Waching daily Sep 27 2018

It all starts at the question, what do you even learn in library school? My name is Peter and this is stacks and facts.

[intro music]

So I figured it was about time I made this video because y'all keep asking for it,

But the short answer is that no two MLIS degrees

look the same! And the reason for that is that, in the United States and Canada most places that hire librarians require that

you are a graduate of a program that has been accredited by the American Library Association, or the ALA, and

the accreditation process that the ALA provides to make sure that all MLIS programs are fairly consistent

provides a lot of flexibility, but it's also quite rigorous.

So I'm not gonna read through the entire accreditation process, but I will read six... that's four. Six...

(We're gonna pretend I have six fingers) requirements that they list specifically for coursework. Okay?

Okay.

But aside from that, go wild.

The way that most schools handle these requirements is that they will, basically,

have a core set of courses that address

these requirements in them and you will usually do those in the first term of your studies, and then they will sprinkle

-- that is to say, the schools -- will sprinkle things that match these requirements throughout other courses that the program offers that you will take later on.

But really outside of that core set of courses, It's up to you what your program looks like.

Which I think is pretty rad because no two librarians are going to have the same requirements,

necessarily. But if you want to know what an MLIS *can* look like, here's every class that I took, and a take-away from each, in

twenty seconds or less.

Not... not all of them. That would be like what?

1.2 seconds per class. That's not gonna... that's not gonna happen. Ok, let's let's just get to it.

[in a cowboy accent] Well Karl, you know

It's like they say: "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it double check

It sources and question its preconceived notions of what's right and wrong if the answers aren't easy enough to get to in the first place!"

Or or something.

I think that's how it goes...

Ethics Review Board, wait, what even is ethics? Is that even a thing in information science?

I don't think that's a thing. Does it count if there's no blood?

I don't think there's gonna be blood

Well, it should be fine, the experiment's gonna be fine, they should be fine.

Psychological harm ... Oh. OH. Psych--

[laden with dread]

It's not fine.

It's not fine at all!

Ok, so,

So I put the comma after the first name

Ok, and then I capitalized the first letter of the last name

But if there's more than one author than I have to determine which one gets listed first based on whoever had more

More pets before the age of 18? What? Unless their pets were invertebrates, in which case I should see section

10.2.2.2...

point a?

Wait, is is this is this RDA or is this AACR2?

MARC!

[seductively] Hey there, you uh, you want to see my Gantt chart?

[very unseductively] Yeah, no, it's it's pretty great,

I think I was able to divvy up the work so that no single

person is a point of failure,

And I think the timing should be good! So we don't have to worry about going over budget. Yeah, no! It's purple!

Oh hello there, I was wondering if you had a moment to spare to talk about design heuristics

Have you heard the good word from our Lord and Savior, Jakob Nielsen? Here, let me just leave this with you.

Alright and then this should be the last thing...

And... execute!

[deadpan] Perfect.

Alright, and as you can see we are slowly killing our planet and giving up any sense of privacy

we might enjoy so that we can afford to buy these machines, that have been designed to draw our attention from otherwise useful things.

Because capitalism. All right. Thanks for coming to my TED talk, any questions?

Yeah you in the red with the hammer, and then you with the sickle.

Wait wait, so what you're saying, is that by having overdue fines,

we're actually keeping people affected by poverty from coming to the library in the first place?

EVEN THOUGH they're the folks who could use our services the most? And we don't actually get significant amount from fines anyways?

Okay, so then...

Why do we have fines?

Hello fellow, youths I also am young like you! Would you like to see some dank memes?

behold

Okay, but like those are some pretty dank memes. Like, seriously.

No, I get that we're designing Tinder for dogs

But like, just because the focus group says that we should only have pictures of tennis balls and bones...

I don't think that's a good idea.

Yeah, no, it's it's absurd. No-- butts is fine! I told you before, butts is fine, but tennis balls? don't be ridiculous!

[incredulous] Can you believe this guy?

Tennis balls?

Now I know you thought your library's databases looked good before but just wait till you see ...

The SQL.

When it comes to government corruption, I guess what they say is true! Sometimes sunlight *is* the best disinfectant!

[the sound of furious "typing" but lets be real, I'm just tapping keys]

[offscreen] Peter we get that you really like YouTube, but we did a survey and aside from you and 343 people named Katherine

(which we're not gonna get into right now),

No one else wants an entire row just for books and movies by John Green.

No, and that's that's totally fine. Because his brother Hank actually just released a book too. Besides. Look I made a Gantt chart!!

[spooky whispering] If you build it, and add robust metadata,

develop consistent and appropriate digitization standards,

and secure funding, they will come. Maybe.

What?!

Wait, so you mean to tell me I can study whatever the heck I want for an entire term as long as I can just

find a faculty member to sign off on it?!

[guffaw] Well, let me tell you a thing about YouTube!

So that's what my MLIS looks like! But it's probably gonna be a little bit heavier on tech than most people's, just because that's

what my background is in.

Now if you want to know more about these courses that I mentioned, check out the links in the dooblydoo --

I put links to the actual descriptions from the school. They are

Actually really good classes. I really enjoyed all of them.

So, have a look! If you'd like to learn more about what I was looking for when I was looking for MLIS programs to apply to

or if you want to understand a little bit more about the sticky ethics of requiring a master's degree to become a librarian or

if you want to know what accreditation looks like a little bit in more in-depth,

Subscribe by clicking the button down there? Yeah, still there.

Yeah, it's still there and click the bell to get notifications whenever I upload a new video, which is about twice a week.

Anyways, that's all I've got. So as always, thank you for watching -- and until next time, don't forget to ask questions. Okay. bye!

Did you talk to our neighbor, aunt Gönül?

My chuck...

Why didn't you tell me about the cleaning job? Why did you hide it from me?

Because I don't want you to clean other people's houses.

That's not a nice job.

What kind of a job is that?

- Not a very good one. - My chuck, come over here.

Every job done with integrity, is a good job, honey.

I've always worked in good jobs so far.

You'd remember, when I was at the clothing atelier,

when we were running our bakery...

when I was the maid...

and even the cleaning lady!

These has no difference at all, dear.

I would even clean toilets, just to provide for us!

And it would be the cleanest money on the earth.

Because it's well deserved money for an honest living.

What really matters is not the job you do,

but it's how you're doing it.

- Did you get me, honey? - I did, mom.

- Well done, my smart girl! - Mom, I'm sorry for hiding this from you.

Don't mind, sweetie.

- Since you got it, no problem here. - But I have to ask you something.

So what are we going to do with the ingredients for the cookies?

They sure will turn into cookies, you smart thing!

- Chef Elif, to the kitchen right now! Go ahead! - Come on then!

The Most Important Question Ever - Duration: 14:21.

What's up YouTube Chris Boyer here

Welcome back to my channel and welcome to a brand new video today

I just I had a very important question to ask

Probably the single most important question that anybody could ever ask themselves and that is

Who

Was Jesus of Nazareth now? Hold on before you before you click out of this video?

Just just just hear me out for just a second. I'm not gonna take up too much of your time, but I just I

Want to talk directly to the skeptic to be honest

Directly to the skeptic the person that for whatever reason has not accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior

Perhaps maybe hasn't thought about it or

Maybe has thought about it, but has looked into the evidence is not convinced for whatever reason doesn't find it compelling

What have you?

Or maybe the agnostic who is open-minded to it, but still yet to be convinced

But I do want you to be aware of something

you know everybody has

Presuppositions and I want you to be aware of your own presuppositions

prior to me becoming a Christian I

Believed that God it was possible that God existed

I believed very early on. I know I accepted Jesus Christ

But I started to doubt that belief in my early 20s and

Started questioning the truth of Christianity

Because it claimed exclusivity and it was the only way and

so on and so forth and

I started

seriously asking myself very

What I believe to be pretty important questions at the time the meaning of life the purpose of life

You know, why am I here?

