Why I would return to the Gloriavale cult | Q&A - Duration: 2:19.um if you could go back in time is there
something you would change or like have
said before you leave Gloria Vail so I
probably would have maybe tried to
influence my friends a little more and
teach them a bit more about the outside
world so I was in a really interesting
position because I was able to work as a
graphic designer
for glory about businesses and that
enabled me a bit more internet access
them because I had internet access I was
able to learn more about the world
outside Gloria Vail because the reason
that people stay in glory of ours they
don't know any better and they don't
know any different because that's the
way that they grew up most of the people
who are still in Gloria Val today didn't
choose to join Gloria Val they didn't
walk past and think that looks like a
really nice place I want to join they
were born there and they don't know
anything different the mums and their
dads were often born there as well so
it's generationally traditional way of
living for them and so I would love to
just maybe introduce my friends to some
music like Taylor Swift or Beyonce like
all those little things to me gave me a
different understanding of how women
could be in the world because I didn't
know that you couldn't not wear a
headscarf I didn't know that you could
have a career I didn't know that you
didn't have to have babies if you don't
want to like you can actually choose
what you want to do with your life if
you want to be an engineer or a mechanic
go do that if you want to be a youtuber
and you just want to talk about making
slime 24/7 do that by the way I spend my
weekend making slime and cupcakes
because I have like too far for little
sisters well one of them's not so little
but you know you can live a life that
you totally love and I would like my
friends and Gloria Vail who are still
there - no they can do that yeah how's
that good
you

National for Sunday September 2, 2018 — NAFTA, Whistleblower Protection, Regulating Airbnb - Duration: 46:51.(*)
>> Adrienne: ON THIS SUNDAY
NIGHT, NEGOTIATIONS MAY BE ON
PAUSE BUT THAT HASN'T STOPPED
TRUMP'S TRADE THREATS.
CAN THE PRESIDENT REALLY FOLLOW
THROUGH ON ALL OF THAT TOUGH
TALK?
AND HOW WILL CANADA RESPOND?
>>> AND THE COST OF COMING
FORWARD.
A WHISTLEBLOWER'S EMOTIONAL
STORY ABOUT JUST WHAT HAPPENS
AFTER YOU GO PUBLIC.
>>> PLUS THE NATIONAL SUMMER
PASTTIME THAT IS DRIVING
BEACH-GOERS CRAZY.
THIS IS "THE NATIONAL."
(*)
>>> NAFTA TALKS ARE ON HOLD FOR
THIS LONG WEEKEND BUT DONALD
TRUMP'S TWITTER ACCOUNT IS NOT.
THE PRESIDENT ONCE AGAIN
SLAMMING CANADA AND THREATENING
TO JUST PULL OUT OF THE DEAL.
LYNDSAY DUNCOMBE BRINGS US THE
LATEST.
>> Reporter: FROM HIS GOLF
COURSE DONALD TRUMP TOOK A SWING
AT CANADA, TWEETING THREATS TO
LEAVE NAFTA ALL TOGETHER.
COMPLAINING THAT THE U.S. HAS
ENDURED DECADES OF ABUSE.
THE CANADIAN RESPONSE?
>> OUR PHILOSOPHY IS TO KEEP
CALM AND CARRY ON.
THERE IS A SENSE THAT WE CAN GET
IT ACROSS THE FINISH LINE BUT
THERE'S A CERTAIN DEGREE OF
IT ACROSS THE FINISH LINE BUT
THERE'S A CERTAIN DEGREE OF
VOLATILITY AMONGST CERTAIN OF
THE KEY PLAYERS.
>> Reporter: BY KEY PLAYERS HE
MEANS THE PRESIDENT HIMSELF.
TRUMP CAMPAIGNED ON SCRAPPING
NAFTA AND HE DOESN'T SEEM THE
TYPE TO ACCEPT A REASONABLE
COMPROMISE.
>> IN DONALD TRUMP'S MIND,
CANADA NEEDS TO SURRENDER.
>> Reporter: BUT THE FAILURE
TO REACH A DEAL BY THE FRIDAY
DEADLINE EXPOSES THE REALITY
THAT HE CAN'T ALWAYS GET WHAT HE
WANTS.
CONGRESS HAS THE FINAL SAY ON
TRADE AND LAWMAKERS FROM BOTH
PARTIES WERE QUICK TO SAY THEY
WON'T VOTE FOR A DEAL WITHOUT
CANADA.
THERE'S ALSO SUPPORT FOR CANADA
FROM BUSINESS LEADERS, FARMERS
AND UNIONS.
>> OUR ECONOMIES ARE INTEGRATED.
THE THREE COUNTRIES IN NORTH
AMERICA THE ECONOMY IS PRETTY
INTEGRATED.
AND IT'S PRETTY HARD TO SEE HOW
THAT WOULD WORK WITHOUT HAVING
CANADA IN THE DEAL.
>> Reporter: AS FOR TRUMP'S
THREAT TO PULL OUT OF THE DEAL
ENTIRELY, HE CAN'T DO THAT
QUICKLY OR EASILY EITHER.
CONGRESS NEEDS SIX MONTHS
NOTICE.
AND MANY WORRY THAT IF TRUMP
DOES IMPOSE TARIFFS ON CANADIAN
VEHICLES AS HE HAS THREATENED
THE INTEGRATED ECONOMY MEANS
AMERICAN WORKERS WOULD LOSE
THEIR JOBS.
>> I THINK THAT THE PRESIDENT
HAS THIS WRONG AND HE'S PLAYING
WITH FIRE.
>> Reporter: NEITHER SIDE IS
TALKING ABOUT DETAILS OF THE
NEGOTIATIONS, BUT LIKELY
STICKING
POINTS INCLUDE ACCESS TO THE
DAIRY MARKET AND A DISPUTE
RESOLUTION MECHANISM.
TALKS RESUME HERE IN WASHINGTON
ON WEDNESDAY.
>> Adrienne: THE CBC'S LYNDSAY
DUNCOMBE IN WASHINGTON TONIGHT.
AS SHE TOLD US THERE'S NO WAY TO
KNOW HOW THIS WILL CONCLUDE BUT
WHAT IF WORSE CAME TO WORSE AND
CANADA WAS LEFT OUT OF NAFTA?
WELL, THERE MIGHT BE A SAFETY
NET.
SOME EXPERTS THINK THAT THE OLD
CANADA-U.S. TRADE AGREEMENT
WOULD COME BACK INTO FORCE.
OTHERS SAY THAT'S NOT A SURE
THING.
IT MIGHT EVEN REQUIRE A
PRESIDENTIAL ORDER.
SO WHAT MIGHT A POST-NAFTA WORLD
LOOK LIKE?
WELL, REPORTS FROM R.B.C. SAY
THAT SOME INDUSTRIES HAVE SO
MUCH CROSS-BORDER INTEGRATION
THEY COULDN'T UNRAVEL IT
QUICKLY.
TARIFF HIKES WOULD LIKELY HIT
CORPORATE PROFITS AND CONSUMER
PRICES SOONER THAN WORKERS.
ACCORDING TO MOODY'S, INVESTORS
SERVICES, NEW BRUNSWICK AND
ONTARIO COULD BE
HARDEST HIT BASED ON HOW MUCH OF
THEIR ECONOMIES DEPEND ON
EXPORTS TO THE U.S.
B.C. IS CONSIDERED THE SAFEST.
>>> HERE'S WHAT ELSE WE'RE
WORKING ON TONIGHT ON "THE
NATIONAL"...
>>> ANOTHER DEADLY SHOOTING IN
TORONTO AFTER A VIOLENT WEEKEND
IN THE G.T.A.
>>> PLUS, RELIEF IN CHURCHILL,
MANITOBA, WHERE THE MISERY OF
LIFE IS CUT OFF BY A BROKEN RAIL
LINK WHICH COULD SOON COME TO AN
END.
>>> FIRST, THE STEEP PRICE OF
SPEAKING OUT IN CANADA.
AN E.I. FRAUD INVESTIGATOR LEFT
JOBLESS, BANKRUPT AND LOOKING
FOR HELP AFTER SHE BLEW THE
WHISTLE ON HER EMPLOYER.
AS "GO PUBLIC'S" ERICA JOHNSON
FOUND OUT, WHISTLEBLOWING CAN BE
A DICEY BUSINESS IN THIS
COUNTRY.
>> Reporter: AND ANOTHER
ARTICLE ABOUT WHEN YOU SPOKE OUT
OUT?
>> YES.
>> Reporter: IT WAS BIG NEWS
WHEN SYLVIE THERRIEN SPOKE OUT.
SHE USED TO HOLD A $60,000 A
YEAR JOB, INVESTIGATING
FRAUDULENT E.I. CLAIMS.
>> THAT WAS THE FIRST ONE, IT
WAS REALLY INTENSE.
>> Reporter: BUT WHEN THE
CONSERVATIVE GOVERNMENT TOLD
INVESTIGATORS TO EACH SAVE HALF
A MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR BY
DISQUALIFYING PEOPLE FROM
BENEFITS, SHE LEAKED THE STORY
TO THE MEDIA.
>> THEY'RE EACH REQUIRED TO FIND
HALF A MILLION DOLLARS IN FRAUD.
IT PRESUMES THAT THERE'S
WIDESPREAD
FRAUD AND THEY'RE ALL A BUNCH OF
CHEATERS AND CRIMINALS.
>> Reporter: HE CALLED THEM
TARGETS.
CONTROVERSY MADE FOR GOOD
SATIRE.
>> EXCUSE ME SIR.
I'M WITH SERVICE CANADA, P.E.I.,
P.I.s...
[laughter]
>> Reporter: BUT IT WAS NO
LAUGHING MATTER FOR THERRIEN.
A FEW MONTHS LATER SHE WAS
FIRED.
SHE SPENT THE PAST FIVE YEARS
TRYING TO GET HER JOB BACK.
SHE'S UNEMPLOYED AND BANKRUPT.
>> IT'S FINANCIALLY DIFFICULT
BUT IT'S EMOTIONALLY DIFFICULT.
>> Reporter: THERRIEN
SUBMITTED A COMPLAINT TO THE
OFFICE OF THE INTEGRITY
COMMISSIONER, CREATED
11 YEARS AGO TO INVESTIGATE
WRONGDOING IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR
AND TO PROTECT WHISTLEBLOWERS.
THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T LOOK AT
HER
CASE WHILE THE LABOUR BOARD
INVESTIGATED.
A FEDERAL COURT OF APPEAL RULED
THAT THE FEDERAL COMMISSIONER
COULD INVESTIGATE, BUT IT'S
CHOSEN NOT TO.
