Thumbs up! Defiant Boris Johnson arrives at his Oxfordshire home - Duration: 16:54.
A defiant Boris Johnson gave waiting photographers a cheery thumbs up as he arrived at his home this afternoon
The former Foreign Secretary was pictured arriving at his Oxfordshire home apparently wearing the same clothes - a blue suit and pink shirt - that he was spotted in yesterday
Last night Mr Johnson was pictured looking glum in the garden of his home with his head in his hands, just hours after upsetting other Tory MPs with his comments on Brexit and amid much speculation over his impending divorce
The former foreign secretary is being divorced by long-suffering wife Marina over claims of another affair
The former Mayor of London's wife is expected to serve divorce papers branding him an 'adulterer,' it was claimed last night
A source told The Sun she is looking to move on quickly as she has 'had enough.'They said: 'The papers are coming imminently
They were due within the next fortnight but Marina's just had enough.' RELATED ARTICLES Previous 1 2 Next Tories' open civil war rages as Justice Secretary David
Michel Barnier says it is ¿realistic¿ to hope a Brexit. Trade Secretary Liam Fox warns against 'irrational
Share this article Share News of the divorce comes as it is claimed at least a dozen Tory MPs are ready to quit the party to stop Boris Johnson becoming leader
They issued the warning last night after he sparked outrage by saying Theresa May's Brexit strategy had put Britain in a suicide vest and handed the detonator to Brussels
Mr Johnson's critics accused him of using disgusting language to distract attention from his private life
It comes as Mr Johnson was pictured looking glum in the garden of his Oxfordshire home with his head in his hands as he sipped a cup of tea
Yesterday the MP faced fresh revelations about his relationship with Carrie Symonds, who abruptly quit as Tory communications director last month
Sources last night claimed the pair had been on a series of high-class dates in London - including at the discreet Rosewood Hotel in Holborn
With the Conservatives descending into open warfare, allies of Mr Johnson hit back, accusing No 10 of orchestrating a smear campaign with the leak of a 'dirty dossier' on his love life
But Foreign Office minister Alan Duncan, who served as Mr Johnson's deputy, yesterday described him as an 'irresponsible wrecker' and vowed to stop him becoming party leader
Sarah Wollaston, Tory chairman of the Commons health committee, yesterday became the fourth MP to warn publicly that she would resign from the party if Mr Johnson toppled Mrs May
A senior Tory said 12 or more MPs would refuse to serve under the former foreign secretary – effectively depriving the Government of a majority
'Boris will never be prime minister – he would split the party,' the MP said. 'There are a large number of us determined to make sure he does not get onto the ballot paper whenever the leadership contest takes place
'If he did somehow manage to win then there are many of us – well into double figures – who would resign the party whip
He would lose the Government's majority. He could not govern.' The row came as:Downing Street faced questions about whether Miss Symonds had been forced out of her job because of revelations about her closeness to Mr Johnson;Jeremy Hunt, Sajid Javid and International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt paraded their pro-Brexit credentials amid talk of a leadership contest;David Davis prepared to unveil an alternative Brexit plan based on a technological solution to the Northern Ireland border issue; No 10 launched a fresh charm offensive with MPs in a bid to win support for Mrs May's Chequers plan;Tory MP Nadine Dorries, an ally of Mr Johnson, said Miss Symonds appeared to have become 'collateral damage' in Downing Street's war with him
Mr Johnson had been on the back foot following revelations last week that his 25-year marriage to Miss Wheeler was over
But yesterday he went on the attack with an incendiary article in which he renewed his criticism of the Prime Minister's handling of Brexit
Writing in the Mail on Sunday, he said Mrs May had allowed the Northern Ireland issue to become 'grossly inflated'
He warned Brexit would fail unless she tore up the so-called 'backstop' agreed with the EU last December, which would keep Northern Ireland in the customs union
Mr Johnson described the Chequers plan, which would require Britain to follow a common rulebook with the EU, as a humiliation
'We look like a seven-stone weakling being comically bent out of shape by a 500lb gorilla,' he said
'We have opened ourselves to perpetual political blackmail.'We have wrapped a suicide vest around the British constitution – and handed the detonator to Michel Barnier
' Tom Tugendhat, chairman of the Commons foreign affairs committee, savaged Mr Johnson's intervention and told him to grow up
'A suicide bomber murdered many in the courtyard of my office in Helmand,' said the former Army officer
'The carnage was disgusting, limbs and flesh hanging from trees and bushes.'Brave men who stopped him killing me and others died in horrific pain
Some need to grow up. Comparing the PM to that isn't funny.' Sir Alan said: 'For Boris to say that the PM's view is like that of a suicide bomber is too much
This marks one of the most disgusting moments in modern British politics. I'm sorry, but this is the political end of Boris Johnson
If it isn't now, I will make sure it is later.'Alistair Burt, who also served under Mr Johnson, said there was 'no justification for such an outrageous, inappropriate and hurtful analogy'
Home Secretary Mr Javid urged Mr Johnson to use 'measured language in future', adding: 'There are much better ways to articulate your differences
