GOP growing frustrated with Trump's trade threats

BY ALEXANDER BOLTON

Republican lawmakers are urging President Trump to proceed cautiously on the North American

Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) after he shocked leaders in Canada and Mexico by threatening

to pull out of the 23-year-old accord.

They immediately registered their alarm with the administration after word leaked last

week that Trump was considering an executive order to pull out of the trade pact.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), who has jurisdiction over trade

and customs, said he was troubled by news of the order and raised some concerns,

too, with the administration.

Trump quickly dropped the threat, giving Republicans a sense of whiplash.

I couldnt tell whether that was a strategy or just a miscue inside the White House,

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said of the reversal.

Trump has ratcheted up his trade tactics in recent days, slapping a 20 percent tariff

on softwood lumber imports from Canada and warning that he will not tolerate what he

says is unfair treatment of American dairy imported to Canada.

But the tough talk is making his allies in Congress nervous because Canada and Mexico,

the two other signatories to NAFTA, buy billions of dollars in American goods.

As far as any renegotiation, you have to be careful to make sure youre going to

get a better deal for our farmers who rely on exports, our manufacturers and others,

said Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.), whose home state borders Canada and exports corn and

dry beans to Mexico.

If youre going to go down that road, you better know you can get a better deal,

he added.

GOP senators say worries about trade disputes are running high in their conference.

While they are open to changing NAFTA, especially to strengthen enforcement provisions that

have been largely ignored by U.S. trade officials, the framework of the pact should remain intact,

they say.

Theres a lot of sentiment along those lines, said Sen. John Boozman (R-Ark.),

whose home state exported $1.2 billion to Canada and $837 million to Mexico in 2015,

its two biggest foreign markets.

GOP lawmakers say Trump is playing with fire and warn that billions of dollars in American

exports hang in the balance while global competitors such as China and Brazil wait to pounce on

agricultural markets in North America.

As a Kansan, our state would be very much impacted by the loss of a trading relationship,

the ability to export to Mexico and Canada, said Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.). We need

to make certain our relationship with those countries doesnt deteriorate over a conversation

about renegotiating NAFTA or pulling out.

GOP lawmakers for weeks have been calling on the president to begin showing progress

on negotiating one-on-one trade deals with other countries to make up for his opposition

to multilateral trade deals, like the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which Trump pulled out of after

taking office.

So far they have seen little in the way of results, to their mounting frustration.

The problem as I see it is you have a White House trade council who insists on 24 different

policies and bilateral agreements, said Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), the chairman of

the Senate Agriculture Committee and a member of the Finance panel.

We also have to export things that we grow, he said. Right now we have Russia selling

more wheat than the United States and Brazil finally coming to fruition as a major, major

agricultural exporter, exporting more soybeans than the United States.

We have to reach a better understanding within the administration, he added.

The United States sent $20.5 billion in food products to Canada in 2016, making it the

second-largest agricultural export market. America exported $17.9 billion to Mexico last

year, the third-biggest market.

Pulling out of NAFTA would deal a heavy blow to farmers in agriculture-heavy red states,

GOP senators warn. They say voters in those states played just as important of a role

in electing Trump as blue-collar workers in manufacturing states.

Lawmakers hope the administration will change its tune with major agricultural trading partners

now that the Senate has confirmed Sonny Perdue as secretary of Agriculture.

Trumps pick to serve as U.S. trade representative, Robert Lighthizer, is still pending.

It remains unclear how serious Trump is about leaving NAFTA.

The draft order certainly grabbed the attention of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

and Mexican President Enrique Pea Nieto, but might have been a negotiating ploy.

After dropping the order, Trump praised the U.S. relationship with both countries as very

special and expressed hope of renegotiating a fair deal.

But Republicans in Congress worry that testing those relationships could be dangerous, especially

when foreign competitors, whether it be Russia, Brazil or China, are looking to grab U.S.

market share.

We knock the number two and three countries in the head, you may do lumber a favor but

the retaliation coming back you really have to think these things through with regard

to the law of unintended effects, Roberts said.

Conscious Universities for the New Generation

Living in Alliance with the Earth

When I graduated from high school in 1985, college was the unquestionable next step for

an intelligent, middle-class or upper-middle-class young person.

I entered an elite school not out of any particular ambition, but because the story that surrounded

me said that this is how to do life.

College, and probably further degrees thereafter, was the path to full participation in society.

The problem was that, deep down, I didnt want to fully participate in society.

I sensed a wrongness at the base of things.

As I learned more about the workings of the world, I didnt want to be part of it.

Even the public service paths, that elite education could prepare me for, seemed themselves

to be still part of the same system.

But I didnt know of any alternative to university, or perhaps I wasnt brave enough

to find one.