>> THE PROCESS IS LIKE, YOU
KNOW, IT'S TORTUROUS.
>> MY NAME IS JOE FRIDAY AND,
YES, IT'S MY REAL NAME.
>> Reporter: THE INTEGRITY
COMMISSIONER
DECLINED A REQUEST TO DISCUSS
WHY
THERRIEN'S CASE AND DOZENS AND
DOZENS OF OTHERS ARE TAKING
YEARS TO BE ADDRESSED.
THIS WHISTLEBLOWER ADVOCATE SAYS
THAT THE SYSTEM TO PROTECT
PEOPLE WHO SPEAK OUT IS CLEARLY
NOT WORKING.
>> NO ONE HAS EVER BEEN
PROTECTED THROUGH THIS AND
THERE'S NO CHANGES TO THE LAW
AND NO ATTEMPT TO RECTIFY THIS.
THESE ARE GOOD, HONEST PEOPLE
DOING THE RIGHT THING TO PROTECT
US, TO PROTECT THE PUBLIC, AND
THEY'VE LOST EVERYTHING.
>> Adrienne: ERICA IS JOINING
US NOW FROM VANCOUVER.
SO, ERICA, WE HEARD A
WHISTLEBLOWER ADVOCATE SAID THAT
THE SYSTEM DESIGNED TO PROTECT
PEOPLE HASN'T DONE THAT AT ALL.
SO HOW DO WE QUANTIFY THAT
FAILURE?
>> Reporter: WELL, IT'S NOT
REALLY VERY GOOD NEWS FOR PUBLIC
SERVANTS THAT ARE HOPING FOR
PROTECTION IF THEY SPEAK OUT.
IF YOU TAKE A LOOK AT THE STATS,
SINCE THE OFFICE OF THE
INTEGRITY COMMISSIONER WAS
CREATED 11 YEARS AGO, 306 PUBLIC
SERVANTS WHO HAVE SUFFERED
REPRISALS HAVE FILED COMPLAINTS.
OF THOSE 306, ONLY EIGHT PEOPLE
HAVE MADE IT TO THE TRIBUNAL
STAGE AND OF THOSE ONLY ONE HAS
RECEIVED A DECISION.
AND THAT DECISION WAS NOT IN HER
FAVOUR.
>> Adrienne: OKAY, SO THERE
YOU GO, THERE'S THE CHILL EFFECT
ON ANYONE CONTEMPLATING BLOWING
THE WHISTLE.
WHEN IT COMES TO HER ORIGINAL
OBJECTIVE OF E.I. THOUGH, WHAT'S
CHANGED INSIDE OF THAT SYSTEM?
>> Reporter: WELL, RIGHT,
SYLVIE THERRIEN FELT THAT IT
WASN'T RIGHT TO HAVE A TARGET OR
A
QUOTA TO DISQUALIFY PEOPLE FROM
E.I. BENEFITS TO SIMPLY SAVE
MONEY FOR THE GOVERNMENT.
WE HAVE CONTACTED THE NOW
LIBERAL GOVERNMENT AND ASKED IF
THAT DIRECTIVE STILL EXISTS.
THEY SAY THERE'S NO LONGER
QUOTAS OR TARGETS FOR
INDIVIDUAL
FRAUD INVESTIGATORS.
>> Adrienne: SOME CHANGE.
LISTEN, THANK YOU FOR THIS,
ERICA.
>> Reporter: GOOD TO TALK TO
YOU.
>> Adrienne: THE MAN THAT YOU
SAW IN ERICA'S PIECE, DAVID
HUTTON, WHO IS A LONG-TIME
ADVOCATE FOR WHISTLEBLOWER
PROTECTION SAYS THAT
INTERNATIONALLY CANADA HAS A
REPUTATION AS BEING THE TITANIC
OF WHISTLEBLOWER PROTECTION.
IN OTHER WORDS, DISASTROUS.
THERE'S NO REAL PROTECTION AT
ALL.
CANADA FALLS BEHIND THE U.S.,
THE E.U. AND AUSTRALIA IN HOW IT
SHIELDS THOSE WHO ARE BRAVE
ENOUGH TO BLOW THE WHISTLE ON
SCANDALS AND CORRUPTION AND
WRONGDOING BY THE POWERFUL.
SO IN CANADA THERE IS A CRIMINAL
CODE PROVISION, 425.1.
IT MAKES IT AN OFFENSE FOR AN
EMPLOYER TO THREATEN OR TO TAKE
ACTION AGAINST AN EMPLOYEE TO
PUNISH THEM OR TO STEER THEM
AWAY FROM TALKING TO LAW
ENFORCEMENT.
BUT HERE'S THE KICKER -- THE LAW
DOES NOT APPLY TO EMPLOYEES WHO
REPORT WRONGDOING TO THE MEDIA.
THERE WAS A PARLIAMENTARY
COMMITTEE HEARING IN JUNE 2017
THAT LED TO A RAFT OF
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CHANGES BUT
NONE OF THEM WAS ACCEPTED.
NOW THERE'S A LETTER WRITING
CAMPAIGN UNDERWAY FROM DEMOCRACY
WATCH TO PUSH FOR PROTECTION FOR
ALL WHISTLEBLOWERS, PUBLIC OR
PRIVATE SECTOR, NO MATTER WHO
THEY'RE REPORTING THE WRONGDOING
TO.
>>> LET'S GET YOU UP TO SPEED ON
THE OTHER DEVELOPING STORIES
THAT WE'RE WATCHING TONIGHT.
STARTING WITH A HUGE FIRE IN
BRAZIL THAT BROKE OUT LATE THIS
EVENING.
HAVE A LOOK AT THAT.
THIS IS THE SCENE OF THE
NATIONAL MUSEUM OF BRAZIL IN
RIO de JANEIRO.
IT'S THE OLDEST SCIENCE
INSTITUTION IN THE COUNTRY.
THE FIRE BROKE OUT AFTER THE
MUSEUM CLOSED FOR THE DAY.
THIS MUSEUM IS ABOUT 1200 YEARS
OLD AND IT'S HOME TO THOUSANDS
OF HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL
ARTIFACTS, INCLUDING DINOSAUR
BONES.
IT'S NOT CLEAR WHAT SPARKED THE
BLAZE.
>>> AND THE DISCOVERY OF A YOUNG
BOY'S BODY TODAY ON A SAS BEACH.
THAT'S HIS FAMILY WARNING OTHERS
ABOUT WATER SAFETY.
7-YEAR-OLD GREAGAN GELDENHUYS
WAS LAST SEEN ON AUGUST 24th.
HIS MOTHER'S BODY WAS FOUND THE
NEXT DAY JUST DOWN THE LAKE FROM
WHERE YOUNG GREAGAN'S BODY WAS
FOUND TODAY.
POLICE AREN'T SAYING WHAT
HAPPENED TO THE PLAY BUT THEY
DON'T SUSPECT FOUL PLAY.
>> SCARY.
IT'S SO CLOSE TO HOME.
I MEAN, IT'S GETTING TO THE
POINT YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE
YOU'RE SAFE ANYMORE IN THIS
CITY.
>> Adrienne: A FATAL SHOOTING
HAPPENED IN A DOWNTOWN AREA NEAR
CANADA'S BIGGEST FAIRGROUNDS,
THE C.N.
RENÉE FILIPPONE WATCHES
DEVELOPING STORIES FOR US SUNDAY
ON "THE NATIONAL."
RENEE, THERE'S BEEN A STRING OF
THESE DEADLY SHOOTINGS IN
TORONTO THIS SUMMER.
WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT WHAT
HAPPENED TONIGHT?
>> Reporter: WELL, ADRIENNE,
THERE ARE MULTIPLE CRIME SCENES
ACROSS THE CITY TONIGHT.
THE LATEST IS AT CORONATION PARK
IN THE HEART OF TORONTO, NEAR
THE LAKEFRONT.
A 30-YEAR-OLD MAN WAS KILLED,
FOUR PEOPLE WERE SEEN RUNNING
AWAY FROM THE AREA.
AND POLICE SAY THAT THE SHOOTING
HAPPENED INSIDE OF THE PARK NEAR
THE BASEBALL DIAMOND.
IT'S ALREADY BEEN A DEADLY LONG
WEEKEND IN THE TORONTO AREA.
SATURDAY NIGHT THERE WERE TWO
SEPARATE SHOOTINGS IN BRAMPTON
AND TWO MEN WERE KILLED AND A
WOMAN WAS INJURED AND POLICE
BELIEVE THAT THE TWO ATTACKS ARE
RELATED AND TARGETED.
AND THEN THIS MORNING IN
SCARBOROUGH IN EAST TORONTO,
A MAN WAS KILLED IN A DOUBLE
SHOOTING.
IT HAPPENED IN A GARAGE.
NEIGHBOURS SAY THEY HEARD SHOTS
WHEN WHEN POLICE ARRIVED ON
THE SCENE TWO MEN WERE ON THE
GROUND WITH GUNSHOT WOUNDS.
A MAN NAMED SHAMAR SAYS HE KNEW
THE VICTIMS...
>> THIS SHOOTING COULD HAPPEN TO
ANYBODY, WE'RE IN THE HOOD.
THIS HAPPENS ON A DAILY BASIS.
THIS IS WHAT WE GREW UP TO LIVE
IN.
WE ALREADY UNDERSTAND THIS.
WE UNDERSTAND THAT PEOPLE DO
DROP OUT AND WE UNDERSTAND THAT
PEOPLE DO RETALIATE.
SO WHAT ELSE DO YOU REALLY THINK
THAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN?
>> Reporter: THERE HAVE NOW
BEEN 73 HOMICIDES IN
THE CITY THIS YEAR.
ALREADY MORE THAN LAST YEAR AS A
WHOLE.
ALL OF THIS IS PUTTING THE SPOT
LIGHT ON GUN VIOLENCE AND JUST
HOW TO TACKLE IT.
THE CITY HAS CALLED FOR A BAN ON
HANDGUNS, SOMETHING
THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SAYS
IT WILL LOOK INTO.
ADRIENNE?
>> Adrienne: RENEE, THANK YOU
VERY MUCH.
>> Reporter: YOU'RE WELCOME.
>> Adrienne: SO IF YOU ARE IN
VANCOUVER OFFERING A RENTAL ON
AIRBNB YOU NOW HAVE TO HAVE A
LICENCE.
AS BRIAR STEWART EXPLAINS THIS
IS PART OF THE CITY'S PLAN TO
DEAL WITH A COMMON CRISIS OF
AFFORDABLE HOUSING.
>> Reporter: MISS RODRIGUEZ
HAS BEEN
CONCERNED ABOUT SHORT-TERM
RENTALS FOR YEARS.