'But allies of Mr Johnson rallied to his defence. MP Zac Goldsmith said there were 'a number of possible motives' for Sir Alan's attack but 'given its author, we can be certain principles aren't one of them'
Mrs Dorries said Mr Johnson faced vitriol because rivals were terrified of his popular appeal
Ross Thomson, another Eurosceptic Tory, accused No 10 of trying to smear Mr Johnson, following the leak of a 'black book' on him
Drawn up by a member of Mrs May's team during the 2016 leadership election, the 4,000-word dossier details Mr Johnson's affairs with journalists Petronella Wyatt and Anna Fazackerly and socialite Helen Macintyre, with whom he had a love child
It also details his sacking by former Tory leader Michael Howard for lying, his admission that he tried cocaine at university and his controversial comments during years of column writing
Mr Thomson said: 'What on earth are No 10 playing at? We are all Conservatives. This is gutter politics that only serves to deliver the disaster of a Corbyn government
'Downing Street sources angrily denied that they were involved in the leaking of the document to the media
What Boris said and how MPs responded Boris Johnson: We look like a seven-stone weakling being comically bent out of shape by a 500lb gorilla
We have opened ourselves to perpetual political blackmail. We have wrapped a suicide vest around the British constitution - and handed the detonator to Michel Barnier
Nadine Dorries: Don't underestimate the vitriol that'll be directed towards Boris
He delivered the Leave vote, Remainers and wannabe future PMs hate him.Ross Thomson: What on earth are No 10 playing at? This [the leaks about Johnson's private life] is gutter politics that only serves to deliver the disaster of a Corbyn government
Andrew Bridgen: Boris says it how he sees it and speaks truth unto power. Boris is a great orator and that is what he's done
Tom Tugendhat: A suicide bomber murdered many in the courtyard of my office in Helmand
The carnage was disgusting –Comparing the PM to that isn't funny.Sir Alan Duncan: This [suicide vest remark] marks one of the most disgusting moments in modern politics
This is the end of Boris Johnson. If it isn't now, I will make sure it is later.Alistair Burt: If we don't stop this extraordinary use of language over Brexit, our country might never heal
Anna Soubry: Johnson would be a disaster, not just for the Conservative Party, he would be a disaster for our country
Sexy, clever, ambitious. and barely older than his daughter: How Boris Johnson, 54, became smitten by the Conservative's blonde PR guru 'Apples'By Jane Fryer for The Daily Mail Conservative spin doctor Carrie 'Apples' Symonds's 30th birthday party – a house party thrown by well-connected friends at their family home in north London back in March – was a very jolly and well-attended affair with extremely free-flowing alcohol
Everyone got stuck in. While the younger generation of cool Tories (including Carrie, stunning in an elegant party dress) danced the night away to Abba hits in the living room, older Cabinet ministers, including Environment Secretary Michael Gove and Home Secretary Sajid Javid, jiggled around the edges
But perhaps most arresting was the sight of then Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, 54, showing off some of his most flamboyant dancefloor moves
'He's a surprisingly good dancer and he was really putting his back into it,' reports one fellow guest
Of course he was! He must have had to move heaven and earth (and a slew of Foreign Office commitments) to be at the party in the first place, and he was determined to make a good impression on the birthday girl
Because, as it now turns out, he and Carrie (then the Conservative communications director) had already been close for some time
On Valentine's Day they enjoyed a romantic dinner 'a deux' at Rules in Covent Garden – described by a fellow diner as 'an intimate meal and hardly anything to do with any great matters of state' – while Boris's bodyguards twiddled their thumbs at a nearby table
The week before, they were photographed glinting naughtily at each other at the Tories' Black and White Ball
A month ago at a private get-together for Brexiteers, they arrived together, spent all evening talking to each other and then left together
While Boris is well-versed in extra-marital affairs, friends say this time he is completely smitten
And no wonder, because Carrie – who's barely five years older than fashion student Lara, the eldest of his four children with second wife Marina Wheeler – is nothing if not glamorous, judging by the photos she keeps posting of herself on social media
She's also blonde, charming (it is thought that the nickname 'Apples' is on account of her luscious cheeks), waspishly gossipy, infectiously good fun – particularly after a drink or three – popular with men and women and passionate about politics
And now Boris. As a friend puts it: 'Carrie is a person for whom the word vivacious could have been invented
She's highly intelligent, very pretty, very sexy.'She is also, without doubt, extremely ambitious and, as it turns out, not that bothered about keeping their relationship under wraps
So while Boris desperately obfuscated both at home (after all his affairs, he was on a final warning from Marina) and at work (constantly giving his furious protection officers the slip so the pair could meet up), Carrie was only too happy to share details of their dinner dates with friends
At a colleague's wedding three months ago she showed some of Boris's friskier texts to a pal
When an official-looking car swooped up at the wedding venue soon after, her friends reportedly speculated as to whether she'd gone to join Boris for the night at Chevening, his grace-and-favour Foreign Office residence
Her openness may have been deliberate. According to one friend, 'Apples' was never the sort to be 'the one on the side'