And besides, at that time I couldnt identify the cause of my lassitude, my passive rebellion,

my lack of motivation.

Now two of my own sons have reached college age, one 18 and one 20, and neither has yet

gone to college.

The nebulous intuition that led my unconscious rebellion has become, for them, an outright

refusal to follow the program. Moreover, they have alternatives that were not on my

radar screen in the 1980s.

Jimi has spent some time in ecological, spiritual, and permaculture programs in the U.S. and

Costa Rica, that prepare people to participate in a future that is not just an extension

of the present, but a different world with different values and different ways of seeing.

Programs like these exist all over the world, yet still, they are scattered and lack a unifying

narrative that might present them as a solid alternative to traditional higher education.

Young people must luck into them or know enough to seek them out.

Wouldnt it be wonderful if this kind of education education in what the planet

needs most right now were more easily accessible?

Teach permaculture Imagine if permaculture practices were taught

in all schools.

Imagine a worldwide archipelago of land-based institutions of learning for people like my

sons; sanctuaries of alternative technologies of earth, mind, matter, and body that are

marginal or absent within conventional universities.

So much of the most exciting work, whether in medicine, agriculture, or social change,

is happening outside academia, invisible to many of the young people who might otherwise

follow them into a career, and lacking the financial support and community of research

that could propel them to the next level.

We need a parallel system of technology development that can guide society as conventional systems

unravel and conventional technologies fail to adequately address our problems.

We need, to use Ken Careys phrase, to establish islands of the future in an ocean of the past.

For reasons I will describe soon, let us call these places Institutes for Technologies of

Reunion.

They have two main functions: research and learning.

What is Technology?

What kind of technology are we talking about here?

The word usually brings to mind things like computers, robots, lasers, nano-scale fabrication,

gene editing, chemical engineering, and electronics.

These we think of as high tech.

All of these share certain characteristics in common.

They depend on a high degree of specialization; they depend on a vast industrial infrastructure

to produce, they are derived from scientific research, and they are based on the application

of energy to manipulate and control matter.

Accordingly, the standard dictionary definition of technology is the application of scientific

knowledge for practical purposes.

These technologies have utterly transformed the world in the last few centuries, but they

are proving incapable of solving the problems we face today, many of which, ironically,

are caused by the very same kind of technology we hope to use to fix them.

Whether it is agricultural chemicals degrading the soil and creating the need for even more

chemicals, or medical interventions causing side effects that require further medical

interventions, technology often becomes a fix in the sense of an addiction; requiring

more technology to manage the results of previous technology.

Were popping pills for symptoms caused by other pills!

On a broader scale, the entire scientific-industrial system has created ecological degradation

and social atomization that we attempt to fix from within the same technological mindset

of quantification, engineering, and control.

It follows the dream of techno-utopia: that if only we could exercise precise control

over every bit of matter; if only we could quantify and label and digitize every object

with its own IP address, then we could manage the world rationally, eliminate uncertainty,

and maximize human wellbeing.

Technologies of Separation vs Technologies of Reunion

On the social level, the same ambition translates into the program of total information awareness,

so that each economic transaction, each social interaction, and all physical movement is

tracked and saved in a database.

Yet it is becoming obvious that despite continuing advances in our ability to control matter

and society, the promise of utopia is receding into the future, and indeed has passed the

event horizon called cynicism.

No longer does anyone believe that material and social engineering is on the verge of

ushering in a perfect world.

For these reasons the failed promise and worsening crisis of technology as we know

it I would like to offer an expanded conception of technology.

The kind of technology described above is but a subset of all technology, a subset Ill

call technologies of separation. These will always have their place, but at the present

historical moment we need to shift our collective will and energy toward a different kind of

technology, which I will call technologies of reunion.

To expand the definition of technology, we can simply return to the original Greek roots

of the word, which means a logos of crafts. Technology is a system of techniques for applying

human will to alter the physical world.

A Transition in Our Narrative

Technology is not just a haphazard collection of techniques.

As a logos of crafts implies, these techniques are interrelated; they grow from

a common logic, a unifying narrative or worldview.

This narrative determines what we consider to be real, possible, and important.

It answers the questions What can we do? What should we do? and How can we

do it?

The technologies of separation that dominate the world today draw from the story of separation,

which includes:

Humans are separate from nature The self as a separate individual

Full selfhood (consciousness, sentience) existing in humans alone

Competition as the defining characteristic of life

Domination and control over the other as the key to wellbeing

That all things are composed of generic, identical building blocks

That to be real is to be measurable and quantifiable That the forces of nature are basically random,

so human progress depends on insulating ourselves from their dangers and harnessing them for

our purposes Linear and reductionistic thinking as the

basis of technology Force-based causality

Human destiny to conquer or transcend nature.