>> THERE'S MOUNT PLEASANT...
>> Reporter: IT BEGAN AFTER
SHE SAW UNITS IN HER
THREE-STOREY APARTMENT BUILDING
ON AIRBNB.
>> OFTEN WHEN A CONVERSATION
ABOUT
AIRBNB AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING
COMES UP IT'S THE SINGLE FAMILY
HOMES OR IT'S THE GLASS TOWERS.
THERE'S A LOT OF BUILDINGS LIKE
THIS BEING AFFECTED.
>> Reporter: WHICH IS WHY SHE
WAS INITIALLY HOPEFUL WHEN THE
CITY OF
VANCOUVER ROLLED OUT SHORT-TERM
RENTAL REGULATIONS IN THE
SPRING.
>> SO THE CITY HAS LAUNCHED A
NEW SHORT-TERM RENTAL
PROGRAMME...
>> Reporter: UNDER THE BY-LAW
PEOPLE CAN ONLY RENT OUT THE
PLACE IF IT'S THEIR PRIMARY
RESIDENCE.
THEY HAVE TO HAVE A BUSINESS
LICENCE.
PEOPLE HAD TO THE END OF AUGUST
TO APPLY FOR ONE.
AND CITY OFFICIALS SAY THAT
THERE'S 10 PLATFORMS THAT
ADVERTISE SHORT-TERM RENTALS IN
VANCOUVER BUT THE VAST MAJORITY
ARE ON AIRBNB.
NOW THAT THE NEW REGULATIONS ARE
IN EFFECT, CITY STAFF ARE GOING
THROUGH THE LISTINGS LOOKING FOR
THOSE WHO AREN'T COMPLYING WITH
THE NEW RULES.
THEY'RE ALSO GETTING HELP FROM
AIRBNB.
THE COMPANY IS SHARING ITS DATA.
IN AN ONLINE POST AIRBNB SAID IT
DEACTIVATED NEARLY 2,500
LISTINGS AFTER THE RULES CAME
INTO EFFECT.
BUT MOST OF THOSE LISTINGS
WEREN'T AT ALL THAT ACTIVE AND
HADN'T
BEEN BOOKED IN THE LAST 12
MONTHS.
THERE'S STILL NEARLY 4,800
LISTINGS ONLINE.
>> I WAS CURIOUS MYSELF AND I
THOUGHT THAT THE GENERAL PUBLIC
MIGHT BE TOO.
>> Reporter: HE'S BEEN
ANALYSING THE AIRBNB LISTINGS
AND HE SAYS
THAT EVEN SOME OF THOSE WHO
APPEAR TO BE COMPLYING WITH THE
RULES AREN'T.
>> AMONG THE PEOPLE THAT DID USE
A VALID LICENCE NUMBER, THERE
WAS ABUSE OF HOW THAT IS TO BE
USED.
SO PEOPLE, FOR EXAMPLE, USED THE
SAME LICENCE FOR MULTIPLE
LISTINGS.
>> Reporter: HE'S NOTICED THAT
A SLEW OF AIRBNB HOSTS HAVE
RECENTLY ALTERED THEIR LISTINGS.
THEY ONLY RENT
FOR A MINIMUM OF 30 DAYS WHICH
MEANS THAT THE SHORT-TERM RENTAL
RULES DON'T APPLY.
>> THERE'S A LOT OF GAPS, TO PUT
IT KINDLY.
>> Reporter: RODRIGUEZ SAYS
THAT ENFORCEMENT NEEDS TO BE A
PRIORITY BUT AT LEAST SHE'S GLAD
THAT MORE PEOPLE ARE NOW TAKING
A CLOSER LOOK AT SHORT-TERM
RENTALS AND
HOW THEY AFFECT AFFORDABLE
HOUSING.
BRIAR STEWART, CBC NEWS,
VANCOUVER.
>> Adrienne: IT'S POSSIBLE
THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WILL
BE GETTING INVOLVED IN THIS.
AIRBNB TOLD THE HOUSE OF COMMONS
FINANCE COMMITTEE LAST MONTH
THAT IT WANTS TO BE REGULATED.
BRITISH COLUMBIA, QUÉBEC AND A
HANDFUL OF INDIVIDUAL CITIES,
INCLUDING OTTAWA, ALREADY HAVE
RULES IN PLACE AS WELL AS
AGREEMENTS TO GET TAX REVENUE
FROM AIRBNB PROVIDERS.
IT SEEMS THAT'S PAYING OFF.
QUÉBEC HAS ALREADY NETTED ABOUT
$2.8 MILLION IN THE FIRST SIX
MONTHS OF ITS DEAL WITH AIRBNB.
>>> SO NOW TO A DIFFICULT
ANNIVERSARY FOR A TINY COMMUNITY
IN NOVA SCOTIA.
20 YEARS AGO SWISSAIR FLIGHT 111
CRASHED INTO THE WATERS OFF OF
PEGGYS COVE, KILLING ALL 229
PASSENGERS ONBOARD.
>> YOU ALWAYS CARRY IT IN THE
HEART.
YOU JUST TRY TO MOVE ON AND LIVE
WITH IT, LIVE WITH THE FACT THAT
IT HAPPENED.
AND SHE'S NOT COMING BACK.
>> Adrienne: RELATIVES OF THE
VICTIMS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS
GATHERED AT A MEMORIAL SERVICE
IN BAYSWATER, NOVA SCOTIA.
IT WAS A TRIBUTE, OF COURSE, TO
THE
LIVES LOST BUT ALSO AN
OPPORTUNITY TO RECOGNIZE THE
CONTRIBUTIONS OF THOSE WHO
HELPED RECOVER BODIES AND
DEBRIS.
MANY OF WHOM ARE FOREVER CHANGED
BY WHAT THEY SAW TWO DECADES
AGO.
ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO JUST
JUMPED IN TO HELP IS DAVID
ZWICKER.
HE WORKED WITH THE CITY OF
HALIFAX AT THE TIME AND HE SPENT
THE
NEXT 76 DAYS ASSISTING WITH THE
RECOVERY PROCESS ON THE
GOVERNMENT WHARF.
AND TONIGHT HE'S OUR WITNESS...
>> THE BOATS WERE COMING IN AND
WE WERE
PACKING THE STUFF INTO BODY BAGS
AND PUTTING IT IN THE
TRACTOR-TRAILER COOLERS.
IT KIND OF GREW ON ME RIGHT FAST
AND
I KNOW OTHERS AS WELL BECAUSE
THE NEXT DAY IT WAS LIKE IT WAS
ALL GONE UNTIL EVERYTHING WAS
OVER.
YOU KNOW, WE JUST GOT IN AND DID
WHAT WE HAD TO DO FOR THE
COMMUNITY AND FOR THOSE PEOPLE.
IT WAS A TERRIBLE DISASTER.
AT THE TIME MEETING THE PEOPLE,
I WENT TO SUPPER IN HALIFAX WITH
THEM AND WE WENT TO THE
CONVENTION CENTRE.
AND WE HAD A BIG DO WITH THEM.
EVEN THOUGH IT WAS ONLY THREE OR
FOUR DAYS, YOU REALLY GOT TO
KNOW THEM.
SOME DAYS WERE ROUGH, ROUGH,
ROUGH.
THE RCMP WANTED ME TO GO FOR A
LITTLE BIT OF, YOU KNOW, I GUESS
IT WAS CALLED AT THE TIME A
CLASS AND SUCH.
BUT I DID GO FOR A WHILE BUT I
COULD HAVE TAKEN MORE.
THERE'S NOT A DAY THAT GOES BY
THAT I DON'T THINK ABOUT IT.
AND I DRIVE TO PEGGYS COVE QUITE
OFTEN AND SIT DOWN THERE.
THEY SAY AS TIME GOES ON IT GETS
BETTER.
I GUESS THAT IT DOES.
I GUESS IT DOES.
THERE'S STILL DAYS WHEN I'M
TALKING TO THE RIGHT PEOPLE THAT
I COULD WEEP A LITTLE.
YEAH.
>> Adrienne: SO DAVID ZWICKER
WAS ONE OF ABOUT 2,800 PEOPLE
WHO JOINED THE RECOVERY EFFORT
THEN.
THERE ARE SURELY OTHERS WHO
STILL CARRY THAT SAME BURDEN.
>>> STILL AHEAD ON "THE
NATIONAL,"
BATTLING SHRINKING POPULATIONS
WITH SMALL COMMUNITY CHARM.
WE LOOK AT THE PROVINCIAL
PROGRAMME ATTRACTING NEWCOMERS
BY PROVIDING THE PERSONAL TOUCH.
>>> PLUS, WHY THE INTERNET IS
RALLYING FOR A ROBOT STRANDED ON
MARS.
THE STORY BEHIND THE CALL TO
WAKE UP, OPPY.
>>> IT'S A GAME FOR SOME AND A
WHOLE LIFESTYLE FOR OTHERS.
DEREK STOFFEL SHOWS US THE GAME
THAT IS MAKING WAVES ON THE
BEACHES OF ISRAEL IN THIS WEEK'S
"DISPATCH."
>> WE COULD SAY THAT IT'S LIKE
TENNIS BUT WE PLAY IT WITH THIS
AND THE BALL IS SOMETHING LIKE
THAT.
AND WE HAVE TO GET THE BALL FROM
ONE TO THE OTHER ONE.
(*)
>> Adrienne: IT'S A SMALL
STRETCH OF RAIL BUT IT'S MADE
LIFE HUGELY DIFFICULT IN
CHURCHILL, MANITOBA.
THE COMMUNITY HAS BEEN ISOLATED,
CUT OFF BY LAND SINCE THE FLOODS
DAMAGED THE LINE SOME 16 MONTHS
AGO.
BUT AS ERIN BROHMAN TELLS US,
THINGS ARE STARTING TO LOOK UP.
>> Reporter: HOPE HANGS OVER
THE
HORIZON IN CANADA'S NORTH, HOPE
THAT THE TRAINS WILL RETURN TO
THE HUDSON RAIL LINE.
>> STILL I WANT TO CRY, I STILL
DO.
I PROBABLY WILL WHEN I SEE THAT
TRAIN COMING OUT OF THE BUSH.
>> Reporter: ALMOST A YEAR AND
A HALF AGO FLOODING WASHED OUT
SECTIONS OF THE TRACK, CUTTING
OFF THE TOWN OF CHURCHILL AND
OTHER COMMUNITIES ALONG THE WAY.
IT'S REMAINED UNUSABLE UNTIL
NOW.
