Buffy Guide S04E18

Where the Wild Things Are

Given where we're headed in terms of content, Five By Five with Angel and Restless and Buffy

Season 5, it behooves me to attack my resistance to getting this particular review done.

Where the Wild Things Are is a regular staple on Buffy worst-of lists.

But I don't think I would put it in the top 10 worst by any stretch.

Doomed was technically broke it's bad-episode's moment of redemption, which I've argued

ANY episode of Buffy has, wasn't really better than Where the Wild Things Are.

But boy is Wild Things a mess.

Let me see if we can distill something from the chaos.

Buffy and Riley are out patrolling when Buffy pretty much sums up what the episode is like

for us the audience.

"You get fang.

I'll get horny."

They return to the frat house to bangarang each other.

There's a long tracking shot of the frat with ominous music to suddenly suggest something

is afoot.

Even though we've had this set for 18 episodes now.

Riley gets up for a shirtless wander and nothing happens.

After his brief stint as a pizza delivery guy Xander is now driving an ice cream truck.

There are a couple of really fun details to this little scene.

The music from his truck is written in a minor key and sounds to me like a variation on the

Halloween theme:

It's effectively unnerving and introduces the idea into our subconscious that something

creepy might be going on.

And it does so much more elegantly and creatively than the previous on the nose tracking shot

shot through the fraternity.

101

I also noticed on the dashboard a toy from the Giant Insects Collection.

At this point the Xand-man must have some seriously WEIRD fetishes

The two of them missed an evening of sexy time and Anya thinks it's a herald for the

end of the relationship.

It's likely that being a vengeance demon didn't give her an overly positive perspective

on love's staying power.

Good thing she's with dependable Xander.

Xander traumatizes some small children.

"Hot sweaty big sex."

The Scoobies sans Xander are debriefing Giles over the events of the previous evening and

tell him there's a party tonight.

Oddly I admire Riley drawing the line with Giles that the party will go on.

"As much as I long for a good kegger, I have plans tonight at the Espresso Pump."

That evening, Buffy and Riley are at it again which causes a supernatural event in the living

room.

More on-the-nose metaphors for watching this episode.

Spike has been scaring people into giving him money and he fails with Anya.

A: Oh now come on.

You're not even bumpy anymore.

Spike and Anya don't have many scenes together but when they do the two of them have some

terrific chemistry.

S: You know, you take the killing for granted.

And when it's gone you're like...I wish I'd appreciated it more.

Back at the the party one of the snobby dorks from Beer Bad who is hitting on another partygoer,

touches a wall and has an orgasm, after which the woman he's with has a dramatically understated

reaction.

Of course as this is a group of highly trained military men the dude brings the matter up

to Riley IMMEDIATELY and shuts the party down.

I'm just kidding, he invites more friends to touch it, not warning them to bring a change

of shorts.

You can argue that the soldiers were spell drunk, but the drunkness strikes me as perfectly

convenient for the plot as Spike, Anya, Xander, Forrest, Willow, and a number of other people

still seem untouched.

And yet there's a large group of people standing around here watching each other set

off fireworks in their pants.

Having had a fight Anya, Xander starts hitting on another woman at the party in front of

the trophy case.

You can read into that one if you want to.

Anya shows up with Spike

"Anya this is crazy.

We had a little fight.

It just means we have to work our way through some stuff.

It doesn't mean that we rebound with the evil undead."

You were JUST hitting on the redhead at the trophy case.

XANDER.

I'm not sure why but this whole situation feels oddly familiar.

*Season 6 flash forward

We'll just sum up a big chunk of the next few scenes by saying wacky sexy haunted hijinx

ensue.

This woman has like fifteen turns on the wall.

Jeez lady.

Don't be a selfish waller.

Kissing Xander makes the redhead want to cut her own hair off.

Etc etc.

The Scoobs try and rouse Buffy but she and Riley are unreachable.

This shot showing their magical and sexual isolation is on the very short list of things

I really love about this episode.