These are the threads of the mythology that has overtaken civilization over the last few

thousand years, and especially the last few centuries.

It is rapidly becoming obsolete though, giving way to a new and ancient story, the Story

of Interbeing.

It holds that: The self is relational at its core

Humans are not separate from nature What we do to the world, we do to ourselves

The basic qualities of a self (e.g. consciousness, intelligence) are ubiquitous and universal;

everything is alive Each being is a holographic mirror of all

Cooperation, sharing, and symbiosis are defining characteristics of life and evolution

Morphic resonance is the primary causal principle Each being has unique and necessary gifts

to give toward the wellbeing and evolution of the whole

Human destiny is to use its unique gifts to serve the health and development of Gaia

Technologies of Reunion draw from the Story of Interbeing and contributes to its emergence

in world civilization.

Each includes the other, the part includes the whole, the inner mirrors the outer.

Technologies of Reunion contribute to the reunion of human and nature, mind and body,

thought and emotion, matter and spirit, modern and ancient, masculine and feminine.

They reunite all that which has been made artificially separate or even placed into

opposition in the civilization of separation.

It is not the erasure of binary opposites, nor is it the dissolution of all boundaries;

rather it is the understanding that each includes the other, that the part includes the whole,

that the inner mirrors the outer.

Examples of Technologies of Reunion

Almost any practice, whether in medicine, agriculture, energy, or education that is

called alternative or holistic exemplifies a technology of reunion.

Here are a few examples to illustrate how these practices draw from the Story of Interbeing.

Regenerative agriculture, for example, no-till organic horticulture.

This practice is motivated, in part, by the understanding that the health of crops and

of people is inseparable from the health of the soil.

It seeks, therefore, to serve the wellbeing of the soil, confident that the health of

one is the health of all.

Secondly, regenerative agriculture sees the soil not as a mere repository of chemical

nutrients, but as a living being possessed of its own kind of intelligence, and as part

of a larger living being that is the entire farm ecosystem.

Therefore, instead of merely imposing a methodological template on a piece of land, the farmer carefully

observes the land until she intimately knows it as a being unto itself, so she can ask,

What does the land want? The relationship is intimate, personal, and unique, irreducible

to any set of quantitative data on soil composition and rainfall distribution.

Homeopathy, based on the realization that every condition of a human being is mirrored

by some material substance.

Self and world are not separate.

Homeopaths believe that introducing the informational signature of that substance into the body

will unlock that disease pattern and bring healing.

Furthermore, the medium for conveying the information signature of a substance is water,

which in homeopathy is understood not as a generic substance defined merely by its chemical

formula, but as capable of holding information and structure (a view supported by recent

scientific thinking as well).

Homeopathy Homeopathy adheres to the priciple that the

self and the world are not separate.

Truth and reconciliation processes.

The Story of Separation says, If I were in the totality of your circumstances biographical,

economic, cultural, etc.

I would not do as you did.

I am better than that. Punitive justice comes from that belief: people do bad things

because they are bad people and therefore must be deterred by threat of punishment.

The Story of Interbeing says the opposite.

It says:

If I were in the totality of your circumstances, my brother, I would have done as you did.

Truth and reconciliation processes change those circumstances.

They come from the belief that if he could only be connected with the full impact of

his actions, he would no longer want to do that.

They rely on the healing power of the truth made visible.

Brutalization depends on a cutoff of empathy, on the dehumanization of the victim.

By sharing their stories to the witnessing of the perpetrators and the surrounding community,

the victims reclaim their full humanity in the eyes of all.

Universal basic income (UBI) and community-based forms of resource sharing.

In the Story of Separation, which says human nature is to maximize rational self-interest,

this is an insane idea.

If everyones basic needs were met, what would compel people to work and contribute

to society?

But if we believe that human nature is to want to contribute to something meaningful,

greater than oneself, UBI and resource sharing becomes a way to support that impulse.

It also validates and supports the kinds of contributions that are hard to quantify, such

as giving loving care to children or old people, making art and music, bringing healing to

land and water in ways that dont increase economic output, and so forth.

So, Technologies of Reunion include material technologies, social technologies, and also

non-material technologies based on a different understanding of what is real.

A partial list might include: mycoremediation of toxic waste, composting toilets and graywater/blackwater

recycling systems, herbal medicine, therapies using psychotropic plants, earth building

techniques, sacred architecture, sound healing, hypnosis and mind/matter techniques, nonviolent

communication, compassionate listening; sociocracy, holocracy and other group decision-making

methods; council processes; restorative circles; family constellation work; tantric sexual

practices, communication with other-than-human beings, nonviolent methods of political direct

action, implosion motors, over-unity energy devices, worker-owned cooperatives and other

forms of economic cooperation, biodynamic agriculture, silvopasture, perennial-based

horticulture, wetlands restoration, Montessori education, Waldorf education, technologies

of voice, dance, and mask, the use of trance and dream states

Mycoremediation Mycoremediationthe process of using fungi

to degrade contaminants in the environment.