Where did I come from? Where am I going?

those sorts of things and

For some reason I kept getting drawn back to this Christian faith that I that I embraced as a child

But I

Needed to know that it was more than just

Something that I accepted on on faith and

If he accepted on faith that's perfectly fine. There's nothing wrong with that

But to me, I needed a little bit more than that. I needed some reasons. I needed some arguments

I needed some evidence. I needed some some some

Some some truth

To the Christian claims and I started looking into that and I got into apologetics and that sort of thing so

For me it was going into it

Obviously I believed it could be true but I wanted to

Test whether it actually was true or not

so my

Presuppositions were pretty open-minded, you know, my mind wasn't made up obviously prior to looking at the evidence

So I

Guess for an unbeliever, that would be more of an agnostic position

But I want to know for the skeptic listening right now. I want to know

Why have you not accepted Christ as Lord and Savior

and

If you haven't I want to know

If you're aware of your presuppositions, or do you already have your mind made up prior to?

Looking at the evidence and the arguments because I have evidence. I had there are good reasons. There's plenty of evidence

arguments and

and good reasons to believe that the Christ was who he claimed to be but what I want to know is

Why you?

Don't accept

The claims of Christ why you don't accept the truth of Christianity

I'm curious

That's that's that's really all I wanted to know

um

You know

I pray and I hope that you're aware of these presuppositions because if you already do have your mind made up

I've heard some people tell me that there is nothing that I could do. There's no evidence that

That would be good enough to convince them that the Christ was was God incarnate

And you know that to me that's a very

unreasonable

untenable position I

Think it's not rational whatsoever

You know an atheist generally they want to be beacons of reason and rationality and that sort of thing

But how is that reasonable? How is that rational?

So I want to know you know, what are your reasons now? Are you looking for reasons to not believe?

Because I think that that could be a presupposition as well. You've already had your mind made up prior to looking at the evidence

Do you already have your mind made up that Christ isn't who he claimed to be?

Or God doesn't exist because that's going to determine where you end up

It's not facts

Gregg Bahnson said this this best.i. They facts don't determine what people will believe

They don't if that were the case and everybody would be believed the same thing

people's presuppositions determine where they end up

If facts determine what we believed there would be no flat earthers

There would be other religions the

Point is that facts do not determine what we believe

Faith and

presuppositions

determine what we will believe so I'm curious to know if

You know what? Your presuppositions are

That's what I want to know, do you already have your mind made up

because if so, I

Mean, I feel sorry for you. There's really nothing that anybody can do for you. There's there's no evidence

There's no reasons God could come down

You know and appear in your in your bedroom and that it's not gonna be

good enough to convince you that God exists and

It's a very untenable and irrational position. I think

um

Hopefully you're not in that boat I

Hope you're not if you do if you are open-minded if you do want reasons and evidence and arguments, I'm telling you right now

There is plenty of that on the Christian side of the table plenty of that

If you want that I can give that to you

If you don't want that, well, then you find yourself in the same position as Thomas Nagel who said and I'm paraphrasing

Let me paraphrase please before somebody says something dumb in the comments seriously

these internet warriors

internet warrior infidels

Who get all brave and Brody in the comment section on YouTube videos, you're a joke, you're a clown seriously

Identify yourself below please do that

Cuz you're a joke

but let me just please just paraphrase Thomas Nagel and he said

that

What what bothered him was that there was very intelligent people who were Christians who were believers and

That bothered him because they were intelligent people

But he couldn't bring himself to accept that because he didn't want to accept it

he didn't want to live in a universe like that where God exists is that you I

Really want to know do you find yourself?

Hoping or wanting there not to be a God

As if that's the case

That's a presupposition that is going to determine where you end up

There's no reasons. There's no evidence. There's nothing that is going to be good enough to convince you otherwise

because of that strongly held

presupposition

Faith and presuppositions is the basis for how we reason

So

However if you are open minded

to evidence and

arguments I

Suggest you look at the claims of Christ and you ask yourself if you think it's possible that God could exist

I think it's only fair that you ask yourself

Could this God?

Be manifest and the person of Jesus Christ

Could Jesus Christ Jesus of Nazareth be who he claimed to be God? Incarnate come to inaugurate God's kingdom on earth

died for sins

Will come again create a new heavens and new earth and right all wrong in

the eternal state

Could that be the case?

If it could be the case

Then I with an open heart and open mind. I I just suggest that you look into the evidence

The single most important question that anybody can ever ask themselves is who was Jesus of Nazareth?

and

I pray that your presuppositions do not hinder you from answering that question, honestly

Because the consequences are profound they are eternal the implications are profound

So

If you are on the fence if you are open-minded

Just ask yourself

the most important question that anybody ought to ask themselves and that is

Who was Jesus of Nazareth?

and the

Answer to that question is the only difference between

You and me

That's it nothing more nothing less I simply believe as a Christian that Christ was who he claimed to be

You can caricature Christians. However you want

You can make up whatever you want

but I simply and

Wholeheartedly believe that Christ was who he claimed to be that's it. That's it and

I have good reasons to believe that

Maybe they're not convincing to you. That's fine. I want to know why leave them in the comments below and

perhaps it's because you have presuppositions that are precluding you from following the evidence where it leads and

If you don't have that issue

Because I don't know that anything can help you with that

Obviously God changing your heart

which is

possible and

Granted he's done that

on several occasions

But for the person that is is open-minded and is on the fence if you haven't already

Look into the evidence and ask yourself. Is it possible to God exists and

If you can even if you cannot say a hundred percent that it is impossible that he does not exist

Then it's possible it's certainly possible that he's revealed himself in history

it's certainly possible that he has revealed himself in the person of Jesus Christ and

The way that you answer that question

Will determine if you're a Christian or not, it's gonna determine your destiny

And I

Hope that if you look into it with a sincere open and honest heart

That you will follow the evidence where it leads and I'm convinced that

You will have great reasons to believe that indeed. He was who he claims to be

And

I'll rejoice right next to you as a fellow brother and sister in Christ. And if not,

Please let me know in the comments below

That's really all I had for this video. I love you guys. I'll see you in the next one. God bless

Mom, I couldn't ask around Hümeyra, but there's something wrong with you.

- Kerem, we really need to talk. - Alright, tell me.

Not in here, let's go to my room.

Go in.

- Mom, what's going on? I'm getting pretty nervous. - Son, you're right, so right.

But I don't want anyone to hear this, except you.

What, who shouldn't hear it?

Wasn't that the list of scholarship students?

- Where did it come from? - The maid brought it, found in the mailbox.

It's for my sister.

Tarık...

- It's that bastard's job. - That's exactly him.

He's trying to drive Hümeyra nuts.

- He's not satisfied with all the things he's done. - Why would he be, why?

That bastard can't stand still where he's at.

What's all these things about, Kerem? What's he trying to achieve?

Mom, please try to keep calm.

We've survived the biggest crisis.

He can't make us afraid with these empty threats, alright?

What is this?

I don't know, I didn't check it after seeing the photo.

What does it say, Kerem?

I better keep these.

I asked what it says, Kerem.

"You'll give me what I want..."

"...or you'll lose your loved ones, one by one."

Things People Can Actually Hear?! - Duration: 11:21.

[pen writing]

[Pokemon game sound]

Hello. So, I want to end Deaf Awareness Month,

with a bit of a fun video, another fun video.

And really just one of the questions that I've had in mind,

and that is, how the hell do you hearing people hear things?

OK. That might be a little bit of a bizarre question because,

I still have enough hearing to be able to hear some things,

like I can still hear myself talking.

Despite lots of people thinking that I don't.

And you know there are things I heard a couple of months ago

that I can't hear so well now.

But you know what, there are some things that,

I really don't remember hearing like ever.

So, we're gonna go over a list that I have.

Now, Mhairi actually did a video similar to this so I'm gonna

link that probably on a card, so you can go see her list as well.

We might have some similar things,

but I did try to think of a few things differently,

and also the things that we may have in common,

try to talk about it from my own experience.