It's haunting and beautiful and something I remember when I think about the series,

even when I can't remember much about this plot.

The gang goes to find Giles for help and, in the midst of this ridiculous episode, we

get one of the greatest scenes in the series.

"Now I remember why I used to have such a crush on

him."

Episode guide with locker image *"Raise your hand if ew"

Bit of research and it turns out the frat used to be a orphanage run by an anti-sex

religious type.

Turns out the haunting was caused by the masturbatory urges of the adolescent orphans that were

suppressed by the old lady.

Gross.

But...I...GUESS you can hear some of the Season 1 and 2 themes in this one, albeit confusingly

inverted.

It's..It's just a mess.

They perform a spell to sap the sexy mojo.

Anya wakes up Biley and everything returns to normal.

Where the Wild Things Are is named after the Maurice Sendak book by the same name.

In the story, a child is sent to bed without dinner for refusing to take off his wolf costume.

He ends up in a mysterious jungle where he is so ferocious, the actual monsters known

as Wild Things name him king.

However he starts to feel lonely and returns home to find dinner waiting for him in his

bedroom.

Sendak has said that the term Wild Things was inspired by the yiddish term, Vilde Chaya,

used to indicate "boisterous children."

So in this one you have the connection to the book through the jungle and children along

with the double entendre of Buffy and Riley being horny wild things that can't stop

wombo comboing each other.

It's all very weird, tacky, and a little gross.

Something feels off about naming an episode fueled by mediocre but neverending college

sex after a children's book.

Anyway I believe that's the framework of this one but whoooo boy does it not really come

together into anything interesting.

I'm not entirely sure how the sexy sex sexxing applies to the season's themes because the

episode is somehow both pro and anti sex.

There are a lot of good lines and wonderful bits from characters that the writers obviously

now know flat.

But the episode amounts to those characters being entertaining while they wander around

inside an plot that never finds itself.

I thought it was interesting that if you removed the necessary details of the episode's plot

COMPLETELY, whatever was left would be all the good stuff this one has to offer.

And everything you took away except this shot would be tedious and uninteresting.

Including some very, very, very boring sex between Riley and Buffy.

"You're too far away from me."

NO.

He ISN'T.

That same bi-section would also apply to Doomed which I find, even more egregious than this

one by virtue of its technical issues.

There are a few good musical cues here, but the fact that many of them are reused from

better episodes that I'd rather be watching like Helpless actually take me out of this

one more than pull me into it.

Maybe you can read some religious symbolism in the thorns that keep Buffy and Riley doing

the thing with their stuff, and the rigid old testament religion of the former orphanage

overseer.

But anyway we try and examine it, this one still ends up being a hot piping mess.

The show isn't afraid to retread the same topics from time to time and occasionally

revisiting ideas from different angles develops those ideas farther and generates surprising

results.

But we've already covered the haunted house genre this season with the much more engaging

episode, Fear, Itself.

The idea of using a haunted house to explore the individual fears and personalities of

the Scoobies directly was clever and...kinda beautiful.

NEWT's 2018 Wrap Up Parte2 - Duration: 8:07.

Hey everyone, I hope you're doing well! This is the 2nd part of my NEWT's readathon wrap up.

You don't have to see them in order but if you missed the first one, it's linked her and in the description box.

And here I'm going to talk about the subjects I took from which I didn't do all 3 grades

but maybe 1 or 2 for each of these.

The first one is Arithmancy. I managed 2 grades: Acceptable and Exceed expectations. A and E.

For Acceptable we had to read a book of at least 300 pages.

And for Exceed expectations we had to read a book that ended in an even number.

For Acceptable I listened to the audiobook of To all the boys I've loved before.

Because the movie was coming out on Netflix, and I obviously wanted to know the story beforehand.

And unfortunately I didn't like the book.

I found the main character quite annoying. And I disagreed with many many of her reactions and behaviours.

But... I did like the movie. It was very well adapted. And, for my taste, I feel like they improved the main character.

I know this book is very loved, but this was my opinion. So I'm not keeping up with the other 2.

