Waching daily Sep 27 2018

how to stop taking things personally when others say something offensive to

us we cannot completely agree with what people say all the time and today I'm

going to give you the exact reason why we start thinking this way why we take

things personally and how to break out of this dysfunctional pattern to develop

a healthy thing in pattern and function like a champion in all areas of your

life you get offended easily you take things to heart you do all of this

primarily because you have been brought up in a culture of honor your self-worth

is determined not by yourself but what the other people say who stand

around you that's important to consider because when we look at this how we feel

when other people tell us something that offends us we have two options we either

react or we respond when we react we take things personally we get into a

situation where hey this person has offended me now it's up to me to defend

my honor to react to the situation by somehow fighting by throwing words

cussing at this person by throwing punches looking to kill that person

that's how you react where the emotional experience has taken over how you think

and feel and how you behave in this situation and it causes more problems

because the emotional arousal stays for a longer period of time this is why you

get angry and frustrated when someone offends you they have damaged your honor

this concept has been explained once again making a special appearance in

this channel is the book outliers by Malcolm Gladwell which talks about the

important concept of coming from a culture of Honor

there are two families in the south of the u.s. in the 1800s they have a family

feud going on and how does this Family Feud start off one family member

accidentally shoots another family member of the other family now this

family member says hey this person has soiled my honor now it's up to me to

react now I want to pay him back for what pain he has caused me now this may

be emotional pain it's maybe physical pain this may be something that has

damaged the person the self worth how does that person see himself I attach my

value to that honor this is how I have been raised that I need to defend myself

by fighting back so what is this person do goes and kills another couple of

family members here and it starts off a chain reaction this person goes and

kills another family member here another three died here five died eight died 29

until the entire valley is a chaos the entire valley is completely destroyed

all the people are dead and for what one accidental shooting where this person

damaged the honor of his family and now I need to pay that person back do you

see how being raised in a culture of Honor can change how you react when

someone offends you when someone says something against you or friends you

throws a cuss how do you take it do you stand for it do you react to it do you

respond to it that's where the key lies because when you react in a situation

like this it causes problems it's not so much the fact that that person has

offended you it's the belief that I should not stand for something

when someone offends me I shouldn't stand for it that's where it's coming

from you've been taught how to do it you've

been taught to come from a place of honor

you cannot soil my honor and get away with it you take it personally because

you have been taught to do it you are supposed to believe that by reacting in

this fashion by taking it personally or by either fighting back cussing at that

person I am somehow defending my honor think about that someone who is let's

say an Indian that person see someone who has not stood up for the national

anthem what is the perception here the perception isn't that you have offended

me by not standing up it's not that that person has offended me by not standing

up for the national anthem and singing it's the belief that I am an Indian I am

an Indian and this person is disrespecting what it means to be Indian

there it is that's where the problem lies that's why I take it personally

because my belief system allows me to think in that fashion that somehow if

this person doesn't stand up if this person stands up somehow they are

fulfilling what I have been taught to believe while going up do you see where

it comes from here reacting I can either scream at that person hey

stand up stand up and show respect for the national anthem

the self-respect the self-worth of being an Indian that is justified by forcing

this person to stand up and follow a certain belief system that I choose to

believe now it's that person's choice whether they want to actually stand up

and pay respect to the national anthem but I choose to force my beliefs upon

that person by getting irked Cheers another way of looking at it

I can also respond now Here I am emotionally emotionally earth I am

emotionally responding within seconds of that person not showing me respect

seconds within that person not standing up for the national anthem in showing

the country the due respect that it deserves here on the other hand you

think from a rational point of view hey maybe that person isn't from this

country hey this person may be sick hey this person may actually not want to

stand up maybe the person respects the country in different ways

maybe the person has different values maybe the person doesn't want to stand

up for his or her personal reasons maybe the person is physically disabled

there may be n number of reasons why the person chooses to react the way they do

but here we have an opportunity to respond how do we do that

if someone offends us take it through this year pull it out through the other

how strongly do you attach your value to the words that other people say and how

strongly do you attach value to what you think of yourself

your belief system and how do you defend yourself when someone dis magis Your

Honor your value how do you react that's the critical factor because if you

choose to Rea react in a way that is causing problems

we know that through the ventilation fallacy I've already made a video on

this on how we choose to react when we get angry we choose to react a certain

way because we believe that is the right thing to do it will make us feel better

but the emotional arousal the anger the frustration that we experience it

carries over it spreads to other situation and just like how it happened

with that family feud it gets transferred to other people's anger and

hate is very strong and we can easily teach other people how to it so if

that's the belief system that you are coming from think about how you should

respond in that situation is the way that I am reacting healthy for me is

taking things personally making me feel any better

why did that person say what they did what does it mean

does it actually afflict my self-worth does it actually really matter to me as

much as I am placing importance on it right now think about it like that all

of these questions can actually make you understand this problem from a much

clearer perspective because when you respond in this manner by asking

questions you choose to not take things personally as much you try to understand

it from the other person's perspective and you also can do this you remember

that most of the people make such comments these are the people whom we

will likely never meet again they are beyond our inner circle the two groups

of people our family our friends the people whom we hang around with the most

these are our inner circle our lifelong companions now outside of this inner

circle the people who might do not give priority are the people who typically

make these comments the people who can offend us and that can emotionally hurt

us because they have damaged our self-worth what do you do you choose to

ignore it walk away from the situation if you can or walk up to the person

confront them don't throw words at them don't say something that you may regret

or may damage that person's self-worth instead just tell them that hey you are

crossing a certain boundary here I value myself highly I choose not to stand for

this statement that you made make it specific so that you tell the other

person that hey I am NOT going to stand for this particular thing that you do

defend the statement don't defend the person defend the statement don't defend

the person because when we generalize that's when problems get created respond

in such a manner where you pinpoint the exact situation where that person

offended you in some way and tell that person how you would like

them to behave and if they still do not behave in a different way

you still somehow take things personally walk away from the situation walk away

there is no heart there are only two options there either stand and defend

yourself definitely not reacting to the situation

but responding in a way that allows us to function in a healthy way anger

doesn't really help anger when controlled becomes a much healthier

emotion versus when it is totally out of control anger and aggression can

dominate our thinking process and can easily get transferred to how we think

and feel as well as how other people think think and feel when they are

around us so keep that in mind if you want to take things personally remember

what it is doing to you it's not good it's not healthy there are a multitude

of other ways that you can go about dealing with the process if you allow

yourself to choose what you want give yourself a choice remember that you have

an option of responding not reacting when you respond you allow yourself to

come from a rational school of thinking where you ask yourself questions you

come to a realization that hey I don't have to think this way there are much

better ways for me to think about myself it's not an easy process but it's a

habit you choose to develop ask yourself questions regularly and come to unknown

and understanding that hey I don't have to do this to myself there

is always a better way of reacting to the situation I am going to give myself

that choice that's what I want for myself and that is what I am going to do

if the strategy works out for you comment down below and tell me exactly

what you did and how it brought you out of this situation how did it make you

react in different circumstances and how are you going to go about using these

strategies I want to know comment down below if you found this video useful

GrandPrix Low-Ceiling Two-Post Lift Testimonial - Duration: 2:35.

My name is Dmitry Dovidenko, I'm a technology professional and I'm an aspiring YouTuber.

You can catch me on my YouTube channel Dmitry's Garage.

I think every car guy can relate to having to work on jack stands, in parking lots or even

small garages and I had to do that for a really long time.

Eventually when I was house shopping, I realized I wanted to build my dream garage.

I never wanted to work in a parking lot or in a tiny garage on jack stands again and

I knew that a crucial element to my garage would be a two-post lift.

Good news for me came when I discovered that BendPak was releasing a new series of lifts

called the GrandPrix.

These lifts have much better clearing that are able to fit even into garages with shorter

ceilings like mine.

My ceiling is 9 foot tall and this lift was able to clear it perfectly.

I have an extensive scope of work I do in my garage.

From simple things like brake jobs or taking wheels on and off the car, I'm also dropping

transmissions, I'm dropping rear cradles.

We're going to eventually be doing some engine swaps.

Some work that I do is almost impossible to do on jacks and stands.