In various ways, all of these draw on the new and ancient Story of Interbeing.

What does crystal therapy have to do with composting toilets or attachment parenting?

On a deeper level, they are related because their what and how draws from

the same overarching story.

There is tremendous support for the technologies that have brought us to our present situation,

but little support for the kinds of technologies that are most necessary for our society to

transition into an ecological age.

The technologies of reunion need communities of practice, and they need patronage from

visionary holders of financial wealth and other resources.

Some examples of incubators for technologies of reunion include The Land Institute, devoted

to perennial agriculture, The Farm in Tennessee, which pioneered the renewal of midwifery in

America, Tamera Ecovillage, dedicated to healing human sexuality (as well as water retention

landscapes and peace work), and the Damanhur intentional community in Italy, with its astonishing

experiments in sacred architecture and plant communication.

There are also growing linkages among institutions that are part of this movement, for example,

Numundo and the global network of Ecoversities.

These institutions are each edgy in their own way, and perhaps conventional in other

ways.

Each chooses its areas of exploration in the vast territory of Reunion.

In a sane future on a livable planet, places like these must no longer be radical outliers;

they must be the new normal.

The Starseed Generation

The blatantly new-agey term starseeds just popped into my head to describe the current

generation of young people coming of age today, who do not fit into dominant models of higher

education.

The rewards and threats that bring most people into conformity with the old story do not

sway them.

They cannot be bribed into a normal career.

Therefore, most of what conventional universities offer is unattractive to them: both the curriculum

content and the form in which it is offered.

'Starseeds' Starseeds seek something more than our

dominant models of higher education offer.

Some of these young people muddle through university anyway, engaging themselves in

political activism as an outlet for their passions.

Others, the lucky ones, find new story content in the margins and crannies of their institutions,

provided by professors who are adept at sneaking things under the radar.

Many more drop out of college or refuse to go entirely.

It is not that they are uninterested in learning; it is that what they want to learn is not

easily available.

They are here on earth with a purpose and cannot tolerate spending years of their lives

on something that isnt aligned with that purpose.

When these youth get their first glimpse of permaculture, or gift economics, or herbalism,

or some other technology of reunion, they come alive.

Their eyes light up in recognition: here is what I was looking for.

Or at least, here is a signpost that tells me that what I am looking for is out there

somewhere.

Equally powerful for these young people is to come across others of their tribe; allies

in the purpose of serving the healing of Gaia, and especially elders who model an alternative

life path.

They realize then that they are not crazy and they are not alone.

For a young person to follow this path does take courage, because it is preparation for

a world that does not yet exist, a world that values Technologies of Reunion.

Yet, paradoxically, it will never exist if we dont prepare for it.

The technologies that serve an ecological future also serve the transition to that future.

And, to risk following this path is to make an offering of ones life, and that is a

powerful prayer.

Strange Things That Happen While You Sleep! - Duration: 16:20.

Here are some of the strangest things that could happen while you sleep!

9 - Parasomnia

Broadly speaking, Parasomnia just describes odd sleep behavior.

Under this umbrella of disorders include things such as sleepwalking, sleep talking, restless

leg syndrome, night terrors, and sleep related eating disorders, just to name a few.

Even sleep driving has been reported.

I'd be keeping my keys locked in a drawer if I ever slept drove!

For sleepwalking, we're talking a range of completely safe to absolutely dangerous.

If you're just doing something like, sit up in bed, or maybe walking to the bathroom,

you pretty much have nothing to worry about.

But, there are some instances where people have been known to try and cook in the kitchen,

which is starting to push it.

Some people are EVEN known to operate dangerous power tools or like I mentioned earlier, even

drive a car!

Another type of behavior, Night Terrors, have caused people to get up and run around as

well, except I imagine it's much worse.

People have been known to scream during these horrific episodes and any attempt at calming

someone experiencing a night terror usually just doesn't work.

It's worth noting that nightmares and night terrors are different things.

During a night terror episode, people are known to bolt upright.

Often their eyes will pop open, and they have a seriously terrified look on their face.

They also experience rapid eye movement, which is what helps distinguishes the episode as

being just a regular old nightmare.

In the case of Sleep related eating disorders, people have been known to eat while they sleep.

On the surface this doesn't sound all that bad, but it's not like people are whipping

up nutritious meals during their sleep.