And of course, I know that there are things

that I just I can't remember.

I mean like, I thought about it and then I want to go write it down,

but then I forgot to write it down.

Thus, I don't remember what they are and that's so frustrating,

because I know I had a couple of good ones

and my boyfriend also made some suggestions,

because I would talk to him and be like, what? But alas, here we are.

OK. So let's get started.

I wrote them down in my Hobonichi weeks,

the ones I remembered to write down.

So, one thing that has always been mind boggling to me,

is when people can hear other people from across the room,

across the room, across the house.

Like people can be in this room with the door closed,

and they'll still be able to hear the person like in the other room

with that door closed as well.

I truly don't understand, it's not even like they're just,

well, sometimes they're yelling at each other,

but sometimes it seems like they can just talk in a normal volume.

Not that I know what that is anymore.

I thought that I had a grasp on normal volume but apparently I don't.

And what I think is a whisper is now apparently shouting.

So, OK. How?

How can you hear people,

and have a casual conversation, with your door shut, their door shut,

from the opposite sides of the house?

I don't, I, I don't I don't understand your sorcery.

I don't think I've ever understood the sorcery.

I do not remember ever being able to have a conversation with anyone

that is that far away.

And sometimes it's not even like facing in their direction,

it's just they'll be completely behind you

and it's supposed to be even tougher,

and I'm just like, really?

I mean, I think there are still some circumstances,

when someone might be like at the other side of the room

and I might be able to hear some sort of noise,

but I have no idea what it is. It's like once.

It's like one word and everything else is just quiet. I don't get it.

I don't get it. You all are,

you all have bat hearing. OK. I don't get it.

This is the thing that inspired me to make this video.

And that is laptop keyboards.

This is all because, Andrea, my friend Andrea made a tweet,

about how she had to move to a different room,

with her laptop to not wake up her roommates,

because she had to work and they had to work whatever,

but she had to work right there and then.

So, she moved to a different house

or to a different part of the house with her keyboard,

so they couldn't hear the keyboard.

She had to move to a room with her laptop,

so they couldn't hear the keyboard that's what I'm saying.

How? Now, mechanical keyboards I understand.

I understand. I can, well actually I don't know if it's

that I can hear the mechanical keyboard, like actually hear it.

Or if it's just the vibrations making me think that I can.

I don't know.

I know, (LAUGHS)

when I first got this,

I think I could hear it and now I'm like,

I don't know if I can hear it anymore. I think it's just memory.

I think it's the memory of being able to hear and all the vibrations

are playing with my brain, I don't know.

So, that I can understand because it has some,

something to it.

I wanna say it has some bite to it. But whatever, I don't know.

Now, also this might sound silly, it'll sound silly.

I'm like how do things make noises? I know things make noises.

I'm a very good science person, like I understand that

when you hit something it makes a noise because you hit it.

But though, it's just a mind boggling thing to me.

It's like one of the things that you can't explain,

you know things make noises.

Every single one of these things I know that they make noises.

But just moving on, birds.

More specifically, you know when the hearing folks are complaining

about birds on a Saturday morning and they're trying to sleep,

and the birds are outside of the wall,

like probably feet away.

I imagine my trees right now are about,

the length of ten people

that are on average 6 feet.

5'5 to 6 feet. I'm just guessing here

And somehow,

people can hear birds tweeting and waking them up,

I know when I did that hearing aid video,

that I could hear the birds but that's directly into my ear.

I don't understand how people can hear birds.

I think the only birds I ever remember hearing,

are like crows.

Like I would be outside and there'll be a crow,

and I could hear that.

But regular, everyday birds.

You know what I mean.

I just, I don't remember ever hearing them,

and I don't understand how anybody can.

The stove/microwave timers.

I don't remember ever hearing them ever.

I remember when I was

at my ex's apartment a couple years ago in Toronto,

and I accidentally had the timer

going forever.

I completely forgot about it. I don't think I was cooking,

I think I was just doing something,

and I couldn't hear it.

Until he picks it up and he's like, hello!

And I'm like, what?

And he put the timer directly to my ear,

and I couldn't hear a damn thing.

It's apparently shrieking and I can't hear it.

Granted it's a high pitch timer and I've always said that,

I don't do high pitches at all, I can't hear them.

The only high pitch I can still maybe hear,

sometimes on a good day is a church bell,

from this one specific church. That's all.

That's all I could really hear, sometimes on a good day.

But I could not hear that kitchen timer,

right at my ear.

And recently,

I was snapping my boyfriend and I had the TV on,

at almost highest volume,

and I was near my TV,

and I accidentally had the stove

timer going off. I was eating my food,

so my stove was off, just the timer was on.

And he was like,

you got your microwave

or your stove on?

And I'm like,

how? My TV is so loud.

It's at the point where I can barely hear it.

It was at almost highest volume,

and I could barely hear the TV.

But you can hear,

the timer

in the kitchen that's farther away.

He's like, it's loud.

I'm like, ooh!

Another thing

that involves microwaves and kitchens, popcorn.

So, one day I really, really want to do a skit about popcorn,

deaf people and popcorn.

And it never happened.

I did one about the mail man.

You know, when deaf people are waiting for the mail man but,

and I had the popcorn one in my mind,

but I just couldn't think of how I really wanted

to do the skit, and filming it was hard.

You know how all the directions is like listen,

so, you know when the popcorn is done,

and I'm like, yeah I know it's in the Deaf handbook

to burn your popcorn. It is.

You know you're deaf when your popcorn burns. That's it.

And I don't mean tiny, tiny burns, I mean it's

like a mine in your popcorn bag.

I've gotten away with the regular sized bags,

but I have a

100 calories snack size thing,

and I put it in

for the directions that said about a minute, a minute and a half.

I put it in for a minute,

because I always like to do my...

I always like to make the timer be like 30 seconds less at first,

because yeah,

I think it's smart for me to do that,

and it still burned so badly,

because I can't hear when it's done.

How do you, how do you know?

What sound does it?

I'm guessing the kernels stop popping,

Is that what it is?

The kernels stop popping, but like I don't know. I don't know.

I still wanna do that skit one day,

but I just, I don't. I don't know how to do that.

I don't know what to make the skit look like.

This one kind of goes with the very first one but footsteps,

like people can hear when people are walking.

Like for example,

if I'm at a hotel or like if I'm in somebody's apartment,

people can hear people in the hall,

walking.

Like when I was at Buffer Festival once upon a time

or when I was at Playlist, like last year.

I was also this year but I was sick the whole time, so I was stuck in bed.

But people are like, man,

I can't sleep because these people outside of my,

my door, you know just in the hallway in general,

and you know they're complaining on Twitter and they're like,

these people are just walking back and forth,

and I'm like how the hell did you hear that?

It's so peaceful in this room. I can't relate.

Except for that one time,

when it turns out it was my friend's group of friends.

They were ringing my doorbell and I had the accessible room.

I had the deaf room,

So, my room's flashing. I'm like, what the hell is going on?

Because I wasn't expecting anyone, I was not expecting anybody.

If you don't text me that you're coming over,

I'm not going to the door. So that freaked me out a little bit.

It was also 3:00 in the morning, I was sleeping.

So, anyway those are just a few things that I had on my list.

I know I had more. I feel like there's one that I'm thinking of,

that was really, really good and I just,

I can't remember what it was, I'm so sad about it.

if I can remember. I'm gonna try to write it down,

and then include it,

in like a comment or in the info box somewhere.

So, to you, fellow deaf or hard of hearing person.

Let me know of something that is just mind boggling to you.

Something that you just don't understand

how hearing people can hear it. (LAUGHS)

I'm amazed. I'm truly amazed because I just,

I realized the only thing that I can really hear,

at a normal volume,

by normal volume I mean, that's loud enough for me to hear.

My version normal, my new normal is like myself,

because it's, and the train outside my gym.

But other than that,

I don't know.

