The Leftovers: Character Spotlight: Kevin Garvey (HBO) - Duration: 2:28.

(GROANS)
Maybe I was dead, but I had never felt so alive.
I think Kevin was always trying to grapple
with the loss of family.
He was always trying to wrap his arms around getting
a sense of normalcy back, at least something
that's predictable, and to continue that.
The whole show has been about Kevin coming back home.
But whenever he gets home, it's not enough.
Kevin is a guy who was on the verge of escaping
his previous marriage.
When he gets the things that he wants,
he gets dissatisfied.
What is your place, Kevin?
Is it here? Be honest.
Kevin Garvey has now died and come back to life
a couple of times.
He had what some would describe
as an incredible spiritual experience in the second season
of the show, even though that experience has him believing
that he is an international assassin.
I think he took that experience into season three
as being a very real experience for him.
What do you want?
He felt powerful. He felt like he had purpose.
He felt like he was alive.
There's a yearning for him to want to return to that
spiritual side.
So... he wants to leave home yet again.
He wants to go back.
(APPLAUSE)
DAMON LINDELOF: Through the pragmatic lens, this is very unhealthy behavior.
This is suicidal behavior, this is psychotic behavior.
And it feels like he's now acting
in a self-destructive way to escape this new relationship
that he's having with Nora.
My kids are not dead. They are gone!
Then you should go and be with them.
This is really a love story for him,
but there's something broken inside of Kevin.
There's something that needs to escape, that can't
be with Nora, that feels like he's a coward.
He was terrified of her.
To lie beside her, to be comforted by her as he wept.
And that's really what the seventh episode
is about resolving, which is this part
inside of him that doesn't want to be vulnerable,
that doesn't want to allow his heart to get broken,
and as a result, he has a tendency to sort of run away
from these relationships.
We fucked up with Nora.
Unfortunately, this revelation may have come too late,
because Nora is already on her way to her own destination
that is far, far, far away from Kevin Garvey.
I wanna go home.