Because it is a trilogy.

The book for Exceed expectations was: The little book of skin care by Charlotte Cho.

I loved this book, I gave it 5 stars. Oh to the first one I gave 2 stars.

But I loved the Skin Care one, because in this book we learn the care they keep in South Korea for their skin.

And I loved that it not only explained the steps you need to take to have a healthy skin,

but also how to do so, with recommendations for each skin type, for brands, how to recognize your skin type.

It explains what are for all those products that when you get to the store, at least this was my case,

that I went in and got overwhelmed with the amount of essence and toner and primer and, what are those for? No idea.

But now, thanks to this book, I know. It was actually the last one I read

I've been following every step of the book. And even though I've only done it for 3 days, I do feel my skin a bit different.

I don't know if it's available in spanish, but the english is not difficult.

Apart from maybe some concepts for products that with a google search you'll know what it is.

So I really recommend it.

For Ancient Runes I read the Acceptable grade which had to be a book set in the past.

And that was A (The) Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue.

Oh my God! What a beautiful book! Here's the cover.

And this cover was the reason it took me so long to pick up this book because, honestly...

when I saw this cover I didn't feel it would be a book I would like

I felt it was going to be something more teen.

But no! This book, aside from being set in the 18th century.

I believe it was the 18th century.

The plot is very addictive. The language... I don't know if I said I read it. I listened to it on audiobook.

Which by the way it's beautiful. The narrator is the actor who plays Tom Riddle in the Chamber of Secrets.

And his voice is perfect. He has different voices for each character. And I loved it and now want the physical copy.

Beside the sequel comes out next month!

This is one of those times where you don't have to let the cover mislead you.

I loved it and I gave it 4 stars. Four stars??

4 stars.

For transfiguration I managed the Acceptable and the Exceed expectations.

For Acceptable I read The little dictionary of fashion.

This book was written by Christian Dior, so it talks about 50's fashion. Which is one of my favorites.

And even though it's not a style I wear. I like how they looked then. I like how elegant they dressed.

And this is plainly a dictionary of fashion where it explains when an how you have to wear every piece of clothing.

From hats and gloves to underwear.

And even though there are many things that today are obsolete, there are others that could still apply

because elegance will never be out of fashion.

So I gave it 3 stars.

And the book I listened for Exceed expectations was The first fifteen lives of Harry August.

This is another one that became an all time favorite. I also have to buy this one's physical copy because...

it's amazing, and it blows your mind and it makes you think and reflect a lot about

Why are we? Why do we exist? What's the point of our lives?

What's what we're meant to do here?

It was during the first half of this book that I had to keep pausing to ponder.

And during the second half, the pace picks up and you can't stop listening or reading the story.

We follow Harry August who, after he dies, he lives again his same life.

Every time he dies, we re-lives his life.

Being able to remember everything that happened in his past lives.

So, obviously, not all his lives are identical. And even though he has the same parents and grows in the same house.

He is able to change his decisions and his life's development because he remembers his past lives.

It's amazing! If you can read it, do so, I really recommend it. I gave it 5 stars, obviously.

For Divination I took the Acceptable which had to be a book set in the future.

And I chose to re-read, through an audiobook: The hunger games by Suzanne Collins.

It's one of my favorite books that I'll keep re-reading forever. And I obviously gave it 5 stars.

For Care of Magical Creatures I took 2 grades: Acceptable and Exceed expectations.

For the first one we had to read a book with an animal on the cover.

And for the second one we had to read a book with less than 160 pages.

For the first one I listened The raven boys.

Which is a fantasy book where we follow a group of friends who are trying to uncover a secret.

This is another one I had judge by its cover, because seeing it didn't made me want to read it.

But... it's really good. And this one is completely fantasy.

But its writing style is beautiful. I mean I listened to it, but you can tell, you can listen the beautiful narration.

I gave it 4 stars.

For Excees expectations I read Fika.

It's a book about Fika... Which is a Swiss term

which is part of a living style where things are balanced. You don't need to have more or less of something.