Again, I know everything pretty much

makes a sound.

So, it's kind of like well, yeah.

Why? Of course, people can hear those things if they have hearing,

but still, it's like, it's, it's just, it's just,

it's just an experience for us who can't hear these things very well.

Anyway, I thought that was a fun little video we can just laugh about,

(indistinct)

Again, if you've got something that is just mind boggling to you,

please leave it down in the comments.

Okay, get down!

This time, at Decay Dream...

As soon as we say too much, everyone would know where the location is.

Holy shit, look at this!

In the room next us is also many shi...

...nice stuff.

Together with Marcel K Photography

We visit an old chemical factory.

As you can see, the gasmask filters are unused so far.

We were rarely so impressed by a place.

Because of the huge, you get a sense of how many employees this place had.

Uncountable details.

Between natural decay

And wanton destruction.

You do not even know where to look. There is too much to explore.

SWITZERLAND: the CRYPTOCURRENCY capital? - VisualPolitik EN - Duration: 13:14.

Imagine that you could buy stocks from your uncle's farm.

Yes, let's assume that your uncle has a farm, a small farm, with some cows, and you

can buy stocks from his company.

On the stock market, just like you would do with big companies like Apple, Exxon or Chevron.

Do you think I'm crazy?

Not at all!

At the end of this video, you will see where I'm coming from.

Imagine that you wanna start a company.

A traditional company.

Let's stick to the example of the cows farm to produce milk and Dairy products.

What is the first thing you need?

Of course, money!

You need money to buy the property, the facilities and the cows.

Where can you get that funding?

The first option would be, of course, the bank.

But this has many issues.

The first one is that, if it was not risky enough to start your own company, having a

loan makes it even more risky.

You can end up bankrupt and with debts.

Besides, the person in the bank might not want to give you that loan.

If you have ever tried to get a loan to start a company, you know what I'm talking about!

It is pretty hard to convince a banker to lend you money.

So we discard the bank option.

The next alternative is a venture capitalist.

You know, one of those guys in Silicon Valley.

People with lots of cash and willingness to invest in young talents like you.

Who knows!

Maybe your small farm might become the nigh industry behemoth!

But…

OK, do you know any of those venture capitalist?

Chances are you don't.

Specially if you live somewhere in the middle of India.

OK, so no Banks, no venture capitalists…

Are your parents Rich?

No?

OK, so your parents cannot help you either…

Hum… wait a minute!

I think I have an idea… what if you could enter the stock market?

Yes, you know, something like Wall Street, where General Motors or McDonalds are…

The good thing about the stock market is that you don't need to know a millionaire to

get funds.

There are thousands of small investors out there who buy stocks every day.

So let's say that you divide your company in, say, 10,000 stocks.

Each of them have an initial price of 10 bucks.

And people, no matter where do they live, can buy those.

Maybe there is a guy in Kansas who buys one stock.

And there is a woman in France who buys 10.

This way, with no contacts and no bankers, you can get the funding you need.

You just need a good idea and hard work, right?

Well, don't get too excited.

There is a big problema.

For instance, if you want to get in the New York stock exchange, your company should have

already made, at least, 10 million dollars in the last 3 years.

And this is just the beginning.

There are lots and lots of regulations that you should meet.

Well…

THIS is the situation where the guys from the Khokholskaya Agricultural Company were.

They lived in Russia, they wanted to start a cow farm and they had no money…

What do you think they did?

Well… check this out!

Russian-based Khokholskaya Agricultural Company plans to launch an ICO named MilkCoin to fund

a dairy farm.

Yes, you heard this right!

This farmers launched their own cryptocurrency!

This is something like their own version of Bitcoin.

They advertised it on their own website and they launched the offer of this new coins.

This is what we call an Initial Coin Offering or ICO.

And now you might wonder… but…

Why should I buy ANOTHER cryptocurrency?

Isn't it enough with bitCoin?

Well… you might think you are just buying coins.

But in fact, you are buying stocks.

Without going through the tradicional stock markets.

At the end of this video, I will tell you what happened finally with this company.

But the truth is… they are not the only example…

Only 48% of ICOs were successful last year — but startups still managed to raise $5.6

billion

Yes, my dear viewers, there is already a brand new way of making Money to start a company.

And it is available for everybody.

But wait a minute because not everything is so beautiful!

As you can imagine, this idea of the ICOs seems like a scammer's paradise.

So the question is… can we really trust this brand new way of starting companies?

And what does Switzerland have to do with all of this?

Today we are going to answer all of this questions but, before we do, let's take a look back

at the history.

COINS VS TOKENS

In the year 2013, all the tech industry was already pretty aware of BITCOIN.

In Silicon Valley they were celebrating all kinds of events and talks about the future

of this currency.

In one of them, there was a man called J.R. WILLET.

This man had a very funny idea.

He said we could create other alternative currencies that, using the same tech as Bitcoin,

would have different rules.

And how are we supposed to pay to the IT people who would design all of that?

They asked him.

He said that, instead of looking for a venture capitalist, he could sell some notes, what

we call a TOKEN, that would be exchange for the coins once they are created.

And this is how the first Initial Coin Offering was created.

But before we continue, we must make a parenthesis.

Many of you might wonder…

What is a TOKEN?

Well…

Tokens are any kind of element that can be changed in a blockchain.

Cryptocurrencies are one kind of token.

But there are many more.

On one hand, we have those that give a right to its owner.

For instance, this would be the example of those notes that you could change by brand

new currencies once they are created.

On the other hand, we have the tokens that are based on an asset.

This would be the case of the stocks from the Russian farmers.

Having one of their tokens equals to have a share of their company.

This Initial Public Offering of Tokens became in fashion in the year 2014.

Why?

What happened in 2014?

Well that was the year when the second most famous cryptocurrency was created.

Ethereum: the decentralised platform that might displace today's institutions

Unlike Bitcoin, we all know who is behind Ethereum.

This is a company that offers way more than a cryptocurrency.

They also offer a system so other people can create their own cryptocurrencies and tokens.

For example, do you remember this other video where I told you how a Spanish bank is using

blockchain to give corporate loans?

So well…

Ethereum is the platform they use.

And we are not talking only about Spanish banks!

Ethereum has made it really easy to lots of people to start creating different financial

products on blockchain.

The Ethereum rush has been unleashed: ICOs are on fashion in the tech investment world

Since then, lots of companies are getting finance this way.

For example, SIRINLABS is a Swiss company that is about to launch their own smartphone.

This company has gotten more than 118 million bucks thanks to one of the most successful

ICOs of history.

And, of course, there are all kinds of Internet companies that have been born with this system.

But hold on just a second because not everything is so beautiful!

ICOs have no regulation whatsoever.

So you can imagine the rest.

How to create an ICO Scam in 5 simple steps

So now you might wonder… what is the difference between and ICO and, for example, a website

like Kickstarter?

Easy!

If you support some Kickstarter project, you cannot sell any share.

On an ICO, you can buy a token or a coin and, if it goes higher on the market value, sell

it to another investor.

The only problem is that here, there is no financial police or SEC that running against

the bag guys.

So imagine how many people thought they would get rich in a matter of months and they lost

tons of money, instead.

For example, SAVEDROID was a German company who wanted to make a cryptocurrency based

credit card.

It had all the buzzwords to make speculators happy.

Everything seemed beautiful, technological and disruptive.

Specially disruptive.

They got 50 million dollars to launch it.

And once they got them…

what do you think it happened?

Well, they just disappeared.

And since there was not public register whatsoever, it is almost impossible to find the owner.

I'm sure all of you have already seen lots of ads about tokens, coins and lots of things

that promise a lot of profit.

For a better understanding, even the CEO of Ethereum, VITALIK BUTERIN, recognized that

most of the ICOs are scams.

As you can imagine, governments have already started to act.

China has banned ICOs.

America seems to follow a similar way.

Other countries like Estonia said that it's OK to invest in ICOs for everyone except by

EStonian citizens.