NOW A PUBLIC/PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP
WHICH INCLUDES FIRST NATIONS HAS
BOUGHT THE RAIL LINE AND THE
PORT.
IT'S NORTH AMERICA'S ONLY RAIL
LINK TO AN ARCTIC PORT AND THERE
ARE PLANS TO EXPORT GOODS,
BUT MOSTLY PEOPLE HERE ARE
LOOKING FORWARD TO A LOWER COST
OF LIVING WITHOUT RELYING ON
EXPENSIVE AIR SHIPMENTS OF FOOD,
FUEL AND SERVICES.
>> I DON'T THINK THAT ANYONE IS
GOING TO TAKE THE TRAIN FOR
GRANTED ANYMORE.
>> Reporter: DAVE DALEY RUNS A
DOG SLEDDING COMPANY.
HE'S READY FOR THE RETURN OF THE
TOURISTS WHO COME TO SEE THE
WHALES AND THE BEARS.
>> THE JOBS WILL COME BACK ONCE
THE PORT IS REOPENED AND PEOPLE
WILL BE WORKING AGAIN.
IT WILL DO HUGE THINGS FOR OUR
COMMUNITY.
>> Reporter: PATRICIA IS
VISITING WINNIPEG FROM
CHURCHILL.
SHE SAYS THAT THE MORALE IN TOWN
IS SOARING ONCE MORE.
>> IT WAS LIKE A FEELING OF
DROWNING AND NOT BEING ABLE TO
COME UP FOR AIR.
NOW THAT THE DEAL WAS SIGNED WE
CAN ALL BREATHE AGAIN.
>> Reporter: REPAIRS TO THE
TRACK START THIS WEEK.
>> I'M SURE THAT WE'RE GOING TO
PARTY IN CHURCHILL SOON.
THIS TIME IT WILL BE THE BIGGEST
PARTY POSSIBLE I THINK.
>> Reporter: BUT FIRST RELIEF
THAT THE WAIT IS OVER.
ERIN BROHMAN, CBC NEWS,
WINNIPEG.
>> Adrienne: NOW CHURCHILL IS
PRETTY FAR NORTH AND PRICES WERE
SKY HIGH BEFORE THE LAND LINK
WAS BROKEN.
SO NOW?
WELL, HOW ABOUT $7 FOR A LOAF OF
BREAD.
$8 FOR A HEAD OF BROCCOLI.
IT'S NOT JUST FOOD.
THIS SUMMER THE PRICE OF GAS HIT
$2.54 A LITRE.
THE TOWN SAYS THAT IS THE
HIGHEST PRICE IN NORTH AMERICA.
SO FILLING UP THIS F-150 WOULD
SET YOU BACK OVER $200.
>>> MOVING SOUTH TO ANOTHER
SMALL COMMUNITY IN THAT
PROVINCE, FOR 20 YEARS MANITOBA
HAS BEEN MATCHING IMMIGRANT
WORKERS WITH JOB OPENINGS IN
RURAL AREAS.
OTHER PROVINCES HAVE SINCE
ADOPTED THIS NOMINEE PROGRAMME.
BUT THEIR WORKERS TEND TO JUST
MOVE ON TO BIGGER PLACES.
WELL, THE BUSTLING CITY OF
MORDEN SEEMS TO HAVE FOUND THE
SECRET TO KEEPING THE WORKERS.
KAREN PAULS WENT TO FIND OUT
HOW.
>> Reporter: MOST OF THESE
SEWING MACHINE OPERATORS ARE
NEWCOMERS, RECRUITED THROUGH
MANITOBA'S PROVINCIAL NOMINEE
PROGRAMME.
>> WE DON'T HAVE ANY TROUBLE
FINDING WORK.
WE HAVE TROUBLE FINDING ENOUGH
PEOPLE.
>> Reporter: SHEILA RAMESH
MOVED FROM INDIA LAST YEAR.
SHE'S ALREADY BEEN PROMOTED TO A
CLOTHING INSPECTOR.
>> THERE ARE SO MUCH
OPPORTUNITIES FOR A CAREER AND
FOR THE KIDS ALSO, THERE ARE
MANY THINGS TO DO HERE.
>> YOU GET A CHANCE TO KIND OF
TRAVEL THE WORLD EVERY DAY...
>> Reporter: AS PART OF THE
PROVINCIAL PROGRAMME, MORDEN HAS
ITS OWN RECRUITMENT INITIATIVE.
SHELLEY VOST HAS BROUGHT IN 50
FAMILIES A YEAR SINCE 2012.
>> IT'S A UNIQUE PROGRAMME AND
WE GET ASKED A LOT ABOUT IT FROM
OTHER COMMUNITIES.
WE GET ASKED A LOT ABOUT IT FROM
ACROSS CANADA.
>> Reporter: BECAUSE OF THIS
EXTRA PUSH MORDEN'S POPULATION
HAS NEARLY DOUBLED IN THE LAST
DECADE.
85% OF THE NEWCOMERS ARE STAYING
IN TOWN, BUCKING A CANADA-WIDE
TREND WHERE MOST PROVINCIAL
NOMINEES SETTLE IN BIG CITIES.
>> THIS IS AN OXYGEN
CONCENTRATOR...
>> Reporter: JIM DUFF OF ON2
SOLUTIONS HOPES VOTH CAN HELP
HIM TO
FIND UP TO 200 WORKERS IN THE
NEXT THREE YEARS.
HE NEEDS ELECTRICIANS AND
PLUMBERS TO BUILD OXYGEN
CONCENTRATORS FOR HOSPITALS AND
DISASTER EQUIPMENT
FOR THE MINING COMPANIES.
DUFF HAS TRIED TO HIRE LOCAL
PEOPLE BUT SAYS THAT HE CAN'T
FIND WHAT HE NEEDS.
>> IT'S MORE THAN JUST THE
SKILLSET.
IT'S THE WORK ETHIC.
THAT'S A HARD THING TO FIND.
SO OUR LAST INTERVIEW PROCESS WE
INTERVIEWED A COUPLE OF BORN AND
RAISED CANADIANS AND THE
DIFFERENCE IN ATTITUDE WAS
SHOCKING.
>> Reporter: MEANWHILE HE'S
THRILLED WITH THE STAFF HE'S
ALREADY HIRED THROUGH THE
PROVINCIAL NOMINEE PROGRAMME.
>> I WOULD VERY HONESTLY SAY IF
WE DIDN'T HAVE THESE FIVE
PEOPLE, WE WOULDN'T BE WHERE WE
ARE NOW, I DON'T EVEN KNOW THAT
WE WOULD NECESSARILY BE IN
BUSINESS.
>> Reporter: TWO OF THEM ARE
THE HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM OF
VICTOR AND EVEY.
HE'S AN ELECTRONICS ENGINEER AND
SHE'S IN CHARGE OF INVENTORY
CONTROL, PURCHASING
AND SHIPPING/RECEIVING.
THEY MOVED TO MORDEN FROM
UKRAINE THREE YEARS AGO AND THEY
FEEL SAFE HERE.
>> I WAS IN MAYBE IN A REALLY
SMALL TOWN IN MANITOBA, BECAUSE
OF MY WORK, BUT MORDEN IS SO
SPECIAL.
>> Reporter: AND NOW IT'S ALSO

BOOST OF WOMEN IN THE SHOW THAN
THE GUYS.
IT'S REALLY AMAZING TO SEE THEM
COMPLETELY HAVE FUN WITH THE
ENVIRONMENT.
(*)
>> Adrienne: THEIR
RESIGNATIONS WERE PUBLIC AND THE
BACKLASH SWIFT BUT CAN THE MAN
DISGRACED IN THE "ME TOO"
MOVEMENT RETURN TO THE
SPOTLIGHT?
WELL, THIS WEEK WE SAW SOME OF
THE FIRST STEPS TOWARDS
COMEBACKS.
COMEDIAN LOUIS C.K. RETURNED TO
THE STAGE FOR THE FIRST TIME
SINCE HE WAS ACCUSED OF
MASTURBATING IN FRONT OF FEMALE
COLLEAGUES.
PAGE SIX REPORTED THAT FIRED
"TODAY SHOW" HOST MATT LAUER
TOLD FANS THAT I HAVE BEEN BUSY
BEING A DAD, BUT DON'T WORRY,
I'LL BE BACK ON TV.
AND FOR SOME TIME IT'S RUMOURED
THAT THE FORMER CBS HOST FOR
"THIS MORNING" CHARLIE ROSE IS
LOOKING TO HOST A NEW SHOW WHERE
HE INTERVIEWS MEN BROUGHT DOWN
BY THE MOVEMENT.
SO GIVEN ALL THAT'S HAPPENING,
TONIGHT LET'S REVISIT ROSIE'S
INTERVIEW WITH EMILY STEEL
WHOSE REPORTING HELPED TO EXPOSE
THE MISCONDUCT OF POWERFUL MEN
IN AMERICAN MEDIA.
(*)
>> Rosemary: EMILY STEEL IS A
"THE NEW YORK TIMES" REPORTER.
LAST APRIL SHE AND HER COLLEAGUE
MICHAEL SCHMIDT DROPPED A
BOMBSHELL ABOUT THE THEN FOX
NEWS HOST BILL O'REILLY.
>> HI, I'M BILL O'REILLY.
THANK YOU FOR WATCHING US
TONIGHT.
>> Rosemary: REVEALING PAYOUTS
OF MORE THAN $45 MILLION TO
MULTIPLE WOMEN OVER SEXUAL
HARASSMENT ALLEGATIONS.
O'REILLY DENIED THE ALLEGATIONS
BUT FOX NEWS DROPPED THE
CONSERVATIVE COMMENTARY FROM HIS
JUGGERNAUT SHOW.
>> YOU DON'T LIKE WHAT IS
HAPPENING IN THE WORKPLACE, GO
TO HUMAN RESOURCES OR LEAVE.
>> Rosemary: IN DECEMBER STEEL
REPORTED
ON A TOXIC WORK CULTURE AT VICE
MEDIA.
TWO TOP EXECUTIVES WERE
SUSPENDED.
EXPL JUST LAST WEEK STEEL WAS
PART OF
A TEAM FROM "THE NEW YORK TIMES"
AWARDED THE PULITZER PRIZE FOR
PUBLIC SERVICE.
I MET UP WITH EMILY STEEL AT THE
NATIONAL ARTS CENTRE IN OTTAWA
ON WEDNESDAY.
SHE WAS IN CANADA TO TALK ABOUT
HER REPORTING AND HOW IT HELPED
TO TRIGGER THE "ME TOO"
MOVEMENT.
YOU KNOW, I'M TRYING TO THINK
ABOUT WHAT I WOULD FEEL LIKE AS
A 33-YEAR-OLD WHO HAS WON THE
PULITZER.
