA'S AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH
SERVICE.
AS EUROPE AND THE PACIFIC BURNED DURING THE DAWN OF WORLD WAR TWO, THE ARS LAB IN CENTRAL
ILLINOIS HAD NEARLY EVERYTHING IT NEEDED TO BEGIN MASS PENICILLIN PRODUCTION.
EVERYTHING, THAT IS, EXCEPT FOR THE RIGHT FUNGUS STRAIN.
THE FINAL PIECE OF THE PUZZLE ARRVIED UNEXPECTEDLY, ON A PIECE OF AGING FRUIT.
Peterson: In the summer of 1943, an unidentified housewife came to the front door and said,
here – I've got a moldy cantaloupe – will this be useful?
And it turned out that it had THE strain for Penicillin production.
PRIVATE COMPANIES WERE RELUCTANT TO INVEST IN RISKY RESEARCH.
Peterson: If you could guarantee that you'd have a product, then private industry would
be interested.
But you can't guarantee it – this is science.
And so it was very appropriate to come to a government lab, where riskier science can
be done.
MASS PRODUCING PENICILLIN WAS CRITICAL FOR TREATING SERVICE MEMBERS DURING WORLD WAR
TWO. AND SO BEGAN A MEDICAL REVOLUTION TREATING LIFE-THREATENING INFECTIONS AND ILLNESSES
THAT CONTINUE TO THIS DAY.
Kodat: At age three, I contracted Nephritis, a lethal kidney disease.
And only with massive doses of Penicillin did I survive.
So I owe a debt to ARS because of the work they did with Penicillin.
THE ORIGINAL PENICILLIN STRAINS ARE STILL HERE IN THE ARS CULTURE COLLECTION, AT THE
NATIONAL CENTER FOR AGRICULTURAL UTILIZATION RESEARCH.
IN PEORIA, ILLINOIS, FOR THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, I'M PAT O'LEARY.

IRKO - VIDEO 30 - Binaural Audio for Virtual Reality program - Duration: 3:44.
hello my name is IRKO welcome to echo
bar studios in North Hollywood
California today I'm wearing headphones
in the control room and you should too
why headphones? well I was hired to do
the audio environment for a virtual
reality set and I'd love for you to hear
some samples of true surround sound and
for that you'll need headphones for
every song that I mix I do a lot of
tests to make sure that it sounds great
on all kinds of different systems from
an audio engineering standpoint virtual
reality means that for once I know what
playback is going to be used to hear my
audio and it's a headphone set enter
binaural audio a binaural recording is
the most immersive way to experience
surround sound. Meet my friend Mike! Get it? The
shape of the head here plays a big role
but most of all there's two microphones
inside of his ears so when the recording
is played back on headphones your brain
is able to decode and position the sounds
360 degrees around you. That's because the
microphones and the headphones are in
the same place so today we're all over
the city
recording binaural sounds! To create a
realistic background noise for the
virtual reality program I tracked a
bunch of different places.
Wanna hear it? Wear your headphones now
so you can experience this elevator in
binaural audio. Please stand clear of the
closing door.
Second floor. Going up.
Okay so what you're hearing right now is
binaural recording so most likely you
hear the plane and the people around me
and everything else so check it out I'm
going to play some music and I'm going
to walk around you okay right in the
front I'm going to walk around you I'm
on your left on your left on your left
and the back now back now I'm on your
right on the right back up in the front
talking about surround sound right?
The focusrite red 4 pre has this cool
thing to where you can connect to
channels and with one knob you can
control both and this is actually really
handy since we recorded a stereo track
with our Mike over here so now
we're moving him into place then we'll go
for the recording. Follow me. Okay so he's gonna be facing
that way and we'll be over there
recording. We tracked this hallway at the
mall an office furniture store a garage
staircase and lastly a car. Headphones on?
check it out
Now I'm mixing the recordings of those
places to generate a background noise
for the VR experience. Okay so the last
thing I got to do now is rerecord these
sounds that Pascal gave, I'm using one
microphone only because it'll be mono
file the sounds will be placed by the VR
engine based on a position of the user

Eugene Volokh: A Nationwide Speech Code for Lawyers? - Duration: 2:34.
The American Bar Association has recently proposed a new rule that would basically be
a nationwide speech code for lawyers.
It explicitly made clear that the speech code would apply not just operations in courtroom,
or in depositions, or in interactions with clients or opposing counsel, but also in professional
activities including Bar Association activities and social activities related to the practice
of law.