This is something like…

'Oh, yeah man, you can scam whoever you want but not my people!'.

Nonetheless there is ONE country that has found an intermediate solution.

They will not ban it but they will not let it go as it is today.

Which country am I talking about?

Here is a clue!

We talked about it in one of the most viewed videos here at VisualPolitik.

Do you already know it?

Of course, we are talking about…

SWITZERLAND, THE CRYPTO NATION

Do you remember that video we made about Switzerland?

There we talked about a canton called ZUG, which has the lowest taxes in the country.

So… guess where Ethereum has its headquarters!

Having the biggest crypto currency company in your country means that you also have the

biggest experts on the matter.

So most the of ICOs are done in Swiss servers.

And, of course, the Swiss Government soon realized that, with or without scams, this

was a millionaire industry.

Switzerland Wants to Be the World Capital of Cryptocurrency

Four of the 10 biggest initial coin offerings last year were in Switzerland, more than any

other country

This is why, some Swiss municipalities let their citizens pay taxes or even fines with

cryptocurrencies.

Zug, having less than 30,000 inhabitants, is already the home for 400 blockchain based

companies.

And their regional government is already doing trials to use this technology to organize

the referendums.

You already know that referendums and direct democracy are essential in the Swiss political

system.

So well… now they wanna do them with blockchain.

And, of course, Switzerland wants to become the pioneer in ICO regulations too.

Swiss Financial Authority Releases ICO-Specific Regulatory Guidelines

For example, any company who wants to make an ICO in Switzerland, will have to do it

with a Swiss company.

This means they will have to register, give their name and have a physical address.

This way, it will be easier to chase terrorist, narcos or scammers.

As you can imagine, this regulations are starting to work.

And many companies have already gone to other tax havens like CAIMAN islands, that offer

a complete dog-eat-dog scenario where you can do whatever you want.

This is the short term price you have to pay in order to have a stable environment.

We are talking about a world that still needs a lot to become a mature market.

But it has plenty of possibilities.

Many more than scams, money laundering or easy money.

So the Swiss way seems to be the smartest so far.

Yes, a new technology has come: it is risky but it has many possibilities too.

Instead of banning it or, let it completely free, the best is to regulate it.

This way we take the good and avoid the bad part.

By the way, going back to our Russian friends… those who wanted to finance their farm with

cryptocurrency… well…

I have bad news for you.

Unfortunately, since MilkCoin raised only 2% of the Softcap, we are giving back all

funds that we received.

We will start the return on the 21st of November.

Huge thanks to our backers!

Now the question is…

Do you think other countries will follow the Swiss example?

It is clear that we still need more time for the ICO market to grow and become mature but…

Do you think it can be that capitalist revolution that will open the entry barriers to start

a company?

AN INSANE CHALLENGE WITH THE BEST ELECTRIC SKATEBOARD - Duration: 8:31.

What an insane session !

Here we are, at home with

the LOUboard

The Louboard is an electric skateboard

there are 3 versions, this one is the third

this board is the best one ever because

it is compact

it is light

it is extremely fast

and easy to use

but let's open the box and check this out

don't need the box

inside we got a small box like this

and inside

Instructions

the charger

an airbubble

tools for the axles

and the remote

it's light and small, easy to use

it's only a forward and backward button

and now let's have a look at the board

it is quick heavy but for an electric skateboard

it is really light

I had the opportunity to test other boards during some shop visits

and I have to admit that this one is quite light compared to the other ones

as you can see, the design is really clean, no apparent cables

the board is made of carbon fiber

both engines are in the back wheels

here's the little plug for the charger

which is waterproof as you can see

under the griptape you got the battery and the whole system

and it is waterproof as well. You can skate that thing in the rain, there's no risk

I have watched a few reviews of that product on youtube

and it really made me want to test this product

but enough talking, let's charge it and test it straight away

Milo, fetch !

we're in the middle of the fields

because as it is my first time trying this thing, I don't want to be in the city hitting a car

so here I am with Milo and we'll try here

and let's see how that thing reacts

I'll try first on SPEED 1

there are 2 modes

the first one is blocked at 15km/h

and the second goes up to 35 km/h

it is really fast, especially on a skate so I'm going to be careful

I'm curious to test the brakes as well

when you use them, it reloads the battery a little bit

but what's gonna be interesting for me to see is how good they brake

I haven't stepped on the skate for a long time

I have to give it a little push first

and here we g...

damnit

I give you a little taste of the sport mode !

good bye !

Let's go, watch out Milo

the acceleration is quite smooth

let's try the brakes now

Oh sh*t !

Now sport mode !

let's unleash the beast

Holy SH*T

Guys I got an idea

We'll try to go up the hill next to my place

I heard about a secret dirt track

I said "we" because I'm not alone ! Look !

We're about to skate 8km back and forth

it's going to be a perfect test for the battery

8km should be fine as it's supposed to have enough power for 15 miles

See you on the hill

I could let Milo loose

there is no car here

but the battery is almost dead...

but for its defense, it was extremely steep and for a long time

and I could still manage to skate uphill with the bagback, the dog, the dirt scoot

we have to go until the tree line over there then we gotta walk the rest of the way

As you can see it's not concrete so we got to walk from here

and as the skate weights a few kilograms

I'm going to hide it somewhere and we'll pick it up later

as we gotta walk a bit, let me tell you a story

this story is about a blond girl

I don't know why it's always about blonds, I know a lot of smart blonds

So this is the story of a blond woman

who comes back from food shopping to her car in the parking lot

and realizes that someone hit one of the doors of her car while she was shopping

she starts panicking

"Oh no ! My new car ! How am I going to fix this ?"

at this moment, behind her, a guy is walking

he stops and says

"Do you know what you can do to fix the door ?"

The blond answers : "No please tell me"

The man answers : "You just need to blow in the exhaust pot to inflate the door"

"Really ?" asks the blond

The guy : "Yes Yes try it ! You'll see

"it's gonna inflate by itself"

so the blond starts blowing into the exhaust pot

first slowly then stronger and stronger

when suddenly, behind her, another blond woman walks by and stops

and asks : "What the hell are you doing"

"Don't you see I'm trying to inflate my car door ?"

the new woman then answers : "You are so stupid ! It can't work !"

The blond : "Really ? Why ?"

The woman answers : " YOU LEFT THE WINDOW OPEN !"

We're finally on the tracks, let's put the helmet on and let's go !

Finally reached the end !

Milo, let's do it again ?

Massive shout out to the guy that followed me for 2 hours

you killed it man

the battery of the camera just died

but I got the solution, let's put the bagback in the sun

now let's wait

thanks NineJune

We are finally back home, this is the end of this video

but don't worry there will be another video next week

and it's going to be a special one because this weekend I am invited to the Royaume du Web (Web Kingdom)

the biggest french and swiss youtubers will be there

so if you are around, meet me over there

I also got a little surprise for you regarding the Louboard

You can use my promocode to get a 10% discount for your Louboard, everything is in the description

and like everytime, comment with the #dirt if you want more dirt scoot videos

or #unboxing if you want more unboxing videos

Let's talk about the extruder of our 3D printer - Duration: 14:25.

Hello again Infonaut, welcome or welcome to a new installment of your YouTube channel

Infoductive ... this time we are going to talk a little about the extruder

of our 3D printer since

I will explain how to propose the placement of the pieces

so that we have Teflon

or the inverted PTFE or the throat in reverse, this gives us certain advantages but forces us to a certain type of behavior ...

interesting, right?

We begin ...

let's review a little theory ...

let's see...

in a previous video we already did the maintenance

and we learned to dismantle

already reassemble correctly making a change

Teflon or PTFE because it is really PTFE is not Teflon ...