>> ACTUALLY I'M 34.
>> Rosemary: 34.
34.
>> YOU KNOW, IT'S ONE OF THOSE
THINGS THAT AS SOON AS I FOUND
OUT I COULDN'T SLEEP FOR A
NUMBER OF DAYS.
SINCE I WAS A VERY LITTLE GIRL I
ALWAYS DREAMED OF BECOMING A
JOURNALIST.
AND I'VE ALWAYS REALLY THOUGHT
ABOUT THESE LOFTY IDEAS OF
JOURNALISM, OF SHINING A LIGHT
IN DARK PLACING AND HOLDING
PEOPLE IN THESE
POSITIONS OF POWER ACCOUNTABLE
AND TELLING THESE STORIES THAT
REALLY HELPED TO CHANGE THE
PERSPECTIVE OF HOW PEOPLE THINK
ABOUT THE WORLD.
AND IT'S REALLY JUST BEEN A
DREAM COME TRUE THAT I'VE BEEN
ABLE TO DO THAT WORK.
AND THEN TO RECEIVE THE PULITZER
IS REALLY JUST -- IT WAS REALLY
SPECIAL.
>> Rosemary: INCREDIBLE, AN
INCREDIBLE MOMENT.
SO CONGRATULATIONS.
>> THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
THANK YOU.
>> Rosemary: LET'S TALK ABOUT
SOME OF THE REPORTING THEN AND
SORT OF THE IMPACT AND HOW IT
STARTED.
THAT'S WHAT I WOULD -- AS A
REPORTER I HAVE A LOT OF
QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW YOU GET
THESE STORIES.
I THINK THAT'S WHAT
PEOPLE WANT TO UNDERSTAND TOO.
HOW DID IT FIRST START TO
GERMINATE?
WHAT WAS FIRST THING ON THE BILL
O'REILLY STORY WHERE YOU WERE
LIKE, HMM, WE SHOULD LOOK INTO
THIS?
HOW DID THAT START?
>> THE KIND OF THE SEEDS OF THIS
STORY
REALLY BEGAN WAY BACK IN
JULY 2016.
AND THAT'S WHEN GRETCHEN
CARLSON, THE FORMER FOX NEWS
ANCHOR, SUED ROGER ALES THE HEAD
OF FOX NEWS FOR SEXUAL
HAR ASMENT.
THAT STORY REALLY BURST INTO THE
PUBLIC VIEW, THE SEXUAL
HARASSMENT SCANDAL AT FOX NEWS.
AND AS A
MEDIA REPORTER WE WERE JUST
REALLY CHASING THAT STORY.
AND JUST TRYING TO KEEP UP WITH
THIS REALLY WILD AND CRAZY
COMPETITION OF FIGURING OUT WAS
THIS AN ISSUE JUST AT THE TOP OF
THE COMPANY OR WAS THIS
SOMETHING THAT WAS REALLY
PERVASIVE THROUGHOUT THAT ENTIRE
ORGINISATION.
SO WE KEPT CALLING AND CALLING
AND CALLING AND WE STARTED TO
SEE THAT THERE'S A BIGGER STORY
HERE.
THAT THERE'S A BIGGER PROBLEM.
>> Rosemary: SO YOU WERE
CALLING ALL OF THESE DIFFERENT
PEOPLE BUT YOU WERE ALSO CALLING
THEM ABOUT A SENSITIVE TOPIC.
>> UM-HMM.
>> Rosemary: A TOPIC WHERE
MAYBE THEY HAD SIGNED AN
AGREEMENT TO NOT DISCUSS IT.
SO HOW DID YOU GET PEOPLE TO
START TELLING YOU THESE STORIES?
>> IT WAS HARD.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I KEEP
THINKING ABOUT NOW IS THAT WE
WERE DOING A LOT OF THIS
REPORTING A FULL YEAR BEFORE
THE "ME TOO" MOVEMENT REALLY
TOOK OFF.
SO THIS WAS A TIME WHEN MANY
WOMEN SAID THEY HAD EXPERIENCED
THIS ACTIVITY OR THIS HARASSMENT
OR ABUSE, BUT THEY REALLY FEARED
COMING FORWARD WITH THESE
STORIES.
>> Rosemary: IT WAS A
DIFFERENT CULTURE?
>> IT WASN'T THAT LONG AGO BUT
IT WAS AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT
TIME.
PEOPLE FEARED THEY WOULDN'T BE
BELIEVED.
THEY FEARED THEY'D PUT THEIR
CAREERS INTO JEOPARDY.
THEY FEARED THAT THEY WOULD
BECOME TARGETS BECAUSE THEY WERE
SPEAKING OUT AGAINST THIS ABUSE.
SO THAT WAS A HUGE BARRIER AND A
HUGE HURDLE THAT WE FACED.
THE OTHER HUGE AND SIGNIFICANT
BARRIER THAT WE FACED WERE THESE
VERY IRON-CLAD CONFIDENTIALITY
AGREEMENTS.
SO WHAT WE DID IS SOME REALLY
KIND OF OLD-SCHOOL BOOTS ON THE
GROUND REPORTING.
AND WE CALLED AS MANY PEOPLE AS
POSSIBLE.
WE CALLED AS MANY PEOPLE CLOSE
TO THESE WOMEN, MANY LAWYERS AND
PEOPLE WHO WERE AT THE COMPANY,
PEOPLE WHO HAD LEFT THE COMPANY,
PEOPLE IN O'REILLY'S WORLD, TO
JUST TRY TO PIECE TOGETHER WHAT
THIS STORY WAS.
>> Rosemary: AND YOU REALISED
AT WHAT POINT THAT IT WAS A
PATTERN, THAT HIS BEHAVIOUR WAS
A PATTERN, AND THE COMPANY'S
RESOLUTION WAS A PATTERN?
>> ONE OF THE INTERESTING THINGS
THAT WE DID IS WE WENT BACK --
WHILE WE'RE DOING THIS REPORTING
ONE OF OUR SOURCES SAID IT'S
JUST LIKE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH,
IT'S JUST LIKE THE CATHOLIC
ABUSE SCANDAL IN THE CATHOLIC
CHURCH.
SO WE THOUGHT LET'S GO AND LOOK
AT THE STORIES THAT THE "BOSTON
GLOBE" HAD COVERED BACK IN
ABOUT THE SEX ABUSE SCANDAL
WITHIN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.
WE PULLED UP ALL OF THOSE
STORIES AND WE ACTUALLY WATCHED
THE MOVIE, BECAUSE IT WAS GREAT
TO SEE HOW DID THEY DO THIS
REPORTING AND WHAT WAS THE
STRATEGY BEHIND THAT REPORTING,
WHAT SORT OF LINES DID THEY USE
TO TRY TO GET PEOPLE TO TALK TO
THEM.
>> HI.
>> HI.
>> I AM FROM THE "BOSTON GLOBE."
>> Rosemary: DID YOU HAVE A
2002 CONVERSATION THOUGH AT ANY
POINT DURING THE
REPORTING ABOUT WHAT THIS WOULD
MEAN OR ARE YOU TOO DEEP IN IT
AT THAT POINT TO UNDERSTAND?
>> IT WAS SUCH INTENSE REPORTING
AND WE WERE SO FOCUSED ON
FOLLOWING THE FACTS AND MAKING
SURE THAT THIS IS A FAIR AND AN
ACCURATE STORY THAT WHEN -- WHEN
THE STORY PUBLISHED IN APRIL OF
LAST YEAR IT PUBLISHED AND THEN
IT JUST LIKE EXPLODED.
IT SET OFF THIS FIRESTORM.
AND IT'S WILD TO THINK ABOUT BUT
IT WAS RIGHT AFTER THE STORY
PUBLISHED THAT THERE WERE
PROTESTS OUTSIDE OF FOX NEWS.
ADVERTISERS BOYCOTTED BILL
O'REILLY'S SHOW.
AND YOU REALLY CAN'T
UNDERESTIMATE HOW POWERFUL HE
WAS IN AMERICAN MEDIA.
PEOPLE CALLED HIM THE "KING OF
CABLE NEWS."
AND THE SHOW WAS THE TOP-RATED
ON ALL OF CABLE NEWS FOR 15
YEARS.
SO HERE'S THIS VERY POWERFUL
MAN.
SO IT WAS THIS KIND OF MOMENT
WHEN PEOPLE STOOD BACK AND SAID,
WAIT, THIS ISN'T JUST FOX NEWS,
THIS IS A HUGE ISSUE THAT OUR
SOCIETY HASN'T CONFRONTED, THAT
WE HAVEN'T TALKED ABOUT.
AND IT WAS AT THAT POINT THAT
EDITORS AT "THE TIMES" DECIDED
LET'S CONTINUE TO DIG.
WHO ARE OTHER POWERFUL MEN THAT
MAY HAVE HAD THESE HIDDEN
STORIES.
SO THAT'S WHEN MY COLLEAGUE
STARTED TO WRITE ABOUT ISSUES IN
SILICON VALLEY, IN HOLLYWOOD,
AND AT THE AUTO PLANT AT FORD
AND THE STORIES JUST KEPT ON
COMING AND COMING.
>> Rosemary: THAT MOMENT WHEN
YOU DID FINALLY GO AND MEET HIM.
>> YEAH.
>> Rosemary: HAD HE LOST HIS
JOB AT THAT POINT?
THE TIMING IS HARD FOR ME TO
FOLLOW.
YOU KNOW IT SO WELL AND I DON'T
KNOW.
BUT HE FINALLY AGREED TO TALK TO
YOU ON THE RECORD.
>> RIGHT.
>> Rosemary: WHAT WAS THAT
LIKE?
>> I WAS NERVOUS.
AND WE SAT DOWN FOR AN INTERVIEW
AND IT WAS KIND OF A VERY TERSE
AND TENSE 40 MINUTES.
BUT IT WAS ALSO VERY IMPORTANT
BECAUSE IT WAS ALL ON THE RECORD
AND WE WERE GIVING HIM THE
CHANCE TO RESPOND TO ALL OF OUR
REPORTING.
>> Rosemary: THAT'S WHAT
BALANCED AND FAIR REPORTING IS.
>> EXACTLY.
>> Rosemary: BUT AT THE END HE
SORT OF LOSES IT A LITTLE BIT?
>> THERE WAS A POINT AT THE END
OF THE REPORTING WHERE WE WERE
PUTTING OUR FOLDERS AND OUR
PAPERS INTO THE BAG AND KIND OF
READY TO CALL AN END TO THE
INTERVIEW, AND O'REILLY KIND OF
STANDS UP AT THE END AND HE PUTS
HIS HANDS ON THE TABLE.