'I don't think you mess with Carrie,' says the friend, who insists the reason Marina and Boris have finally announced their split after 25 years is because Carrie wouldn't have put up with anything less
'She would have said, 'Do the right thing or I'm not getting involved'. She'd want everything official and above board and she wouldn't want him to be cheating on his wife or lying to his children
She's quite moral.'Which might sound curious given recent events, but perhaps her attitude harks back to her own childhood
Carrie herself is the product of an extra-marital affair. Her parents are Matthew Symonds, 64, one of the founders of the Independent newspaper, and Josephine Mcaffee, 70, who was then one of the paper's lawyers
Both were married to other people at the time.Carrie was born in London in 1988 – just four months later her father's wife gave birth to Carrie's half-sister Isobel (she has two other half siblings) – and was brought up by her mother in a handsome three-bedroom townhouse on a quiet, leafy road in East Sheen, south-west London
Her father provided financial assistance but, according to one friend, never seemed much of a presence in her life
'She talked of her mother all the time, but never mentioned him,' he says. When asked by the Daily Mail about his daughter's connection to Boris, Symonds said that he knew 'literally nothing about this at all – I knew she was changing her job
That's all I know.'Carrie attended £20,000-a-year Godolphin and Latymer School in Hammersmith, west London, where she excelled at pretty much everything but particularly sport, theatre and socialising
Later she went to Warwick University, where she gained a first-class honours degree in theatre studies and history of art
But politics was always her passion; she joined Conservative HQ fresh from university and became a Tory press officer in 2009
Immaculately made-up, beautifully dressed, albeit, as one colleague puts it – 'always a bit older than her age: pearls and silk scarves, that sort of thing, and with a cut-glass English accent' – she cut a swathe through her peers
She worked on the successful 'Back Boris' campaign to re-elect Johnson as London Mayor in 2012 and, following the 2015 General Election, was appointed a special adviser to the then culture secretary John Whittingdale
Next came stints advising some of the Tory Party's biggest names – Sajid Javid when he was communities secretary, Tory MP Zac Goldsmith, Amber Rudd (who was until recently Home Secretary), and the current Environment Secretary Michael Gove
She fast won a reputation as 'an excellent spinner who knows a story and is a great operator'
For several years she dated Harry Cole, a political journalist and former co-editor of political gossip blog Guido Fawkes
They were considered the 'golden' couple of the young cool Conservatives, but they split last year
At about the same time, and in the wake of last year's election, she was appointed the Tories' communications director, and named as the UK's second most powerful public relations professional by PR Week magazine
She left this summer when, after tweeting endless positive comments about Boris, rumours circulated that she was too close, not just to Team Boris (she is a fervent Brexiteer), but to Boris himself
'She was eased out of CCHQ by [Tory Party chairman] Brandon Lewis,' says an insider
'She was director of communications under a previous chairman, and was sometimes shockingly indiscreet in her loyalty to Boris and criticism of Theresa May, and would actively promote Johnson's interests in front of May's
'It is easy to see why Boris has lost his head.As well as being young, gorgeous and feisty – on her social media feed is a glamorous photo of her dancing on a car bonnet outside Westminster in teeny floral shorts – she lives for politics
'She understands what it's like for him, and what a difficult world politics can be to exist in,' says a friend
But as well as politics, she is passionate about the environment and animal welfare, and today starts a new job with technology giant Bloomberg, promoting clean oceans
Friends say her drive will appeal to him as much as her looks. 'She knows what she wants, and will do whatever's necessary to get it and won't take any nonsense,' says one source
'He'll enjoy her being in charge. He loves a strong woman and she'll keep him on his toes
'What 'Apples' might see in 54-year-old Boris is another matter. Was it his frenetic disco dancing? Could he be a replacement father figure? He's certainly old enough
But friends of the pair snort at the notion. 'He's generally keener on fathering people than being a father figure!'Of course, he might look a crumpled buffoon on the news, but in the flesh, Boris is fantastically charismatic and fizzes with energy
'He is exciting and energetic,' says one political commentator. 'If you're interested in politics and you like intelligent men, then he's your guy
'In any event, people who know Carrie Symonds think the age gap will suit her perfectly because she's so far ahead of most of her peers and very ambitious
'She's a grown-up, she doesn't want a boy! Together they could be quite the power couple
'At this stage, of course, there are many unanswered and unanswerable questions. Will 'Apples' want children? Will Boris want more, once he's managed to rebuild bridges with his existing offspring, that is? Will he want to marry (for a third time)? Who knows? The only thing that's clear is that Carrie would support any Boris bid for the Tory leadership with single-minded passion and drive, because she almost certainly fancies life at No 10 as much as he does

Bias In The Deaf Community | ASL - Duration: 25:23.
[marker writing]
[Pokemon game sound]
Hello!
So I think I have someone with me today.
Where is she?
Oh!
Hi! Who are you?