So, uh, if, um, a, a lawyer's group puts on a debate about same-sex marriage, or about,
uh, a discrimination based on gender identity, or about, uh, immigration from Muslim countries
or about illegal immigration, uh, and, uh, somebody expresses a view in the process that
the Bar might find to be derogatory, uh, that person, if he's a lawyer, could be subject
to Bar discipline, uh, for engaging in so-called harassment in busi-, in professional activities
or in social activities if people are just talking about this at dinner after a Bar Association
event or talking about this at a, at a dinner at a law firm event or something like that.
The Bar Association is not Congress.
It's not a court.
It can't mandate this rule.
But, it's often quite influential in its proposal, so-called Model Rules of Professional Conduct.
A lot of state bars or state supreme courts just adopt it on the theory that the Bar Association
knows what rules are sensible for members of the Bar.
The American Bar Association is trying to restrict the speech of America's lawyers,
and it's trying to get, uh, state bars and state supreme courts to essentially ban certain
kinds of speech on pain of possibly losing one's Bar license or at the very least, uh,
being, uh, publicly reprimanded or even suspended, something that no lawyer wants to have happen.
Then we have a powerful, powerful chilling effect on lawyer's willingness, uh, to talk
about controversial issues.
And, whether or not you agree with the viewpoints that the Bar Association's rule would end
up suppressing, it's very bad for any profession, but especially for lawyers, uh, to be put
in a position where they're essentially, uh, in danger if they express those opinions in
danger o-of, of losing their ability to make a living.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers - S01E13 - Episode Review - Duration: 4:48.
Welcome to Ranger Reviews, a webseries where we look at episodes of the tv show, Power
Rangers and then discuss it!
Today, we're exploring the thirteenth episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, titled "Peace,
Love and Woe".
We start this episode with a random party being set up at the Youth Center, and the
only part of this that's supposedly to be interesting is that Bulk comes in on a skateboard
and lands headfirst into a cake.
Like within a minute of the episode starting.
I will say, there's a nice moment where Trini is practicing kata and accidentally
kicks Bulk and apologizes.
I will say, Trini is the sweetest member of this team, and realistically, she and Billy
are probably the only ones who truly deserve to be Power Rangers.
Anyways, on the moon, Rita wants the rangers gone again, so she starts yelling at Finster
and Baboo to stop playing with clay and get her Madam Woe.
This scares Baboo for some reason, but no matter, this prologue is over!
At the Youth Center, the five teens hound Billy about who he's bringing to the dance
tonight, and he explains he's doing nerd stuff at home instead, to which Zack offers
to teach him a few moves on the dance floor to a racist background beat.
Billy declines and starts to leave, but as he's exiting, he just straight up walks
into a girl named Marge whose necklace commits suicide from her neck.
They have an awkward interaction where they learn that the two of them are dueling thesauruses,
so they end up discussing how smart they were as children at a table in the Youth Center.
Marge asks if Billy is taking anyone to the dance, and he tells her he's not, and Marge
says she's in the same situation.
The other four obviously leer on before they tell Billy to come over because there's
an emergency with Jason pointing to his communicator.
Billy hustles over before Jason just tells him to go ask Marge out, and I love Billy's
line of "that's your emergency?!"
It's so genuine and nice, and it honestly makes me feel like the five are real friends
for once.
Reality is shattered again though when Marge just stands up and says "I have to go".
Bitch, where?
She ends up asking Billy to the dance because fuck social norms, and they agree to meet
at the park at 4pm beforehand to discuss the weather or something.
Rita calls on Madam Woe who appears to be drying her nails via a hobo fire on a beach
before she just shows up in the Moon Palace.
Rita tells her to go kidnap the Power Ranger that's going to be at the park at 4pm.
Hope there's no one else there.
Marge waits at the park, and she's ambushed by Madam Woe who kidnaps her, but not before
she drops her stupid ass necklace again.
Then Rita is mad that Madam Woe got the wrong person, but like, to be fair, this chick showed
up wearing all blue.
How was she supposed to know?
Why didn't give you a give her a photo of Billy or something?
Billy shows up with flowers, and he finds Marge's necklace before he's surrounded
by Putties.
They pathetic intimidate him by standing around in a circle before he calls for help from
the other four rangers at the Youth Center via his communicator.
They show up, and there's a nice little putty fight in the park.
Billy fills them in before they get in contact with Zordon, who tells them to get to the
Command Center.
There, Zordon lets them know what happened to Marge to which I ask, uhm… if he was
just watching this, why didn't he let the rangers know about it as it was happening?
Why did he just let Billy get ambushed?
