Hello all you sonsy folks and how are you today?

If you are new then my name is Mhairi and this is my channel

{Intro music}

So for today's Deaf awareness video I wanted to talk about being d/Deaf and gaming

Because I recently got back into gaming and I have noticed quite a few things

The main one being the subtitles now

Now first of all it is amazing how many games now have subtitles

When I was growing up that was not a thing. I don't think we even had subtitles on the TV till I was about

twelve?

So to see them in games would have been pretty extraordinary

I had a Sega Megadrive as I was growing up as well as a playstation

and then just normal PC games

I was a total Sonic addict

actually my entire family were total Sonic addicts

which

Didn't have any subtitles. It was just set to music so it worked great for me

but jump ahead to when I met my husband and he is a huge gamer

so he got me into quite a few games mainly online

That had captions

For the most part but not for the entire thing

Then I just kind of lost interest in gaming and found interest in other stuff

And it's only really been in the last few years that I've kind of picked

Gaming back up again

I've played the Grand Theft Auto games and some detective games that I can't remember the name of

CSI games

Harry Potter games. And I'm currently playing the Batman games which I just love

And I think the reason that my interest has returned is because there are now proper captions on games

No just captions here and there but the whole thing is captioned.

It's great!

I can actually follow the story-line now

and I know what I'm doing because I'm not missing what the characters are saying

So I do have to praise the fact that captions on games are a thing now

However

there is something that I have noticed while playing games and that is how many

Creators love to make characters talk while something else is taking place

For example: in the Grand Theft Auto games they love having the characters talk on the phone while driving

And in the Batman games, they love having full conversations take place

while Batman is beating up a bunch of thugs

Maybe it's just me. I can't concentrate on driving or fighting in the games

and reading what the characters are saying at the same time

and I'm deaf so I can't hear what the characters are saying

I need to be able to read it

Did you have any idea how confusing that is?

You're trying to avoid being killed or trying to drive to a certain spot in a set amount of time

At the same time as trying to read these tiny white words on the screen

It's impossible

Seriously, just try it once and you should see what I mean.

And it might not be important information.

It might just be the creators of the game filling the silence

But I have no idea if I'm missing important information because I'm playing the game

So is there any d/Deaf gamers out there you have tips on how I can follow these parts?

or do you guys struggle as much as I do?

finished the one that I'm currently playing and I have no idea what to play next