CHRISSY: I'm Chrissy.
RIKKI: She drove all the way here to North Carolina from where?
CHRISSY: Maryland.
RIKKI: That's a six hour drive.
CHRISSY: Yes, it is.
RIKKI: And now we're collaborating on 3 videos each, 6 total.
It's going to be a long day.
CHRISSY: A long day. RIKKI: Fingers are going to fall off.
Where's the ambulance?
Today, we'll be talking about bias in the deaf community.
To put it simply, we'll be talking about our personal experiences.
Do you want to start?
CHRISSY: Everything I say will be just my personal opinions.
I don't want to upset anyone.
RIKKI: Again, this is our experience.
Everyone has different experiences.
CHRISSY: The deaf community is very diverse.
So many different types of people come into this community.
But many people are biased against different things
like cochlear implants, hearing aids...
RIKKI: Speaking.
CHRISSY: Right, voicing. Oral deaf.
CHRISSY: Mainstreamed. RIKKI: New signers.
CHRISSY: New signers.
Fluent signers.
PSE or SEE signers.
The list goes on.
We're all different people,
but we have all something in common: hearing loss.
I have, we both have a lot of experience with bias in the community.
As a mainstreamed person, I know many Deaf people
who are uneasy about having me around.
They think like she has a hearing aid and is connected to the hearing world,
they don't like that.
I think it's ridiculous.
We are all people with different experiences,
different backgrounds, so just, like, accept that.
You know?
I know I have hearing aids and some people-
more with cochlear implants-
but some people are like,
"Why have a hearing aid?
"You're Deaf; just accept your identity and be proud.
"Don't want a hearing aid to help."
I mean, honestly, my hearing aids don't
really help me at all anymore,
but I'm still comfortable with having them.
That's my personal decision.
RIKKI: I've noticed a lot of deaf people have hearing aids
and everyone's like, "Okay!"
And hearing aids get shown- oh, and Chrissy has awesome ones-
They're purple and have little things on them.
But then I've got a friend with a cochlear implant and
a lot of people- She's fluent in ASL, by the way,
but because she has a cochlear implant,
people have a tendency of going after her.
Back to you.
CHRISSY: It's really ridiculous.
I mean, I have a lot of friends who
have cochlear implants too, but don't really use them.
Some benefit from the CI, some don't.
But at the end of the day, that's a personal decision.
It doesn't change how people socialize
and interact if you sign or whatever.
I don't know. It's ridiculous.
RIKKI: I mean, sometimes, you might see someone with a cochlear implant
and they're very hearing headed and oppressing other deaf people,
but my friend isn't like that.
She has a cochlear implant, is fluent in ASL,
and is very involved in the deaf community.
So that's very different.
But there are still people who want to attack her.
CHRISSY: It's really just a personal decision and
if someone has a cochlear implant,
it doesn't mean they are a bad person
or not accepting of their deaf identity.
Sometimes I know-
I'm not going to go deep in this topic because it's really controversial,
but people get cochlear implants from birth
when their parents give them to them.
It's not their choice.
Maybe be a little resentful toward the parents,
but, still, why be upset or rude to someone who made that decision
or had someone else make that decision for them.
It's just technological help.
It's not changing an identity and it's not against the deaf community.
I think it's important to remember we all relate with hearing loss.
We're all oppressed and sometimes don't have accessibility.
Why take a community that's already been oppressed
and become more oppressive?
That's happening.
The other thing with bias in the deaf community-
I know we both have experience with this, is with oral deaf or voicing deaf.
RIKKI: Mainstreamed education.
I have a deaf mom and hearing dad and my mom was mainstreamed too.
CHRISSY: I have an all hearing family who don't sign at all.
So... what do you expect?
I'm not a perfect person.
I know a lot of hard of hearing people who try to get involved
in the deaf community but they're scared.
The community pushes them away.
RIKKI: You see people attack some of those who try to get involved.
Like it's not enough if they're not perfect.
They're not wanted.
CHRISSY: And that's rude.
Honestly, I think people need to be more open minded.
To take in diversity.
Everyone is human.
Everyone who needs or wants to be included should be.
RIKKI: For myself, I'm newer.
I'm newer to the culture, the community.
I was hearing headed- well, not really like that,
but it felt like I had to be.
Because I was the only deaf person that I knew.
I mean, besides my deaf mom, but that doesn't count.
And then, you know, I found the Internet.
CHRISSY & RIKKI: A whole new world!
RIKKI: We've been doing that all day.
So then I was slowly getting involved because I was still...
Well, most of the community that I knew of was in Los Angeles.
And I live in North Carolina.
LA is over there.
Like, way over there.
CHRISSY: Gotta fly all the way over there.
RIKKI: So all I had was the Internet which made it harder to get
really involved, dip my toes in.
And when I stopped doing makeup on YouTube,
and started doing more videos about deafness-
not deaf culture or ASL, at least not yet,
but about my own personal experiences as a deaf person.
And then I was flown out to Los Angeles for a movie.
That's when everything started.