For example, installing long tube headers on a car like this mustang behind me is almost

impossible if your on your back with little clearance.

I also knew I could trust this lift because it is a BendPak lift.

I've used BendPaks at other people's shops before.

I've had my cars on numerous BendPaks at professional shops and I knew that this lift would be something

I could service for years to come and that it would be reliable, certified and safe for

my use at home.

I've had my GP-7 lift for 9 months now and it's definitely the showpiece of my garage.

I'm very proud of everything I've built here, including my cabinets, my workbench but the

GP-7 lift is definitely the primary thing people notice when they come in.

Obviously simple things are made much faster as well.

Two-post lifts are some of the most versatile that really allow for almost any job to be

done.

I've generally tried to do my own work in fact, the Mustang behind has only had one

other shop do work on it which was for an alignment cause I can't do that myself--yet.

I love having my lift.

I can't wait to see what BendPak and GrandPrix come out with next.

Thanks you guys for watching.

TRIATHLON TAREN Trainiac Mini Camp DAY 2: Swim coaching - Duration: 13:55.

- Morning, Trainiacs, it's day two

of the Trainiac Mini Camp, and I'm making 'em work.

We're talking swimming.

There's some good lessons we can learn here.

(upbeat electronic music)

This guy might not know it,

but he is gonna be one hell of a swimmer.

Look at this alignment.

He's bang on.

Back of your head, butt cheeks are out of the water,

heels are just out of the water.

Your arms are perfect down there.

Your kick is a little bit wide.

But here's something that I want you to look at.

Look at that.

That's straight, and you keep that pretty well.

So we'll go there.

A little bit curved.

- Yeah.

- I think you're just worried about, I gotta get air.

I gotta get to the air, I gotta get to the air.

And you know what, when you put a snorkel on,

that goes away completely, 100%, it goes away.

It's all about, you're worried about getting to the air.

The really good stuff, your head position in the water.

Really good, right there.

Just cutting through, like, that looks pro.

That looks really professional.

Look how far back you got that hand going.

- Yeah.

- You got that, this long, outstretch.

You got a really nice extension, you're way out there.

So you start it really well.

- Yeah.

- But I think you start sinking,

because people wanna push down, to get their head up.

- And head out.

- So you're trying to get your head up to get to the air.

I really think everything, like, look at that.

Holy smokes, man.

- Yeah, that is good.

- That's so good.

Everything comes from you wanting to get air.

Not being comfortable in the water.

And we look at how long you had to take at the end,

because you were out of breath.

20 seconds here.

- Is that me catching my breath?

- Yeah, you're catching your breath.

So it means that your breathing really hard,

you're hyperventilating.

We're at 30 seconds, when it was only about five,

when you had the snorkel and the fins.

That's perfect, you got really nice reach.

- Kinda winged that.

- Yeah, it's like you're firing your arm into the water.

It looks really good.

You would benefit from snorkel and band work.

But here, you see, you start off coming off the wall,

basically horizontal.

Your butt's nice, close to the surface of the water.

Take a few strokes, you start freaking out.

And watch how much lower your feet get.

They just slowly go lower, and lower, and lower,

- There they go.

and lower, to the point that they are.

And a lot of that is from people tensing up their body.

Oh, oh, oh, I don't like where this is going,

I don't like where this is going.

And I can see, when you're kicking on your back,

that that's what happens.

You get one splash in the face,

and you go a little bit lower.

And then you get another splash in your face,

and then you go a little bit lower,

instead of just trusting it and relaxing.

And the more you relax, the more you're just gonna float up.

Not a ton of bubbles.

Most of the bubbles are coming from

your head just going into the water.

And then there, boom, you see, not a lot of bubbles,

not a lot of bubbles, oh, I'm gonna take a breath.

(exhales sharply)

So you're holding your breath,

until you go and take a breath.

So you're never gonna be able to get rid of all that oxygen.

- Yeah.

- Yeah, so you're trying to go.

(exhales and inhales sharply)

Instead of.

(exhales and inhales slowly)

That's why that sink down drill is.

- Yeah, I actually feel like that's how you should breathe.

(upbeat electronic music)

Your body position here, Dave, is really, really good.

That head position is good.

Water line is halfway through your head.

You want head, butt cheeks, heels coming outta the water.

When you kick, the fin goes vertical.

So you're creating drag way, way better.

That little kick is about all you need, Dave.

I wanna start with the overhead.

Because that's the biggest issue for you.

Tower 26, Jerry Rodriguez,

taughtness, alignment, propulsion.

Taughtness and alignment, together, are you straight,

and staying within that channel, with your body?

Or are you wiggling around?

Are you wiggling out of it?

Is your body going in a banana shape that way?

Or a banana shape that way?

You wanna be a log, a kaiak in the water, not a pool noodle.

You can see, there, that, already, you got that.

And as we go, and you see certain areas here,

like right there, it's gonna create drag.

Because that, right there, is your frontal area.

That's your frontal area and it's going outside of that.

So it's creating drag, and you're not stiff.

You wanna be dead straight, all the way across.

The fix for that is simple.

I wouldn't even really do drills.

All I would do is follow the workouts,

and never miss a set that says snorkel band pull.

That stuff is going to be immense for you.

- Okay.

- The good news, like I say, is this is something

that's super, super common, with just about every triathlete

that starts swimming as an adult.

Because, all of a sudden, you get in the water,

where 92% of your body weight is displaced.

And you don't know how to be firm.

You don't have gravity working against you, to stay firm.

So, because you got no weight keeping you tight,

you've got nothing keeping you nice and solid, like that.

So this is totally normal.

This, here, phenomenal.

Going down, underneath the surface of the water,

about a foot and a half, having that nice line right there,

this is gonna be really, really hard for you to do.

It's hard for everyone.

But, in a perfect world, drawing a straight line,

from your shoulders to your fingertips,

we wanna have your elbow a little more like that.

- Yeah.

- That's tough, really tough.

I wouldn't worry about it too terribly much.

You're pretty close.

As long as that elbow isn't coming back here, and up,

you're pretty close, so, there's nothing there

that I would be really worried about.

That's good, your butt cheeks, here, the back of your head,

touching the surface of the water, good.

Your legs do sink a little bit.

Again, that's pretty normal.

So you can see that the butt cheeks are there.

And the legs are going down.

Again, snorkel band pull, focusing on having those heels

nice up close to the surface of the water.

But there's nothing really in that catch,

and that arm pull that I would be worried about.

You're finishing way back here, that's good.

That's something that I struggle with.

I finish up here, at my hip bone.

You're getting a nice big pull.

If anything, if you wanna fuss about it,

yeah, you can put that hand a little bit further down.

And how you work on that is by doing a drill

at the start of the swim, 25 drill, 25 swim.

And tuck that elbow in, and just go like this.

So you feel that tricep. - Tricep.

Cool.

- Yeah, and you're not even taking a stroke.

You're just pushing and feeling that tricep pop.

- Okay, awesome.

- The reason we're doing a max heart rate test,

and not an FTP test, is because yesterday

was a bit of a big day.

When you travel, you might not yet have the legs in you

to do an FTP test.

But you can always get your heart rate up.

You're at four and a half, right now.

And then we're gonna bring your heart rate up a little bit.

Just kinda open it up.

Then we're gonna let you settle in.

(upbeat electronic music)

Alright, pick it up for ten.

Three, two, one.

Settle in.

I wanna max effort here.

Good grief, Winnipeg, you did not want to agree

with the weather, this weekend.

Not ideal for a training camp.

Winnipeg is not showing its best foot, no, no, no.

How about that little pain session that we put together.

Who's jealous of Ben and Dave?

So what we did there today was,

they traveled, both, Thursday, it's Saturday right now.

Yesterday was a bit of a bear of a day to start with.

We went for that easy 70K ride,

that there was still some effort into it.

We went out on the track,

which tends to beat people up a little bit.

So we started off this morning with a recovery swim.

Going just for an hour but, like, long, smooth swimming.

Throw the fins on, which facilitates a fair bit of recovery.

It just kinda works out all those kinks.

And Dave and Ben were saying that, after the swim,

they felt good.

Whereas, in the morning, when they woke up,

they were like, oh, my god, I hate Taren, not a cool dude.