Anyways, apparently Madam Woe brings people to her pocket dimension, and the rangers can
combine their five Power Coins together, giving that ranger the power of all five rangers,
and that's how they'll duel Madam Woe.
Another question Zordon: if this is true, why do you have five weaker rangers instead
of just one super strong one with the power of the five Power Coins???
Oh, and Madam Woe's head crystal is apparently source of her power.
Anyways, Billy volunteers, and it's morphin time.
They arrive on the beach before they're taken the other dimension where a great moment
happens with Billy where he just says "hey" to Marge and then does a double take before
they fight Madam Woe.
She breezes through the rangers easily, but they put their powers together, and Billy
peaces out with Madam Woe.
Then one of the coolest one-on-one fights between Billy and Madam Woe occurs.
Madam Woe tosses him around, and he's really struggling.
He ends up barely getting the upperhand, and he the crystal off her head that is now missing
some hair and her hat, and he just crushes the crystal in his hand, freeing the rangers
and Marge.
The other rangers bail on Marge and help Billy, and they put their weapons together before
they blow her shit up.
Bye, girl.
At the Youth Center, the random dance is happening, and Marge gushes over how she thought the
blue ranger had the biggest dick because she's partial to blue.
Billy is stoked about this, but don't worry guys, Bulk and Skull are here in disguise.
Ernie tells them to get the hell out or pay for the cake Bulk rode into.
Bulk pays up by giving him cash from between his toes, and the smell knocks Ernie out into
the new cake.
Then everyone dances.
Yup.
The end.
If you cut out the prologue and the epilogue of this episode, it's the best one yet.
We get the rangers acting like real teenagers, someone close to them gets kidnapped, and
Billy has to prove that he's not just a nerd.
Plus the fights are fantastic, but alas, Bulk and Skull come along and screw it all up.
Oh well, still a solid outing.
Will next time be the same?
Honestly, who knows, but until then, may the power protect you.

Ohm's Law - The Keysight 2-Minute Guru (s2e6) - Duration: 3:56.
So far this season we've talked about
resistance, voltage, and current is now
time to put them all together!
For practical circuits we can relate current
voltage and resistance together using
Ohm's law. Voltage = current x resistance
Now, Ohm's law is an empirical
law, which in "2-Minute Guru" terms means
it works when it works and not when it
doesn't. Take, for example, the Jacob's
Ladder. When the electrodes are close
enough together there's a voltage from
the transformer, there's current between
the electrodes, and there's resistance in
the ionized air. It's roughly going to
follow Ohm's law but when the electrodes
are too far apart
there's voltage, twelve thousand Volts
between the electrodes and there's
resistance in the air but there's no
current flowing. So, this is a case where
it wouldn't follow Ohm's law. For general
circuit analysis Ohm's law works. And
it's pretty straightforward, so we use it.
For more complex and complicated
electrical systems you can use Maxwell's
equations. So, what Ohm's law really means
is that voltage is directly proportional
to both current and resistance and
current and resistance are inversely
proportional to each other. For circuit
design you can fine tune two of the
components to control the third. So I
have a very simple circuit set up with
my oscilloscope's WaveGen and a resistor. We can
see on the oscilloscope that if I increase the voltage
(channel one), then my current is
also going to increase - which is channel
two. And, likewise, if I decrease the
voltage my current is going to decrease, as shown on the oscilloscope.
Resistance is constant, so if voltage
increases current has to increase
according to Ohm's law. And if I decrease
the resistance by adding another
resistor in parallel we should see an
increase in current on the oscilloscope. We have a constant
voltage and sure enough our current has
increased proportionally to the decrease
in resistance. Let's look at a practical
example - lighting an LED. LEDs are super
current sensitive. If you drive too much
current room you're going to break the
component, it's not going to work anymore.
So, using the function generator I'm
going to apply about 5 volts DC. Right
now I'm applying 5.8 V or so.
This is going to drop about 0.7V
and I'm going to use a two hundred
ohm resistor in series with my LED to
limit the current, and this should get me
using Ohm's law about 25 mA of
current through the LED, which is enough
to make it bright enough to see by the
camera, but probably a little more than
we would normally want to drive to an
LED long-term. I'm going to plug in my resistor
and I'm going to connect my LED (long
side is positive) and let's see how much
current we're driving and it looks like
we're driving about 25 mA which is
exactly what Ohm's law tells us we
should be driving. Let's see what happens
if I remove the resistor and drive too
much current through the LED. I'm going
to turn the lights out. So I'm going to
pull the resistor out and plug in my LED.