Usually they eat in a very uncontrolled manner, and will even eat inedible things, such as

wood or glue.

Sleep eating disorders are actually pretty rare.

Since the first reported case back in 1955, only a few dozen cases have been reported

since.

8 - Sexsomnia

So we've discussed Parasomnias, and it should be noted that Sexsomnia falls under that broad

category.

But I figured what the h*ll, let's give it it's own entry cuz c'mon, y'all know

you wanted it!

Also known as "sleep sex", Sexsomnia is pretty much what it sounds like.

People doing sexual things while they're sleeping.

As is usually the case with any sort of parasomnia, anyone who engages in sleep sex doesn't

remember doing it.

Research on this bizarre phenomenon is pretty new.

The first real study was done in 1996 at the University of Toronto and the University of

Ottawa…..you know what, I'm surprised it was the Canadians first !!!

It usually involves one person trying to fondle their sleeping partner, though it can also

include someone trying to mast#rbate in their sleep.

Like I said, the person doing this has no clue what's going on, and it usually takes

their partner to recognize it.

So in theory, if you sleep alone, you could be pleasuring yourself while sleep.

Wait…...hold up…..uhhhh…...let's just move on!!

Anyway, as it is with other forms of parasomnia, sleep sex occurs when the brain is caught

in no man's land, somewhere between being awake and asleep.

Doctors aren't 100 percent sure what causes this.

They do know that people who suffer from other sleep disorders are more likely to perform

sleep sex than those who don't.

No surprise there I guess.

Sleep deprivation and excessive drug and alcohol use might also be triggers.

I actually have a super crazy sexsomnia story later for you guys.

Oddly enough, the fact that Sexsomnia is a well accepted sleep disorder, has made it

an excuse used by the defense in a few rape and molestation cases.

Now that's a whole new can of worms.

7 - Exploding Head Syndrome

Have you ever been trying to fall asleep and all of a sudden...BANG!

You hear a loud noise?

But you can't figure out what it was?

Yeah me neither.

But if you did, maybe it's a phenomenon known as Exploding Head Syndrome.

Oddly enough, there doesn't seem to be much of a consensus as to what causes the exploding

sensation.

Doctors have speculated that it can be caused by stress, and that it can occur infrequently,

or on the opposite end, consistently over a number of years.

It's classified as a parasomnia and sleep-related dissociative disorder and is an unusual type

of auditory hallucination which occurs in people who aren't fully awake.

Exploding Head Syndrome has been described as sounding like a bomb, like clashing symbols

or even like a loud bang, such as a gunshot.

The perception of a flashing light is sometimes associated with this odd occurrence.

However, as unpleasant as all of this sounds, don't worry, Exploding Head Syndrome is

a painless endeavor, even if it's weird as h*ll and not actually happening.

6 - Sleep Paralysis

This is pretty much exactly what it sounds like.

Sleep paralysis, if you're unlucky enough to suffer from it, temporarily prevents you

from moving while you sleep and sometimes right after you wake up.

People who suffer from Sleep Paralysis have also reported experiencing intense hallucinations,

often hearing voices, buzzing, hissing, static, and humming noises.

In some cases, you might feel a ton of pressure on your chest and have a hard time breathing.

In really bizarre cases, hallucinations might be so intense that the person will imagine

having extra limbs, or have some sort of out of body experience.

Understandably, lots of people get really scared and start to panic during a sleep paralysis

episode.

I mean, if you can't move or breathe and are under the impression that you're growing

new limbs, I can imagine that isn't exactly like a day at the spa!

The episodes only last for a few seconds or a few minutes tops.

Wait, a few minutes?!

That's a long time to not be able to move!!

The cause of sleep paralysis is often genetic...so you have your grandparents to thank if you're

having issues with sleep paralysis.

5 - Hypnagogic Jerk

You've probably experienced this before.

So you know how sometimes just as you're about to drift off into a nice peaceful sleep,

you're suddenly jolted awake, feeling as though you're falling?

There's actually a scientific reason behind this one.

This sensation is what sleep experts and doctors refer to scientifically as a Hypnagogic Jerk.

I think this is one disorder almost everyone has experienced before.

Actually, according to sleep.org, about 70 percent of the population experience these

involuntary muscle movements, including yours truly.

These jerks are also referred to as "sleep starts".

The root cause of these jerks is actually a bit of a mystery.

Pffft, Shocker, right?

Another thing science can't explain!

There are a few popular theories out there.

One is that it's the result of the body's temperature dropping, along with the heart

rate, breathing and a shift in muscle tone.

The weird sensation you feel is simply your body shifting into sleep mode.

There's also a school of thought that suggests it's a false alarm from your brain.