Eventually, my videos started getting more views because of #NoMoreCRAPtions.
I started learning ASL and
I'm really someone who is not good at learning [signed] languages.
CHRISSY: But you're improving.
RIKKI: My brain messes up sometimes.
I still mess up English.
And I grew up with English!
CHRISSY: Everyone makes mistakes!
RIKKI: That! I feel like a lot of people don't realize that.
So, for example, you might say that I might sign more PSE.
And maybe I do, but I learned that from deaf people who taught me.
I mean, I'm not fluent.
I'm not amazing when it comes to using the language.
But I can still have a conversation.
And I learned how to from deaf people.
But I still get people commenting that I suck at signing.
Oh! You know, when I started doing YouTube,
when I started talking about deafness,
a lot of people were mad because I wasn't signing.
They wanted me to sign, and then I eventually made my
first video in ASL which turned into more videos.
But then people would tell me that I suck at signing.
And I'm like, if I don't sign, you get pissed at me,
if I start signing and I'm bad at it, you get pissed.
What do you want?!
CHRISSY: Right!
RIKKI: Then when I stop signing, I start getting comments like,
"You're not signing! You're not really deaf!"
And it's always the same people!
CHRISSY: Always. If you're speaking, people think you're lying.
They don't believe you're deaf.
It's like they think voicing means that you're not deaf.
RIKKI: It's just... what do you want?!
Like, just pick one.
Okay, so back to the whole English thing.
It's funny because if...
the deaf people who taught me ASL,
they grew up signing with their deaf families,
they're fluent in ASL, and they were teaching me.
So, it's like, what's your opinion on them?
CHRISSY: Right.
RIKKI: And then popular deaf people like Nyle-
And I love Nyle, okay?
He and I are pals.
But I've noticed that he also tends to sign more English.
Friends have told me that the signing is more English.
And then I'm like, "So why is he being looked up to?!"
But you know what? He's a good person!
He does a lot of activism work.
So, yes, I say support him.
However, the thing is, there's so much support for him,
but if I'm signing like that,
"Why are you signing like that?!
"You suck!"
CHRISSY: Everything you do is wrong!
And it's such a big problem in the deaf community.
People are so biased about everything.
There's an opinion on everything.
And, sometimes, you just need to accept people.
We're all different.
There isn't a system for a perfect deaf person,
of how you're supposed to be.
No, that's not going to happen.
I know when I started getting involved in the Deaf community,
I wasn't online so I didn't have to deal with internet rage,
but some people didn't want to chat with me.
I was mainstreamed and not signing perfect.
But, like, what to do you expect?
I didn't choose to not learn ASL first.
If it were my personal decision,
I would have been signing since I was born.
People are different and this is a different problem,
but everyone's experiences vary.
RIKKI: See, I recognize that I have more privilege because-
Okay, so this is a confusing concept for some.
I have some privilege if I'm speaking- okay-
So I tend to voice more than you do, right?
So if we're at a restaurant together and I'm the one voicing,
the server will probably just look at me and not look at you
because I'm using my voice.
And she tends to sign more.
So that's where I have more privilege.
But at the same time, if I don't understand them,
then they'll likely get mad at me.
CHRISSY: Well, I voice sometimes too.
I have a hearing family and I'm involved in the hearing world too.
I'm not shoving the hearing world aside.
I'm not writing it off.
No, I'm a part of that too.
RIKKI: And with languages- languages are hard.
You know?
So I always say to use the language
you're the most comfortable with.
Because if you're uploading a video for everyone to see,
if I'm uploading a video that's in ASL,
and the topic is difficult for me,
I won't know how to sign everything I need to.
And that would be a problem because
if I sign something wrong,
everyone's going to be like, "What is she saying?"
Well, there'd be two reactions:
The first would be, "What?"
and the second would be, "Excuse me?!"
CHRISSY: Yeah, that's true.
RIKKI: So voicing, captions, done.
CHRISSY: Yeah, I mean, if you are most comfortable speaking,
you should do you.
Depending on the situation,
I'll decide whether to speak or sign.
If I'm with my hearing family,
they are all clueless if I sign,
they honestly get offended.
So I speak with them.
I did speech therapy for 13 years so I can speak.
Speaking is a privilege I have.
But it doesn't mean I'm not Deaf,
or I'm not involved in the Deaf community,
or that I'm not proud of the culture,
community, and my identity.
There's not one thing.
I don't know how to explain it.
RIKKI: It's hard explaining this stuff.
But the goal is to make ASL, or all sign languages, accessible.
You want it to still exist,
but if you make new signers feel small,
that'll stop.
Thank you.
That will stop and then the doors close.
CHRISSY: Someone who is mainstreamed is probably
already struggling with self esteem and being alone,
stuck in the hearing world.
Then if they try and get involved in the Deaf community
and are made to feel worse about themselves.
That's awful, why do that?
Why not accept them, help them pick up new signs.
RIKKI: Yeah, if you do that, they will stop trying.
CHRISSY: I know this experience.
