-My maid of honor is not happy with this dress.
-It's worse than I thought.
-So, I'm working with a designer to upgrade it for her.
Marisa has no clue. Gosh, I hope she likes this one.
-Hi, I'm Nicole. I'm getting married later this year.
-I'm Marisa and I'm the maid of honor
for my best friend Nicole's wedding.
-Marisa and I met because I watched one
of the plays that she produced here in New York.
We've been roommates for about four years now.
Our friendship is very special.
We're both from California.
We're both Filipino-American.
We are like sisters from another mister, as I like to say.
-I'm really, really lucky to have her in my life.
She just has that smile and that unicorn magic.
[Laughs]
-My favorite thing about Marisa is just how sweet and thoughtful she is.
-Do you want some tea?
-Yes.
-Everything's going great with the wedding planning,
except for the bridesmaids dress.
Guess what came in the mail yesterday!
-What?
-Your bridesmaid dress.
-Oh, my god! That's awesome!
-I know. It took forever.
Could you do me a favor?
-Yes?
-Could you try it on right now?
[Laughter]
-You're doing a lot of this. What's going on?
-I just really want to see it on you.
-Yes, yes, I will try it on. I'm excited.
I think, sometimes, bridesmaids dresses are meant to look good
on a mannequin and not so much on a real
human person, IRL, as kids call it.
You know, you don't get that wow factor from the bridesmaids;
you're supposed to get it from the bride.
Looking at myself in that dress,
I was a flood of all the things I'm most insecure about.
It's worse than I thought.
It's basically everything on the "I don't want" list.
I like my boobs,
but sometimes when you put it in
a strapless dress it's just like…
it's just a little too much.
You know, it's her day. It's not about me.
-Wow!
She walks into the living room.
I'm seeing her in the dress for the very first time,
and I think she looks beautiful.
I love it!
-My… quarterback shoulders…
I thought we were going to, you know…
-No! You don't look like a quarterback,
you look like a princess.
Marisa is—she's a little
insecure about her curviness.
She just was not feeling it.
Don't look at me like that!
-No, you're right.
I think it'll—it'll look great.
It'll look great once we tailor it.
I just feel a bit uncomfortable.
-Aw, everyone else is strapless, too.
It's not going to go with everyone else's dress
if you don't do strapless, right? So…
-I really don't like the dress
and I don't know how to bring it up to her.
-I'm super excited while we tour the venue.
-Favorite part?
-Bring on the gin, hello.
[Laughter]
-I was really nervous 'cause I don't know
how to tell Nicole that I don't like the dress.
-Check out this bridal suite!
-This is a perfect room for you to get ready.
-I can tell there is something a little off about her,
and so I sit her down, and I just plain out ask her
what's going on.
-I don't want to wear the dress.
-OK. This is my day.
-Yeah, no. And I—whatever you want.
I just know you want me to be honest
with you and that's what I'm trying to be.
And I don't feel comfortable.
-Marisa! You look beautiful in that dress.
You are beautiful.
-This conversation with Nicole is so awkward,
because I'm telling her how I'm feeling
and she's not budging at all.
-I mean, I really love the dress as is,
and you know, it is my day!
It's what I want.
-She just was being a little selfish, which was—
it's not her usual style.
-I know this is my big day,
but if my best friend is not happy,
then I'm not going to be happy.
So, today I'm meeting this amazing designer
and I asked her to help me upgrade Marisa's dress.
-My name is Shao Yang,
and I own The Tailory New York,
which is a custom clothing company.
I get commissioned to do anything from wedding dresses
to full-on suits with capes.
-Marisa has no idea about the surprise.
My maid of honor does not like the dress.
She doesn't want to do this all night
and she's insecure about her shoulders.
-Before I go into the dress,
I'm really listening to Nicole
and getting her feedback on what Marisa wanted.
I don't get a lot of fashion challenges like this one.
-She's also, like I said, my maid of honor,
so maybe if we can add something to make it pop.
-I think we can totally fix this.
Let me show you what I'm thinking.
-Perfect.
-We definitely need some support,
and we need something to kind of hold the dress up
so she feels confident enough to dance or run around,
you know, be, like, the best maid of honor.
I got to make Nicole happy,
but I also want to make Marisa happy.
It really forces you to think outside of the box.
-So, being Filipino is really important to both of us,
and I was wondering,
is there any way to incorporate our cultural heritage
in maybe an accessory or using the beads?
-Oh, yes, I have an idea.
-I wanted to bring something to the outfit that symbolizes
the indigenous people of the Philippines.
There are a lot of tribes that use beadwork
to represent royalty, and I want Marisa
to feel like royalty on my big day.
I'm nervous working with Shao,
but I know I'm in good hands.
I'm not a designer,
so I have no idea what's going to look good on Marisa,
but as long as it's unique and beautiful,
I think it's going to be great.
You nailed it.
So, I told Marisa to come here today
to help me with my bridal gown fitting.
-I'm so excited to see Nicole in her wedding dress.
-She has no idea what's really in store for her,
and I think she's going to be super surprised.
-Oh, my god! You look amazing!
Oh! Oh, my god, you look like a real bride!
-Don't! Don't cry, you're going to make me cry!
-Oh, it just… You're getting married!
-You're going to make me cry.
-Oh, sorry. Oh, wow, you look lovely.
-Thank you! -You look stunning.
-So, I know you came up here thinking
you were going to see my fitting,
but we have a surprise for you.
I know you didn't like the bridesmaids dress
that I picked for you, so I'm working with this beautiful,
talented designer, Shao Yang,
and she upgraded it.
-Oh, my god. Are you serious?
-Yes, and it's here!
Now stop crying, and get into that dressing room.
Put on that dress, OK?
I'm really kind of worried on what
she's going to think about the dress.
Oh, gosh, I hope she likes this one.
Wow, my gosh! You look so good. Come here!
Wow.
-Oh, my god.
-When I saw it I was like, "Yay!"
-Shao really nailed this dress.
I look like a superstar.
-The thing that I did I think that worked
the best was giving you some straps.
And then I just took the ruching from the bottom of the dress,
and I just created an asymmetrical strap
on the other side.
I created some back draping as well
to give you some design elements front and back.
So, I know I worked on this dress with Nicole,
but she actually has something
that she wanted to give to you.

and it fully hit me that I was getting married