PTFE is Polytetrafluoroethylene

and basically the idea was to introduce it through the biggest part of the throat ... introduce

our Teflon or PTFE tube, although I'll call it from now Teflon ...

we counted it and the part that was countersunk narrower is the one that was in contact through the block

Heater

with the mouthpiece or the nozzle ... okay?

but this has a catch

basically the problem is that if our printer

works at certain speeds this will cause it to accumulate

plastic in the nozzle and push the teflon a little bit upwards, this can lead to jams of a certain type

in the mouthpiece and at the beginning of the throat

to avoid this there is a different way to place

precisely that PTFE tube

then I will explain how to put it as a ride again and then we will see what are the advantages offered

this system and

how should we act from the moment we have it this way ...

logically we started

with

our extruder disassembled either for maintenance or for other reasons ... this is the heating block

as we already know this is the throat ...

as you see already has introduced

the Teflon and this time I cut it to ras ...

agree?

make sure that it is well cut and that nothing protrudes ... well introduced ... and this is the mouthpiece, as you see this mouthpiece

in particular this nozzle has a much longer thread in such a way that it will stand out

more than what stood out in the previous video in which I did maintenance and how you see the throat has

a countersunk part ... in principle this is the one that should be in contact with the mouthpiece

but we are going to change this and we are going to make the part that is in contact with the mouthpiece

Is this precisely ... okay?

so that we will find a great advantage when it comes to making impressions with greater pressure

or with greater speed

all right?

I repeat, we do this once we have disassembled to keep our extruder

Of course this will condition us and will force us to a certain behavior that I will explain at the end of the video ...

as you see Teflon

or the PTFE better said is correctly cut

all right?

we take the heater block

and what we are going to do is precisely that part to screw it in, how do you see here we have a screw so that that screw will leave the part

lower and I'm going to screw the throat directly

from this part

through which we have inserted Teflon directly

in the heater block

remember to screw it up to approximately

half of the heating block or until it does not let you insert it more by hand ...

agree? ... it is not necessary to use any key because we already said

that what is going to block it is going to be directly the mouthpiece

all right...

we already have a lot of work done

next what we are going to do is to take the mouthpiece by hand

and screw it into the heating block, as you see ...

on the same side where the screw is in my case

we take the nozzle

how do you see the countersunk part of the throat is the top

which is next to the engine

we started to tighten all this by hand and once we can not screw it over

what we are going to do is help us through a glass or a key

of the corresponding metric

to our mouthpiece ...

I'm going to press

here we have it

I'm going to use

my key to tighten

a glass of this metric ... this metric in particular is 7mm is nozzle

still have to enter

a few millimeters inside

He heater ... inside the heater block

and this in principle is going to make it impossible for pressure to make the teflon go up

let's say this is the advantage that it will offer us

assemble it in this way now well, this later we will see what is the indispensable condition to work with this type

of assembly ...

then I'm going to press it ... do not be gross or brute ... do not squeeze it with a lot of force

just press it until you notice that it is not possible to hold the motor block ...

sorry ... hold

the heater block

by hand ... it's ...

I'm going to press it like that ... as you see, I would have it completely assembled

you see that it has entered enough, has entered practically all the thread of the mouthpiece

and having squeezed has blocked me

directly the lower part of the throat that remembers that it is not the countersunk part since the

part countersunk is now at the top

so that by a lot of plastic pressure that there

it will never make you revoke it up

Our PTFE tube

this will allow us to accelerate

in a certain way if you have a good configuration and a good calibration

the impressions of our 3D printer

and at the same time it's going to take a long time for us to have maintenance

yes ... we should never forget

that this will force us

to a certain behavior when using

our printer ... how do you see the countersink is on top

so that it is impossible for the Teflon tube

be spit towards the part

upper throat ...

Well, how do you see it is not a difficult assembly ... if you do not know how to disassemble it, take a look at the previous video in which I explain this, remember that these

videos are in the playlist related

with the 3D printer

and well we have already done a lot of the work then let's see

what are the advantages that it offers us ...

as is logical with the traditional assembly

if we use too much pressure

or speed or even we have been printing for many hours and the whole system is very hot

what may happen is that directly revoke

up our Teflon, our PTFE better said

logically this when riding it as we just saw

it gives us the advantage of being able to raise that speed, that pressure etc. without worrying about going out

so this is going to result

in extending much more maintenance due to causes of jam in the mouthpiece

or nozzle ... okay?

logically you also have to remember

that this, as I said from the beginning, forces us to a specific behavior ... what is this

specific behavior? basically, if we work with ABS

we shall never

preheat our ABS work

like ABS and my printer in particular

when I tell him that preheat ABS preheats me at 240ºC ... this is at a

temperature that could affect the tube that we have inside the throat

and cause that particles of that plastic are detached and cause jam in the mouthpiece

on the tip of the nozzle or the tip of the nozzle

So, in what way should we treat, for example, ABS? because the PLA would work the same as always

but in the case of ABS what we have to do is 1

preheat as PLA and when you get to that temperature order him to print with what values

are going to go to the temperature that we are interested

agree? It's not difficult ... then I'll explain

in my case what are those temperatures ...

suppose I get to my printer ...

if I give it to preheat

in PLA basically I take the bed to 60ºC and I preheated

the extruder at 190ºC, right?

if I say preheat

to

ABS or preheat for ABS

what it does is take the warm bed to me at 97ºC or 98ºC

and the extruder uploads it to 240ºC

this can be changed in the electronics, we will treat it in some video, but without touching anything my printer comes like this, so that

this violates the tube inside ... what would happen if we now

we make this change of placement

of the PTFE tube? basically we would have to act in the following way: we preheat like

I said PLA this takes me to 190 ° C the extruder

and at 60ºC the bed

and when selecting a file ... when printed ...

to be printed better said

really what it does

is to change those values

for 190ºC ask me 220ºC in the extruder

and in the warm bed it goes from 60ºC to 97ºC or 98ºC, depending on the case, but basically what happens is that the

temperature up to that point ... as this is way below

to degrade the tube we are not at risk

that our extruder gets stuck every second and we extend our

maintenance and of course we can accelerate quite

the printing of our 3D parts

with our 3D printer

I hope this information has been helpful for you I guarantee that it works

so I have it right now

I have thrown many kilometers of filament using traditional methods and

I guarantee that the amount of maintenance due to traffic jams, without having changed anything else

is much lower ... in fact I have not yet had to perform

maintenance with this placement ... the truth is that I have not yet reached a kilometer with her

but in more than 25 kilometers of finamento I had to perform at least

6 maintenance to solve jams

Sea Kayaking in Gaspésie, Québec | Paddle Tales - Duration: 13:24.

Ken Whiting: My name's Ken Whiting.

I'm a world champion white water paddler, and I've led trips and taught kayaking around

the world.

As an athlete and explorer, my lifelong passion has been to challenge myself, meet interesting

new people, discover beautiful places and share these experiences with others.

This is the story of these adventures.

This is Paddle Tales.

Ken Whiting: Hey, everyone.

I'm Ken Whiting and this is the first episode of Paddle Tales.

In this series, we're gonna be going to some of the most amazing places in the world.

Now, we're gonna be going on cool paddling adventures while we're there.

Because, for me, paddling is one of the best ways to meet cool people and to see a place

from a unique perspective.

Now, before we get started please subscribe to Paddle TV so you get notified when new

episodes are uploaded.

Ken Whiting: We're gonna kickstart the series by exploring Canada's largest province.

Québec is one of my favorite places in the world, and not just because they have amazing

bakeries and they invented poutine.

What I love about Québec is how big and rugged the landscape is, which means there's endless

opportunities for outdoor adventure.

The French culture is also very unique to North America, and the people are extremely

friendly and filled with 'joie de vivre' or a love of life.

Ken Whiting: To kick things off, we're flying to the eastern edge of Québec to a place where

the mountains and rivers meet the sea, forming a unique and exceptional setting for travelers

to explore.

In this episode of Paddle Tales we're visiting Gaspésie.

Ken Whiting: The Gaspésie region is the cradle of Canada where the first European explorers

landed on Canadian shores more than 300 years ago.