I know other kids whose hearing loss was a surprise
and didn't know what to do.
I want to help them.
I've experienced progressive hearing loss.
I know what's happening.
I want them to be involved.
I want them to see the world
that I found that made my life
so much better and improved everything.
The signing world,
why not help others find that experience,
find that world?
I don't know why people need that personal bias.
I know some of that bias is spread through Deaf schools.
As mainstreamed people,
we have experienced getting involved in the deaf community
and it's not easy because of the set up bias.
Trying is not easy but it's important.
Many people are intimidated and
don't want to get involved because
they are scared of people's bias.
We both know from experience that it's not
easy to get involved in the community
with people's bias.
People's opinions sway one way and
ignore people who aren't signing fluently.
It's ridiculous and I know from Deaf events
if someone is new, we will try basic conversation.
But things stop and they'll be ignored
because people don't know what to do.
But I know it's so important to help them.
If they are mainstreamed and alone,
their self-esteem is lowering.
If they try and get involved in the deaf community
but are pushed aside,
they are left with nothing and a damaged self-esteem.
The deaf community need to be more accepting
and accept that everyone is from different backgrounds.
If you aren't from a Deaf institution, that's fine.
There are different ways to learn and to communicate.
It's not easy but is so important to accept people.
I know when I started, well, not really started-
Since I've been going to deaf events and
meeting other deaf people who were mainstreamed
and sign a little bit, not a lot,
but I know how important it is
to get them involved and how beneficial that is.
So I want to do everything I can
to help them learn and pick up signs,
introduce them to that "New World."
It's important to help them build themselves back up.
Give them that pride, give them the experience,
give them the deaf community, introduce them to the culture.
They probably want to learn and want to be included.
Everyone wants to be included, right?
So why keep that bias
and push away people who need people?
If you work together, things only improve.
So why damage their self-esteem and worsen their signing?
RIKKI: Also, I've sort of noticed that
the deaf community has a few cliques.
And I forgot the sign even though you taught it to me earlier,
but there's a lot of racism in the community as well.
CHRISSY: Racism.
RIKKI: Show me again?
CHRISSY: Racism.
RIKKI: Racism.
Ah, like pulling the skin!
Thank you!
There's a lot of cliques but also racism.
I have a few deaf friends who are black and
we notice how differently they tend to be treated.
For example, the entertainment circle.
You see a lot of the same faces repeatedly.
So my friend, who is a person of color,
well, specifically, who is black,
she keeps trying again and again,
and she always gets less support than everyone else.
Than all my white friends.
CHRISSY: The deaf community is oppressed,
but for people with intersectional identities,
it's worse.
I know that bias doesn't help.
There is enough bias in the world already.
We don't need more.
I know some people think that
Deaf people hate hearing people.
That's the other thing:
deaf people are just like hearing people
except we can't hear, that's it.
RIKKI: I can't do math.
And other things. But anyway.
CHRISSY: But one thing- why add oppression?
I don't know.
This is a specific topic.
RIKKI: I remember my deaf friends from a while back...
Now, we don't really talk anymore
because it seems like they keep to themselves.
They stay in their same circle or clique.
Bums me out a little bit.
CHRISSY: Oppression sucks.
I know I have a lot of privilege, white privilege.
RIKKI: Same.
CHRISSY: Not as a woman, but as a person.
I have privilege and I accept that, I know-
RIKKI: Voicing and white privilege.
CHRISSY: Voicing privilege.
It's important to recognize and acknowledge that privilege.
RIKKI: It's not simple.
There's a lot of different things involved.
CHRISSY: Bias sucks.
I don't know why people have it in the community.
Why people are so strong headed about things.
Cochlear implants, hearing aids,
oral, speaking, whatever.
Just accept people for who they are.
New signers.
Fluent signers.
Whatever.
People are people.
RIKKI: And that's our rant for today.
Okay, not really a rant.
More like a discussion.
A really excited discussion.
Look, I love my deaf friends.
I love the deaf community.
I love the language and learning more.
It's just...
It's not perfect.
Well, nothing's perfect.
CHRISSY: It's important to recognize privilege,
recognize diversity.
Recognize who you are and how you fit into the community.
That's it.
RIKKI: If you have a goal,
if you want to meet that goal,
you have to be more open minded.
Because not everyone is perfect.
Not everyone is at the same level as you are.
CHRISSY: You aren't superior or
less of value for your experiences.
RIKKI: Hopefully, you learned something today.
Hopefully, you enjoyed the video.

Busan Map, Torbjorn Rework, & More Coming Soon! (Upcoming Overwatch Content & Updates) - Duration: 7:11.
What's up everybody this is Master Ian Gamer and today I'm going to talk about the many
important Overwatch updates and changes which we're going to be seeing pretty soon.
These include the new Busan map hitting live servers, the Torbjorn and Rialto reworks,
as well as the mysterious third new social feature.
So in this video I'm going to discuss what we know regarding these new updates, as well
as when we can expect to see each of them in game.