Because your muscles start to relax, your brain, which is generally pretty smart, misinterprets

this shift to mean that you might actually be falling.

So it's like "Oh sh*t dude wake up!"

And that's when you jerk awake and you're like, "what the f*ck!

Then you roll over and go back to sleep.

So for the most part, Hypnagogic Jerks are pretty much just a mild nuisance.

4 - Bodily changes

I'm sure you've figured this out by yourself.

You need to sleep.

It's really good for you for all sorts of reasons.

When you doze off for the night, your body does some amazing things that help you feel

rejuvenated and rested the next day.

Part of this is due to the changes your body experiences while you sleep.

In the early stages of sleep, your muscles start to relax.

Remember the Hypnagogic Jerk we discussed?

Your brain waves start to slow down and you begin to lose sense of your surroundings,

which are all good things.

Then your eye movement stops and your body temperature begins to drop along with your

heart rate.

As your muscles relax even more, blood flows to the muscles.

This allows your muscle tissues to repair.

Pretty cool, huh?

Then your body starts to produce Human Growth Hormone, an extremely important hormone for

repair on the body.

Unfortunately, as your body gets older, it produces less and less HGH.

Then there's the final stage of sleep, known as the REM cycle, the stage of sleep where

you have very vivid dreams.

REM stands for "rapid eye movement."

And indeed, your eyes dart around like crazy during this cycle.

In this final stage of sleep, your muscles become paralyzed, which is one contributing

factor to sleep paralysis, and people often experience irregular heartbeat and breathing.

While you sleep, your body also does other important things, such as regulate your appetite.

It also is a time to clean house.

The human brain has something called the glymphatic system, which is a mechanism that flushes

out unnecessary information. This system is super active during sleep, largely because

brain cells shrink by 60 percent.

This is based off a study by Maiken Nedergaard at the University of Rochester.

"The restorative nature of sleep appears to be the result of the active clearance of

the by-products of neural activity that accumulate during wakefulness" Nedergaard said.

In other words, your brain needs rest too, and flushing out a bunch of useless information

helps you feel mentally restored as well.

3 - Sleep Talking

Somniloquy.

That's a weird word.

But really, it's just fancy medical jargon for "sleep talk."

We'll make it easy on you and just go with "sleep talk" for the purposes of our discussion.

Sleep talking can be triggered by stress, depression, sleep deprivation, and so on and

so on.

There's also some indications that sleep talking could be genetic.

Most of the time, sleep talking is mostly non sense.

It's either gibberish, or statements made completely out of context.

However, in the earlier stages of sleep, the sleep talking is a bit more intelligible since

the brain is still partially awake.

But for the most part, don't plan on having any enlightened conversations with a sleep

talker.

For some people it only occurs sporadically, while for others it's a nightly thing.

As weird as it is, most medical experts don't see this as a serious enough problem to seek

medical treatment.

I don't know what's worse, someone talking or someone snoring!

2 - Weird Dreams

Dreams have been a topic of intrigue, fascination, and general confusion for thousands of years.

I'm still trying to figure out what MY own crazy dreams mean, if anything at all.

The exact purpose of dreams is still unknown, but over the centuries, we've at least learned

a bit more about them.

People have been documenting their dreams for thousands of years.

In Mesopotamia they would write about their dreams on clay tablets.

Back then they believed that people's souls would leave their bodies during sleep and

actually visit the places they were dreaming about.

In Ancient Egypt, people with vivid dreams were thought to have special powers.

The Hebrews thought that dreams were God's way of communicating with them.

Sigmund Freud came along and theorized that dreams are a representation of our deepest

desires and anxieties and are often the product of some kind of childhood obsession.

Of course Freud also theorized that dreams were sexual in nature…...leave it to Freud.

More contemporary studies on dreams, known officially as Oneirology are still trying

to find a correlation between dreams and the functions of the brain.

In other words, we're still trying to figure out what purpose dreams serve.

1 - Random acts of Weirdness

Now here's are a few random things that people have done while sleeping, and because

the stories are unique in their own right, take these stories with a grain of salt, but

they're definitely too entertaining to ignore.

Think about some of the conditions we've discussed and decide for yourself if any of

them apply to the behavior.

The first story pretty much those crazy Russian daredevil antics.

One night, London police were called about a possible suicide attempt on the counterweight

of a crane at a construction project, where a young girl was perched precariously 130

feet in the air.

A fireman climbed the crane to try to talk her down, only to find her sleeping.

Sleeping!!

He was afraid of waking her up just in case she would panic and fall.

He decided to secure her in position and conducted a body search, finding a mobile phone.

He found a number for her parents in the phone, and he called them to tell them that their

daughter was sleepwalking on a crane.

