A few weeks ago BenQ approached me
and I have received this 28' UHD gaming monitor from them
called EL2870U.
I'm using this monitor constantly since than
and I prepared this review based upon my experiences in the past few weeks.
I would like to make it clear right at the begining that I have never ever received a monitor for testing before
so I do not have much reference points
therefore please forgive me if my expectations can easily be fulfilled because of that.
I'm not even a "Tech guru"
so I won't be able to do a deep and authentical technical review.
First please let me explain what are my main expectations when I buy a monitor for myself.
Considering that I'm using a 40' Tv as monitor for 8 years
my treshold is at a VERY high level
so my main priority is the size of the monitor.
The monitor should be REALLY BIG.:)
Under 24' I do not even consider monitors now
because I feel like I'm watching a pocket tv or bigger tablet
but this BenQ monitor with its 28' size is well above my treshold.
In other worlds: I was satisfied with its size.
The other important factors for me are the specifications and performance, which should be align with the 2018 standards.
I expect 4K resolution and 60 Hz frequency at least, but it is not a problem if the later one is higher.
In addition to these good image quality and 1 ms response time are also crucial
since blurry or bad image are not good.
And I do not have to say that there cannot be any image defects or other technical errors.
I'm happy to announce that all of these expectations of mine were fully satisfied
as this is a 4K monitor with 60 Hz frequency and 1 ms response time.
Not to mention that I did not encounter any technical issues at all.
Finally but not least, depending on the screen size I expect a fair price-value proposition
and I got what I wanted here as the monitor's price is around 400$.
Fun fact: I bought my second 28' UHD monitor last year around the same price. :)
So I can tell that this monitor has met all of my expectations
and after trying it I know that this could have been a good choice for me as well last year.
Let's see what other features this monitor can offer.
BenQ's goal with this monitor is to offer a good solution for average gamers like me,
who want good quality on a fair price
and do not need extremely high refresh rate
or other extras which are mostly required by pro e-sport gamers
(if they need it at all).
The design is simple and without any ostentation.
After a long time this was my first gamer gear
which did not have any extra lights, eye candy or other overdesigned stuff.
Therefore it is perfectly suitable for work in an office as well.
There are vents all around its edge
so we do not have to fear about overheating.
You can also find wall mount slots in the background
if you wish to mount it on the wall
but in this case you need to buy the mount separately.
You can easily set it up
but it has very limited adjustability.
You can only adjust its tilt
but not its height. Personally I did not find this a problem.
It has 2 HDMI 2.0 ports with 1 display port at the back
and it also has an audio jack as well. Normally this should be enough for everything a gamer wants.
1 HDMI cable and 1 power cable were also included in the package
but in case you want to use the display port you need to get a display cable separately as it is not included.
It also has 2 built-in 2W speakers
which should not be used ever, or only in case of "emergency"
because their sound quality is not so good.
BenQ could have left these speakers out easily
as most of the gamers already use better sound system as default
which are far more superior to these speakers.
The power and menu buttons are at the bottom right side of the monitor.
In addition there is an extra button on the bottom right side,
which can easily turn the HRD and Brightness intelligence on or off.
More about HDR and B.I. a bit later.
Let's check those extra features.
The monitor has several built-in features which serve as eye-care and visual enhancers
or at least they try to do so.
One of the most advertised features is the HDR
which can be turned on / off with the previously mentioned extra button in the bottom right.
But we can do the same from the menu
where we can find many other pre-set options too.
HDR stands for High dynamic range imaging
which results more vibrant colors and visible images.
Bright areas will be even brighter without blinding the user
while dark areas will be more detailed and not just black spots.
Though the feature sound cool, I was not impressed to be honest
as the HDR alone did not produce as big improvement in image quality as I thought it would,
especially when I try to record my screen for you.
If we look really closely we can discover small changes
especially if we can compare it with a non-HDR monitor
but in itself it is not so big of a deal, or just my eyes are not so good anymore.
If HDR is your main and only concern, you may want to skip this monitor.
On the other hand the Brightness intelligence (B.I.) was far more spectacular when it was on.
Especially if we combined it with HDR.
B.I. analyzes the ambient light in the room with the sensor at the bottom of the screen
and automatically adjusts the monitor's ligthts and colors
to reduce eye fatigue.
And this feature WORKS, and you can see it for yourself too in a moment.
Considering that it is nearly impossible to show you the same image quality from the monitor through camera
what I can see with my own eyes here,
I thought to do a very simple but spectacular demonstration for you
which will show you what HDR+B.I. can do together.
Here we have Assassin's creed Origins where I climb to the top of the piramid
with HDR and B.I. ON
And now I will turn them OFF.
The image became glaring so much, it almost blinds you.
I stop the game video for a moment
and you can see that almost the entire screen is white
This is why I told that it is very unfortunate to demonstrate this monitor through camera.
But let's wait if I turn back HDR and B.I. again.
We need to wait a few moments till the sensor adapts to the light conditions of the room
and I will cheat a little bit because I have artificial lights pointed towards the monitor which will alter the sensor
so I will cover it with my hand simulating a normal or dark room.
Take a closer look on how the small details and buildings in the background starts to appear as the monitor adapts
VOILA! BEHOLD! We can see the background without going blind :)
Funny thing is that you can see this change better through camera than with normal eyes here.
You can see now that this technology works,
but the HDR in itself is not soo impressive as the intelligent brightness adjustment (B.I.)
The monitor also supports low blue light and flicker-free technology
and these features together reduce the stress on your eyes and prevent eye damage.
Flicker-free monitors are also useful if you wish to make videos about your screen for any reasons :)
If you watch it closely, you may see the difference here.
The benefit of Flicker-free monitors is that you can spend more time watching them without feeling tired or risking eye damage.
Last but not least it has AMD freesynch support and super resolution mode
which will eliminate image tearing while making it more fluent and sharp.
Overall the EL2870U is a great monitor
which will fully satisfy the needs of an average gamer
and it has many eye-care features which should be a priority,
especially if we spend much time in front of the computer/console.
The specs are fully aligned with the 2018 standards
and with its 28" screen size it is slightly above the average monitors
which will provide a good gaming experience
provided that you have the right hardware to run the games in High settings.
And you get all this for a very fair price/value proposition.
Regarding the design and features you can find better or more "decorative" models on the market
but they usually lack in some other things where this BenQ monitor excels or they will simply cost you more.
As I have stated at the beginning
for me this monitor has met all of my expectations
and I can safely recommend it to those, who has similar expectations
or already thinking about buying this monitor.
If this monitor has attracted your interest than you can find the link to BenQ's website in the video's description
where you can find more information about this or other monitors from BenQ.
I sincerely thank to BenQ for sponsoring this video by providing me this test monitor.
Thank you for watching.
This was the BenQ EL2870U monitor.
Goodbye.