Did not enjoy that.

But, at the end of the swim, they were all good.

Then we came in here, took all that footage,

that we put together while we were swimming,

and we analyzed it.

Ben is gonna be one hell of a swimmer.

Dave is a typical triathlete, not aware of his body,

he's gotta develop that body awareness.

And he's gonna, because, just in the last six weeks,

he had a swim smooth lesson, six weeks ago,

that they worked on his breathing pattern.

I didn't see anything at all, but his breathing pattern.

The guy's a good athlete, he's gonna get good.

And then, just now, we put him through this suffer fest,

doing a max heart rate test.

Because I could go and punish everyone.

Every single workout, and just pound them into oblivion,

do the workouts with them, and make them keep up with me.

And send them home walking funny.

But that's not really gonna make you a better athlete,

for the next three months, the next three years.

What is gonna make you a better athlete,

is being able to go home and have things

that you can apply, that you learned here.

And you can only do that, this well,

when we're in person for four days straight.

I can punish you from a distance.

But here, going through this testing protocol,

and then we worked out the zones, their training zones,

and I explained how much training should be in zone one.

How much should be in zone two,

how much should be in zone four, and zone five,

how little should be in zone three, and then why.

I showed them all the workouts that we've done,

and why all of those workouts are designed the way they are.

And when it says zone one, zone two,

why it says zone one and zone two, why it says zone five.

Because all those workouts, it's all done for you.

Once you do the heart rate test, like they did,

now they know why they're doing what they're doing.

So there you go, Trainiacs, that is day two

of the Trainiac, Kickstarter, backer, little mini camp

that we've put together here.

Thank you to Dave, thank you to Ben for giving it their all

in that heart rate test.

Spider-Man Far From Home LEAKED Mysterio REVEALED IN SET PHOTOS! - Duration: 3:14.

what's good YouTube Warstu here with a video on spider-man far from home so

just like I said I will be keeping everyone up to date with everything

going on behind the scenes and in front of the camera for spider-man far from

home as best as I can so they've just finished wrapping it in Prague on

September 27th and now they're heading to Venice and then after that they're

gonna be heading to Berlin before heading back to America to shoot some

final scenes in New York and LA so that's all the film in locations they've

currently just got to Venice and there's a bunch of pictures around the internet

of all the cast Tom Holland etc exploring Venice for the first time it

looks like in my interpretation so guys if you're new to the channel make sure

to subscribe I have to open the discord page stroke server which I will leave

below and I've got a twitch page if you're interested if you do want to

enter my competition all you've got to do is tell me who is your worst here in

them to you and I will be picking the winner tomorrow so I actually missed

this image someone sent me on Instagram it's an image of the carnival scene you

know the carnival scene where someone gets scared the whole crowd scared

everyone scared they're scared at green light and interesting the images

appeared that could actually be our first look at Mysterio played by Jake

Gyllenhaal Jake Gyllenhaal has unofficially basically confirmed that he

will be playing the character now guys I'm in the thumb now and in this image

is gonna be a picture of a mysterious guy I'm not saying this is Mysterio but

it is revealed kind of but could this be Mysterio we all know there's gonna be a

crazy CGI to make him look absolutely crazy and make him look a lot bigger

than it is it's just if there are a carnival this guy who are presume is

working on the ferris wheel just look really sketchy

it's got to be linked to Mysterio could just be Mysterio and they're gonna

somehow CGI of special effects him to make them look a lot bigger now we know

this is real because the two other people in this image are partly main

stars of the actual movie obviously Jacob who's in the movie who plays Ned

are in the scenes so could this be Mysterio I'm not really sure but it does

actually look like material so what I go over some girls guys so you know the

leaked image apparently that we got of spider-man in Ace

they'll suit well after talking to a bunch of people it just turns out that

it's the homecoming suit with black cloth around it so whether that's the

case that it's black car that is a new function or a new kind of ability he's

unlocked on the suit but then another image appeared and he had goals on so it

just looks like they've built in stealth suit like stealth into the homecoming

suit I don't really think it's going to be the stealth suit because it would

have to be green I don't really think I was going on but really it's just an

update of what's going on with spider-man far from home let me know do

you think this image here is Mysterio or do you think they like the bold fish

head next to the original Emma image that I shared a couple days ago do you

think that's Mysterio so guys I'm gonna keep you up to date hopefully we do get

an official image of Mysterio soon but to me this could be Mysterio might not

be let me know guys like always I will catch you in that next video very soon

eh yeah later

Motivated to buy stuff | MINIMALISM - Duration: 9:23.

Hello and welcome back to my channel. So I have done a few videos about my shopping hack which

is where I talk about how I attempt to protect myself from the manipulation of

adverts and the way that I do that is, as soon as I begin to get an emotional

response from an advert, I think, first of all, what is the emotional response that

I am getting from this advert? And second of all, how is it doing it? I pick it apart

and I think - you know marketing is incredibly clever - what tricks are they

employing to make you feel the way this advert is making me feel. This means that

instead of the message just washing over me and me just believing whatever it is that

I'm told by I give myself a little bit of distance from younger and enough

space for me to think what do I actually think. Is this a trick?

Is this genuine? What's going on here? And that means that the message of the advert is

generally less effective. So the two questions I'll ask myself is what am I

feeling and how is it making me feel this and usually the way that adverts

do this is by drawing upon some sort of feeling of inadequacy so they'll

usually show beautiful, popular, rich people promoting their products because

they kind of go with the assumption that you might be feeling somewhat inadequate

in your beauty, popularity or richness just as a general human being. And then

they want you to draw some sort of association that if you buy that product

you will be beautiful, popular or rich sort of by default which

obviously isn't how it works - we're talking very subconscious, here, but that

is how marketing is so successful. People usually feel inadequate and if you can

draw upon that to sell your products, you're gonna do well. Now I feel like

I've slagged marketing off a lot but I have so much respect for it. I think it is a

genuine art form. I think in order to be good at marketing, you have to be so so

clever and you have to know so much about psychology and the way that the

human mind works and I think it's a fascinating topic but also, you know,

I don't like being told what to do so stop telling me what to do.

So the thing I want to talk about is a few days ago I was in

a shop and I got an emotional response from a product and this doesn't usually

happen so I asked myself the same questions what am I feeling why am I

feeling it. The product in question was a notebook. Now, I usually do have a bit of

a weakness for notebooks. I think a lot of people who want to be

organised or who associate notebooks with being organised have that same kind of...

There's just something exciting and magical about a new notebook that...

I don't know what it is but they're great. But these weren't any ordinary

notebooks; these were self-aware notebooks; these were notebooks that knew

how I felt about notebooks and were playing on it. They were taking advantage

of the fact that when I see a notebook I think a brand new start; I think I can

start my new project now that I have this notebook. All of those ridiculous and

incorrect thoughts I have regarding your books - and I'm very aware that they're

ridiculous and incorrect - this knew. This note book knew. So this one says, 'big

ideas have small beginnings' which is not untrue, you know, that's kind of how

growth works. So the problem that I have with this is that we are quite

used to companies cashing in on our insecurities about the way we look, about

our youth, about our status; this is very commonplace now but here

we have a product that is trying to cash in on our aspirations and are desire

to live a better life and I just don't like that. It took me so so long - it took

me so many years to understand that the reason that I really liked note books

and that I really like stationery is because I wanted to be someone who had

projects on the go. I wanted to be someone who was organised and I thought

that I could somehow bypass that. If I bought the products that I associated

being organised, it would somehow make me organised and that isn't how it

works and that is so true of so many things that I bought. I felt like I

could bypass the hard work by making a purchase but you cannot. There is no

substitute for hard work at all. Buying a planner does not make you more

organised and buying new trainers does not make you fitter but this is something

that we've been told again and again and again in adverts - that if we make that

purchase then we buy with it this whole new life but that's just not the case

and it takes learning that lesson to finally realise that it's all on you, you

know, you need to put the time in and there is no substitution for it and

also I'm not saying don't buy a new notebook - there's

nothing wrong with buying a new notebook if you need a new notebook but

don't be fooled into thinking that you're getting anything more then just

paper when you buy a notebook that's that's all it is.