Fika is basically the activity of going for coffee, regularly sided by something sweet.

With friends or alone, but giving that time to yourself and to drinking coffee or tea if you're more a tea person.

This is a tiny book. It has that description. It comes with quotes about coffee

And at the end it comes with recipes for coffe, tea and this warm wine they take in winter.

Also various recipes for snacks that can go with these drinks.

It's cute, it's a cozy book. I gave it 3 stars.

And lastly, for Muggle Studies I took the Acceptable which had to be a book by one of your favorite authors.

I chose to re-read, through an audiobook: Pride and Prejudice

This time in english. And I had never read this one in english. I had only...

Ah! the battery is about to die.

I had only read it in spanish, but I loved listening to it in its original language, narrated by an English woman.

So I'm dying to buy it. And I gave it 5 stars.

Those were my final results for the NEWT´s Readathon

I you also did this readathon let me know which were your favorites and maybe also the ones you didn't like.

Thanks for watching this video, see yo//

Watson, we're going on the trip

You look beautiful :)

Hi everyone! Today we're in a forest,

we will discover some waterfalls

They're called Twin Falls

Let's go

I feel like I'm walking in polish forest ;)

really nice stones

Often I want to do vlogs

in the forest

and talk a lot

but what should I say...?

trees,

nature

It's nice

It's beautiful

wait...

you can see

It's really beautiful

I couldn't be closer to the water ;)

now I have to...

climb...

and try to not fall over :)

I can do it

I made it

I'm gonna go there now

Look!

is it good? do you like it here?

We're almost there

Apparently it was supposed to be "flat" here

but it's pretty steep

But we're still walking

This is not it yet

Over there was just a place to stop and catch a breath for people who got tired

I'm not tired at all ;)

Look at my ponytail

so wonderful

We're getting higher

I just got a "tropical mustache"

who knows what is it?

Tropical mustache

is a sweat over your mouth

Awesome

Such a jungle!

what are those ?

So there were two paths - stairs and not stairs :)

and we chose stairs

We will see if we gonna make it to waterfalls

Now we gonna see waterfalls from...

(from below? from the top? from the other side...?)

...from the top

good job Ola

It falls from there

And here is...

smaller one

it gathers the water

I wanted to interview him

but he left me because he smelled a treat

he betrayed

he betrayed me for a food :(

We're coming home

We're coming home now. It was really nice. Not too long, not too short, not too hard...

I know, best review ever :)

Yes :)

DJ Noize a DMC World Champion tries the Wireless Headphone Link Natus One for the First Time - Duration: 1:54.

Today I have a really cool meeting with a guy called Kim

Better known as DJ Noize

Kim won the DMC Championships 1996

He was a runner up two years before that

And then btw he won everything that was possible to win

DJ competition wise in Denmark in the 1990's

He is super fast! Scratch wise.. Mix wise.. etc. etc.

We are gonna meet and he is gonna try out some prototypes

I have - of Natus One

Big bulky type prototypes

But they're fully functional - has all the right specifications

The right audio quality - the right latency - features and all that stuff

It's really exciting for me to see how that's gonna work out for sure

Because, up until now I've had good DJs use this

But I haven't had super world-class scratch DJs using this stuff

So this is gonna be a real tough test - so im really excited about this

Its probably gonna be in Danish, but I'll do my best to overdub or whatever

Or do some texting or whatever, we'll figure it out

[AUDIO IS PLAYING IN THE HEADPHONES ONLY]

[THROUGH THE NATUS ONE PROTOTYPE]

[DJ Noize] Uh... Umm... Is it?

[Tino] Yup, I'm curious!

[Tino] What do you think?"´

[DJ Noize] There's no?... Umm... There's no...

[Tino] Hah, that was a pretty cool reaction man!

[DJ Noize] I mean, there's no difference between regular headphones and this.

[DJ Noize] There really isn't.

[DJ Noize] I don't know how you've done it.

[DJ Noize] I just really wanna keep it, you know?