They then decided to call her on her phone to wake her up once she was secured and able

to be carried down on a hydraulic ladder.

Now that's just insane…..I'd start chaining myself to my bed!!

I think you guys can quickly figure out the condition this lady has in this next story.

In Australia, a middle-aged woman had an extremely strange habit.

Basically, she'd wake up in the middle of the night, leave her house, annnnnnd sleep

with random dudes.

And by sleep, I mean f*ck.

Uhhh...yeah…...after months of her husband waking up to find their home littered with

used condoms and once again finding his snoring spouse actively having sex with a stranger,

the wife and the world's most trusting husband decided to get medical help.

Seriously, that has to be the greatest trick…...just start snoring!!!!

Doctors were no doubt reluctant to believe the story, most likely thinking instead that

the husband was suffering from one of the world's worst cases of gullible retardation.

She was assessed by psychiatrists, and also checked for physical problems such as brain

tumours, which may cause unusual behaviour.

Neither of those examinations could find a cause.

However, she was found to have a history of talking in her sleep as a teenager and when

monitored in the sleep laboratory, she was found to have a higher number of arousals

from deep sleep than is usual.

Both of these factors might indicate a susceptibility to abnormal sleep behaviour.

However, Roger Allen, a sleep specialist at a private practice in Brisbane, Australia

was skeptical.

He said quote, "Sex is a primal behaviour so it's not impossible – men have erections

in their sleep after all – but this case involved such complex behaviour it seems less

likely."

He also points out that eliminating psychiatric conditions as a cause of the behaviour would

be difficult.

Yeah…..what do you guys think?!

What would you do?!

The last story, is just completely insane to me.

On an early morning in May 1987, Kenneth Parks drove from his wife's parent's house.

He attacked both of them with a tire iron, killing the mother and leaving the father

seriously injured.

Following the attack, Parks went to a police station and turned himself in.

At trial, from the doctor's evidence, it was determined that Parks was sleepwalking at

the time of the incident, and that he was suffering from a disorder of sleep rather

than neurological, psychiatric, or other illness.

Five neurological experts also confirmed that he was sleepwalking during the time of the

incident.

The jury then acquitted Parks.

There are many cases of homicidal sleepwalking, and Parks's case isn't the only one.

I can only hope that once people like Parks get acquitted, there's at least some sort

of provision where they need to take special precautions when they sleep…..

Here's what's next!

Orica-Scott Fan Experience | SHIMANO - Duration: 4:32.

Hi guys, my name is Kristian Blume.

I'm from Denmark.

My name is Thomas Olsen.

My name is Gert.

I live in Westerlo, in Belgium.

My name is Steven.

I live in Belgium.

These days were in one word: incredible.

I will give an answer in every competition in the future...

...hopefully winning again.

It has been fantastic.

It was for me really a once in a lifetime experience.

Awesome opportunity...

...and great to have ORICA-SCOTT opening their doors for these kind of things.

It was a dream come true...

...to be as close as we were to the riders and to the team.

I hoped it could last two or three days more.

Because it was fantastic.

So many impressions and new things.

And when you love cycling and you have always watched them on television...

...then to sit next to them, talk to them and ride with them...

...that is fantastic.

At Mur de Huy, seeing the women finish and then seeing the three passes of the peloton...

...and all the famous riders...

...before seeing the finish...

...and we were standing just two meters away from the finish line.

It was just awesome, completely awesome.

It was so great.

And today, to top it off, was in my case the best day of my life...

...almost.

Second to my wedding day.

It was incredible.

Riding with the guys and being able to talk to them...

...riding super cool bikes...

...it was just incredible, unbelievable.

We did the ride and I was talking to Chris Juul-Jensen, Michael Albasini and Simon Gerrans...

...and just completely easy going guys.

We were talking about some of the races...

...and some of the sportifs that the rest of us can do when we have some time off.

It was a very familiar atmosphere.

It was realy cool and very nice.

I thought these guys would be like rock stars...

...or maybe a little bit more to themselves.

But they were really open...

...they were friendly...

...they answered the questions we asked them...

...they were normal guys.

For me this is a once in a lifetime experience...

...that I can tell to my children about when I'm eighty years old.

It's still in my heart, in my brains.

It will follow me everywhere I think.

I said to Steven, my friend who is here with me...

...that every hour of these days I'm going to look at him and say: 'man, what the f... is this'.

And it happened.

Every day there was something that was happening...

...especially today, but also yesterday when we witnessed the race from so close by.

I was like: 'is this really happening? Pinch me, because I must be dreaming.'

Unbelievable and a dream come true.

Those are the two things I would like to say.