This one says, 'your only limit is you' which is a rather reductive and unfair

thing to say but I'm assuming that they are intending for this to be

inspiring so we're just gonna remember that at the moment. Another problem I

have a companies cashing in on what is essentially just a dissatisfied

generation is that if the user does not use it as they intended to then that

product is just gonna sit there mocking them; mocking them with these

inspiring slogans. They're just gonna be sitting around the house gathering dust

and reminding them of that time where they thought that they were gonna

achieve something or, you know, start a new project. And you can feel free to

tell me that I'm reading too much into this but I know that I'm not. I know our

subconscious is so susceptible to any feelings of inadequacy - any feelings of

anxiety - any sort of shortcoming. We are so primed to be aware

of how we don't measure up as a society, I guess. And I and I'm someone

whose benefitted firsthand from getting rid of all of those things so I know the

difference that it can make. Things affect us subconsciously all the time - we

don't even have to have noticed it's there and and we will be affected by it.

This is an interesting one - this is a folder that says, ;it's a beautiful thing to

start' and it is. Every single day is. It's a very inspiring thought; it's very

inspiring folder but this is something that I've been learning so the good

feelings that we get from a rush of motivation and inspiration and that

feeling of like, "Oh, my god! I'm going to achieve this, I'm going to do

this and everything's gonna be great!" That intense burst is actually a

burst of dopamine and dopamine performs its tasks before we obtain rewards

meaning that it's real job is to encourage us to act either to achieve something good

or to avoid something bad that is something that I read in an article: a

scientific article so you know science and that. But essentially what it means

is that they are drugging us by offering us this small token of

motivation, we feel this dopamine purged and we get inspired to

take action and to do something about it and if drugging someone to buy something

isn't manipulation then I honestly don't know what is. So here we have

'live more worry less' let which is a fine concept but again it's kind of targeted

towards people who might be worried or essentially just vulnerable; maybe

someone's having we have a crap time. They see this notebook and they think, y'know what, yes.

I am gonna live more and worry less. They buy it, they're two pounds down,

they think that they're gonna change their lives and what you know the lives

are exactly the same because that's not how life works. It's not fair. It's taking

advantage. Then we've got 'just chill', we've got, 'live every moment', 'hashtag

positive vibes' . This is all the same issue. It's taking advantage of people

who want to improve their lives but haven't quite figured it out yet and who

think that maybe by spending this two-pound you know it's only two pound

on a book on some stationery that they are going to get closer to their goal.

If you need a new notebook that is completely fine I am NOT saying don't

buy new notebooks by you know maybe just get a plain notebook that won't have a

judgmental slogan on it. There is no shortcut to hard work. It takes time,

it takes perseverance and consistency; and if any advent of anyone or any

product tries to convince you otherwise then you are being lied to. This turned into a bit of

a rant and I apologise but I sound like I hate notebooks - I don't hate

notebooks - if anything I love notebooks - but I hate people being taken

advantage of and I really feel that this whole new branding thing is exactly that.

I think it's a trick. I think it fools people into thinking

that they've been given some sort of key to unlock their future with and it ends

up just being a notepad or and just being a pair of trainers or it ends up just being a dress.

You know, there's so many things that are so important to being a happy human

being that you cannot buy. But adverts work by trying to convince you that you

can't so please try and remember that if ever you find yourself getting an

emotional response from an advert or from a product just question it and pick

it apart. Try and work out what you're feeling,

why are you feeling that way. Ss it genuine? Sometimes we might get a genuine

feeling and that's totally fine. There's nothing wrong with

seeing something incredibly beautiful that you love and thinking, you know, I

think I would love to have this in my home. That's totally fine but it has to

be sort of an authentic genuine connection.

It can't be you being manipulated by whoever's created the product. I hope

that made sense anyway and I hope that was useful to someone and also I

hope you're well and please don't forget to subscribe if you're new because it

(upbeat music)

How ya doin' Your Honor?

Good morning, sir!

I'm so happy you're concerned about how I'm doing.

(laughs)

I could just see it all now.

Depending on how much money you have in your pocket.

Nothing.

Nothing?

You came to court today knowing you have a fine,

and you didn't take any money with you?

No, sir.

Oh.

You didn't go to the back and take money out

of your bank account?

No bank account.

You don't? Oh.

I put all my money up under the bed.

Who do you live with?

My girl.

Oh.

Did she give you some money this morning?

Naw, she wants money she takes money from me.

Does she work?

I pay her.

Oh, you're supporting her.

(laughs)

Oh, I see.

Well, coming from your residence

there was loud music.

Yes, sir.

I've been there 15 years, though,

no problem. All right, hold on,

hold on for a minute All right

Police could here the music from outside

and they issue issued you a two hundred dollar fine.

So what do you want to tell me about this?

Well I've been there fifteen years, no problem.

We got new neighbors that moved in and

they called the cops on me.

They coulda' knocked on the door

I woulda turned the music down.

Was it a radio or was it? It was a radio.

You have the amplifiers?

Yeah, yes sir.

You have amplifiers?

What time of day was it?

I think it was about elevon o'clock.

At night?

Yes sir.

Mr. Crawford I have a summons before me.

That indicates that on April twenty seventh that

there was hard music coming from your residence.

It does not state the time.

So the summons is incomplete.

My philosophy is that everyone should be entitled

to the full benefit of the law.

Whether or not their an experienced attorney or not.

So if you came here with an attorney today

an attorney would make a motion to dismiss,

because the summons is incomplete.

You don't know that because you're not a lawyer.

But there's no reason why you shouldn't have the benefit

of having the law enforced on your behalf.

But I know that and it would be immoral

if I fine you when a summons is incomplete.

So I'm gonna dismiss it.

Thank you Your Honor.

With a promise from you that keep the music down, right?

Okay.

What were you doing?

Were you dancing with your girlfriend?

What was going on?

Yeah, I had a little disco ball in my house and you know,

I just turned the music up.

I mean I didn't realize

Let me see your best move?

Let me see your best move?

Give him the great street slide.

There you go.

(clapping)

Thank you Your Honor.

I noticed you were a, were in some distress back there

so we are going to take you first.

Thank you.

Are you feeling alright?

No.

I'm scared.

Something we can help you with?

No it's about this warrant.

Oh, don't worry about this.

All right your. Just

Your charge of use of tobacco in the park

the city counsel just

had passed and ordinance

making smoking illegal in certain sections

of the downtown area,

and you were charged with violating that.

Correct.

And I am not going to lie I did have a cigarette

in my hand, but it was poked out.

And I think because I gave the officer,

ya know, I was rude to him.

I think that's why I got the ticket.

You can't get a ticket just for

having a cigarette in your hand.

Like there just gettin' ridiculous here.

Using it to search you and it's just going so far.

I didn't even know you can't have a cigarette

in your hand even if it's not lit.

I'm not going to lie, I'm homeless.

I'm having a hard time.

You have any children?

I just had a son remember,

I was pregnant last time I was here?

I don't remember that but

Yeah, I have he's three months old.

What's his name?

Isaac.

Isaac.

I think I told you name him Francesco, didn't I do that?

You did.

(laughs)

Didn't work out.

That's strike two in my book judge.

(laughs)

Well Isaac is a wonderful name.

Thank you.

I got it form the bible.

Isaac is three months?

He's three months old?

Yes, almost three months.

I know the last time you were before me

you were pregnant.

I know you had some issues you were dealing with

and I know I wish you well. Thank you.

I hoping you're coping pretty well with those issues.

Trying.

Hang in there we're rooting for you.

Thank you.

The fine for smoking

in the Burnside Park

under the ordinance is fifty dollars.

I think in your situation, I'm familiar

with your background.

You just had the baby, you've had some other issues.

I think the money would be better spent on Isaac.

Thank you so much.

So I'm gonna give you a break on this one.

Thank you very much Your Honor.

Good luck with the other situation

that's going on with you.

Thank you.

Good luck.

Have a good day Your Honor.

(upbeat music)

You were charged with going through a stop sign

on Copiner and Ninth Street.

Yes.

You do not have a good driving record,

you use your good driving record

before the traffic tribunal last year.

Is there anything you want to tell me about this?