If you end up enjoying this video then be sure to Like, Sub, and hit the bell for more
Overwatch content.
Anyways, first up let's discuss the most immediate new content update, which is the
Busan Control map.
As we all know, this map was first revealed back in August, and was subsequently added
to the PTR.
At the time of me making this video, that was about three weeks ago, which also just
so happens to be the approximate amount of time that most new content additions remain
on the PTR before hitting live servers.
Now, looking at past maps which have been added, the longest a new map ever remained
on the PTR was Blizzard World, which took a total of 64 days to reach the live servers.
On the other extreme though, the most recently added map before Busan, being Rialto, only
sat on the PTR for 14 days.
However, given the map's imbalance, which I'll be talking more about in just a minute,
I think it's safe to say that this time frame was a little… shorter than it should
have been.
Getting new content to console players and those who can't access the PTR is important
and all, but not when we get things so unbalanced that Blizzard needs to go back and fix theme
later.
So, assuming that Blizzard wants to wait at least three weeks, Busan could be hitting
the PTR as early as this week, although I believe that it may turn out to be just slightly
longer.
Unless Blizzard officially announces its release date today, which, honestly could happen,
they're probably going to want at least a decent amount of time between announcement
and release.
We saw this happen with Wrecking Ball's release earlier this past summer, so there's
a good chance it'll happen again with Busan.
I would recommend planning to have it go live sometime next week, and that way if it does
come earlier, then it'll be a pleasant surprise!
Also there's a number of minor hero balance changes which will be accompanying Busan in
this same update.
I won't go into detail on them here, but if you want more information then I'll include
a card on screen to my video where I cover them in depth.
Now, while staying on the topic of new maps, let's talk about the Rialto rework.
Out of the different updates I'm going to mention today, this is the one which we'll
have to wait the longest for.
The reason being is that, relative to the other updates, this one was the most recent
to be announced, and based off of how long the Horizon rework was in development, it
could actually be some time before we see the fix for Rialto.
Now, based off of Jeff Kaplan's post about the map on the forums, Blizzard seemingly
has a few minor tweaks in mind which should suffice, but I wouldn't be surprised if
it ends up requiring more.
Going by the map stats he posted here, Rialto has an average 42.88% Attacker win rate.
Given that all maps ideally should have 50% for both Attackers and Defenders, this is
more than a little off.
In fact, comparing it to the win rates for the original Horizon, that map had 45.5% Defenders
win rate, meaning that currently, Rialto is significantly less balanced than Horizon was
back before it got reworked.
While we'll have to wait and see what all Blizzard has in store for saving Rialto, it
is the one thing which I don't think we'll necessarily see happening before the end of
this month.
And if we do see anything, it'll likely just be developer updates regarding the rework.
But, moving on now to a much more immediate change, we have the long time coming Torbjorn
rework.
Being the third major hero rework in recent Overwatch history, the first official confirmation
that he'd be getting a bit of love was announced more than seven months ago now, way back in
February.
Since then we have gotten some tidbits of information regarding the direction Blizzard
has in mind for him.
Mainly it seems that their goal is to make him more viable on offense, and part of this
includes increasing the efficiency of turret deployment and upgrading, along with either
significant changes or the entire replacement of his Molten Core ultimate.
Again, I won't go into tremendous detail regarding what we know about the changes here,
but if you're interested then I'll include a card on screen linking to my video on it.
Now as for the timeline of when we can expect to see this rework in game or at the very
least on PTR, it should be pretty soon.
One reason for this is simply how long Blizzard has been working on it and what they've
said.
For example, the currently known details of the rework were announced all the way back
in July, so if Blizzard at least had a remotely clear idea of what they wanted back then,
it's likely that they've made good progress by this point.
Now, the amount of time passed doesn't guarantee that it'll be soon, as other things could
have caused it to be delayed, and we simply don't know what all Blizzard is working
on internally.
However, another good indicator that it'll be soon comes from how Overwatch dev Scott
Mercer responded to a question about the the rework at the Overwatch Fan Festival.
The way he skeptically says he "didn't think it'd be in the next patch", presumably
referring to the same patch as Busan, indicates that Blizzard must be close to wrapping up
the rework.
That means it could very well be in the next patch following Busan, but if not then than
almost certainly in the one after that.
Either way, I'm confident that there will be new details on it if not the rework itself
on the PTR by the end of this month.
Now this brings us to the last major imminent update, which is the third and final new in
game social system.
I'm sure nearly everyone is familiar with this upcoming feature by now, but, having
been given a late summer, early fall release window, it's a bit surprising that we haven't
heard anything more about this feature since the addition of Endorsements and LFG back
in June.
Like the Torbjorn rework, we could easily see it in the patch following Busan.
However, as for what exactly this new social feature will be, I have to say that the most
likely thing is some kind of guild or clan system.
The game could certainly stand to benefit from a social feature like this, and I actually
made a whole video recently exploring the idea of Overwatch clans and what all they
could do for the game.
If you haven't seen that video, then you can check it out through the card on screen.