And, since I'm current limited by my
power supply (constant current mode), I'm going to
crank this up and you can see that my
LED is now dead. It's trying to hang in
there a little bit, but driving that much
current through it killed it.
So, by practically using Ohm's law we can
make sure we don't kill our LEDs.
You didn't die in vain little LED
So, Ohm's law can be super helpful when
you're designing circuits in the real
world. And it applies to almost all of
the electronic circuits that we're using
today. That's all we have time for today

Stories from NerdCon: Nerdfighteria | Part 7 | The Road to Nerdfighteria - Duration: 4:45.
Hi, I'm Molly Dugan.
I live in Spain, but my parents are both American.
I discovered Nerdfighteria after reading The Fault in Our Stars.
Summer of 2014.
My aunt gave it to me as a birthday present.
Then when school started again that fall, my English teacher shows us John Green's
video on Vlogbrothers about the refugee crisis and I recognized John from the photo at the
back of The Fault in Our Stars.
So I checked out the video and went to the YouTube channel, Vlogbrothers, and I was amazed
by all of the educational, and entertaining, and enthusiastic content.
Soon I discovered all the other channels.
SciShow and Crash Course.
And I love Nerdfighteria because it's inclusive and because it promotes knowledge and learning
and education.
And I feel accepted in this community in spite of all my quirks and weirdnesses.
DFTBA I guess.
Hi, my name is Lauren Strainge.
When I was thirteen years old, I read The Fault in Our Stars.
It was the first book I read by John.
And my friend, who is now my boyfriend, suggested that I watch the videos.
So I went from a reader to a viewer, and then
before I knew it I went all the way back to the beginning.
I watched every single video that I'd missed, I caught up and then
decided that I was going to spread it.
I actually did it the same way that I was introduced to it.
I piecemealed with the book.
I was like, "Read this book.
You're going to like it. Don't worry."
And then I was like, "Okay, now watch these videos."
And they were like, "Oh great, this is awesome!"
And I was a history major, so the Crash Course was, like, my cup of tea a hundred percent.
I was like, "Oh this is great!"
And I was in secondary ed, so I was like, "I'm going to use this for my students
and all that kind of stuff, and this is going to be awesome."
And then went through this period of not watching the videos.
I started keeping up, and then I'd peel back.
And then I would go binge and peel, and binge and peel.
And in one of my binging periods, I figured out that I didn't know what I wanted anymore,
and I thought I was adulting but I really wasn't!
And I don't know what I want, and that's terrifying.
Because I wanted to be a teacher since I was a little kid, and I was like,
"Now I don't know what's up!"
I went back was like, "I'm just going to watch a video and I'm going to destress
and do some self care and watch a Vlogbrothers video."
And John looks into the camera and goes, "What do you want?"
And I looked back and went, "Shit.
I don't know! I don't know what I want!"
I paused the video and just sat there and I cried a little.
I was like, "This video will help me figure it out" is what I said to myself.
And I then played it again, and by the end of it, I was like, "You know what?"
I thought of all the phrases that go with being a Nerdfighter.
"Don't forget to be awesome."
"Decrease world suck." Just those kinds of things.
And I was like, "What's a job that I can have that won't let me forget to be awesome?
A job that can help me decrease world suck?"
There is something inside me that wanted more, and I didn't realize it
until I watched that video and I was like, "Oh, okay.
This is it. There's something more to this."
And I'd never been a big part of the Nerdfighteria community.
I was just an onlooker, like, "Oh, look at all these nerds. They're so cool!"
Finding out about NerdCon, I was like, "Okay, I can be a part of the nerd squad!
I can do this, too.
I can come to this and meet these people and bring my Nerdfighter boyfriend and have this
experience with but also meeting all these wonderful people."
I think I got like six business cards from people just like drawing cool things and having
awesome poetry and all that kind of stuff that I can just always be
connected to a Nerdfighter community.
Which was kind of scary for me, because I'm kind of like a
"I like my dorm room" kind of person.
But I loved being able to share with people and talk with people and laugh with people
and not feel pressured to be this persona that you put up with the rest of the world.
It's just like, "I'm weird. You're weird.
Let's be weird!
That's cool. Let's be weird together."
And I'm taking all my collective weirdness and DFTBA and decreasing world suck and...
I changed from wanting to be a history teacher,
and now I'm going to be a civil rights lawyer.
Although it's going to be a lot of work, it's going to be really hard, I know that
I can always touch back to John and Hank and Nerdfighteria
to tell me that I'm doing the right thing.
And that's something that I firmly can stand on.