I don't think it was right cause,

you know if I woulda see him, why,

like if I see him why would I keep goin'.

But, you know, I don' wanna keep goin' with this.

You don't want to come back and have a trial.

So you say listen I was coming down the street

I saw the police officer, right?

I saw him sitting there,

why would I go through the stop sign?

Is that your assertion, is that what you're saying?

Well yeah. He come to me can

He said to you why,

let me explain it to you.

He said to you didn't you see me.

Exactly. Right?

But why did he say that.

Because supposedly him, I didn't see him.

But if you stopped at the stop sign

and went through he wouldn't stop you.

So what he said to you was didn't you see me,

indicating that you went through the sign.

Didn't you see me there?

Why didn't you, his question is

why didn't you stop?

But I stopped.

When I noticed that he was behind me

No, All right, I understand.

You know I was like what did I do.

I understand.

You wanna come back and have a trial

or you pay eighty five dollars.

What do you wanna do?

Lets just pay it cause I'm not coming back for this.

All right it's eighty five dollars.

Pensando Novas Economias | MARES LIMPOS #9 - Duration: 13:05.

For almost 200 years, the way we produce and consume products is basically the same.

Regardless of what is produced, the first step is the extraction of raw materials from nature.

Later this raw material is taken to a factory where it will be transformed into the final product.

The products are then put for sale and after the purchase we, consumers, use these products.

Some of them are made to last for years, maybe even decades, but many have a shorter and shorter

programmed life. Even the most complex and expensive ones follow the same logic of programmed

obsolescence, that is, a very short usage time before we need to switch to a new one.

And that's basically the way linear economics works.

Extraction, transformation and then you already know, discard. But that has a limit.

There is not enough raw material on the planet for this model to continue to work for a long time.

In 2018, the planet hit the overshoot day on 1 August.

This means that after that date we started to borrow our natural resources savings.

The problem is that every year that day comes sooner.

And then we continue destroying, destroying, destroying what we can not afford.

In 2050, besides having more plastic than fish in the oceans, we will also have a population

of more than 10 billion people.

Does this bill checks if everyone wants to consume and produce the way we do today?

What if there were another way of production that would have the least impact on the environment on

the seas? What if there was another way of distributing the goods to those in need without us

having to produce more and more? What if this was already a reality?

EPISODE 9 THINKING NEW ECONOMIES

There are people who still think that when we talk about sustainability and environmental preservation, we are

going against progress, but that is not true. There are other ways of thinking about economics and

growth that take into account things that we know today, unlike those we knew

200 years ago. The big problem with capitalism today is that it does not take into account the environmental cost.

So it's as if we could pretend that nothing has happened to the planet and that it will continue

to provide all the resources necessary for every business in the world to grow double digits per year,

every year. But there are other ways of thinking about economics, production and growth

that more intelligent and profitable than this model we have today.

Rodrigo Sabatini: We have to change the economy. And this is something that is happening.

We have to dematerialize the economy. Why do we have to dematerialize?

Because we don't have more materials to produce.

This is actually happening with the shared economy, people no longer care about having.

In 20 years everything will be shared. This change is happening.

Of course, we have a problem that is the inequality of the planet.

If we turn the economy, to dematerialize the it, to make an economy based on service,

on the being and putting the materialization, the matter, to balance the world, I mean,

who have it, has it and doesn't need to have more and who doesn't have we will balance, I think we can

achieve this balance in a century or maybe a half-century.

Beatriz Luz: The circular economy brings both environmental and social benefits.

In the environment we see a scarcity of resources due to this rampant production and that brings

volatility and risk to the companies. And that is why we need to provoke a new economic model

that grows disconnected from the exploitation of these natural resources.

Through a model that preaches the reuse on remanufacturing and in this sense we will have great gains

in the generation of employment and education, where we'll need new skills and professional qualification.

We can't talk about an economic model like that while we keep treating and calling raw material as garbage.

We've already talked about the 8 billion reais that Brazil loses by burying raw material every year

in landfills. So, to talk about circular economy and shared economy, we have

to talk about zero waste. All these ideas are complementary and none of them are impossible.

You must've seen here the case of San Francisco and what they are doing to become a metropolis without trash.

Zero Waste is a goal. That means it is not a magical process, nothing is going to happen now,

you have to set a goal. An ethical goal, because it depends on our behavior, depends on

our responsibility to our society. It's an economic goal, because instead of spendings and

damages you will try to earn resources, decrease extraction, avoid foreign exchange, all of this.

It's an efficient goal because there is no process in our post-industrial world that has

a great deal of waste at the end of the line that is efficient.

So actually, we can define the Zero Waste in an engineering way as a total quality program

based on continuous improvement whose indicator is the generation of waste in the end.

And it is a visionary process, where you direct humanity, direct the citizen to a future, a better future for all.

Robert Reed: This was something that our grandparents did.

This was something that was much more common 50 years ago and then someone in the accounting department

at the large beverage company concluded "we can be more profitable in our corporation if

we can transfer the responsibility for that container onto society.

We don't have to have all these beverage washing plants and employ all these people washing

all these bottles and drive them and transport them back and forth.

We can put our beverages in a plastic bottle and then we're out of the loop".

That's a more linear kind of model, but it's very bad for society and it's an unnatural model.

In nature, we all know, we have circles.

So much better to refill the bottle and include everyone along the circle in the loop.

Nowadays, if a product cannot be recycled, reused or reduced, this product does not fit into 2018.

It should be reimagined, redesigned. It's no good anymore.

It's like an asbestos tile, it has to be redesigned, because society today no longer accepts it.

One important thing in this configuration is that the role of the State is not to collect or clean anyone's rubbish.

The role of the State is to design this process and provide the infrastructure, the necessary instruments

so that I, citizen, can exercise my citizenship.

The great challenge for production is the understanding that you cannot do it alone.

We need to establish a culture of collaboration.

Work along and also even out of the value chain, with our competitors, industry with government, with society.

It's a more balanced economy, which restores social and natural capital.

I live in Florianópolis. Florianópolis is a city of 500 thousand inhabitants that spends around 150 million

reais to clean and give destination to the garbage.

Just to give destination, to keep the trash out of the city, it's spent 30 million reais.

Okay, you know what is 30 million reais? It's 15 schools per year.

It's 30 health posts per year, kilometers of sanitation, kilometers of road.

So today, Brazil goes through a very serious problem, we are choosing to pay a maid

to clean up our crap instead of giving study to the children, instead of giving health to the children.

So we have people who are minimalists, who are seeking a simple life,

a life more in the being, in the experience, that's a movement.

We have a movement for dematerialization of the economy, which is another movement.

On a local base, there's one called Zero Territory, where you have zero emission, zero kilometers and zero waste.

We have the industry movement, which obviously the industry lives of production and so we have

the circular economy, which is actually a production efficiency program, but no one so far has talked about

stopping production, right?

But we have an example like that of Patagonia, which says "okay, I don't want to stop producing, but I'm going

to produce something that will last a lifetime". Durable goods. We have the technology that is there for us to

communicate, to exchange experiences and to be able to create an anarchic management system of the world.

I think we need to go through life with eyes wide open and ask ourselves, how can we live more

simply, how can we live more in harmony with nature? How can we model nature?

A tree in the spring comes to life and has many, many leaves in the summer and does all this photosynthesis and

post carbon back down into the soil and in the fall, the leaves fall off the tree and they fall to the ground and they decompose,

they compost around the base of the tree and that compost feeds the microbial colonies, it feeds the

little animals that are in the soil and it makes the soil more healthy and then the healthy soil can feed the

roots of the tree and the tree can have another year and another life and produce fruit and produce shade and attract

birds and just start to listen to the benefit on top of benefit and on top of benefit...

And stop the wind and create more photosynthesis, get more carbon back into the soil.

The same thing happens when we have composting in our community.

We're just modeling the simple natural process, but we're doing it in a bigger way.

Circular economy is modeling nature into the production process.

And since nature has no trash, everything is reintegrated into the cycle of birth, growth and death.

The circular economy is born thinking the process where the linear economy stopped: at post-consumption.

Nothing else can be designed to be thrown away, after all there is no away.