Bí Ẩn Về Cái Móng Người Ngoài Hành Tinh Và Hộp Sọ | Khoa Học Huyền Bí - Duration: 5:02.

Hey guys, thanks for watching Beyond Science, it's Mike Chen.

I love when we find random stuff that no one can identify.

So earlier this week, this news came out

about the paranormal hunters discovering a very strange claw

in the underground caves near the ancient city of Cusco in Peru.

These explorers said they found the bones

while searching caves and tunnel across Cusco in January of 2016.

This claw is apparently a three-finger claw

that is either a really really old Peruvian backscratcher

or maybe it is the hand of an alien.

According to researchers at the Inkari Cusco Institute,

this claw is so big that whatever the claw was attached to

had to be at least nine feet tall.

So, maybe a giant Peruvian alien humanoid thing.

Along with the claw, an elongated humanoid skulls was also found

close to the location of the hand.

But the paranormal researcher and tour guide Brien Foerster

refuses to give out the exact location of the claw's discovery.

He has also refused to release any pictures of the skull.

Now supposedly this claw has been verified

to be a genuine biological object with real bone and skin tissues.

But so far there is no mention where these tests were conducted.

But the claw and skull were said to have been sent to the US

for radiocarbon and DNA tests

that will reveal its true origins.

So if those tests ever come back and are made public,

undoubt that we keep you guys updated.

Next up, we're talking about the end of the world so much.

That's why I think this following story will really make you...

more depressed!

According to mathematical models created by Professor Turchin

from the University of Connecticut

political turmoil is going to be at its highest peak in the 2020.

Turchin is a professor of ecology and mathematics

and have developed something called "cliodynamics",

something that predict broad social trends

and the deep structural causes of these developments.

It doesn't predict stuff like Trump being elected president

but it has predicted rising social and political instabilities

He began by using math to predict human activities from 1500 BC need to 1500 CE

and then moving on to using similar mathematical models

to foresee future events.

Turchin explains that the turmoil peaking in the 2020

will be caused by elite overproduction

in which the gap between the rich and poor grows even wider.

Although the result of such turmoil is unknown

it's kind of creepy that Turchin predictions about our economy collapsing

doesn't match that of Nostradamus

But Turchin said these predictions are a good thing,

he says: "This means that we can avoid the worst,

perhaps by switching to a less harrowing track,

perhaps by redesigning the roller coaster all together.

And finally, in the state of Guerrero in southwest of Mexico,

a woman named Guadalupe Hernandez

claims to have witnesses statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe

shedding tears!

The Virgin of Guadalupe statue was built in Mexico city in the 1500

after supposedly Mary appear to a peasant

and ask for a statute to be built of her

The woman said that it was midday

when she stood in front of the statue and spoke to it.

She had just finished her prayers and suddenly notice that

the statue was shedding tears.

She claims that such an event is a gift from God,

although she doesn't know the reason behind the crying.

The statue has now been moved to a religious colony

where it will be studied by priests.

I just want to say,

although we don't know if the tears are real or not,

a question to think about is that: "what could Mary possibly be crying about."

Also I honestly don't know,

if a holy statue crying should be seen as anything besides terrifying.

It's definitely not tears of joy,

I think, it's definitely not crying

because it's so moved that everyone on Earth love each other so much.

So, I really don't know why people think seeing this is it is a gift from God.

I mean, if the statue was somehow smiley and still be creepy

but yeah, okay, it can be something good

but statue's crying, I don't know.

Also, there are reports of statues even crying blood

and if that's real, that means [DAT] feel like crying regular tears (không hiểu DAT có nghĩa là gì, có thể dịch theo văn cảnh)

it's just not sad enough and now has upgraded to blood.

I'm just saying, in my opinion, I don't really know if this means something good.

But let me know what you guys think

because there are a lot of reports of [DAT] statues crying tears or blood. (không hiểu DAT có nghĩa là gì, có thể dịch theo văn cảnh)

Do you feel like they are real, and if you do believe these phenomenons are real,

why do you think it happens.

Also guys, let me know what you make up that whole three-finger claw thing?

You think that belongs to an alient or a 9 feet sloth?

And finally, I mentioned this before.

But some of you guys know that

in my last video, I announce a big change coming to Beyond Science.

I talked about how to often I bring up a subject

and there's just so much more that I know you guys want to know.

So we decided to create a magazine

where we are going to be packing in a lot more information, citing sources

and giving you guys the full story.

Basically, building our community of open-minded people

asking big questions

and therefore pushing humanity forward.

So, I have a question for you guys

because you guys are the reason why any of this is even possible.

What do you want to see in this magazine?

What topics do you want us to cover in depth?

Let me know that as well in the comments below.

Thank you all so much for watching the video.

See you.