AND OUR RECORDERS ARE STILL
RUNNING AND SO YOU CAN HEAR THIS
ON "THE DAILY."
AND HE YELLS AT US...
>> THIS IS HORRIBLE.
IT'S HORRIBLE WHAT I WENT
THROUGH.
HORRIBLE WHAT MY FAMILY WENT
THROUGH.
THIS IS CRAP AND YOU KNOW IT.
IT'S POLITICALLY AND FINANCIALLY
MOTIVATED.
AND WE CAN PROVE IT WITH -- WITH
SHOCKING INFORMATION.
BUT I'M NOT GOING TO SIT THERE
IN A COURTROOM FOR A YEAR AND A
HALF AND LET MY KIDS GET BEATEN
UP EVERY SINGLE DAY OF THEIR
LIVES BY A TABLOID PRESS WHO
WOULD SIT THERE, AND YOU KNOW
IT.
>> Rosemary: AND THEN YOU JUST
LEFT?
>> YEAH.
SO THEN WE KIND OF SHOOK THE
LAWYERS' HANDS AND HE DIDN'T
SHAKE OUR HANDS AT THE END AND
HE WALKED TO THE WINDOW AND JUST
STOOD LOOKING OUT THE WINDOW.
AND THEN MIKE AND I GOT ON THE
ELEVATOR AND WE WERE A LITTLE
RATTLED.
WE WENT BACK AND TOLD OUR
EDITORS WHAT HAPPENED AND WE GOT
THE STORY INTO THE PAPER.
>> Rosemary: HOW DO YOU FEEL
NOW THAT THAT PART OF THE
REPORTING IS OVER?
BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, HIS CAREER IS
DONE.
HE'S DONE.
THESE WOMEN HAVE BEEN GIVEN A
VOICE.
THE TRUTH HAS BEEN EXPOSED.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT ALL OF
THAT NOW, NOW THAT YOU'VE HAD
TIME TO SIT BACK?
>> I MEAN, I THINK THAT IT'S
REALLY POWERFUL TO SEE THE POWER
OF JOURNALISM.
I THINK THAT THIS HAS BEEN AN
EXTRAORDINARY YEAR FOR REPORTING
AND FOR FOLLOWING THE FACTS.
I THINK THAT WHAT WE HAVE SEEN
IS THAT THE TRUTH DOES HAVE A
VOICE, THAT IT'S IMPORTANT TO
HOLD PEOPLE IN POSITIONS OF
POWER TO ACCOUNT.
IT'S IMPORTANT TO LOOK AT THE
SYSTEMS THAT HAVE ENABLED THAT
POWER STRUCTURE TO CONTINUE.
AND IT'S ALSO REALLY IMPORTANT
TO GIVE A VOICE TO PEOPLE WHO
HAVE BEEN SILENCED.
AND I THINK THAT THAT'S JUST
REALLY INCREDIBLE.
AND I JUST FEEL REALLY GRATEFUL
TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO THAT
WORK.
>> Rosemary: YEAH.
WELL, CONGRATULATIONS.
YOU MUST BE VERY PROUD.
>> I AM.
THANK YOU.
IT'S SO NICE TO MEET YOU.
>> Rosemary: NICE TO MEET YOU.
>> Adrienne: GOOD
CONVERSATION.
WHEN YOU THINK OF SUPER HEROES,
BATMAN AND IRONMAN, SPIDER-MAN,
LOTS OF SPIDER-MAN AND LOTS OF
MEN ON THAT LIST, BUT AT THIS
YEAR'S FAN EXPO A GATHERING OF
FANTASY FANS OF ALL STRIPES FROM
GAMERS TO COMIC BOOK COLLECTORS,
THERE IS NO QUESTION WOMEN ARE
HAVING A REAL MOMENT.
"WONDER WOMAN" WAS THE BIGGEST
BLOCKBUSTER FROM THE FEMALE
DIRECTOR.
"BLACK PANTHER" WAS PRAISED FOR
A MULTITUDE OF STRONG FEMINIST
CHARACTERS.
AND THIS SUMMER EVANGELINE LILLY
WAS THE FIRST WOMAN TO HAVE
EQUAL BILLING ON A MARVEL MOVIE.
SO IF THIS YEAR'S FAN EXPO TELLS
US ANYTHING, IT'S THAT THESE
FILMS ARE PAYING OFF, NOT JUST
AT THE BOX OFFICE.
>> THERE'S BEEN A LOT MORE
FEMALE REPRESENTATION IN COMIC
BOOKS AND IN MEDIA IN GENERAL.
IT JUST FEELS NICE, YOU KNOW, TO
KNOW THAT GIRLS CAN DO IT TOO.
>> Adrienne: AND IT'S NOT JUST
THAT THERE ARE MORE WOMEN, IT'S
HOW THEY'RE BEING PORTRAYED.
TAKE HARLEY QUINN IN D.C.
COMICS.
>> YOU'RE SEEING THAT SORT OF
RE-ROLE OF HER, EVEN IN THE
COMIC BOOK SHE'S GOT A LOUDER
VOICE, YOU KNOW, EVEN SOME OF
HER STORYLINE SHE'S BREAKING
AWAY FROM BEING A VICTIM.
AND SHE'S REALLY COMING OUT OF
HER OWN SHELL AND SO THAT'S
GREAT.
>> Adrienne: THERE'S ROOM FOR
IMPROVEMENT.
OF THE 61 CELEBRITY GUESTS, ONLY
19 ARE WOMEN AND ALMOST ALL OF
THEM ARE WHITE.
STILL, THIS FAN SAYS THAT FEMALE
EMPOWERMENT ON SCREEN TRANSLATES
OFF-SCREEN TOO.
>> I HAVE BEEN COMING TO THIS
SHOW FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS NOW
AND THERE HAS CERTAINLY BEEN A
BOOST OF WOMEN IN THIS SHOW THAN
THE GUYS.

THEM JUST COMPLETELY HAVE FUN

BUT WE PLAY IT WITH THIS AND THE
BALL IS SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
AND WE HAVE TO GIVE THE BALL
FROM ONE TO THE OTHER ONE.

THAT'S IT.

REPUTATION OF BEING ASSERTIVE.
THEY TAKE THEIR SPORTS SERIOUSLY

IT COMES TO BASKETBALL AND

BUT AT THE BEACH WHEN THE
MATKOT PADDLES ARE OUT IT'S MUCH
MORE CHILL.

SO THAT'S PRETTY MUCH SUMS IT

IT'S JUST FOR FUN.

Make a "Strip Trees" Quilt with Rob! - Duration: 20:49.While spending some time in the great outdoors I was inspired to try to come up with a quilt
that would be a patchwork instead of an applique but a fun nature scene. And of course I've
been playing with some of Elizabeth Hartman's fantastic patterns. And I learned a great
seam allowance trick I'm going to show you today. Let's get started.
That's right. I simply used some fantastic pre cut 2 ½ inch strips. Now these are from
Island Batik. This is the Blue Moon pack. And I used one and some of my second one.
So when you're getting your supplies, and we have a link in the description below if
you need, make sure you get two of these packets. And then get yourself a yard of a complimentary
green. This one is obviously also from Island Batik. And I just love the texture in it.
But I took my yard and I also pre cut it down to 2 ½ inch wide strips because the entire
construction of this awesome quilt behind me, check it out, is all made from 2 ½ inch
strips. And it's basically all vertical seam allowances. But I'm going to teach
you also how to make these branches for our trees and a couple of the other fun things
for the details of your mountains and your sky to come together. So let's just dive
right in today. Also in that link below I've got a fantastic printable. And as you're
looking at the printable I want to point out a couple of things real quick because we're
just going to work on this one seam at a time together today. First of all you see these
numbers in the printable, those numbers are the length of the strip cut. Do not, you do
not need to add a half an inch. I've figured out the math. So where this says 18 you're
going to cut an 18 inch wide strip there. I'm sorry, 18 long, not wide. Then the other
thing I want to point out is the sections of the tree branches are labeled A, B, B again
because it's the same thing, C and D. And the information you're going to need is
written down the sides there. And I'm going to show you a fun fabric saving trick on that
cutting and set up. So let's dive right into this.
So what I want to do is I want to first build my vertical pieces that I need. And so one
of the ones we're going to be needing pretty soon is one of these sky, mountain and kind
of water combos that I'm going to need. And you're thinking well what do you mean
by that? Well I should have pointed out that I took that strip set apart. And I really
saw it as three color families. I saw a wonderful purple color family, the dark dark blues and
then the light blues there. So this is my sky, my water, and then the purples are for
my mountains. And there was actually even one or two in the packet that I didn't use
because the colors just didn't feel right. And that's the fun of being creative with
pre cuts. I've grabbed a few of the pieces for my scraps but I haven't cut them down
yet so what I was starting to say, let's build this one right here. I need a seven
inch piece of sky. And I want you to be as accurate as possible when you're doing these.
So I'm going to go ahead and take this here. And I'm looking down, let's see, 20 oh
I"m going the wrong way. This always drives my brain crazy. So let me slide over here
where I'm at ten. And I can go to 17. And I look at that line there. And I'm just
cutting a seven inch piece of sky, ok? And then I need the mountain piece. And that piece
is going to be 18 inches. Ok so 12 down to my 30 mark should be 18. And of course you
could just do kind of a rough little cut there. And then the last piece on my blue that I
want will be six inches. And my six inch cut there, 12 to 18 I can do quick math on the
set in front of all these cameras and lights still. It feels pretty good. My high schoolers
will be proud of me today.
Ok so now what happens though is we're going to join our seams whenever we're seeing
some sort of a fun angle come together like the sky where it hits the mountain those are
just going to be five degree seams. And I just look at the picture and I build it just
as I'm going. And I'm using batiks so there's no real wrong side. But I'm setting
this what I would consider right sides up. And then this piece here is going to come
in here. And I want my angle to come across down at this way. So if I lay these here and
I sew this here and I fold it up. And I literally do that. I just practice each piece. And I
make sure that my angle is running like it is in the photograph. And then all I'm doing
is the same exact trick we've been teaching you for years when we're putting our bindings
together. This is just a mitered seam. So I'm going to sew, here let me slow down
a little bit. I'm going to sew effectively from this corner all the way through this
corner. But I'm going to line those square pieces up nice. And that's doing all the
math for us. Isn't that great?
Ok so here we go. I'm going to come over here. I'm just going to stitch through.