All products are now thought to be reintegrated into production at the end of its usable life.

Then the concept of trash ceases to exist and along with it, all the environmental problems it causes.

And that's it. Stop using the straw is just the tip of a thread that we're start pulling now.

A thread of a new way of thinking and acting in the world, that guarantees that there will be life in the next years

for us, human beings and for all the other beings that share this planet with us.

Mares Limpos is about that. The sea brings us oxygen, food, leisure, health.

The prognosis is still desperate, but you who accompany us here know that there is a lot

going on and that change starts with us. So the challenge of this week is about this:

Shared economy, it's a lot easier than you think, wanna see?

If you have clothes that you no longer wear, take them to a thrift store.

If you have a piece of furniture, give it to someone. That toy that your child doesn't play anymore,

that can be the great toy in the life of a child in a daycare.

We have to think that something that is broken and that we sometimes think as it's rubbish, for someone else

it may be one less consumption.

And two weeks from now, at the end of our web series, I'm going to present you the great heroes

of this change, people who have inspiring stories and who are pulling the movement around.

I wait for you, subscribe to the channel, share this video and join us, because together we'll make it happen!

Coruscant | Star Wars | Atlas - Duration: 6:41.

If there's a bright center to the universe, it is Coruscant.

Since the rise of the Old Republic it has captivated the galaxy with its glittering

skyscrapers, great avenues, and towering monuments.

While not the only planetary ecumenopolis in the galaxy, Coruscant is by far the most famous.

Thousands of years of constant development have stripped away the planet's seas and

mountains until almost no evidence remains of its former environment.

Instead, Coruscant's surface is defined by urban sprawl, collectively known as Galactic City.

Dense city blocks rise upwards from the planet's surface for thousands of levels.

Here, wealth increases with altitude.

The lowest levels are uninhabitable, riddled with strange creatures, devoid of light and

abandoned.

Above are the nearly lawless habitation blocks, home to billions of middle-class workers,

forced to endure toxic fumes and sporadic sunlight.

Only the rich and powerful can afford to live above the planet's artificial surface in

towering skyscrapers that rise for kilometers into the atmosphere.

These enormous structures are enough to affect global weather patterns, and Coruscant's

urban nature necessitates a planet wide artificial weather control system.

Galactic City is divided into sectors which are further divided into specialized zones

intended for financial, governmental, or industrial purposes.

The Federal District is one of the chief examples of this and during the time of the Galactic

Republic and Galactic Empire, was the center of political activity on the planet and the

galaxy.

It was the site of the Galactic and later Imperial Senate, the Galactic Courts of Justice,

and the Jedi Temple.

During the reign of the Empire the district was transformed and heavily fortified, eventually

hosting the headquarters for Naval Intelligence and the Commission for the Preservation of

the New Order.

Industrial districts included "The Works", once a manufacturing powerhouse known throughout

the galaxy, but eventually neglected and abandoned in favor of cheaper alternatives like Kuat

and Corellia.

Nevertheless, some of the galaxy's largest companies and financial institutions have

retained their corporate headquarters on the planet.

While celebrated for its cosmopolitan culture and its influence on the arts, education,

technology and finance, Coruscant was also home to a vast criminal underworld.

Beneath the pristine avenues and glittering lights of the city surface, the labyrinthine

network below conceals a dark and violent world almost indistinguishable from the most

infamous ports of Wild Space.

Despite the presence of the Coruscant Security Force and a network of cam droids and monitoring

technology, those looking for a place to hide or disappear need only catch a ride down one

of the huge ventilation shafts scattered across the planet's surface.

The true nature of Coruscant's origins have been lost to antiquity, but it is now widely

theorized that it was the original homeworld of the human species.

As they traveled, explored and colonized the rest of the galaxy, Coruscant became the center

of political and cultural life.

With the establishment of the Old Republic, Coruscant's importance increased, and it

outmaneuvered its early rivals to become the effective center of the galaxy.

The planet's strategic location at the nexus of several important trade routes and hyperspace

lanes cemented its status, and the planet was awarded the coordinates 0-0-0 on all standard

navigation charts.

Many born on backwater worlds across the galaxy dreamed of arriving on the planet to make

it big, only to be relegated to low-level work and subjected to a life of crime and violence.

After a millennium of peace, the outbreak of war between the Republic and the Confederacy

of Independent Systems transformed Coruscant into a hotbed of political intrigue and a

strategic target.

Both the Grand Army of the Republic and the Republic navy maintained a significant presence

on the planet, leading to civil unrest and even a bombing campaign by Separatist sympathisers.

While the majority of the Clone Wars had been fought far from Coruscant in the Outer Rim,

a direct attack on the capital in the final months of the war shocked the planet's citizens.

The memory of the attack helped galvanize support for the First Galactic Empire and

the newly installed Imperial Government enacted sweeping changes across the planet.

The cityscape was stripped of much of its elegance in favor of sleek lines and a more

utilitarian style.

The non-human population was forcibly relocated to the lower levels, resulting in widespread

riots and demonstrations that were brutally put down by Imperial security forces.

News and rumors surrounding the Alliance to Restore the Republic only inflamed the growing

anti-Imperial sentiment on Coruscant.

When word reached the capital of the destruction of Alderaan, vigils held across the city quickly

turned violent.

Four years later, when the Rebel Alliance destroyed the second Death Star and the Emperor

was killed, the citizens of Coruscant took to the streets, toppling Imperial monuments

and setting off chimes and fireworks.

Police and Stormtrooper forces opened fire on the crowds without warning and in the ensuing

months Coruscant dissolved into a true state of civil war.

Eventually, with the signing of the Galactic Concordance, Coruscant was ceded, alongside

the majority of Imperial holdings to the New Republic.

In an attempt to avoid the worst aspects of Imperial rule, Coruscant was stripped of its

political power and the title of galactic capital was instead granted to dozens of other

worlds on a rotating basis.

Yet the cultural, economic, strategic, and historical importance of the former capital

can not be underestimated.

With the collapse of the New Republic and the rise of the First Order, there remains

a great deal of truth in the old saying "whoever controls Coruscant, controls the Galaxy".

Why Do People Join Cults? - Duration: 4:47.

[ ♪OUTRO ]

When you hear the word cult, you might think of a dark chamber with a bunch of robed people

chanting because of weird, sinister beliefs.

Or tragedies like the over 900 people who committed mass suicide in 1978 because they were instructed to by Reverend Jim Jones.

It's easy to wonder who would ever join a cult, and assume there's something wrong with those people.

But cults come in many forms, and are more common than you might think.

And most of the time, the people who join are just like you and me.

Defining cults is tricky, even for researchers.

They pretty much agree that cults involve extreme devotion to some idea, thing, or person.

But some researchers emphasize a religious element, calling them a New Religious Movement.

Others focus on manipulative persuasion tactics.

And some highlight destructive groups that seek to control and isolate people,

as opposed to groups that might share some cult-like qualities but aren't harmful or could even be beneficial.

The reality is, it's sometimes hard to give a clear-cut answer as to whether a group is a cult.

But psychologists are still trying to figure out who joins cults and why.

Most studies involve recruiting former cult members from all over the world to ask them what their experiences were like.

It's hard to interview current cult members or people before they join.

So, while researchers have learned many things from these people who left, there's still a lot we don't know.

But what we do know is a bit surprising.

For instance, in one study from 2007 at the Autonomous University of Madrid, researchers

interviewed 101 former cult members and found that they're just normal people.

Some said that they joined cults because they were dissatisfied with their life, or were

looking for self-development or spiritual growth, which are totally normal psychological phenomena.

Everyone usually wants to belong to a group of people that cares about them,

and might look for answers to big picture questions, work to improve themselves, or seek spiritual enlightenment.

Sometimes, people just find those things in cults.

And, even though all this research is far from conclusive, there might be factors that put us more at risk of joining one.

Who you're around could matter.

For instance, if your family or friends are already part of a cult, your chance of joining is greater.

Same with having a dysfunctional family that's not very supportive or even abusive.

But family can also be a source of protection if you do join.

Having a supportive family that isn't judgmental and critical can help you leave.

Some personal qualities might also matter, like being more spiritual or religious,

or being curious about other people's views.

