Glaucoma: Minimally invasive surgery

Glaucoma is a group of diseases characterized primarily by damage to the optic nerve,

which may result in irreversible blindness.

Currently there are new treatments that are minimally invasive,

that can significantly improve the patients' quality of life.

On the advanced treatments of glaucoma, in the following video.

Glaucoma is a group of diseases characterized by intraocular pressure.

Up till now, we treated glaucoma as increased intraocular pressure

and now we know that the intraocular pressure is just a risk factor.

Glaucoma is the number two cause of loss of vision after cataract,

when glaucoma can be diagnosed early.

There are several types of glaucoma:

open angle glaucoma, which is characterized in Israel.

closed angle glaucoma, which limits the drainage of the excretory eye fluid

Congenital glaucoma and also secondary glaucoma, that can be secondary to trauma or inflammation.

There are several risk factors for glaucoma,

first and foremost, intraocular pressure or increased intraocular pressure,

age, ethnicity, and also family history is a substantial risk factor for developing glaucoma.

The primary and routine treatment of glaucoma is treatment with drops, topical treatment,

while there are other treatments such as laser treatment to reduce intraocular pressure

research having shown us that treatment with drops, and also laser treatment can be as effective.

The next stage sometimes requires intervention.

The routine intervention or the conservative surgery poses numerous risks and complications,

and that is why medicine or ophthalmology has recently developed minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries,

or mini-invasive surgeries that facilitate safe, effective surgeries,

that allow the patient to resume his routine fairly quickly.

One of the latest innovations in the area of minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries

is a breakthrough surgery, XEN implant implantation surgery.

The XEN implant is a 6 mm long implant,

made of gelatin and facilitates drainage of fluids from the eye outward.

The XEN implant as glaucoma surgery that is minimally invasive,

provides us with a safe and effective surgery for the reduction of intraocular pressure.

Contrary to the invasive surgeries, the XEN implant allows us to achieve an intraocular pressure,

much like that of the invasive glaucoma surgeries

without the risks and complications that exist in the routine invasive glaucoma surgeries.

The possible complications in a conservative glaucoma surgery in trabeculectomy such as low intraocular pressure,

accumulation of fluids under the retina and reduced vision acuity,

do not occur in the XEN surgery, but if they do occur in this innovative surgery,

they are limited in duration and resolve on their own.

The XEN surgery facilitates intraocular efficacy like the conservative surgery,

without the risks and complications that exist ,in the trabeculectomy surgery,

Resuming one's routine being a very significant factor in this surgery, routine is resumed quickly

and sometimes, within a week the operated persons resume their daily activities.

A 230ft tunnel next to Sainsbury's is Cornish resort's top attraction - Duration: 8:38.

A plastic tunnel attached to the side of a Sainsbury's supermarket is the highest rated TripAdvisor attraction in a pretty seaside resort

The 230ft structure has attracted more than 170 comments with visitors jokingly calling it 'one of the seven wonders' and likening it to the Taj Mahal

The undercover walkway in Bude, Cornwall, has had people travelling from all over the UK to have their picture taken inside, who then leave glowing reviews

One user said he was considering booking it for his Christmas dinner, but isn't sure about the 'dress code'  and others compare it to the Sistine Chapel and the ruins of Pompeii

It is now ranked as the first of 51 attractions in the town, with 173 reviews and counting, with 88 per cent giving it the top 5 stars

Reviewer Rachel L from Chelmsford, who gave the tunnel a four-star rating wrote on Trip Advisor: 'We recently visited the tunnel with our four children and found it was great for a wet day out in Bude

 'We also had their grandparents with us and even they had a good time looking around at a more leisurely pace and talking to the friendly locals

Just wish it had a gift shop!'Paul S, who gave it top marks on TripAdvisor and said: 'We travelled four hours to see the tunnel after reading reviews and have to say it was everything we had hoped

'Consisting of 36 metal arches and over 70m long, nowhere else in Bude can you walk this far undercover in a continuous straight line, all ages are welcome

'The opening times of the tunnel are listed as being 00.00 to 23.59 and visitors are advised that visits should take less than one hour - two at the most

The person who originally listed the tunnel, who wishes to remain anonymous, said they did so because it was 'one I have admired for a while', and they 'never thought that it would become this popular'

They have also been selling postcards depicting the tunnel in the town to raise money for the Bude Sea Pool, a popular attraction

They said: 'It's been a great talking point in the town, and one that seems to have brought everyone together

That's fantastic.'It's great that as well as being a bit of fun, it will raise a little bit of money for one of the town's real attractions

'The tunnel links shoppers from the Sainsbury's supermarket to the car park, protecting them from the rain

A Sainsbury's spokesperson said: 'It's clear that visitors to Bude have seen the light at the end of this tunnel

' However, not everyone has welcomed the hilarious reviews.Donna from Derby gives a three-star rating and states: 'I didn't realise that this was an attraction

'As we only thought it was a under cover walk way to get to Sainsbury's. A bit confused that people find it to be an attraction rather than a walk way

'And Melissa P adds: 'Folks I'm not even sure why this has been created as a place! It's a Perspex tunnel at the side of a supermarket - we did use it as the Sainsbury's car park is free for 90 mins so it came in handy but i wouldn't go out of your way to visit and I certainly don't think it's of any architectural importance

'Mark Hibbard, from Bude Area Tourist Board, said reviews people read online were unregulated and the town 'has so much to offer visitors'

He added: 'I hope that the Bude Tunnel being rated as the number one attraction in Bude does not become detrimental to the 'real' things to do and visit in our town

'