Located in East Central Québec, a massive peninsula is surrounded by the waters of the

Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the Saint Lawrence River.

My trip begins in the charming village of Percé.

Now, having just sat down with my triple-triple, extra sweet, no-foam latte, I'm already falling

in love with this place.

Ken Whiting: Percé bustles with summer activity.

The village features boutique shops, ice cream parlors, restaurants and pubs, including a

wicked micro brewery, and a newly installed boardwalk which is particularly nice for those

that just can't leave Mitsy back at home.

Those searching for adventure don't need to look far either, as the mountains and ocean

that surround Percé provide lots of opportunities for play.

Ken Whiting: Although I am excited to hit the water and explore the coast by kayak,

one of my favorite things to do in a new place is get a bird's eye view of the area, so that

I have a better understanding of what I'm seeing from water level.

And so, I've met up with Renaud Camirand from the Percé Géoparc, which recently received

the prestigious designation as the first UNESCO Global Geopark in Québec.

Renaud explains what this means to ... That it's a unified geographical area where sites

and landscapes are managed with the wholistic concept of protection, education and sustainable

development.

Now, that's enough to make your head spin.

Bottom line, it's a cool place with awesome rocks that you need to check out.

Ken Whiting: Before long, we approach our ultimate destination, one that isn't for the

faint of heart: a vertigo-inducing glass platform that's suspended more than 200 meters above

the ground.

Ken Whiting: Oh, cool.

Renaud: Nice, kind scary.

Ken Whiting: Really? You scared?

Renaud: Haha, no.

Ken Whiting: But I'll tell you what, those brave enough to conquer their fear of heights

are richly rewarded with a dramatic view of the village of Percé, and of course the icon

of the region, Percé Rock.

Ken Whiting: Wow, what a view.

Renaud: Yeah, it's pretty nice.

The Géoparc, it's community project.

It started first in 2012.

And here, on this suspended glass platform, was finished building in 2017, last year.

And in 2018, this year in April, we add the Global Geopark UNESCO label.

So, yeah. It's pretty nice.

Ken Whiting: What's so cool, for me, is how many different looks you can get at this area.

We're getting this incredible bird's eye view, but the village itself gives an incredible

view of the rock and the surrounding countryside.

But, apparently, one of the best views of the rock is by kayak.

Renaud: Yes, it was my first job in Percé, sea kayaking guide.

So, you'll see, it's pretty nice.

Ken Whiting: Awesome.

I'm looking forward to getting out there.

Renaud: Yeah.

Ken Whiting: I'm excited to see this monumental rock up close, so I quickly assembled my TRAK

kayak and meet up with Jeffery Bond of Avolo Plein Air, who knows the waters around Percé

as well as anyone.

Jeffery Bond: My name is Bond, Jeffery Bond, and I'm a sea kayak instructor.

I'm a sea kayaking guide, and also a whitewater and lake water canoe instructor.

Ken Whiting: Okay, so what is our plan for this afternoon?

Jeffery Bond: So, our plan is going to the nicest place in the world.

Ken Whiting: I like the sounds of that.

Jeffery Bond: It's Perce Rock.

They have, really, lots of wildlife around and the scenery's really beautiful.

So it's a big, big rock with big cliffs, 100 meters high.

Ken Whiting: Wow.

Jeffery Bond: And 400 meters long with a big hole in the middle.

It's really a neat rock because a lot of history and the formation is always moving.

Rocks are falling, so-

Ken Whiting: And a lot of birds.

Jeffery Bond: Lots and lots of birds.

Ken Whiting: Paddling Percé Rock is a special experience that I would highly recommend to

anyone who plans on visiting Gaspésie.

Not only is it a fun adventure that provides an unrivaled look at one of the coolest natural

phenomena you'll ever see, but it really solidifies the importance of Canada's National Parks.

Not only because they protect the natural beauty of these places, but also because they

provide a safe home for the plants and animals that reside here.

When one is confronted by such an unbelievably imposing geological feature, it's easy to

lose sight of the fact that Percé Rock is also a refuge for a gannet colony and hosts

more than 120,000 of these birds from April to October each year, making it one

of the most important gannet habitats in the world.

Ken Whiting: I have the best job in the world.

I get to paddle in places like this.

Ken Whiting: Knowing that I've only touched the surface of what there is to see and experience

around Percé, it's hard to leave so soon.

But I'm excited to move further down the coast and meet up with Kamille from Cime Aventures

who has offered to show me down the pristine Bonaventure River.

Ken Whiting: Cool, so, the Bonaventure River.

Kamille Brideau: Exactly.

Ken Whiting: Tell me a bit about the section.

Kamille Brideau: So, today we're gonna do the first portion of what we call the Famous

Store, to be able to see the beautiful rapids.

Nothing too big, just really fun.

And mostly, also, flat water.

So, it's gonna be just a mix of the two, just fun enough for our paddle board.

Ken Whiting: Looks pretty much as clear and clean as water gets.

So, I'm looking forward to this.

Kamille Brideau: Yes, I'm looking forward too.

Ken Whiting: Shall we hit it?

Kamille Brideau: Yeah.

Ken Whiting: All right.

This is definitely Cime Aventure's primary-

Kamille Brideau: Activities.

Ken Whiting: Activities.

Kamille Brideau: Definitely.

So, basically Cime Adventure is a resort.

Our primary activity is the river, you know, river for a day.

We have the Famous tour, which we are doing today, and we have also a shorter run, which

is called a family trip.

On top of that, Cime Adventure also has shelter.

We have little camp chalet in the trees.

Kamille Brideau: Oh, are you okay?

Kamille Brideau: And we have Teepees.

We have camping, camp sites.

We have yurts.

So, yeah.

And also, we have snorkeling.

We have paddleboard.

We have SUP yoga, yoga on a paddleboard.

Ken Whiting: Oh, cool.

Kamille Brideau: Yeah.

Ken Whiting: I think the coolest thing about standup paddling is the high vantage point

you get.

Kamille Brideau: Yeah.

Ken Whiting: And it's so different from kayaking and canoeing, being able to look down on things.

Kamille Brideau: Yeah, the gravity center is much higher.

I mean, it's totally different.

You see the river.

You have a better view of the river.

It's amazing.

We're very fortunate, especially with this beautiful river.

Ken Whiting: Yeah, this is something else.

I mean, it is crystal clear water.

Kamille Brideau: Yeah, it's got this green, blue, turquoise, it's just fabulous.

As soon as you step on ... Me, I step on my paddleboard, and I'm just like, "Ah."

I'm completely relaxed.

It feels good.

Ken Whiting: Although I love the ocean, there's something about paddling downriver that has

always captured my imagination.

For one thing, even though countless people might have passed this way before you, every

bend in the river feels like a new discovery.

You just never know what you'll find on the other side.

Ken Whiting: What do we got up here.

Kamille Brideau: So, we ... It's called a Cheval Blanc.

So, it's basically rapids level two, nothing too intense, just fun.

It's basically waves.

There's no rocks or anything to hit but ... And if you fall on the water, there's no big deal.

There's just fun.

The water is amazing.

Ken Whiting: All right.

Kamille Brideau: Yeah.

Ken Whiting: Well, after you.

Kamille Brideau: Oh, right.

I'll go first.

Ken Whiting: As a lifelong whitewater paddler, I've challenged my skills and nerve in countless

class five rapids.

But one of the things that I really appreciate about the Bonaventure River is that it features

gorgeous and friendly class one and class two rapids that most beginner paddlers can

enjoy.

I can say this with complete sincerity, because if my six-foot-three butt can weeble-wobble

its way down the rapids on a standup paddleboard, then anyone can get down via canoe or kayak.

Ken Whiting: Well, that was far from graceful.

I felt like a newborn giraffe taking its first steps.

Ken Whiting: The Bonaventure was definitely the highlight of the Gaspésie experience for

me, and when you consider we only paddled a mere four mile length of the river, that's

saying a lot.