People who are having a difficult time in their life, dealing with stress, or having

problems managing emotions or daily life pressures, are also at a greater risk.

All this makes it sound like everyone is at risk, which… we kind of are.

But also in that 2007 study, the former cult members rated manipulation as the most important factor in joining.

People usually thought they were joining a normal, healthy community, because of various persuasion techniques and lies.

This manipulation is often a long, gradual process, taking months or years to change your attitudes so that you'll commit.

The leaders are typically very charismatic and confident.

They do things to make you like them and their group, which is called ingratiation.

Sometimes they'll give small gifts or do favors.

Thanks to reciprocity, it makes us want to give something back.

Then, to get you to stick around, they use techniques like fear, humiliation, or shutting down any dissent or questions.

And they often isolate you, restricting your independence, like if and where you work, and whom you're allowed to talk to.

When everyone around you seems to believe in the group's mission, and any voices that

say otherwise are quickly shut down, it's hard to question what's going on.

And if your old life is gone and you have no job, friends, or family to return to, it's a lot harder to leave.

But it is possible.

Once out, people often deal with many mental health problems because of the trauma and

abuse they might have experienced, developing things like PTSD and other issues.

The good news is that research is being done to understand how to better help people leave

cults, return to regular society, and live a healthy life.

A lot of therapeutic techniques are involved, from focusing on basic mental health to unpacking

why they joined a cult in the first place and unlearning any harmful beliefs the cult gave them.

And the other good news is that psychologists do know a thing or two about how to resist persuasion.

For instance, there's forewarning: If you know that someone's going to try to convince

you to do something or buy something, you tend to evaluate them and their message more

negatively, so you're less persuaded.

But, according to a 2009 study by a researcher at Opole University in Poland, this doesn't

work equally well on all kinds of messages.

Forewarning helps us resist persuasion more if the cult is focusing on your personal life.

Because when we think about ourselves and our personal values, we're more protective.

But if the persuasion is focused on bigger philosophical things, like why the answer

to life, the universe, and everything could be 42, the warning doesn't have as much impact.

So it's normal to want to belong, figure out who you are, and hang out with cool people.

But not every group has your best interests in mind… so just be careful.

And there are plenty of awesome communities out there, too.

Metals & Ceramics: Crash Course Engineering #19 - Duration: 10:03.

Materials matter.

You wouldn't want to make a stop sign out of candle wax or a bench out of chocolate.

Neither would be able to hold up to the weather outside, and things would get quite sticky rather fast.

So if you're going to create things and solve problems, you're going to need the right supplies.

The right materials.

And two of the three main types of materials you'll encounter as an engineer are metals and ceramics.

[Theme Music]

Engineering, like life, is about choices.

For example: some people decide to get braces to straighten their teeth.

But choosing to wear braces isn't as simple as a yes or a no: there are many different kinds to pick from.

Two of the most common are braces with traditional metal brackets, and ceramic ones.

There's not always an obviously correct choice: picking the right type of braces is all about weighing the pros and cons.

That's true whether you're the person wearing them or the engineer designing them.

So to make a good choice, you need to know more about each material.

As a budding engineer – and, like, a person in the world – you probably already have a decent idea of what metals are.

They're in our cars, our buildings, and many of the devices we use every day.

And you may have already worked with ceramics, or at least have had them in your home.

Pottery is usually the first example that comes to mind, but you can also find ceramics in many other things, like bricks, windows, and even electronics.

So metals and ceramics are definitely common.

But working with them isn't always easy. Or simple.

There's a lot that has to happen before you get your final product!

For example, imagine what it would actually take to make a set of brackets for braces.

Before making anything, you have to get the material that you're using, which often starts out as ore that we mine.

Ore is a type of naturally occurring rock that contains certain elements or minerals.

Once you get ore, you can extract the elements you want from it.

Then, through processes like casting or forging, you can make that material into a more-usable bulk form.

A common example is an ingot, which is usually a bar of a pure metal, like the bars of gold you see in old Westerns or in Skyrim.

You can then take those bulk materials and form them into stock shapes, like sheets, tubes, or even powders.

That's what you might find at your local hardware or home improvement store.

But then, to get your final product, you need to turn those stock shapes into a preliminary version of your braces.

Even once you have that, and make any necessary changes to the design, the braces still need to go through a cleaning process,

be checked by quality control, and then packaged up before they can be used or sold.

That's a lot of steps, and those are just the basic ones.

In real life, there are even more.

Not to mention the time and effort it took to pick the right materials, design the brackets, and make sure they fit well.

You wouldn't want to get all the way to the end and then find out they're just going to snap in half!

That's why it's so important to understand the properties of the materials you're using.

Most metals share a few common properties.

They tend to conduct heat and electricity well.

Many are malleable, or easy to shape without breaking, and ductile, or easy to stretch and deform.

Put another way, materials that are made from metals are relatively strong and stiff, but also resistant to fracture.

This makes them good for building structures!

Metals also typically reflect light well, which is what makes them shiny.

That might not be the best if you don't want your braces to be so noticeable.

It just depends on what's most important to you – brackets that are less noticeable, or ones that are less likely to break.

If you decide to use metal in a design, for braces or anything else, there are lots of different kinds to choose from.

In fact, about three quarters of all known chemical elements are metals.

Common metals that we find here on Earth are aluminum – or aluminium as we say back home! – iron, potassium, and magnesium.

But often, these metals aren't used by themselves – they're added to an alloy,

a metallic material composed of more than one element, with at least one of those elements being a metal.

Steel is a good example – it's an iron alloy.

It's primarily iron, but it also includes a bit of carbon mixed in.

Sometimes there are other elements like chromium or nickel thrown in there too, depending on the type of steel.

But why not just use the iron itself?

Why go through the trouble of making steel, or any alloy for that matter?

It's because alloys have different, and often better, properties than the individual elements they're made from.

For instance, steel tends to have better impact resistance than iron.

And it's far more resistant to rust and corrosion – especially stainless steel.

So you'd want to choose stainless steel over iron for projects where corrosion would be a problem,

like for the exhaust pipe in a car or a replacement joint like an artificial hip.

A big reason that metals and alloys are the way they are is because their chemical structure is more free-spirited.

The bonds within metals and metallic materials leave a large number of electrons that aren't bound to particular atoms and can move from one atom to another.

That's known as the free-electron theory of metals.

It's like these free electrons can move as a group though the metal itself.

This explains why some metallic materials are so good at conducting heat and electricity – especially simpler metals.

Their electrons can more easily carry that energy from one place in the metal to the other.

So, metals have a lot of positives.

But they definitely aren't right for everything, which is where something like ceramic might come in.

Ceramics are compounds that aren't completely metallic, but they don't have carbon atoms bonded in a way that would make them organic, either.

You can define glass materials the same way, so a lot of people include them in the same general category.

The main difference between glass and other ceramics is in their chemistry.

Ceramics are usually crystalline, which means their molecules are more ordered, whereas the molecules in various types of glass are more random.

But no matter how they're organized, the molecules in both ceramics and glasses are made up of at least one metallic element, plus at least one non-metallic element.

They often include oxygen, nitrogen, or carbon.

Common examples include aluminum oxide, better known as rust,

and silicon carbide, which can form a very hard material that's used to make everything from car brakes to bulletproof vests.

And, of course, there are the more traditional ceramics that most people think of, like cement, or compounds made up of of clay materials, like porcelain.

In general, ceramics are relatively stiff and strong and often very hard.

In this way, they're similar to metals.

But they're also extremely brittle and can fracture very easily.

Which doesn't sound too good if you're gonna have them on your teeth for a few years.

Ceramics are also usually insulators, so they don't conduct heat and electricity well – although there are some that do.

And they tend to be more resistant to extreme temperatures and harsh environments than metals and polymers are.

But while most ceramic materials have similar properties, there are differences.

We could spend hours going through all the different types of ceramics out there, but there are a few major ones.

Glass-ceramic materials, or materials whose chemistry falls between a glass and other ceramics, are relatively strong and don't melt easily when heated.

They also tend to be biologically compatible.

And they make good insulators, which is why they're commonly used in electronic packaging applications.

Plus, they can be completely transparent.