Make sure I've got all my equipment ready. Hey I'm back. Don't worry about me. Now
I"m really back. So this goes ahead. It sews on through. And then of course I'm
going to test it before I cut it. I'm going to lay it back on the picture. And I'm going
to make sure that my line is running just like it is in the picture there. At that point
I know it is awesome. And I can come in and I can go ahead and just trim this with roughly
a quarter inch seam allowance in there. Then I want to go ahead and come to my ironing
station. And I am spending the time to try to press to the dark side. So I'm holding
the dark fabric in the air and then I'm just going to iron that smooth through there
like that. Now let's look at the quilt for a second here. The strip I'm starting to
pre assemble I believe is this one right in here. So what I wanted to show you is this
is that seam for the sky and the mountain. And as we come down here so this is a 45 degree,
and as we come down here this is just going to be a straight seam. So where the mountains
meet the water or this could be kind of an assumed horizon line. Those are always just
straight seams. So for that I had already cut down the blue fabric to the correct size.
I'm just going to lay these on here. And then I"m going to come over and I'm going
to do a quarter inch seam this way. Straight across. But I want to make sure I have my
right sides together. Checking it, right sides, right sides. I'll go ahead and press this.
And I'm going to technically set it aside because I am now going to start working on
the diagonal sections of fabric that form all of the tree branches. And I think I promised
you I would show you a really cool trick on how to make those work.
So right now I'm ready for the design wall parts over here but both B sides are the same
so I already have a B side built I'll bring into camera in a minute so you can see how
that works. This one we're working with right now and I'm going to follow the information
over here. It says cut our strips, the blue and the green at 16 inches wide. But then
I'm going to trim them down to 8 ½. I'm going to show you that when it's all done.
So in order to make these work I'm going to take my stack of greens. And I've just
counted one, two, three, four, five, so I have five in this stack here. And then what
I, again looking at the picture, I now want to pre trim a 45 degree angle onto the edge.
So what I like to do is I like to take and I like to put them like they're going to
be in the picture. And then I use my little five by 15 ruler here. And I"m going to
set this up. So if I set this here I'm cutting a straight line up and down. So this is the
wrong direction right now. So when I bring this around it's going to cut right through
there and I want to cut right through those tips. Now I should always try to cut right
handed or with my dominant hand but this is set up right now for this so I'm putting
the cutter in my left hand. Slowly and carefully making sure I have all five of those layers
of fabric cut. I'm going to do the exact same to the blue. So once I figured out one
I didn't flip the ruler over. I"m just sliding it down. I'm going to line up my
45 degree line again. Oops, I said I wasn't going to change. Sliding it up to the corner.
And this is our huge fabric saving trick. This will save you literally yards of cloth
in this project. Ok, we won't need these triangles so I'm going to set them over
here.
Now what I'm going to do following the diagram and not every one of these, I created the
branches differently to make some character in the trees. So not always do they start
with a blue piece or a green piece at the top. So right here I'm starting with green
up here and the angle is coming down. And the next piece I'm going to insert will
be one of my blue pieces. And I'm going to set it so that they start up sewing just
like this. So when I fold this over to go to the sewing machine I literally have about
a quarter of an inch of the blue fabric hiding from underneath the green. And at this point
I'm going to recommend you take your edge guide and roll it back into position for your
quarter of an inch because we're going to do a lot of these seams at once. There we
go. And I want them to be as accurate as possible. And let's go ahead and backstitch. It's
always a good habit to have on this kind of work. And backstitching at the end. Oh my
goodness, who left his mess all over here on the cutting board. That would be me again,
or the ironing board. We do want to press after every seam. And I'm just pressing
away from where I was working and so I was looking at the green, now I'm at the blue,
pressing this open like this. But this is really cool because what I'm after is some
sort of accuracy along this line. I've given you enough fabric that you can trim both sides.
But I'm really, really happy right now with the way that turned out. Green, blue, next
one is going to be a green. So I'm going to grab this. I'm going to set it to make
sure that my lines are running correctly. When I fold over for my seam allowance there's
that quarter of an inch sneaking out from underneath here. And I head to the machine
and I do it all again until I've made the entire section that I need. And then I'm
going to trim it on down. But I do have lots I want to show you and I already have a piece
trimmed down on the design wall. So I tell you what, why don't we all go to the design
wall together and talk about where you're going to see these elements coming together
and I'll grab what we need. Ok.
So as we're over here now, I want you to see that I have been playing, and I have been
building and I just started on the edge of the paper and I made each strip as you see.
But the sections have to stop when I go to introduce my new diagonal or my branch sections.
So this was the one strip with the sky and all the way into the tree trunk. But this
was still just 45 seams. Here was a branch section that I had already stitched into two
strips have formed the rest of the background. This is the strip that I just made with you
over there a moment ago. We're going to first need to put these four strips together
so that they're the same width as this diagonal. So I"m going to actually let's do those
first and then we'll come back and put all of this in. And that's when we'll talk
about the trimming. So I'm going to make sure that these come off the wall in order
so that I can sew them together. And if you're not sure just lay them back on your table
while you're working. And the thing I need to do here, let's point this out, it may
be even easier for you to see like this. I'm watching the line of the
mountains come together. But this is going to stair step this way so that next piece
fits in here on the angle. So while I'm sewing these together I'm making sure I'm
lining up my top pieces very nicely. So I'm going to fold this over. I want to make sure
I keep my eye on my next piece as I insert. And I still have that quarter inch seam allowance.
Now as I begin sewing my fingers are now tending to the join between the purple and the blue
on both strips. And I'm just making sure those come together. And then the next piece
I'm going to be feeling for is way down here where the two blue pieces are meeting
the two purple pieces. Now I'm just hanging onto these. Well that didn't sound very
good. I forgot to put my thread stand back up when I went to the design wall. So I"m
going to re-thread and be right back.
Well that was actually more timely than I expected because while I re-threaded the machine
I actually bounced ahead forward. And I put all of these seams together also because it
was the next thing we really needed to do. So I want to point out again what we've
done is we've sewn across the top and that is going to create the stagger or the stair
step across the bottom. Now what I'm going to quickly do is I'm going to run over to
the design wall and I'm going to grab that section of tree branches that fits in here
and the other bottom section too. So we just need this one here and I also have this one
built. So while I bring it back into place I'm just double checking in my diagram over
there that this is going to go ahead and sew right through here. I don't want you to
cut these and trim these first. I want to sew this line in place and that's going
to help us remain more accurate. And before I can show you that step though I want to
talk about how this was trimmed down.
So let's go back to these strips we were building. These ones we were building just
for the other side. And you can see that they're considerably wider. What I did is I took my
ruler. I made sure that I had the 45 degree mark on my one side. And I first trimmed down
the side here nice and clean. And then I used a larger ruler an 8 ½ inch wide which I happened
to have. And I cut the other side 8 ½ inches wide which will run perfectly parallel . And
that happens to fit in perfectly with our four strips that we just put together from
the other elements of the background. So even though you've done a beautiful job sewing
this, trim this first and then go across and use your 8 ½ or whichever other sizes we've
listed here in those A, B, C, diagrams on your branches. I'm hoping that makes some
fantastic sense.
Now this is going to be an easy one to build but again it's like our 45, it is a 45 so
when it's sewing together it's going through here. And I want you to kind of see what I'm
seeing, what I'm looking at while I'm doing this. I like to pull this down to this
bottom corner. This is that flat if you were using regular half square triangles we would
have that little edge overlapping over there as well. And then I'm going to run a quarter
inch seam allowance as I go through here. This wouldn't be a terrible place if you
wanted to put a couple of pins to make sure that it all stays secure. And before I even
try to bring that over I'm going to slide my edge guide back up and out of the way so
that we come through here. And my goal is to come out of a quarter inch seam allowance
right on that corner that's hidden down under here that looks like this. So I have
a cheat up here. I"m looking at this across here making sure it stays crisp. And now I'm
heading over to the machine. I'm just going to sew nice and slow. Keeping my eye on the
edge of the presser foot on the edge of the fabric. And I haven't let go of this bottom
corner. Making sure that everything is looking good there. And then I should be coming out
right about the corner of the blue strip of fabric. As we do as I fold this open you can
see that that marries them in nicely. Now I can press this down to lay it a little bit
flat. I accidentally when I was telling you I wasn't holding it, I ended up letting
go. So I think what I would like to do later is come in and just open those few inches.
If you have any of those little puckers, just take those few inches back and finish that
sewing. But have it set up to show you this all over again so let's do that instead.
So at any rate here's the bottom angle. And a reminder what you're looking at here,
these are four strips that were put together but there were from the bottom elements. Those
are these bottom elements down here. So when I was putting those together because I wanted
the stair step to come upward, I started by sewing along the bottom seam. All of these
were sewn up to create the stair step. And this is going to go in here like this just
the same. And maybe I should even take a second and let's press this. It's been in the
suitcase a while. Make sure everything is nice and flat. Because once this element is
done we're just about ready to go to start building it out. So we're going to take
this. I'm going to fold it over so we can see where we were going. You can go either
direction whatever is easiest. I like to be looking at the long angle, the straight line
as it goes over. So I"m going to slide this back down looking at this corner first. Giving
myself that quarter of an inch that pops out down there. Lining this up across my stair
steps. There we go and heading to the machine again. So I come out on that side there. Oh
ya that one came out all but perfect, fantastic. And I can even tell by looking at how nice
that has been managed.
So then the next thing I want to do before I even go back to putting it on the design
wall or even the ironing board is I'm going to come in here and I'm just using my ruler
to protect my hands. So I'm going to go ahead and trim that like that. Get those little
pieces out of there. I would have done the same with the top but like I said I'll fix
that later on my own time. Let's go back over to the design wall to show you how this
is going to fit in though. This is really cool. So now this element itself because the
diagonal has already been inserted then I can go ahead now and I can put these pieces
together. Even though you'll be wise to build out your whole entire quilt. And then
put all of your long rows together but this is how it works. Once your diagonals are set
then this piece is a unit and you can put it right back into the quilt as you go.
Now looking at the quilt itself for the free motion machine quilting this is really really
fun. And I did it as free motion style but a lot of it is straight line technique. I
started at about the center of the quilt. And one of the first things I did is I went
and just went around the sewing you see here of the tree from the center all the way around.
My goal was to give some lift into the trees to make them stand out of the quilt a little
bit more. So the only quilting they get is just around the outside edges. Once those
were done then I loaded a blue thread in and I began right up here with kind of my horizon.