Overall, there are a lot of exciting new updates and changes coming to Overwatch that we can
expect to see pretty soon.
Following the conclusion of the Nano Cola Challenge mini event, Blizzard will need to
say or do something to catch people's interest again, so even if we don't get further news
on any of these four things I talked about today, we'll almost certainly be seeing
something!
But, let me know down in the comments below what you're excited for most in the near
future of Overwatch.
We just recently got that leak for the upcoming Halloween event, so maybe even that's what's
got your interest.

updates on these topics!

Lies You've Always Believed About The Lord Of The Rings - Duration: 5:19.
Thanks in part to the smash success of Peter Jackson's movie trilogy, The Lord of the
Rings can now be easily counted among the most prolific and impactful cultural phenomenons
of all time.
Despite this, however, many fans of J.R.R.
Tolkien's legendary tale continue to believe a number of misconceptions about the story's
world and characters.
Here are a few lies you might still believe about The Lord of the Rings, and Middle Earth
in general.
What it means to be a wizard
Okay, so Gandalf is actually technically a wizard, but he's not the kind you might be
used to.
He's not a wizard in the sense that, say, the kids at Hogwarts are wizards.
He didn't show aptitude for magic as a child and go to wizarding school and learn spells
from a dusty old book.
No, Gandalf is less of what you'd consider a wizard and more of what you'd consider
a demigod.
The Valar are essentially the pantheon of gods in Tolkien's universe.
It was they who sent Gandalf to Middle-Earth from Valinor, along with Saruman, Radagast
and two other wizards who never really showed up in any of the books.
"And the aptly named: Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Film."
These wizards originally existed as beings called Maiar, who acted as servants to the
Valar.
Before being sent to Middle-Earth, they were made to look human and given magical and physical
abilities beyond those held by normal men or even elves.
They had existed on Middle-Earth for thousands of years prior to the events of The Lord of
the Rings, too as well, hence why they're so knowledgeable about the world.
Gandalf's status as a Maia is also why he's resurrected after his fight with the Balrog:
it's not some wizard's spell which brings him back, but the will of the Valar themselves.
Denethor's villainy
In Peter Jackson's Return of the King, Denethor is portrayed as a vengeful and cowardly madman
who acts largely as an antagonist to Gandalf and Faramir during the MinasTirith storyline.
"Authority is not given to you to deny the return of the king, Steward."
"The rule of Gondor is mine!"
In the novel, however, Tolkien makes it clear that Denethor wasn't driven mad by a lust
for power or fear of war.
Instead, Denethor was tormented by an outside influence: a Palantir.
The Palantir are the magical orbs once used by the elves as a means of communication and
wielded, in The Lord of the Rings, by Sauron, Saruman, and Denethor.
Prior to the events of the trilogy, Denethor had begun using his Palantir in an attempt
to ferret out information which he could use in the war against Sauron.
Instead, Sauron's own influence on the Palantir slowly drove him mad.
The notion that Denethor lost his mind trying to save his people brings a whole new level
of tragedy to his character, something which is never really made clear in Peter Jackson's
trilogy.
The isolation of men
Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Lord of the Rings might give you the impression that
Gondor and Rohan were the only flashpoints in the end stages of the War of the Ring,
but this is far from true.
The reality is briefly alluded to in the extended edition of Return of the King, but the movie
leaves out most of the details.
"Your kinsmen may have no need to ride to war.
I fear way already marches on their own lands."
The appendices to The Lord of the Rings make it clear that, while Sauron's army was laying
siege to Minas Tirith, the elves, dwarves and other men of Middle-Earth were attempting
to defend their own lands against invasion.
Sauron's armies at Dol Guldur [gul-DOOR] attempted to invade Galadriel's realm of Lorien three
times, but failed.
Meanwhile, Thranduil, king of the wood elves, was waging a largely successful war against
the orcs in Mirkwood.
The men of Dale weren't quite as lucky.
Sauron's armies attacked the city during the Third War and thoroughly overwhelmed its
defenders.
The survivors took shelter in the Lonely Mountain with their dwarven allies and just barely
held out under siege before the Ring was finally destroyed.
King Brand of Dale, the grandson of The Hobbit's Bard, was killed during the battle, as was
the dwarven king, Dain Ironfoot.
Hobbit feet
At some point in time it became an unquestionable fact that hobbit feet aren't just hairy
and tough, but are also disproportionately large.
The truth is, however, that Tolkien never wrote anything about hobbit feet being particularly
big.
In The Fellowship of the Ring, hobbits are described as having "tough leathery soles"
and being "clad in a thick curling hair", but no mention is made of their size.
Sean Astin, who played Samwise Gamgee in Peter Jackson's movie adaptations, appears to have
been in favour of a more faithful interpretation of hobbit feet.
On the special features for the extended edition of The Fellowship of the Ring, Jackson revealed
that Astin, frustrated at the time it took to apply the hobbits' foot prosthetics,
kept him up to date on his personal tally of how many days the prosthetics were applied,
versus how many days the feet appeared in shot.