Ken Whiting: For another 60 miles this river snakes smoothly over it's pebbled bed with a watery grace

that is nothing short of magical.

The glassy clarity of the water makes your imagination run wild above the other sights,

sounds and wonders one might experience along the Bonaventure's entire length.

I look forward to returning here one day and exploring this wonderful river from end to end.

Ken Whiting: Well, that does it.

That brings the first episode of Paddle Tales to an end.

Thanks for watching, and I'm hoping we were able to show you that Gaspésie really is a

remarkable combination of mountains, rivers and ocean.

It's definitely one of the coolest places that you'll ever visit.

Ken Whiting: Before you go, please give this video a thumbs up.

Subscribe to Paddle TV, if you haven't already, so you get notified about the next episode

of Paddle Tales.

And last but not least, stay tuned for a quick sneak peek at next week's Paddle Tales adventure.

Ken Whiting: Next time on Paddle Tales, we'll be visiting Abitibi-Témiscamingue, a region

of Québec that features thousands of beautiful lakes connected by winding and, at times,

thundering rivers.

We'll hike the trails of Canada's newest national park, paddle around magnificent island landscapes

and challenge ourselves in the epic whitewater of the Kipawa River.

Abitibi-Témiscamingue region is truly a vast playground for the outdoor adventurer to explore.

You won't wanna miss it.

Yazidis: Three Religions in One - Duration: 8:38.

I consider myself someone who's learned a lot about the middle-east and world religions

over the years, so when I heard about the brutal oppression of the Yazidis, I had several

questions.

First of all, who were these Yazidis?

The idea of a non-Abrahamic religion with roots all the way back to ancient Mesopotamia

was, to say the least intriguing, I had to find out more.

The first I heard of them was when the UN declared ISIS was committing genocide against

this religion due to their belief the Yazidis worshipped the Devil.

I knew there was a story here of a people who had experienced so much pain and suffering

because of ignorance.

Quickly, I found out about peacock angels, fire worship, and strict bans on marrying

outside of the faith.

I could already sense this was a syncretic religion.

We talked about syncretism before on Step Back, long long ago when I spoke about Voodoo.

It's when religions develop as a mix of various traditions.

Now, every religion is to some extent syncretic, but the Yazidis did seem like a unique combination.

TO THE INTERNET!

Yazidis are under the umbrella of an ethnic group in the middle-east called the Kurdish

people.

There's some debate on this, but they live in the region of Kurdistan which straddles

Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey, and they speak a form of the Kurdish language.

However, their genetic lineage seems to connect this group all the way back to ancient Mesopotamia,

seriously old fertile crescent stuff.

The name Yazidi comes from the old Umayyad Caliph Yazid I.

The Umayyads were a powerful line of rulers at the beginning of the Islamic empire.

One of the significant figures in Yazidi history traces his origins to this house.

The Yazidi religion is a blended mix of all sorts of Abrahamic and non-Abrahamic faiths.

That being said, they're distinctly not an Abrahamic religion, or at least, they haven't

been treated as such by their neighbours.

There's a lot of Islamic influence in their language, especially their more esoteric thinking,

which seems to borrow heavily from Sufi thought, a movement of Islamic mysticism.

However, that is where the similarities end.

Their myths about the foundations of the universe seem to have more links with the religious

beliefs of ancient Mesopotamia and Iran as well as Zoroastrianism.

They seem to have borrowed the Zoroastrian reverence for fire, but if you are lost as

to what Zoroastrianism is about you're in luck.

I made a video exploring them which you can watch here.

So really, it's a locally focused religion endemic to a specific group of people.

You can't convert, you must be born into it.

That group of people have then absorbed religious ideas and traditions from the various religions

which moved through the region of Northern Iraq they originate from since… well as

long as people have been farming.

The roots of this region are preposterously old, perhaps one of the oldest on earth.

It's a hierarchical religion, led both by a secular prince or Emir, and a religious

Sheikh authority.

They also follow a strict caste system.

Yazidis are not only strictly forbidden from marrying outside of their religion but even

their caste under penalty of death.

This comes from the Yazidi obsession with purity.

They have internalised a bit of Zoroastrianism about the elements of fire, water, air and

earth, and have strong taboos about mixing elements.

Actions like spitting on the ground or into a fire are considered very off limits.

They have also considered even association with non-Yazidis a form of pollution, so until

relatively recently, they didn't join the military.

It comes from a part of their creation myth in which they believe the world is populated

by descendants of Adam and Eve, but that the Yazidis were made of only the… reproductive

fluids of Adam.

Also, because of an outdated conception about the use of human waste as fertiliser, they

can't eat lettuce.

This is all a fascinating find, but it sounds as if these are a people who more or less

keep to themselves.

It doesn't explain why they have experienced such targeted hatred over the years, and especially

from the Islamic State.

Then, I began to look into their beliefs and found out what was going on.

Like Christians, Muslims, and even Zoroastrians, the Yazidis are monotheists, believing in

a distant God, who had delegated the tasks of goding up to a pantheon of seven angels.

The most prominent amongst these angels is… uh, this name.

He also goes by the cool nickname of the peacock angel.

It comes from an ancient belief that peacock meat doesn't decompose.

Tawûsê Melek in the mythology of the Yazidis at a point defied the creator god but later

attained redemption.

He's not a source of evil to them and is even one of the holiest of holy figures in

their faith, but one of the other names they've used for him is Shaytan, which is the name

in the Qur'an for the devil.

It's because of this similar name the Yazidis have spent centuries accused as being devil

worshippers.

That's right, because of a similar name, these people have experienced by their own

accounts 73 genocides.

Damn, that's fucked up!

The Yazidis experienced multiple attempts to persecute and force convert them.

They used to have a prominent place in Syria, until the Ottoman empire led several campaigns

to try and force the Yazidis to convert to Islam, driving them into Northern Iraq where

the vast majority of them live today.

And every so often, some sort of event would flare up and cause violent mobs to attack

Yazidi communities.

Such as in 2007 when a Yazidi honour killing sparked violence.

The Muslim public suspected that the Yazidis killed this girl because of their conversion

to Islam.

This sparked a series of suicide bombings against the Yazidi communities in Mosul, killing

about 500.

There are only about 700,000 Yazidis in the world.

But that doesn't come close to the untold horrors inflicted upon them by ISIS.

Under their occupation, thousands of Yazidis have either died or been forced into sex slavery,

to the point the UN has declared it a genocide.

Many thousands even today, after ISIS has been defeated in the region, are internally

displaced, or living all over the world as refugees.

And they have been the targets of Islamophobic hatred anywhere they go in the west.

Because, Islam isn't a race, but Islamophobia sure seems racist.

This is doubly compounded by the fact that because of these long-standing misunderstandings,

often Yazidi refugees need to be given special protection, and because of their cloistered

culture, much more resources and training once they arrive.

It's been a humanitarian disaster, and only when some of the worst people in history tried

to eliminate them from the earth did ignorant old me ever find out about them.

Just thinking about the deep roots of the Yazidi people makes me really appreciate the

gravity of what the chain of dominos set off by the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 led to.

Here are people who have ties all the way back to the time of Ur, Nineveh, and Babylon,

disappearing from the earth, and finding themselves without help.

The Yazidis are also part of the larger issue of the greater injustice done to the Kurdish

people.

They've been persecuted, displaced, and torn apart because of a bunch of old men in

1919 who drew this part of the map.

We really need to find a way to build a space for the Kurdish people.

The misunderstanding about the Peacock Angel shows ignorance can be deadly.

Curiosity and education have real impacts on how we get along.

You sometimes hear when people go off to get an education they come back all lefty and

stuff.

Maybe it's because reading about other people, and trying to understand those different from

you changes you in a way.

I'd argue for the better, and to make my case I'd point to the tragedy of the Yazidis.

Anytime we're all convinced a group of people are evil, think of them, and as the Green

brothers would say, see people complexly.