Perhaps one of the biggest appeals of glass-ceramic materials is how easily you can fabricate them.

You can use conventional glass-forming techniques, and you end up with a product that's nearly pore-free, which is great for handling liquids.

So glass-ceramics are really useful!

But sometimes you want something a little simpler. Like clay.

Clay is inexpensive and commonly found in nature.

You can often use it as-is after mining it, meaning that you don't need to waste time or resources on refinement.

And it's super easy to work with.

If you've ever taken a pottery class, you know that clay and water, when mixed in the proper proportions, forms a material that's easy to shape.

Put that through a kiln, and you've got something great for mugs and dishes!

For something a little sturdier, you might try using cement.

It's mainly used as a binder to help hold concrete together,

which means you can find it everywhere from roads, dams, and buildings, to more decorative applications like patios and staircases.

One big benefit of using cement is that it can set at room temperature.

Imagine if you had to break out some big flamethrower every time you wanted to pave a new road!

So yeah, you could say cement's properties make it an important part of our lives.

Ceramics and metals also show up in places you might not expect them, like with microelectromechanical systems, or MEMS.

These are miniature smart systems that use tiny sensors to collect information by measuring things like mechanical, thermal, chemical, or optical properties.

They then use the information to make decisions that tell devices called microactuators to do something, like move a fluid or redirect a beam of light.

A major application of MEMS these days is something you probably know pretty well: the accelerometer.

For example, there's one in your phone to detect its movement.

And cars have accelerometers that trigger airbags to deploy during a crash.

Compared to older and more conventional airbag systems, ones that use MEMS are smaller, lighter, more reliable, and quite a bit cheaper to produce.

And with something as important and life-saving as an airbag, those are big benefits!

So, there's a lot to consider when choosing between materials.

For a set of braces, metal brackets tend to be more durable and are better at correcting severely unaligned teeth,

while ceramics tend to irritate the mouth less and aren't as visible.

And then there are your personal preferences, which also matter.

Other factors, like time, resources, and design limitations, might also influence your designs in the field.

It's all about finding materials with the properties that make them the best fit for want you want to accomplish.

So today we learned more about two of the three main types of materials that we use as engineers: metals and ceramics.

We saw the properties of metals and how we often use them as alloys in our designs.

Then we went over ceramics and the importance of clay, cement, and glass-ceramic materials.

Top 10 Differences Between Fortnite On Console & PC - Duration: 6:50.

There will always be a heated debate about whether console or PC gaming is better. For

some, they see PC as the superior way to game, and being of a higher tier when it comes to

competitive gaming, whereas console fans prefer the simplicity of controls that PS4s or Xbox

One's boast, and believe that not playing a game on PC doesn't mean you're missing

out in anyway on what the game has to fully offer. When it comes to games that appear

on multiple platforms, this debate often gets even more heated, and currently, one of the

biggest games that appears on pretty much any gaming platform is the worldwide sensation,

Fortnite. So you bet your butt there's been an argument or two amongst fans who are PC

loyalists versus those who like to play on console. So today, we're breaking down those

arguments with our list of the top 10 differences between fortnite on console and Pc.

10 Frames Per Second There's a limit on the FPS you get out of

a console versus what a PC is capable of. On a console you can get 60 FPS whereas on

a PC, depending on what your specs are, you can have up to 300 FPS. Now to some, you may

think, meh, not really necessary when it comes to enjoying your game. To others, that difference

is a big deal. So I suppose you've gotten determine where your priorities are. Generally,

a higher FPS allows for a smoother gaming experience, with significantly less lag, resulting

in better performance of your games overall.

9 Setting your button Preferences There are only so many buttons on your console's

controller. Whether you're playing on the PS4, Xbox One of the Switch, you're somewhat

limited to by the number of buttons on a controller. On PC, there's more options. Have a particular

way that you find your hands like to sit on your keyboard, or the way your fingers innately

react to certain keys? You can always adjust your button settings to easily satisfy those

preferences.

8 Preference Of a different sort! Really the console vs

PC debate comes down to what you're more comfortable or familiar with. While starting

out on either for the first time has its own learning curve, playing Fortnite on the platform

that is the most familiar to you will always feel like you have a better grasp on the game

compared to playing on a platform that you're unfamiliar with. Personally, I'd rather

play it on the Switch or the PS4 compared to the PC, since I'm a bit of a Playstation

loyalist, and generally just like the Switch's controls. And most games, if you throw me

on a PC, it'll take me a while to get comfortable with the controls, since I rarely play on

PC. Not saying anything against the advantages that playing on PC has, it's just not my

jam. So if you're debating about playing the game and have multiple platforms to choose

from, but are determined to be as competitive as possible, pick the one that is the most

comfortable one for you if you're really having difficulty deciding.

7 The Challenge Speaking of playing for the challenge, many

fans of the game play competitively. Whether that means professionally or just for the

sake of reaching tier 100 and not being knocked out of a match outside of the top ten spots.

Since activates like building and shooting (which, we'll touch on later) there is arguably

a higher level of competency visible in matches, generally PC is seen as being the more competitive

of the platforms to play on. This isn't to say that overall average skill level is

lower on console, just that in terms of flexibility and versatility that the keyboard and mouse

give you, the games are generally of a different pace. Fortnite was initially built for PC,

despite part of its mass popularity being thanks for console users. And! Remember, cross

platform in Fortnite when it comes to battle Royale doesn't happen randomly; players

on different platforms aren't randomly thrown into servers together, but rather, you can

join parties with your pals who are playing on different platforms. The Save the World

mode works a little differently, but considering the more popular mode is Battle Royale, it's

safe to say you probably won't be coming up against any PC players while you're playing

on console.

6 Your Screen Now typically when playing on PC, you're

using a monitor. What size monitor that is is totally up to you, but generally, you're

not playing on a screen of massive proportions. But, when it comes to playing console, you

often can have a very different screen experience. You're not typically playing while sitting

right in front of your screen. You could be sitting on a couch, staring out at a massive

television screen, if that's your prerogative. While this may seem like a very vapid point,

its worth keeping in mind how the proximity of your screen can affect your eyes. Many

a professional gamer owns a pair of glasses, like Gunnar glasses, that helps put less strain

on your peepers. The more distance, generally, the better.

5 Your Hands Not a handsy kind of guy or gal? Not the best

when it comes to hand eye coordination but still love shooters? Well, console might be

more up your alley than PC. Obviously, like noted in our previous number, that kind of

thing falls down to preference, but what your hands will be doing on a controller (and how

they sit on a controller) may be more intuitive to some compared to the layout of a keyboard.

4 Streaming differences I mean, this is kind of not a big deal, but

hey, we have ten numbers to fill. Many a player capture their footage and stream their Fortnite

games. So the way in which you stream (and the possibilities of what you can add on to

that stream) are a little limited when streaming directly off console. For example, with Playstation,

you're limited to just using the playstation headset and camera if you want to stream.

You can still connect to Twitch, but compared to your options when streaming on PC, it's

not nearly as flexible.

3 Movement Away from peripherals and returning to game

mechanics for this number! Your movement in Fortnite varies a little between console and

PC. When playing on PC, thanks to your mouse and keyboard, you're able to swivel around

significantly faster than you can on your console.

2 Building Building is significantly easier on PC. Why?

You're a bit limited in terms of your controls on console compared to what you have on PC.

Not only can you build faster due to button placement and accessibility, but since you

can literally map out your button controls to be whatever you'd like them to be on

your keyboard, you're just going to get faster building experience, and can edit your

builds faster, too. The difference is noticeable when you compare building on a PS4 versus

building on PC.

1 Accuracy It's generally agreed using that playing

Fortnite on PC is more advantageous when it comes to aiming at your foes. The mouse generally

allows you to move more fluidly versus using the joysticks on your controllers. So this

means you not only aim faster, but using a mouse also allows for more precision, which

can make a huge difference when aiming from a distance. Using a mouse also allows you

to have more ease when jumping and shooting. PC also doesn't have aim assist, and on

console, you can't see your curser.

There we have it friends! What's your opinion on Fortnite PC versus Console? Do you have

a preference? Or do you not give a s***? Give us a shout in those comments below and let