And I began stitching in these fun swirls. I want this to feel like water so as there's
some side to side lateral motion there. And then some swirls to kind of pick up that water
feel. And I was able to travel back around even into fill in the spaces between the tree
branches. But when you're filling in those spaces make sure you're still just going
side to side not up and down because you're giving the ripples in the water effect. Once
all of this was done then I went back to the horizon and I started to cut around the mountains
and I basically cut straight lines up and around the mountains. And then periodically
went back in and cut some more diagonal lines just to look like valleys and you know little
areas where the runoff would be in our mountains. And finally finishing the free motion quilting
up in the blue starting down in one of the valleys but I started putting in what I think
is some fun like wind swirl style technique, some real fun and whimsical free motion for
the sky because we all know that the elements of the quilting just help finish off telling
the stories we are trying to portray in our fantastic quilts. So very basic steps to make
an incredible quilt when you're done. And what I really hope you learned from me today
was how maybe you could take some of your own graph paper, play with some simple 45
degree and straight 90 degree lines and you could create your own fantastic pieced scenic
quilts like we've done here today. So thanks again for following along. We really appreciate

RODE VideoMicro Review (Unboxing, Features, Accessories and Comparison) - Duration: 3:36.So, here is the Rode VideoMicro,
a compact microphone which is designed to improve the audio quality of your videos. This thing costs around $60
which is reasonable in my opinion. On the right side of the box,
it tells you what you are getting. So, you will get two years of warranty
but you have to register online on the official Road website with the given serial number.
It doesn't require any battery since it pulls the power directly from what it is plugged into.
Obviously, it's compact because it is made out of aluminum giving it a high level of RF rejection.
It also comes with a Rycote Lyre Suspension Mount which minimizes the unwanted vibration when you're moving. Now,
let's just open the box.
I have taken off the void seal since I have received this more than two weeks ago. With other Rode microphones,
you will get a foam cover. But in this package, you will get a WS9 Deluxe Furry Windshield with form inner cell.
Which means, this one also has the foam cover which is built-in.
You can feel the foam cover if you put your finger inside of it.
The shield is designed for outdoor scenarios where wind and environmental noise can inhibit recordings.
This will cost around 25 bucks if you wanna buy it individually. And
here is the directional microphone. The Rode VideoMicro reduces distracting sounds and focuses on the audio in front of the microphone.
Which means it almost doesn't pick audio from behind or from the sides.
It looks quite nice actually. Because it is finished in Rode's high-grade ceramic anti-glare black coating.
It also feels really nice and it has a good weight to it. And here is the shock absorbing mount.
It has a cold shoe mount on the bottom. This thing will cost around 10 bucks
if you want to buy it separately it also comes with a removable
TRS to TRS patch cable. With this cable you can use it on a camera.
But you do need to buy a rode SC7 TRS
to TRRS patch cable, if you wanna use the mic on a phone. Since,
TRRS is commonly used for stereo headsets, such as a cell phone. Each cable will cost around 15 bucks.
But if you want to buy the microphone to use it only on a mobile,
then I would recommend the Rode VideoMic ME. And here is the User Manual. You really need to take a look at this. Now,
let's see how it performs. This is how the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 built-in microphone sounds like.
This is how the Xiaomi Basic Earphone sounds like. And this is how the Rode VideoMicro sounds like. I
have used to the Xiaomi Basic microphone to make these videos and
Samsung Galaxy Tab A's internal microphone to make these videos and now, I'm using the Rode
VideoMicro to make the video you're currently watching. When I make voiceover videos like this,
I always use Audacity to remove background noises and then I use the Levelator to raise the levels of the quiet without
raising the levels of the highs. Which brings me in front of a question. Can you use it on a computer?
Maybe..... The other two microphones pick background noises as well as all sorts of electrical noises. See if you can hear.
And now, for the last test let's just go outside and see how it performs with and without the windshield.
Now, DON'T EXPECT
$300 audio quality from this $60 microphone. Different microphones have different jobs.
So, before getting your own, research a bit online and find the correct one based on what you are actually doing.
So, that was the unboxing and review of the Rode VideoMicro. Please like, share and subscribe and I'll see you in the next video.

Local Catfishing Spot! (HCMC, Vietnam) - Duration: 8:46.good morning so another day in Vietnam
in and around Ho Chi Minh City some
early morning fishing always feeling
optimistic gonna go get my spot see
you guys in a second
as you guys can see right now no one
is here which is perfect because I love
fishing when no one's around so it's
early morning so I think around seven
o'clock
no traffic beat it so I'm gonna fish
water's high sunny
it's nice hot as usual but I'm feeling
good so right now I'm fishing on a
side part of the Saigon River so it's
around Ho Chi Minh City because this
river just all over the place so yeah
I'm gonna get ready I'll show you guys
what I'm using today this morning I
was leaving my apartment I caught a
cockroach
so I'll try this guy because the catfish
here they love the live bait
I have some carp mix that's super old I was
gonna go fishing the other day but I had
to do some work so it might not work
very well but I can use it to maybe
attract some fish but check it out so
that's great about fishing in Vietnam
they often have different types of bait
but look at these look at these night
crawlers I think this one is cut in half
to like small little snakes they're huge
absolutely huge and I got some crickets
usually the live bait works quite
well this is old moldy bread so I just
use things at my house it's gonna go bad
see if the fish like it but yeah I'm
gonna get things kind of put together
set up and we'll see what I have some
luck with
so I'm gonna use my extendable pole I
got this in Vietnam I've never seen this
United States I actually catch more fish
with this than anything else so I'm
gonna give a shot I put the cockroach on
it you can see it right here the
cockroach is still alive it's quite a
basic setup but sometimes it's tricky
getting it out because it gets stuck on
stuff and you have to have a really long
line but it works phenomenally because I
catch so much fish with it all right
you guys can see I have my extendable
Pole so this thing I actually really
like I've gotten probably more fish with
this than my two fishing poles here it's
quite a basic setup there's a weights
some extra line if the cockroach on that
I'm using right now so I'm gonna put it
out and then get my other stuff ready so
since you're using a really long line
that often gets stuck swing it out and
let it sit for me I usually put it
under a rock but the fishing pole is
fiberglass so you have to be really
careful because it often breaks and I
see I already caught a plastic bag so
there's often trash and there's a bag on
my line so I'm gonna have to bring it in
already just stick it out is it okay I'm
gonna get my other stuff situated
bear with me all right
got all my stuff out now it's time to
wait but I'll just show you guys around
a little bit so behind me is a small
stream that connects to the Saigon River
so the Saigon River I mentioned before
it wraps around the city so it's yeah
it's all over the place but you guys can
take a look so down there Saigon River
here the small stream canal whatever you
want to call this here so right now the
water is high when it's low this will
almost be completely empty so it will
lower maybe if meters I don't I do feet
but to three meters so six to maybe 10
feet so it's quite a bit right now it's
in the morning so hopefully I don't get
any rain but that's usually in the
afternoon the monsoons pick up so now
this wait hopefully catch some fish
I'm getting bites like crazy right now
so I think I got one on my long full nope fail nothing on
I'm using bigger hooks today if you use a
smaller hooks you catch a lot of baby
catfish and I don't really want to catch
any baby catfish okay good
second fish I think
Oh
I'm not used to filming and fishing
so this definitely had a bite but I'm
trying to get it set up so the thing is
it's I lost it it came off the hook so
it's the second fish I've gotten today
but it came off but I'm gonna get better
at this because I have to turn the
camera on and then I have to get your
fish which is hard it's actually really
hard but okay give it a second chance
but I'm gonna change a little bit with
the poles because some of them have more
line than the other so second fish super
excited I had the big giant night
crawler and a cricket on top of that so
I'm just looking at my other fishing
pole I don't know if I have a fish on I
don't know I'm gonna check it okay
got a bite got a bite maybe maybe yep it's on I got come on
don't come off got me one look at this
guy yeah so it's the third fish freaking
hard to fish in film but I'm stoked
look at him yeah
so not too big but let me grab it it's
coming down a little bit it's not as wet
look at this guy I'm stoked I'm
actually gonna take a quick picture so
I'm gonna throw them back afterwards
cuz I don't really eat them I just
catch them and release yeah take a
picture and they'll be back more fishing
all right took my picture I'm gonna
throw them back thank you
but with my setup here I know in Vietnam
I learn a bunch of different stuff you
can see I have kind of there's the
cricket and the worm on a big hook
there's a small little hook that's
attached to the bigger hook and I
actually caught out in the smaller hook
because I it works better that's yeah
that's the only reason all right I
need to get set up more just give me
another bite another bite another bite
thought I gotta bite I did get a bite
but no loss it this is what it is okay
all right been fishing for about three
hours gonna call it a wraps it's funny
because every time this happens in
Vietnam I got here been here for all two
hours alone so you can see this way
nobody and then when I come this way I
have a whole group of people who are
fishing in between my fishing poles so
but it's okay because I'm gonna be
leaving I caught my fish it's all
good
and yeah see what happens next time take
care

Today's video divided in 2 parts
In first part I'll tell you about Police Officers
Who work in nearest police station
And in second part I'll tell you
About police officers
Who are senior in rank
At ground there are CONSTABLES
They don't have star or
batch on uniform
But name batch is mandatory
Then above is HEAD CONSTABLE
On the sleeves of their uniform they bear
A red batch
Keep in mind. In some states or Union Territories
There is a position between constable & head constable
There is position of SENIOR CONSTABLE
Above Head constable there is
ASSISTANT SUB INSPECTOR
Having only 1 star on their uniform
Then above them is SUB INSPECTOR
Having 2 stars on their uniform
Then there is INSPECTOR having 3 stars on uniform
You've also watched many movies like
Singham, Dabangg, etc
In those movies actors have played the role of an
Inspector !!
In police station senior most is Inspector
If any junior officers behaves bad with you or
Deny to register your complaint
Then you can complaint about it to INSPECTOR
But what if, Inspector himself behaves bad with you?
Or deny to register your complaint ?
Now you can complaint to the senior officers about Inspector's bad conduct
Above Inspector there is
DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT OF POLICE also known as A.C.P
Above them are SUPERINTENDENT OF POLICE also known as
D.C.P
Then above them is DEPUTY INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE
Also known as ADDITIONAL COMMISSIONER
Above them is INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE
Also known as
JOINT COMMISSIONER
And above all there is
D.G.P
DIRECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE
Also known as COMMISSIONER OF POLICE
These police ranks have different abbreviations at different locations
Like D.G.P is known as COMMISSIONER in Delhi
For me in starting it was very confusing
But you'll not suffer like me
Because I prepared an E-BOOK
ULTIMATE GUIDE ON HOW TO IDENTIFY POLICE RANKS
Link of which is in description
It's a blueprint, hierarchy chart, table
By which you can
Easily identify & remember
Ranks of Indian Police Officers
It will be very easy & also you must know about it.
