hey everybody, today we're going to talk about sociopaths.
now diagnostically speaking, a sociopath is someone with "antisocial personality disorder."
[but when it comes to a clinician's standpoint, or a professional's standpoint, I can't actually
give someone the diagnosis of "psychopath," or "sociopath," or "just darn crazy."
because that's just not how it works, right?]
i honestly think we just call people "sociopaths" or "psychopaths" because it just sounds more
ominous than "antisocial personality disorder."
today just know that they're interchangeable. [because just like a lot of the other things
i talk about, people throw terms around without actually knowing what they mean.]
now everyone who hears about sociopaths wants to know if they're aware of their diagnosis.
[personality disorders are something that is pervasive.
i-it invades a-all sorts of parts of our lives, and it is something that we really have to
work on in order to manage it, or overcome it.]
we would at least like to them to be aware that they're bad. right?
like just knowing like at least they know that they're a "bad person."
[because as i've talked about before, just having the insight into the way that our mind
works is the first step and the most important step to managing it better just like any other
personality disorder, we can manage our symptoms.]
or worse, they'll decide to get married, and become a parent.
pretty bad, right?
[so it's something we definitely need to recognize, especially as a clinician, the sooner i can
recognize that someone is struggling with this, the better outcome there can be.]
and i know even going through all the information makes you think that these people makes you
think that these people are going to be extremely dangerous and terrible.
[so just because someone has this diagnosis doesn't make them dangerous.]
sociopaths are out in the world roaming about, not locked away in prison.
[people that have this tend to be the serial killer type]
[<slowed down for emphasis, with the thinking emoji floating on screen> so just because someone has this diagnosis
doesn't make them dangerous]
and the truth is, there are far more of them, than you think.
the rough statistic is 4% percent of the population.
[but only 1% of the population actually has antisocial personality disorder]
[<text on screen reads:*i don't give data on my statistics. for all you know i could be making this up*> <slowed down for emphasis> or one in 25
[that's not a very big percentage]
<text on screen reads: here's my Official Therapist Approval On Armchair Diagnosis> how do you know someone's a sociopath.
so chances are you've known someone like this.
so let that be a warning sign, that you have possibly come in contact with one of the 4%
percent of sociopaths out there.
[because that's not how it works, right?] (subtitles entered by myself, apologies for any errors or weirdness)
