Hi, I'm Meg Miller with Critical Next Step and this is two minutes with Meg today. I'm gonna talk about
choosing your agent for your health care
So when you have your health care directive filled out or you're in the process of you're gonna choose one
I would encourage two people you have your primary person in your secondary person should the primary person not be able to do that?
you can pick two with equals speak and
all of that and that's between
You and and your people but basically will work with your primary agent and this is when you cannot speak for
Yourself and this person will work with all of your health care professionals
they have a legal document your health care directive and it's been either notarized or witnessed and
they are able to calmly and efficiently work with your health care professionals as well as
Calmly and effectively work with your loved ones and your family
Again, you want to trust this person with your life because basically your life is in their hands as well as your
healthcare professional.
But they are going to make sure
That the doctors follow what your health care directive says, this is all you know
If you're in the hospital setting and they refer to your health care directive
Etc
but anyway, if you don't want heroic measures given where your health is in at that time and your family opposes that
your agent must be able to
Represent you and what your form says whether your family is an agreement or not
But you also want them to be diplomatic and also to be discerning
depending on what information they've been given. They may even
discuss with your family if you want them to or not if you don't want them to so basically it's
Partnership only they're speaking again on your behalf. So having that health care directive in place
with a person who can speak for you when emotions are high and
There could be a lot of trauma around and again, this does not have to be your spouse
It doesn't have to be your child
It can be a close friend or it can be someone that you work with who you know will speak on your behalf
period
Because if you don't plan your estate the state will plan it for you. Who has your best interests at heart?
